Switzerland defeated the defending World Cup champions, France, in the 2020 Euros via penalty kicks on Monday.

Switzerland opened the scoring with a Haris Seferovic header and carried this 1-0 lead through halftime. A Swiss penalty kick was turned away by French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, and Karim Benzema furthered this momentum in the form of a goal to level the score at 1-1. Another goal quickly thereafter from Benzema pushed France to a 2-1 lead. Paul Pogba then struck a beautiful ball past the Swiss goalkeeper to double France’s lead and it seemed that the sluggish French start had been shrugged off.

Haris Seferovic, though, headed in his second goal of the game in the 80th minute, and another quick tally from Mario Gavranovic knotted the score at 3 apiece.

Kylian Mbappé had an extraordinary chance in extra time to send France to victory, but his in-tight shot was hammered into the side netting rather than the back of the goal. This miss, alongside no Switzerland conversions, sent the game to penalty kicks for a final decision.

Mbappé had a chance to redeem himself at the spot, but his shot was deflected away by Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer, clinching the upset victory for Switzerland.

“It’s hugely disappointing. We completely messed up our first half. We reacted in the second half but then left them space and they came back,” noted France defender Raphael Varane.

With the win, Switzerland faces perennial powerhouse Spain in the quarterfinals, who won in extra time against Croatia by a score of 5-3.

FIFA Youth Transfer Rules Challenged In Swiss Court

Zurich-based law firm Nater Dallafior Rechtsanwaelte stated it filed the case for a 17-year-old player from Africa. It declined to identify him or any European club supporting the case.

The case was filed Wednesday in Zurich’s cantonal (state) commercial court.

Soccer’s world governing body said it had not been notified by Thursday afternoon.

The case purports FIFA rules discriminate against youths from outside the 28-member European Union.

FIFA rules limit under-18s being transferred internationally to specific circumstances, such as a player’s family moving for non-soccer-related reasons. There are also some exemptions for 16- and 17-year-olds to comply with European labor laws.

Since 2014, FIFA has imposed transfer bans on Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid over youth signings.

FIFA is also currently mired in a dispute with several European national teams over their players’ displaying of poppies on their uniforms or in other ways during recent 2018 World Cup qualifying games on or near Armistice Day (Nov. 11), a day in which fallen servicemen in Europe are traditionally honored with poppies. FIFA rules strictly prohibit public display of any sort of political or religious symbols.

The U.S. women dominated in the first set, but the Swiss duo rallied back in the second. The teams tied at 4-4. Switzerland gained a 5-4 lead following a successful block against Ross. The U.S. duo then regained the lead after a successful block by Ross. Forrer/Verge-Depre took a single-point lead going 11-10 into the first technical timeout of the second set. However, the Swiss women ultimately came away with the second set, winning 24-22, thus forcing a decisive third set.

The second set marked Walsh Jennings’ second lost set of her Olympic career.

Forrer and Verge Depre led into the third set, but the Americans countered to tie at 4-4. A long serve from Ross gave the Swiss a one-point lead and a cut-shot that Ross was unable to save brought the score to 6-4 in Switzerland’s favor. A successful block from Walsh Jennings knotted the score again at 6-6. The U.S. took the lead at 8-7. Following a hard line shot from the Swiss, and then an ace,Forrer/Verge-Depre took the lead at 9-8. After a medical timeout, the U.S. duo rebounded, tying the game at 10-10 before pulling ahead for good to win the match.

Walsh Jennings, 37, is going for her fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal. She won three gold medals with Misty May-Treanor, sweeping Athens and Beijing before losing a single set in London. Ross, 34, won silver at the London 12 Games.

The U.S. women will automatically advance to the Round of 16, while the Swiss women will have to wait for the end of pool play to find out if they qualify for a final-chance lucky loser match.

Walsh Jennings/Ross went 3-0 in group play, beating out Australia, China and Switzerland. The elimination round will begin Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. ET. The US women’s next opponent is yet to be determined.
