Serena Williams Reaches Australian Open Final vs Venus

In her first match in about a year, Serena Williams suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of #115 ranked Harmony Tan. In the first round of Wimbledon on Tuesday. The match featured a 10-point third-set tiebreak to end the stalemate.

Williams took the court for the first time since Wimbledon 2021 when a torn hamstring forced her to retire in a first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. This was her 21st time playing at Wimbledon, a competition where she had made the final 11 times and won seven. Williams got off to a slow start, losing the first set 7-5, taking the second set 6-1, and reaching a ten-point tie break on the third and final set. After the match, Williams told reporters she gave all she could in the loss. “Today I gave all I could do, you know, today,” she said. “Maybe tomorrow I could have gave more. Maybe a week ago I could have gave more. But today was what I could do. At some point, you have to be able to be ok with that. And that’s all I can do. I can’t change time or anything, so, that’s all I could do on this particular day.”

This was Tan’s main draw debut at Wimbledon, and she stunned one of the best tennis players in history. “It’s a dream because, you know, I saw Serena on the TV when I was young. My coach, Nathalie Tauziat, played her 20 years ago,” Tan said. “She’s a legend. I mean, she won 23 Grand Slams. When you play her, I was scared. I mean, I was scared when I was on the court but really happy to be there.”

Tan however drew controversy after withdrawing from her double match with a thigh injury. Her partner Tamara Korpatsch wrote on social media that she was disappointed due to her late drop. “She just texted me this morning,” she said. “Let me wait here [one] hour before the match start. I’m very sad, disappointed and also very angry that I can’t play my 1st Doubles Grand Slam. It’s really not fair for me.”

As for Williams, many are speculating that she may be headed towards the end of her career. The 40-year-old has won 23 Grand Slams, the most of any player in the Open Era, but is still chasing Margaret Court’s record of 24. Since returning from childbirth in 2018, Williams has played in 14 majors, reaching the finals four of those times, and falling short in each one.

The next major, the U.S. Open, is slated for later this summer and Williams has not ruled out the idea of playing. “When you’re at home, especially in New York, and the U.S. Open, that being the first place I’ve won a Grand Slam, is something that’s always super special,” she said. “There’s definitely, you know, lots of motivation to get better and to play at home.”

Novak Djokovic Loses to Juan Martin del Potro at Rio2016 Olympics

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic and his wife, Jelena Djokovic, got some good news Thursday as both announced that they have tested negative for COVID-19. Djokovic contracted the virus 10 days ago while playing an exhibition tennis organized by himself in Croatia and Serbia.

No social distancing guidelines were followed during the matches that Djokovic organized even with players coming from all over the world to play. It also seemed Djokovic wasn’t interested in taking precautions off the court either, as videos surfaced of he and other tennis stars partying at a Serbian nightclub. One of Djokovic’s companions at the club, Grigor Dimitrov, tested positive for COVID-19 just days after the videos were released.

Djokovic organized the tournament when virus cases had been reduced in Europe, which lead him to believe that it was safe to play. “Unfortunately, this virus is still present, and it is a new reality that we are still learning to cope and live with,” said Djokovic.

Since Djokovic and his wife tested positive, they went into self-isolation in Croatia while showing no symptoms. His coach, Goran Ivanisevic, previously had COVID-19 as well.

The next big tennis tournament is the US Open in New York, which has put in major precautions including frequent testing, no fans and limiting the number of people allowed in the club.

Before his positive test, Djokovic spoke out on these measures.

“We could bring one person to the club, which is really impossible,” he said. “I mean, you need your coach then a fitness trainer, then a physiotherapist.”

The timeless 37-year-olds in Roger Federer and Serena Williams prove to defy time for yet another year. Both players have been cruising through the early rounds of the Wimbledon, as Federer beat Matteo Berrenttini, the 17th seed in the round of 16, while Williams beat 30th seed Carla Suarez Navarro to advance to the quarterfinals in the tournament.

After a few of her matches, Williams expressed to the media how fond she is of her fellow 37-year-old.

“Honestly, what strikes me most is just how he just keeps producing it day after day, time after time,” Williams said, according to Express. “I mean, any match, he’ll just pull out some magic. I’m just really amazed at his hands, how fast they are, how athletic he is, but how graceful. It’s like a ballerina with all that power. It’s so effortless. It’s amazing. It’s amazing to watch.”

The Swiss international has proven time and time again that age isn’t slowing him down, as he’s seeking his ninth Wimbledon title. After advancing to the quarterfinals, Federer is set to face Kei Nishikori, who is known for making deep runs in tournaments. Nishikori has a maximum amount of endurance that could trouble Federer if he’s not firing on all cylinders. If Federer advances, he could see rival Rafa Nadal in the semifinals of the Wimbledon, then possibly Novak Djokovic in the finals. These two players are the only consistent competitors who can meet Federer toe-to-toe.

Meanwhile, Williams is set to face Alison Riske, a 29-year-old American, on Tuesday. Williams is currently ranked 89th, but has eliminated a 13th seed and top-seed Ashley Barty on her way to the quarterfinals. If Williams advances, she will most likely face Simona Halep, the Romanian international who beat Williams in the Australian Open earlier this year. Williams is seeking her first Wimbledon trophy since 2016, which will match the record for most single trophies with 24.
