Tiger Woods posted his lowest-ever round at the Masters on Saturday after cutting by five strokes on Friday. At +1, there was still hope that Tiger could pull off another historical major win against all odds on the weekend, but a ten-over 82 put him at +11 and out of contention heading into the final round.

2022 Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler held a one-stroke lead heading into the final round and held on for his second career masters championship. After the round, defending masters champion Jon Rahm slipped Scheffler into the green jacket, just as Scheffler had done for Rahm when Rahm won in 2023.

Scheffler finished at -11, and Woods finished at +16, the lowest and highest scores that made it through the final round. Woods made a record-breaking 24th consecutive cut at the Masters after playing 23 holes on Friday because of a round suspension on Thursday due to darkness. Rahm finished in a tie for 45th position at +9 overall.

Woods told reporters that he was still suffering from the leg injuries he sustained from his car accident in 2021 and that Friday’s 23 holes had tired him out physically, not to mention his fused back that he has been swinging with ever since.

“I was not hitting it very good or putting well … Just hit the ball in all the places that I know I shouldn’t hit it. And I missed a lot of putts. Easy, makable putts,” he said.

Before the tournament began, the certainty of Scheffler winning was only theoretical. The Masters had brought some of the greatest comebacks and unlikely stories to the PGA, and for a world number one to win multiple majors is something only Woods had done in PGA history.

“I think his superpower is people that are super powerful are good at everything,” Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, said. “And he seems to be good at everything. He doesn’t really have a weakness.”

“I feel like I’m playing really good golf right now,” Scheffler said. “I feel like I’m as in control of my emotions as I’ve ever been, which is a good place to be. I feel like I’m maturing as a person on the golf course, which is a good place to be.”

Scheffler will want to be more mature once he becomes a father with his wife, Meredith Scheffler, who is due with their child any day now. Scheffler’s life will change dramatically, but that doesn’t mean he won’t stop competing in professional golf.

“Golf will probably now be fourth in line,” Scheffler said of his priorities. “But I still love competing, and I don’t plan on taking my eye off the ball anytime soon.”

On Thursday, the PGA’s Masters Tournament kicked off with surprises and highlights.

One of those highlights involved golfer Tommy Fleetwood, 30, who was struggling with a poor opening round. However, his luck changed quickly when he made a hole-in-one at the par-three 16th hole. The amazing shot sparked an uplifting mood change and provided some much-needed motivation for the golfer who had been struggling up to that point. There was nothing but smiles for Fleetwood once he realized that he had just nailed a hole-in-one.

Fleetwood’s ball sailed over the pond and avoided the bunkers and all other obstacles before bouncing into the hole.

Fleetwood made history with his hole-in-one as it became the 23rd ace in the tournament’s history. Furthermore, it marked the English golfer’s second consecutive tournament with a hole-in-one. Two weeks ago at the Match Play Championship, he also scored an ace.

Fleetwood spoke to the media about his amazing shot and making Masters history. “It’s really nice to have one at The Masters,” Fleetwood said. “I think that’s two in two consecutive weeks as well and I’m racking them up all of a sudden quickly, and I’ll try to keep it going.”

The golfer spoke about the feeling of scoring an ace in the major. “Yeah, it’s very special,” Fleetwood said. “Doing it at a major is great, doing it competitively is great, but at Augusta is probably just another edge.”

As per tradition, any golfer who makes a hole-in-one has to buy a drink for all the players. Not only that, but Fleetwood will receive the commemorative crystal vase handed out for the achievement at the Masters.

After shooting a 74 on Thursday, Fleetwood followed that up with a 70 on Friday to finish the first two days at exactly even par. He easily made the cut and will have a chance to compete for the elusive green jacket this weekend. Although he is currently seven strokes back of leader Justin Rose, stranger things have happened in golf. Maybe another hole-in-one on Saturday morning will help spark an unprecedented rally by Fleetwood. It will certainly make for interesting television this weekend.

Justin Rose surprised many when he finished on top of the standings on day one of the Master’s Tournament.

Rose, 40, did not expect himself to be leading the other golfers in the coveted 2021 Masters Tournament. “It’s incredible,” Rose said. “It’s a good reminder that you just never know what can happen out there.” It is more impressive for Rose, who is playing in his first tournament since a back injury forced him to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational last month.

Rose made seven birdies and an eagle during a 10-hole stretch on Thursday.

The English golfer finished with the round with a 65, seven under par. Heading into the second round, Rose had a four-shot lead over his fellow competitors. Monday’s performance marked the fourth time that Rose has either led or co-led the Masters after the first round. It is a record he now shares with legend Jack Nicklaus.

Defending champion Dustin Johnson struggled in the first round. For the first time since the 2018 opening round, Johnson failed to break par. Johnson three-putted for a double bogey on the 18th for a 74.

The average score from the other golfers in the competition was 74.5. Only 12 players broke par.

Furthermore, competitors were surprised by the weather conditions on the course. It had not rained at Augusta National in more than a week. Players could not recall the last time greens were this fast during the practice rounds.

“It’s my 10th year, but I’ve never seen the greens so firm and fast,” Hideki Matsuyama said. “So it was like a new course for me playing today, and I was fortunate to get it around well.”

“You can’t win the golf tournament today, even with a 65, you can’t win it today,” Rose said. “You can only probably lose it today, obviously. I reset just prior to that and thought if I can get myself back around even par, that would be a good day’s work.”

Despite ending the first round with a 4-stroke lead, Rose’s lead has evaporated to just one shot after the first nine holes on day two. Rose’s Friday got off to a poor start, as he bogied the first hole of the day. However, he quickly regained composure and birdied the second hole to get back to par on the day. Unfortunately for the Englishman, Rose produced bogies on three of four holes between the fourth and seventh hole on the front nine. He finished the front nine of the second round with a 39, three shots over par. Overall, he has dropped from seven under par to four under par.

At the time of this writing, Rose still holds a one-stroke lead over Bernd Wiesberger, Marc Leishman, Brian Harman and Matsuyama.

Jordan Spieth Says Masters Catastrophe Is Behind Him

Jordan Spieth made his way to the upcoming 2016 Masters at Augusta National with mixed emotions after missing out on a second victory of the year.

Jordan Spieth Misses Out On Second Victory Of Year At Shell Houston Open

Spieth, 22, began the final round of the Shell Houston Open in Humble, Texas, on Sunday five shots behind, but birdied five of his first seven holes to reduce his deficit to a single shot before fading badly on the back nine.

The World No. 2 played his last 10 holes in three over par, including a double bogey on the 18th, to earn a final score of 70 and end in a tie for 13th place, just seven shots behind champion Jim Herman.

“It’s tough,” Spieth told reporters. “I mean, I had it going there. With the conditions, two under was a very average score. So a very disappointing finish.”

Spieth then added, “Good news is I got myself in contention, I felt the nerves. I know what I need to work on under pressure now for next week, and everything is there. I just need to put it all together and limit the mistakes. Five over-par holes, that needs to be limited going into a major.”

Herman scored a crucial birdie on the 16th as he carded a final score of 68, just one shot ahead of Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, who also shot 68 and missed from 15 feet for a birdie on the last.

American Dustin Johnson came in third after closing with 69, while Spaniard Rafael Cabrera-Bello finished fourth after closing with 65.

Spieth is headed to his Masters title defense in Augusta, Georgia later this week.

21-year-old Jordan Spieth put the golf world on notice with his opening round score of 64 on Thursday at Augusta. He ended up doing much more than that. Spieth finished the weekend at -18 to easily take a wire-to-wire victory at the 2015 Masters tournament, tying Tiger Woods‘ record for the lowest tournament score at a Masters.

The Texas native shot two rounds of 70 over the weekend to pad his lead and comfortably take the green jacket by 4 shots over Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose. Although he bogied on the 18th hole on Sunday, Spieth will still go down in history for having the lowest round in Masters history alongside Woods, who shot -18 in 1997. He’s also become the second youngest golfer to win the Masters, with Tiger’s 1997 performance again setting that mark. Spieth’s performance was also the first wire-to-wire victory at a Masters since Raymond Floyd did so in 1976.

Spieth’s performance shattered records, but many other golfers impressed over the weekend. Phil Mickelson, who had been struggling in the past year, had a great weekend, shooting 67 and 69 in the final two rounds to mount a charge to a 2nd place finish. Mickelson told reporters that he’s mainly focusing on the bigger tournaments, so it might not be a surprise to see him contend for some more majors in the future.

Tiger also looked to be in much better form than he had been in the past year. Although a rough round of 73 on Sunday dropped him down to a 17th place finish, Woods showed some very good signs of improvement and could be heading in the right direction.

World number one Rory McIlroy didn’t get the green jacket that was missing from his majors collection, but he still looked impressive after this weekend. Rory shot a 68 and a 66 in the final two rounds to finish 4th in the only major he has yet to win in his young career. After winning two majors last year, McIlroy could be poised to win another one in the summer months ahead. And with a good showing at the Masters, Rory showed he could compete at Augusta and be in the hunt for completing his career grand slam in the future.

But the main story of the weekend is Spieth. Spieth was already ranked fourth in the world heading into the weekend and was quickly climbing his way up. The Masters is already his 3rd win in the PGA Tour’s 2015 season, which also includes a runner-up finish after a playoff in Houston. His win at Augusta sets him to new heights and puts him on track to become one of the world’s best.

With American golf needing a fresh face after Tiger’s injuries and Mickelson’s struggles, Spieth might just be the new face for the sport in the United States. And with the way Spieth and McIlroy are playing, we might soon have a battle for golf dominance between the two. That in itself might be the biggest victory of the weekend, as the sport of golf now has a new storyline that fans can enjoy for a long time to come.
