Carsen Edwards, who’d scored 15 of his 29 points in the first half and became the Purdue Boilermakers’ all-time leading scorer in NCAA tournament games, heaved up a three. At first glance, he looked out of bounds. But with 1.7 seconds left, the refs sent him to the line with three shots. He missed the first but nailed the other two. Tennessee missed a last-second heave and the game went into overtime.

While at one point it looked like the Boilermakers’ sweet 16 heartbreak was sure to continue, things took a turn at the KFC Yum! Center on Thursday night. They dominated in overtime and rode the ability of veteran leadership to their first elite eight appearance since 2000.

No. 3 seed Purdue wound up holding off the no. 2 seed Volunteers 99-94.

Ryan Cline scored 22 of his 27 points in the second half, despite foul trouble he hit clutch shot after clutch shot. As the Boilermakers were either tied or trailing in the last four minutes, he hit three three-pointers. He made his last eight shots before fouling out.

“Our guys hung in there,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “It was one of those games where, you know, getting key stops was important and I know it was a high scoring game. But it was tough to get them and I thought at the very end, especially in overtime, we got key loose balls, long rebounds and ended up being the difference in the game.”

Purdue will face no. 1 seed Virginia on Saturday. If they can win, they’ll reach the final four for the first time since 1980.

Tennessee names Alabama DC Jeremy Pruitt as new head football coach

The Tennessee Volunteers football team has just finalized a deal to hire Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt as head coach.

Tennessee Football head coach news

Pruitt, 43, is in his second season as the Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator under Nick Saban. Alabama are ranked first nationally in scoring defense this season and second nationally in total defense. As an assistant coach, Pruitt has been a part of four national championship teams.

Phillip Fulmer, Tennessee’s former College Football Hall of Fame coach, replaced John Currie on Friday as the Vols’ athletic director.

Pruitt, a two-time Broyles Award finalist as the top assistant coach in college football, is also known as one of the top recruiters in the SEC. A former defensive back at Alabama, he had two different coaching stints in Tuscaloosa. He first worked there from 2007 to 2012, and then returned in 2016. In between, Pruitt was the defensive coordinator at Florida State on the Seminoles’ 2013 national championship team, and then served as Georgia’s defensive coordinator under Mark Richt for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Washington Redskins linebacker Ryan Anderson, who was recruited to Alabama by Pruitt, said one of Pruitt’s qualities is the way he connects with his players.

“He can relate to anybody, and you see that with the way guys have bought into new roles, and guys have been able to move around and play different spots,” Anderson said last year. “But the big thing he does is that he lets his dogs go hunt. There ain’t no holding back.”

Alabama linebacker Mack Wilson also praised Pruitt on Twitter Thursday morning, calling him “the best coach I’ve ever played for.”

Pruitt would become the fifth different Volunteers head coach in the past 11 years. He would replace Butch Jones, who was fired after going 34-27 overall and 14-24 in SEC play in five seasons in Knoxville.

Tennessee finished the season 4-8 and winless in eight SEC games to finish last (seventh) in the conference. They lost their final three games to Missouri, LSU and Vanderbilt.

Let this video of Butch Jones awarding tight end Alex Ellis a scholarship take you into the holiday week. In a new tradition — at least new to the public — coaches have been creating elaborate ways to give scholarship letters to walk on athletes. To those who do not know, walk-on athletes join the football team, but still have to pay for everything: books, food, tuition and more. And every year, coaching staffs award a few scholarships to the most deserving walk-ons.

It is great to see Coach Jones use the holidays as a means to give the information: forcing Ellis to unwrap a gift in front of the whole team. It is obviously a very emotional event for the tight end, with his hard work over the years finally paying off: and it is nice to see this multi-million dollar sports programs rewarding and acknowledging the hard work.
