After three years in Alabama, Jalen Hurts decided that he wanted out. Prior to the 2018 season, Hurts had led Alabama to a 26-2 record in two seasons and also nabbed himself an SEC Offensive Player of the Year honor.

During that same time span, he also won a national championship. But the emergence of Heisman runner-up Tua Tagovailoa became too much. On Friday, Hurts entered into the NCAA transfer portal.

Auburn & Houston Also Pursuing Hurts

Just a week removed from a stunning 44-16 National Championship loss to the Clemson Tigers, Hurts is already underway with visits. The sweepstakes for the senior quarterback first began with speculation that he’d jump ship for the University of Miami. On January 9, Hurts followed the school’s head coach Manny Diaz, tight end Brevin Jordan and running back DeeJay Dallas on Twitter.

Texas Christian University became the favorite soon after. The Horned Frogs lost their 2018 starter, Shawn Robinson, to Missouri and the school’s head coach Gary Patterson had recent success with transfer quarterback Kenny Hill.

However, odds now have the Maryland Terrapins as the No. 1 landing spot for Hurts.

Here are the odds:

Maryland: +200

Miami: +300

TCU: +500

Auburn: +600

Houston: +700

On Friday, Hurts was seen in College Park attending a Terrapins Basketball game. Though he hasn’t had a transfer quarterback like Patterson, new head coach Mike Locksley served as the Crimson Tide offensive coordinator in 2017 and 2018. Hurts still would have to battle against Kasim Hill and Tyrrell Pigrome for the starting role.

Though these new additions don’t rule out Miami — and while the Twitter activities are less of a sign — Miami made former Alabama quarterbacks coach Dan Enos their offensive coordinator. The Miami Herald reports that Hurts visited the school on Sunday and got food with coach Diaz and a large group of Miami staffers. In the two days before, the quarterback visited  Maryland and Oklahoma.

Though Oklahoma is not listed in the odds, Hurts could likely end up there. On top of the visit, both its starter and backup quarterback won’t be with the school in 2019. Kyler Murray is expected to go pro in either baseball or football and Austin Kendall entered into the transfer portal on Friday.

Jalen Hurts of Alabama entered into the NCAA transfer portal this week.

Jalen Hurts To Consider Transfer

Hurts, a junior, will be able to play immediately wherever he transfers to because he graduated in December. The quarterback will have one year of eligibility left.

Prior to this season, Hurts was a starting quarterback for an Alabama squad that went 26-2 and had two championship appearances. He was also just a year removed from an SEC Offensive Player of the Year award that he won as a freshman. Then, sophomore Tua Tagovailoa shined and Alabama became his team. Tagovailoa would finish the year second in the Heisman race.

Throughout these College Football Playoffs, Hurts didn’t speak on his future despite several inquiries about it. He even went as far as calling the speculation about it unfounded and claimed that he never mentioned transferring.

“I’ve been counted out,” Hurts said. “I was supposed to do this, I was supposed to do that. Even last year after the game, I was supposed to be gone. This year, I was supposed to redshirt and do all those things. But I’m here. I’m here for this team, and that’s what is most important to me.”

Hurts was used sparingly this season. Though he appeared in all but two games, which he missed because of injury, he was limited to a role as the change of pace quarterback. In his time on the field, he threw 51 passes for 765 yards, eight touchdowns and ran for two more scores. Though solid numbers, they were a far cry from his two seasons as a starter. In those campaigns, he threw for a combined 4,861 yards and 40 touchdowns. On the ground, he picked up another 1,809 yards and 21 touchdowns.

On Wednesday, Hurts followed University of Miami head coach Manny Diaz, tight end Brevin Jordan and running back DeeJay Dallas on Twitter. Some say the school could be a potential landing spot for the Crimson Tide quarterback.

Al Blades Jr., son of Miami Hurricanes legend Al Blades and U recruit from class of 2018, decided to reignite the famous Miami-FSU rivalry. There is little that needs to be be said about the two schools’ hatred for one another – enough of it was documented in both The U documentaries.

But the audacity to visit a college campus, go to the school’s 50-yard line and throw up the rival’s sign is quite surprising. However, University of Miami’s football program has a deeply loyal fanbase and it is hard to picture Al Blades Jr. going anywhere else. Still, no one could have expected him to do this.

This is why the U will always wonderfully play the bad guys. Let’s just hope the team, which has been riddled with NCAA infractions over the years, could return to form. They were 6-7 last season and have not won a bowl game since 2004 under Larry Coker.
