The U.S. Open is entering its second week, with the lat set of first-round matches scheduled for Tuesday.

U.S. Open Day 8 Preview

Rafael Nadal, who won this year’s French Open, is the defending champion. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic took the other two Grand Slam tournaments this year: the Australian Open (in January) and Wimbledon, respectively.

This year’s U.S. Open will mark the final Grand Slam to count 32 seeds. Starting in 2019, the tournament will have just 16 seeds. Top-seeded Nadal and second-seeded Federer, who is now 37, are both considered favorites to win at Arthur Ashe this year. Djokovic is the sixth seed.

Nadal and Djokovic are also coming off recent title victories at the Rogers Cup in Toronto and the Cincinnati Masters, respectively. Djokovic defeated Federer in straight sets in the final at Cincinnati. Among the other players who could advance to the late stages in this year’s U.S. Open are Andy Murray and 2016 champion Stan Wawrinka.  

Federer will next play 22-year-old Japanese competitor Yoshihito Nishioka on Tuesday at 7 p.m. EST, while Nadal will face Canadian Vasek Pospisil in the second round on Wednesday. Djokovic will play Hungarian Márton Fucsovics on Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. EST, while Murray will play No. 31-seed Spaniard Fernando Verdasco on Wednesday. Wawrinka will also play on Wednesday against 20-year-old Frenchman Ugo Humbert. 

On the women’s side, American youngster Sloane Stephens is the defending champion. This year, she is the third seed and will next face Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina in the second round on Wednesday after beating Russian Evgeniya Rodina 6-1, 7-5 on Monday. No. 17-seed Serena Williams crushed Polish 26-year-old Magda Linette 6-4, 6-0 on Monday and will next face 23-year-old German Carina Witthöft on Wednesday.

The women’s top seed this year, Romanian 26-year-old Simona Halep, crashed out of the U.S. Open on Monday after losing 2-6, 4-6 to unseeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi. 

All main-court games will air on ESPN and ESPN2, although some matches will air on ESPN+, the network’s new subscription-based streaming service.

On Wednesay, Marin Cilic was knocked out of Wimbledon 2018 after losing to Argentine Guido Pella in the second round.

Marin Cilic eliminated from Wimbledon

The No. 3 seed Croatian lost 3-6 1-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 to Pella, the unseeded World No. 82. Rain had caused play to momentarily stop at the All England Club on Wednesday night.

Pella had never won a match at Wimbledon the last two times he qualified for the tournament. He will next face American World No. 103 Mackenzie Mcdonald in the third round on Friday.

Meanwhile, No. 5 seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina defeated Spain’s Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour and 30 minutes. Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, for his part, received a warning for cursing during his straight-sets victory over Robin Haase of the Netherlands. Kyrgios has long behaved controversially during games in major tournaments.

Second-seed Rafael Nadal, the World No. 1, also reached the third round with a 6-4 6-3 6-4 victory over Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin on Thursday, despite having committed two time violations during the match. First, the Spaniard drew a penalty for taking excessive time to change his attire. Then, Nadal was punished again for “overshooting the warmup,” according to BBC Sport. Kukushkin committed 34 unforced errors against Nadal.

“I don’t see a watch here. I don’t see that countdown,” Nadal told BBC. “It’s more difficult for me to understand what’s going on. In Australia and Roland Garros, we have the watch here that we can manage to be under control.”

The two-time Wimbledon champion will next play Australian teenager Alex de Minaur in round 3.

On the women’s side, Serena Williams will next face 25-year-old Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic in a third-round match on Friday.

Mexico crashed out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Monday after a 2-0 second-round loss to Brazil in Samara, Russia.

Brazil Beats Mexico In World Cup 2018

Neymar and Roberto Firmino scored for five-time World Cup champions Brazil in the second half to propel the team into the quarter-finals. Mexico has now been knocked out of seven straight World Cups in the round of 16, after four total games played.

Mexico’s coach, Colombian Juan Carlos Osorio,  heavily criticized Neymar without naming him — specifically accusing the superstar of “acting” or faking the severity of his injuries —, as well as the referees for what he perceived to be unfair calls that favored Brazil.

After beating defending World Cup winners Germany 1-0 in their opening game, Mexico had drawn the admiration of many fans. El Tri then defeated South Korea 2-1 in its second game, and despite losing to Sweden 3-0 in their final group-stage contest, advanced to the second round after the asian nation eliminated Germany with their own shocking 2-0 triumph.

Brazil will now face Belgium in the quarterfinals on Friday at 2pm EST. Belgium advanced by eliminating Japan with a 3-2 comeback win after trailing 2-0 early in the second half.

Mexico had some strong scoring chances in the first half, starting in the ninth minute. On a corner kick, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez crashed into Brazil’s goalie Alisson Becker in an attempt to head in the ball. However, Brazil also threatened with several shots in the first half, and Mexico’s goalie Guillermo Ochoa was there to make multiple key stops, including one from Gabriel Jesus in the 33rd. Ochoa also denied Philippe Coutinho, Paulinho and other Brazilian attackers’ strikes in the second half.

Neymar put Brazil up 1-0 in the 51st minute, after he carried the ball across the top of the box and then back-passed it to Willian, who tapped it near the left side of the goal and Neymar re-connected to shoot from close range into a nearly wide-open goal, as Ochoa had been jockeying to make a save near one post.

Carlos Vela had an opportunity for Mexico in the 61st, but Becker bumped it over the crossbar. In the 71st minute, Neymar was writhing on the ground after a tackle, and it appeared that Mexico’s Miguel Layun stepped on the Brazilian star’s foot while walking over to pick up the ball, and Neymar subsequently seemed to be in even greater pain.

The referee eventually gave Layun a yellow card after he took down Neymar again six minutes later.

Firmino doubled Brazil’s lead in the 88th minute with a goal similar to the first. After racing down the left side, he delivered a short cross that Firmino met to tap in from a few yards out after also running to meet the ball. Just moments before that goal, Osorio was seen furiously arguing with officials on the sideline about a previous call.

Belgium beat Japan 3-2 later on Monday thanks to a late goal from Nacer Chadli. Japan had been leading 2-0 after scoring two goals early in the second half. In the 48th minute, Belgium’s Jan Vertonghen, a Tottenham Hotspur defender, failed to intercept a pass that he could have stopped, and Genki Haraguchi raced forward to put the Asians up 1-0. Four minutes later, Japan doubled their lead after Takashi Inui fired a stellar strike from just outside the box. Vertonghen redeemed himself from his mistake to score Belgium’s first goal with a brilliant, powerful header from a difficult left-side angle in the 69th minute. Marouane Fellaini tied it five minutes later, and Chadli netted the game-winner in the 94th, using Romelu Lukaku as a dummy.

The last two round of 16 games will be played on Tuesday. Sweden and Switzerland will face off first, and the winner of that game will play the winner of England vs. Colombia in the quarterfinals.

Roger Federer struggled in the first two rounds of the U.S. Open, and on Thursday his battles continued as he fought his way back from a set down to beat Russian veteran Mikhail Youzhny 6-1 6-7 (3-7) 4-6 6-4 6-2 and reach the third round at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 36-year-old third-seeded Swiss — who has 19 Grand Slam titles and won five straight U.S. Opens from 2004 to 2008 — extended his record against Mikhail Youzhny to 17-0. Federer made a surprisingly high 68 unforced errors against the Russian.

Federer’s backhand seemed weak like it did in the opening rounds, and there was still the possibility of a back injury — which forced him to withdraw early from the Cincinnati Open — flaring up again.

However, the Swiss did not seem concerned that this would affect his performance in the rest of the tournament in Flushing, Queens.

“I’m pretty confident that I’m only going to get better from here,” said Federer. “That’s a good thing,”

“Because I’ve played a lot, I definitely found some rhythm now.”

He’s undefeated in 2017 when matches go into a fifth set, having won five from five epics this season.

Youzhny — a former top-ten player who reached the U.S. Open semi-finals in 2006 and 2010 — suffered a leg cramp during his loss.

Federer will next face No. 31 seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain on Saturday at 11 am EST. The Swiss is 12-0 against 35-year-old Lopez in his career. The Spaniard reached the third round with a four-set victory over countryman Fernando Verdasco. 

Top-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal will next face 30-year-old Argentine Leonardo Mayor on Saturday at 11 am EST after defeating Japan’s Taro Daniel 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

On the women’s side, No. 8 Svetlana Kuznetsova joined the list of the top seeds making an early exit, alongside No. 2 Simona Halep, No. 5 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 6 Angelique Kerber and No. 7 Johanna Konta. Kuznetsova fell to Japan’s Kurumi Nara 3-6, 6-3, 3-6.

One of the best players of the day was Shelby Rogers. The 24-year-old American beat Russian-born Australian No. 25 Daria Gavrilova 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 in an exhausting 3 hours and 31 minutes.

Rogers will next play fourth-seeded Ukrainian youngster Elina Sviotlina in the third round on Saturday at 11 am EST.

The round of 64 at Wimbledon on Thursday featured both expected results and shocking upsets: Roger Federer easily defeated Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic 7-6 (7-0), 6-3, 6-2, while Czech favorite Karolina Pliksova surprisingly fell to Magdaléna Rybáriková in three sets.

Federer — the No. 3 seed — dropped his first service game on Center Court but then recovered to defeat 27-year-old Lajovic, the World number 79.

With the victory, the 35-year-old Swiss pushed his win streak at the All England Club to 86. Federer is now closer to becoming the first man to capture eight Wimbledon singles titles. He first won the singles tournament in 2003.

“I was feeling nerves for some reason. Not sure why,” said Federer, who will face 27th-ranked German Mischa Zverev in the third round on Saturday morning. “It was definitely more acute than I normally feel it. It was just like all of a sudden I was walking up to the locker room after my warm-up and I was feeling excited and nervous.”

“Then when I walked to the court it was still ongoing and after the warm-up it was still there. And down 1-0, 0-40, it was still there, and it was still there at 6-6 in the first set.”

“Just took a while to shake it off.”

The Swiss last won the tournament in London in 2012. In the third set on Thursday, he recorded his ninth ace to seal the victory.

Meanwhile, third-seeded Pliskova of Czech Republic stunned fans by losing to Rybarikova, the World number 87 from Slovakia, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Pliskova, 25, has now been eliminated from the second round of Wimbledon for the fifth straight year.

Rybarikova entered Thursday having won 14 of her 15 matches on grass this summer. The 28-year-old star — the No. 2 Slovakian behind Dominika Cibulkova — beat Pliskova in two hours and 17 minutes after forcing her way back from a set and a break down. She will next face World number 35 Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine on Saturday morning.

The right-hander’s performance on Thursday is particularly impressive because just four months ago, Rybarikova was ranked 453rd in the world after having been forced off the tour for six months due to surgeries to her right knee and left hand.

After her loss, Pliskova admitted that leading by one set and a break does not necessarily mean one has control of a match, although she strangely added that she felt she was “close to winning.”

I played one bad game overall in second set, and otherwise I don’t think I did something wrong,” said the Czech. Asked about the fact that she could still become the world’s top-ranked female player unless Simona Halep reaches the semi-final or Angelique Kerber advances to the final, she was optimistic.

“For me the tournament is over. I’m not going to pray for someone losing or winning. I’m just going to take off and wait,” Pliskova added. “I have a lot of time to prepare till my next tournament in Toronto. I will make sure I prepare well, but for me now it’s vacation time.”

Otherwise on Thursday, three-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic — the World No. 2 — beat Czech 22-year-old Adam Pavlasek 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 to secure a third-round match on Saturday morning against Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis, who beat 29th-seeded Argentine and former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro in the previous round.

Kyle Edmund failed to become part on an elite group of four other British stars to reach the third round of the tournament after he lost to 15th-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils 7-6(7-1), 6-4, 6-4.

Women’s No. 1 Angelique Kerber defeated 2013 semi-finalist Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 7-5, 7-5 and will next face American Shelby Rogers on Saturday morning. Rogers beat 32nd-seeded Czech Lucie Safarova 6-7(7-4), 6-4, 6-3.

On Friday, Halep, Caroline Garcia and Victoria Azarenka all advanced, while 10th-seeded Venus Williams is set to face off against Japanese 19-year-old Naomi Osaka. 

On the men’s side, the third round on Friday saw 26th-seeded American Steve Johnson win, while Andy Murray will face 28th-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini and 24th-ranked American Sam Querrey will face 12th-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Andy Murray and Johanna Konta reached the third round of Wimbledon on Wednesday to become part of an elite group of four British players who are the first to advance to that round of the tournament in 20 years.

Heather Watson and Aljaz Bedene also advanced to round 3

Murray — the world’s top-ranked tennis star — defeated world number 97 Dustin Brown of Germany 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.

Before that, Australian-born Konta — the tournament’s sixth seed who is the world number seven — edged past Croatia’s Donna Vekic 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 10-8 in three hours and 10 minutes of fascinating play in the grass-court event.

Konta had won only one match in the Wimbledon women’s draw before this year, but is now a strong contender to become the first British female winner of the tournament since Virginia Wade in 1977. The 26-year-old beat 23rd-ranked Taiwanese star Hsieh Su-wei in the first round in London after the 31-year-old eliminated her from the French Open last month.

“I’m here with the intention of being part of the event for the full two weeks, but as you have just seen every player gives it their all, there’s no easy match,” Konta told BBC Sport.

The other two Brits to win in the Round of 64 on Wednesday were Heather Watson — who saw off Latvian 18th seed Anastasija Sevastova 6-0 6-4 — and Aljaz Bedene, who defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The last time at least four Britons reached the third round at Wimbledon was 1997, when Tim Henman, Mark Petchey, Greg Rusedski, Andrew Richardson and Karen Cross all advanced to that stage.

Kyle Edmund could become the fifth Brit to reach round 3 this year if he beats 15th-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils on Thursday.

Watson and Konta also mark the first pair of British women to appear in the same third-round draw since Jo Durie and Anne Hobbes in 1986.

Also advancing to the next stage on Wednesday was fourth-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who beat American Donald Young 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.

Murray, who had been suffering from a sore hip, sped through 11 of his 13 games to beat 32-year-old Brown in one hour and 36 minutes without facing a break point and recording only five unforced errors.

“My hip is OK,” Murray told BBC Sport.  “I have moved well in the first couple of matches, it hasn’t affected me. I have been getting good practices in and it feels good. Hopefully it stays that way.”

“It’s been a good start, hopefully I can keep it going.”

Murray next faces 28th-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini in round 3 on Friday. Konta will play Greek qualifier Maria Sakkari — who will be 22 later this month — in the third round on Friday.

Nadal will face 30th-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov in round 3 on Friday.

Venus Williams — the 10th seed — also advanced by beating China’s Qiang Wang 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 after coming back from a set down. Williams next plays 19-year-old Japanese star Naomi Osaka in the third round Friday morning.

Finally, 27-year-old American Madison Brengle beat Russian 11th seed Petra Kvitova 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 to set up a third-round match against 21st-seeded Caroline Garcia of France.

Nick Kyrgios made quite the unforgettable exit from the Australian Open on Wednesday, and not for losing with dignity.

Nick Kyrgios Has Meltdown, Crashes Out Of Australian Open After Loss To Andreas Seppi

The 21-year-old Australian squandered a two-set lead to fall 1-6, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 6-1, 10-8 to Italian Andreas Seppi after engaging in a heated verbal skirmish with his courtside box.

Kyrgios– who was still recovering from a knee injury heading into the season’s first Grand Slam– seemed irked about having to put in more extra effort.

The 14th seed had been dominating the match before he suffered a meltdown midway through the contest. One announcer called Kyrgios’ performance “melancholy madness.”

Kyrigos was just two games from securing a spot in the third round at 4-4 in the third set when, after repeatedly arguing with his entourage, he began to fall apart.

The Australian was docked a penalty point after receiving a second code violation for violently smashing his racket on the court in the subsequent changeover, before Seppi served out the set to begin taking control of the match.

He dropped serve twice more as Seppi dashed through the fourth set to force a decider– two years after Kyrgios denied the Italian 8-6 in the fifth set on the same court at Melbourne Park.

Former world No. 1 American Jim Courier described Kyrgios’ behavior as “apathetic.”

“He seems to be making a specific point to someone in his team that they messed up,” Courier said. “At one point, does he re-engage?”

Kyrgios earned a match point in the 17th game of the wild final set, although Seppi fired a vicious forehand winner down the line to stay alive before breaking Kyrigos and finally closing the contest after three hours and nine minutes.

“I just kept fighting,” Seppi said. “Maybe it was meant to be.”

Seppi next faces world No. 71 Steve Darcis of Belgium on Friday, with a probable fourth-round showdown with triple Grand Slam champion and reigning US Open winner Stan Wawrinka coming soon afterwards.

On the women’s side, world No. 1 Angelique Kerber of Germany got to celebrate her 29th birthday by defeating countrywoman Carina Witthoeft 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-2.

Several Americans, including John Isner, Steve Johnson and Shelby Rogers, all crashed out Wednesday.

American Sam Querrey, however, remains alive, and will next face world No. 1 Andy Murray in the third round.
