University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) Blazers running back Gregory Bryant was declared brain dead on Sunday, just one day after he was found shot in a car on Interstate 95 in South Florida.

West Palm Beach Police spokeswoman Lori Colombino said Bryant was declared brain dead at 1 p.m. Sunday. Her statement added that the investigation into the shooting of the 21-year-old UAB recruit is now classified as a homicide.

The shooting occurred before 5 a.m. Saturday and Bryant was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition. His step-grandfather had told CBS 12 that he heard someone followed Bryant from a club and drove up behind him on the interstate.

Detectives are seeking witnesses of the shooting, Colombino also said. A passenger in the car, 25-year-old Maurice Grover, was hospitalized with minor injuries. As of Saturday night, West Palm Beach Police said they had no other information.

Bryant began his career at Notre Dame and spent last season attending ASA College in North Miami Beach, Florida, (close to his hometown of Delray Beach) where he played in just one game. He was living out of a hotel room in Miami with friends. He was the biggest name in UAB’s first recruiting class since the school restarted its program.

Bryant left Notre Dame after just one season, since he was ruled academically ineligible for the 2015 season. Because UAB won’t play until the 2017 season, Bryant was allowed to enroll in January 2016, instead of possibly having to wait an extra year to be eligible elsewhere. He could become eligible to compete after spending an academic year at UAB. He announced his transfer to UAB in November.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly tweeted the following statement on Sunday evening:

“Coach Clark, he really did me a favor because I was living in hotels in Miami,” Bryant told The Associated Press before national signing day in February. “He said I could come in as soon as the semester was over. Any other school, I would have had to wait another semester and probably be enrolled by December. I just bought into what coach Clark was saying, and I got in with a 2.0 [GPA].”

“We are trying to find answers,” Bryant’s grandmother Annette Kelly told CBS. “Someone is going to have to give us answers because he was just getting ready to go back to college tomorrow. He just came home for the weekend to be with his grandmother and mother, and a coward killed my baby.”

After gaining a 21-point halftime lead, the BYU Cougars secured a 97-79 home victory over Conference USA regular-season champions the UAB Blazers in the NIT opening game at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah, on Wednesday night.

“I think we reminded each other that they were more tired than we were,” said BYU guard Kyle Collinsworth, who would go on to record his sixth triple-double of the season, 12th of his career. He finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists.

Collinsworth was right, as the Cougars continued to push the ball at every turn, while the Blazers eventually ran out of steam.

Chase Fischer added 27 points for the Cougars, and Nick Emery scored 22.

“We competed well, played together well and shared the ball well,” said BYU coach Dave Rose, after praising the crowd for giving the home team a lift when it needed it. “It was a good win.”

After the Cougars led 51-30 at halftime, UAB slowly began cutting down the lead in the second half. Robert Brown hit a jumper with 10:40 left to shrink BYU’s lead to 70-66. Brown scored a game-high 29 points, only two of which came in the second half. Chris Cokely added another 13 for UAB.

Brown ended his 7-0 run with a couple more free throws for UAB, but Fischer then countered with his own 11-2 run, to which Emery added a 3-pointer with 4:54 left to bring the Cougars’ lead back to 21.

“We competed well, played together well and shared the ball well,” said Rose, after praising the crowd for giving the home team a lift when it needed it. “It was a good win.”

BYU (24-10) will next host third-seed Virginia Tech in the second round of the NIT at the Marriott Center on Friday night.

Update: Another 14-3 upset has taken place with Georgia State defeating Baylor 57-56. And as a result, my bracket is dying a slow death.

It was looking like Notre Dame could have been the first casualty of March Madness, but they were able to squeak by Northeastern 69-65. But no one was expecting Iowa State to fall to UAB — if the latter school sounds familiar, they made headlines when their football program was shut down in 2014.

On paper Iowa State is a better team, but they could not match UAB’s aggressive nature: the Blazers secured 52 rebounds compared to Iowa State’s 37. UAB even dominated their offensive board with 19 rebounds — Iowa State only had 9 the whole game.

“Iowa State’s offense, all year long, has bailed them out of situations,” stated ESPN’s Eamonn Brennan. “In fact, coming into the tournament, Iowa State’s last five games they trailed by a combined 75 points and they went 5-0… It just didn’t happen [today]. UAB was great on the defensive end,” even keeping Cyclones’ Georges Niang to only eleven points.

Still, the odds of a 14-seed defeating a three-seed is very small, with the record, prior to 2015’s tourney, being 95-25, according to The Washington Post. But the article points out that though it did not happen in 2014, “a 13-4 upset happened every NCAA tournament from 2008 to 2013.”

Now, this upset certainly hurts everyone’s bracket, including President Obama’s: he had Iowa State making it to the Elite Eight and losing to Duke. In fact, that section of his bracket was scrutinized the most because he had Gonzaga losing in the round of 32 and Iowa State controlling it the rest of the way.

The final score was 60-59.
