L.A. Rams Unveil New Uniforms

You can add the Los Angeles Rams to the list of teams who rebranded this offseason, as the team unveiled new uniforms for the 2020-2021 NFL season on Wednesday. The Rams become the seventh team this offseason to release new uniforms.

The Rams uniform release comes on the heels of the team unveiling a new logo and color scheme back in March. The franchise will also be debuting their brand new stadium, SoFi Stadium, next season.

The team’s new look will feature a blue jersey with yellow numbers and can be paired with either blue or yellow pants. The Rams will also wear an off-white colored uniform with corresponding pants. The helmet will be a metallic chrome blue with yellow horns on the side and a blue face mask.

The goal of the new uniforms, according to Rams COO Kevin Demoff is not only to have a modern look, but also still have some of the traditional elements of Rams uniforms in the past. “Our focus was always, this is going to be an amazing, iconic, modern building. You want the uniforms to match the style and design of the building,” Demoff said. “But still have the tradition and some elements that our fans have grown to know and love. I think that’s a balancing act for any team to go through this as you move forward.”

Rams players are excited for the new look as well. Rams receiver Robert Woods, who played for USC with their iconic uniforms, said that these are the coolest uniforms he has ever donned. “I already told my friends this is the coolest jersey I ever wore, I ever got to put on. It just feels like we’re a part of something new and exciting … We’re setting the trend, really.”

Rams offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth said, “I really enjoy the color combos, and I think our away uniforms are going to be some of the best in the league. I really think that bone color is going to be amazing, so I’m excited about it.”

With the release of these new uniforms, continuing on the rebrand the team has undergone ever since they moved back to Los Angeles in 2016, Demoff has said there are different combinations of their uniforms that they will unveil in the coming years.

Major League Baseball should be in the midst of its second month for the 2020 season, but that has since been put on hold because of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Whenever the MLB season begins, all 30 of the league’s teams will be wearing new uniforms, as Nike is now the official uniform provider for Major League Baseball, replacing long time partner Majestic.

With this change in a uniform partner, some teams will look to change their uniforms. The Boston Red Sox are among the teams looking to make a change as team president Sam Kennedy told The Athletic.

Longtime fans of baseball might not enjoy the changes to the uniforms of their favorite teams, whether it is the Red Sox or another franchise, but Kennedy has assured that if the franchise redesigns their uniform, it would be strictly for performance reasons. “(The changes will be) likely geared to get us to a uniform that is geared towards high performance,” he said. “We will always be respectful of our incredible traditional look and feel, but we are always open to new and different concepts as time goes by.”

Making uniforms more functional is nothing new in recent years. Compared to the uniforms of the past, uniforms today are significantly lighter and breathable for players, while also being more durable. Odds are that the new uniforms if changes are made, will not deviate much from the Red Sox’s iconic look, but there will still be critics, but let’s be clear, the goal is to make things better for the players on the field, not change the image of the Boston Red Sox, or any team for that matter.

England and Scotland FAs To Defy FIFA Poppy Uniform Ban

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against England and Scotland for wearing poppies during their 2018 Russia World Cup qualifier on Nov. 11.

FIFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings Against England And Scotland For Poppy Uniforms

Players from both national teams donned black armbands with a poppy during England’s 3-0 victory at Wembley Stadium, which took place on Armistice Day.

The world soccer governing body’s rules prohibit “political” statements on jerseys.

FIFA would not “speculate on any outcome or provide an estimated timeline”.

The idea for the poppy uniforms was first raised before the two countries met on Nov. 11, the day when the United Kingdom traditionally honors those who have died in battle.

According to the rule-making International Football Association Board (IFAB), which includes members of the four British football associations, players cannot wear “political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images”.

That rule was bent on Nov. 12, 2011, during a 1-0 England friendly win over Spain at Wembley, as players wore poppies on their armbands that day.

That same year, Scotland players wore poppies on armbands and on their tracksuits in a game against Cyprus.

Nevertheless, FIFA did not specify before Friday’s match whether either England or Scotland and would be punished for their poppy armbands.

MP Damian Collins – chair of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee – wrote to Fifa president Gianni Infantino asking the world governing body to reconsider its decision.

English Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn stated players from both sides would wear black armbands with poppies “as a point of principle.”

Glenn also added the FA would contest any form of punishment, claiming its legal case was “rock solid.”

Meanwhile, Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan stated before the match that it was also prepared to challenge any sanction FIFA imposed.

Oddly enough, FIFA stated it did not explicitly ban the display of poppies and that any such claim was “a distortion of the facts.”

Soccer’s rules are laid out by IFAB, and any infringement is deal with by FIFA’s disciplinary committee– which FFA says is an independent body.

Nevertheless, FIFA’s secretary general, Fatma Samoura, told BBC Sport last week: “We have to apply uniformly and across the 211 member associations the laws of the game. Britain is not the only country that has been suffering from the result of war.”

Fifa recently opened disciplinary proceedings over the Republic of Ireland’s use of a logo to commemorate the centenary of the Easter Rising.

A points deduction is the harshest sanction possible, although a fine is considered to be more likely.

The British FAs would then have an opportunity to challenge that fine via Fifa’s appeals process and a further chance to appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport – a course of action that would probably cost more than the fine.

England and Scotland FAs To Defy FIFA Poppy Uniform Ban

The Football Associations of England and Scotland say they will both defy a ban on players wearing poppies when the two teams face off at Wembley on Armistice Day (Nov. 11) for a 2018 World Cup qualifying match.

England, Scotland To Defy Poppy Ban On Uniforms Despite FIFA Sanction Threat

The FAs will allow players to wear black armbands with poppy emblems and are willing to accept any punishment.

FIFA general secretary Fatma Samba Diouf Samoura told BBC Sport “any kind of sanction” could follow.

World soccer’s governing body prohibits political, religious or commercial messages on uniforms.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has called the rule “outrageous.”

Back in 2011, England brokered a compromise with FIFA wherein players were allowed to wear poppies on black armbands rather than on their jerseys for a friendly game versus Spain. England hoped for a similar arrangement for the Friday, Nov. 11 matchup against Scotland.

The Scottish FA  also confirmed it “intends to pay appropriate tribute by having the Scotland national team wear black armbands bearing poppies”.

English FA chief executive Martin Glenn told BBC Sport that players from both sides would wear black armbands carrying the poppy symbol– traditionally used to remember those who died during World War One – “as a point of principle.”

Glenn added: “We are standing shoulder to shoulder with the other home nations on this, we all feel very strongly. It’s not a political symbol and I think most people would agree with us.”

A points deduction would be among the possible punishments FIFA could inflict on any team who defies the ban, although Glenn does not believe it will come to that.

The Football Association of Wales has also written to FIFA requesting permission to don poppies on armbands during their match against Serbia in Cardiff on Nov. 18, but has not yet committed to defying the ban.

Samoura has questioned why an exception should be made for England, Scotland and Wales.

“We have to apply uniformly and across the 211 member associations the laws of the game,” she said. “Britain is not the only country that has been suffering from the result of war. The only question is why are we doing exceptions for just one country and not the rest of the world?”

A petition begging FIFA not to uphold the ban has garnered more than 250,000 signatures.

Earlier on Wednesday, the issue was discussed in Parliament.

“Before they start telling us what to do, they jolly well ought to sort their own house out,” said Mrs May, citing the recent FIFA corruption claims which have seen dozens of former officials prosecuted or banned from the sport.

“Our football players want to recognize and respect those who have given their lives for our safety and security. It is absolutely right they should be able to do so.”

MLB & UnderArmour Reach Deal to Make Uniforms Starting 2020

Major League Baseball has reportedly reached an agreement with Under Armour to be the exclusive uniform provider beginning in the 2020 season, according to Terry Lefton of Sports Business Daily.

Under Armour To Replace Majestic As MLB On-Field Jersey Providers

Starting in 2020, MLB’s uniforms will no longer be manufactured by Majestic– as they have been since 2005.

The agreement would mark Under Armour’s first uniform deal with a major U.S. sports league.

Although the jerseys will be made for in-game use, Fanatics–he nation’s largest seller of online sports gear, which already runs the online MLB Shop — will have the rights to other apparel.

Here is Lefton’s report:

“In what would mark a significant shake up in MLB’s licensing business, Fanatics and Under Armour have quietly completed a deal that will see them team to produce UA-branded on-field jerseys starting with the ’20 season. The deal would mean the end of MLB’s longtime licensing relationship with both Nike and Majestic Athletic.”

Of course, some of the questions that remain concerning this new deal are: firstly, how much input will Under Armour have on future jersey designs? And secondly, how obtrusive will Under Armour’s logo be on the jerseys?

New Era will continue to provide hats for the league.

An official announcement is expected to come following the World Series.

Under Armour was a bidder to pick up the official NBA uniform rights deal, which begins next year and was ultimately won by Nike. Nike had rights to have its product on the under layer under the MLB jersey, although they will be out with the new deal, sources stated.

The sportswear giant also has a deal with the NFL, which provides that its workout gear will be worn by players at the NFL Combine every year.

For the third time in recent memory, the Arizona Diamondbacks are changing their aesthetic. After abandoning the Randy Johnson-era purple and teal color scheme, the club shifted to a more desert-based color palate of red, sand, and white. On Thursday, they revealed they would be keeping those colors, albeit with some modifications.

The most noticeable addition is several swatches of diamond pattern, meant to evoke snake skin. These will appear on the shoulders and sides of jerseys, the back of pant legs, and even around the top of the team’s caps.

The club will also be modifying their road uniform. While virtually every team in the league uses a pale gray top on the road, the D-backs are leaning towards the darker side of the spectrum. The new shade of gray will border on charcoal and be accented by red and black highlights. There will also be an alternate with home jersey with teal highlights and an alternate road uniform that remains dark gray, but swaps the red piping for teal.

And fear not fans of the classic purple look, the team will also be wearing that uniform for Throwback Thursday games.
