Toronto FC's Jozy Altidore Breaks MLS Record in 5-2 Win vs Montreal Impact

Toronto FC defeated the Montreal Impact 5-2 (7-5 on aggregate) in extra time at home in Wednesday’s Eastern Conference Final to reach the 2016 MLS Cup Final, and Jozy Altidore set a new record in the MLS playoffs in the process.

Toronto’s Jozy Altidore Sets MLS Playoff Record

Altidore, a U.S. Men’s National Team member, became the first player to score in five consecutive playoff games.

Montreal defeated Toronto 3-2 in the first leg last week. Atlidore’s goal, a header off a corner kick in the 44th minute, put Toronto ahead on tiebreakers. His goal was particularly impressive because it came on a very tight angle.

TFC substitute Benoit Cheyrou scored moments after coming on for the injured Sebastian Giovinco during the extra session, and fellow sub Tosaint Ricketts put the game away two minutes later.

Toronto played a very strong game on Wednesday, and didn’t give up whenever things went south for them. Instead of being discouraged by Dominic Oduro’s opener, the Reds amped up their aggressive playing style. They also could have given up after Ignacio Piatti netted the Impact’s second goal, one that proved to be controversial– Oduro appeared to be offside on the play, and the ball slowly rolled into the goal.

Nevertheless, Toronto roared back to secure the win. A short corner give-and-go from Armando Cooper to Justin Morrow and back set up a Nick Hagglund header that again put Toronto ahead, and locked the aggregate score at 5 to force extra time.

TFC will next host the Seattle Sounders on Dec. 10 in the 2016 MLS Cup Final. It will mark the first appearance in the domestic final for each team: Toronto entered the league in 2007; Seattle followed in 2009. It will also mark the first time an MLS original franchise will not compete for MLS Cup.

MLS Recap: Red Bulls Beat Fire 1-0, Toronto FC and NYCFC Tie 1-1

After two straight losses, the New York Red Bulls secured a 1-0 home victory over the Chicago Fire on Wednesday.

Red Bulls End Two-Game Losing Streak With 1-0 Win

The Red Bulls dropped to 3-7-1 after last week’s road loss against D.C. United. However, midfielder Mike Grella helped his team get back on track by scoring his fourth goal of the season. Grella fired a shot past Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson 13 minutes into the second half. Lloyd Sam provided the assist on the goal after receiving a back-heel pass from Bradley Wright-Phillips. New York dominated possession for most of the game.

The win moved the Red Bulls level on 13 points with United and the New England Revolution in the Eastern Conference as the Fire (1-5-4) stayed at the bottom of the table.

Meanwhile, Toronto FC fought back to tie 1-1 against Eastern Conference leader New York City FC at BMO Field in Toronto. Following a 2-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Sunday, NYCFC rested its star players, including David Villa and Andrea Pirlo.

Even with those two as substitutes, the New York City FC was still able to take a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute thanks to a stunning goal from 24-year-old Ghanaian midfielder Kwadwo Poku from the edge of the penalty area.

Toronto answered three minutes before halftime with a goal from midfielder Will Johnson, who was on hand to side-foot the equalizer from close range.

The NYCFC leads the East by one point after a five-game winning streak, and is now 4-3-5. They will next face the Red Bulls at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. Toronto is now 4-4-3 and will next host Columbus Crew SC on Saturday.
