One of the top NHL players on the rumor mill, Timo Meier, is drawing big interest from multiple teams including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights.

Other clubs with “significant interest” in the San Jose Sharks forward include the New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes, reports NHL Network studio analyst Kevin Weeks.

Meier when compared to other trade targets this season is one of the more interesting players available.

This is because he isn’t just a rental.

The 26-year-old, who carries a $6 million cap hit will be a restricted free agent (RFA) after the season ends.

That means should another organization try to sign him in July, the team that owns his rights would receive draft pick compensation in return if signed to an offer sheet.

Also, the acquiring team could try to agree on a long-term contract extension.

But a contender in salary cap hell might have trouble squeezing him in because his qualifying offer is $10 million.

The Sharks, which are in rebuild mode, sit 7th in the Pacific Division and could decide to trade him if they don’t see him as a fit into the long-term plan.

Since there is no real rush for the Sharks to trade the top six winger, expect the acquisition cost to be high.

Likewise, it will cost a team at least a first-round pick, a top prospect and likely more since he isn’t a rental.

Many interested clubs including the Leafs and the Hurricanes do not have enough deadline cap space to fit Meier in at the moment.

They will need to send a player back the other way and/or have salary retained on Meier’s contract.

Meier this season with the Sharks has recorded 51 points in 54 games.

San Jose Shark’s star winger Evander Kane has been suspended from 21 regular-season NHL games for violating the league’s COVID-19 protocols. The announcement comes less than a month after allegations surfaced that he used a fake COVID-19 vaccination card.

Kane will go without pay during his suspension, according to the NHL. He isn’t eligible to return to the team until their Nov. 30 match against the New Jersey Devils. “I would like to apologize to my teammates, the San Jose Sharks organization, and all Sharks fans for violating the NHL COVID protocols,” Kane said in a statement on Monday. “I made a mistake, one I sincerely regret and take responsibility for. During my suspension, I will continue to participate in counseling to help me make better decisions in the future. When my suspension is over, I plan to return to the ice with great effort, determination, and love for the game of hockey.”

The Sharks as a franchise also released a statement on Monday on their winger. “While we are encouraged by Evander’s commitment to moving forward, we are extremely disappointed by his disregard for the health and safety protocols put in place by the NHL and the NHLPA,” it said.

The NHL said it had concluded another investigation into allegations of domestic violence against Kane made by his estranged in a recent divorce filing. The NHL said that “its concurrent investigation into allegations of domestic abuse made against Kane by his estranged wife, [Anna], could not be substantiated.”

Hopefully, Kane can keep his name out of the tabloids for the rest of the 2021 season.

Earlier this week, a restraining order was filed against Evander Kane, a forward on the San Jose Sharks by Anna Kane — Kane’s estranged wife — citing sexual and physical abuse. The requested order was filed with the Santa Clara Family Court.

This is the most recent development in a saga that spans the course of two years. Although, it has only been public knowledge since July when Anna filed for divorce. Since then, there have been several allegations from both parties claiming domestic violence. Evander had also previously filed for a restraining order against Anna.

At the end of July, Anna claimed that Evander was gambling on NHL games and purposely losing games to win money. The NHL immediately opened investigations and eventually ruled that there was no evidence of foul play. This was just the beginning. Recently, more allegations have been brought up against Evander, but this time they are even more serious and quite dark.

Anna wrote about her husband’s evolution stating, “In the early part of our marriage it was verbal abuse… But eventually, I became his punching bag.” In the restraining order filing, Anna describes disturbing acts of violence and sexual assault that she endured when Evander was angry.

Joe Thornton will play the 24th season of his career after signing a one-year deal with the Florida Panthers. The 42-year-old center will earn $750,000 on the deal with no bonuses or incentives.

“I see their team on paper, I watched their team last year, I love their team, and that’s it,” Thornton said of his new team. “I love what they’re building, and I’m excited to be part of it. But everything is about ultimately winning the Stanley Cup, and the Panthers are right there, in my opinion.”

The star center is one of the highest-scoring centers of all time. He is ninth in all-time points by a center with 1,529 points, is seventh in career assists with 1,104, 14th all-time for points and only five points away from becoming 12th.

Thorton said that he was impressed by the Panthers during their playoff series with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Panthers contacted the center weeks ago to bring him on the team.

“The energy these guys bring every day, they want to work every day, they want to get better every day,” Thornton said. “I’m just really looking forward to joining them on the journey.”

“The body feels good, the mind feels good, and I knew pretty much after the season, I started training right away and I felt good,” Thornton said. “Here we go again.”

The star center spent 15 seasons of his career with the San Jose Sharks. Last season, he spent one season with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

“His drive to succeed is unmistakable, and we are thrilled that he chose to sign with our club,” Panthers general manager Bill Zito said.

The NHL trade deadline ended on Monday afternoon. Various teams rushed to make last-minute deals in order to either strengthen or rebuild their respective rosters. Here are some of the biggest trades that went down just ahead of the National Hockey League’s trade deadline. We take a look at a few trades from Sunday and every major move from Monday.

1) The Colorado Avalanche acquired Carl Soderberg from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for prospects Josh Dickinson and Ryder Rolston.

2) Colorado gets defender Patrik Nemeth from the Detroit Red Wings fora 2022 fourth-round pick.

3) Colorado acquires goaltender Devan Dubnyk from the San Jose Sharks for Greg Pateryn and a 2021 fifth-round pick.

Soderberg marks his return to Colorado with this trade. Soderberg previously played for the Avalanche from 2015-2019. Colorado traded him to the Arizona in 2019. The Avalanche get a veteran to bolster their team, which is currently in first place in the Western Conference. The Blackhawks gain prospects Dickinson and Rolston.

The Avalanche continues to make moves to improve their roster and gear up for a deep playoff run. The team seems to be doing this by acquiring previous franchise players. Nemeth played with Colorado when Soderberg was part of the team.

Colorado also gets a veteran goalie to help their goaltending depth and needs.

4) Detroit trades F Anthony Mantha to the Washington Capitals for F Richard Panik, F Jakub Vrana, a 2021 first-round pick and a 2022 second-round pick.

Clearly, the Red Wings are stockpiling picks and young assets while trading away their stars as they begin the rebuilding process.

5) The Capitals also acquired forward Michael Raffl from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a 2021 fifth-round draft pick.

Matha, the 26-year-old forward, has produced 21 points (11 goals and 10 assists) in 42 games this season. He should be a great addition to the Capitals’ high-volume offense featuring Alex Ovechkin. Matha is the high-profile addition here, but Raffl isn’t too shabby either. He has three goals and five assists in 34 games for the Flyers this year.

“We really liked Anthony for quite a while now,” Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said. “I like a lot of the attributes: the size (6-foot-5, 234 pounds), the skill, the shot, the scoring ability. He’s a really good skater for his size. I think it’s a player that we’ve liked and talked about a lot in our room, and we had a chance to acquire him, so we went out and got him.”

5) The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired F Nick Foligno from the Columbus Blue Jackets and F Stefan Noesan from the Sharks in a three-team deal in exchange for a 2021 first-round pick, a 2021 fourth-round pick as well as a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

6) Toronto also added goalie David Rittich from the Calgary Flames for a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

7) Toronto traded a 2022 fifth-round draft pick for defender Ben Hutton from the Anaheim Ducks.

8) Toronto sent forward Alexander Barabanov to the Sharks for forward Anti Suomela.

The Maple Leafs were in a full-blown buy mode. They are attempting to make a deep postseason run, and adding Foligno will certainly take some pressure off of Auston Matthews and John Tavares. Toronto has put all their chips on the table and are going all-in on this season. It is championship or bust for the Maple Leafs.

“I felt that the group of players and coaches deserved every effort on our end, on management, to bolster the team and try to give us as great a chance as possible down the stretch in our division and into the playoffs,” Toronto general manager Kyle Dubas said. “We were excited to be able to, we believe, add the pieces that will continue to enhance our ability to be as competitive as possible as we go into the playoffs and roll from there.”

9) The Boston Bruins acquired Taylor Hall and Curtis Lazar from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Anders Bjork and a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

10) The Ottawa Senators dealt Mike Reilly to the Bruins and sent Braydon Coburn to the New York Islanders. The Senators received a third-round pick and seventh-round pick in 2022 for the two players.

After signing a one-year, $8 million dollar deal before the star of the season, Hall can become a free agent at the end of the season. The 29-year-old forward has tallied 19 points (two goals and 17 assists) in 37 games for the struggling Sabres this season.

As the No. 1 pick by the Oilers in the 2010 NHL Draft, Hall has scored 582 points (220 goals, 362 assists) in 664 regular-season games for the Sabres, Devils, Coyotes and Oilers. He won the Hart Trophy in 2017-18 when he was voted as the NHL most valuable player after scoring an NHL career-high 93 points (39 goals, 54 assists) in 76 games for the Devils.

Adding Reilly also helps bolster Boston’s defense. The 27-year-old has 19 assists in 40 games this season. The Bruins’ defense has been extremely banged up this season so Reilly will be a welcome addition to Boston.

Right now, the Bruins are in fourth place in the MassMutual East Division. Since the top four teams make the playoffs, this move should help Boston’s chances of making a Stanley Cup run.

11) The Winnipeg Jets acquired defensemen Jordie Benn from the Vancouver Canucks for a 2021 sixth-round draft pick.

12) The Nashville Predators received defenseman Erik Gudbranson from Ottawa in exchange for defenseman Brandon Fortunato and 2023 seventh-round draft pick.

13) The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenseman Erik Gustafsson from Philadelphia in exchange for a 2022 seventh-round draft pick.

14) The Florida Panthers added forward Sam Bennett and a 2022 sixth-round draft pick from Calgary in exchange for forward Emil Heineman and a 2022 second-round draft pick.

15) The Canucks acquired defenseman Madison Bowey and a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft from Chicago in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.

16) Anaheim landed defenseman Haydn Fleury from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Jani Hakanpaa and a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

17) The Vegas Golden Knights acquired forward Mattias Janmark, defenseman Nick DeSimone and a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft from Chicago and San Jose in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. San Jose additionally receives a fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft.

18) The Tampa Bay Lightning acquire defenseman Fredrik Claesson from the Sharks for goaltender Magnus Chrona.

19) The Edmonton Oilers landed defenseman Dmitry Kulikov from the Devils for a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

20) The Blackhawks acquired forward Adam Gaudette from Vancouver in exchange for forward Matthew Highmore.

21) The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired forward Jeff Carter from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for conditional draft picks in 2022 and 2023.

San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane filed for bankruptcy as he is drowning in $26.8 million of debt. Kane filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in California, including $10.22 million in assets, including three homes.

In 2018, Kane signed a seven-year, $49 million extension to stay with the San Jose Sharks. He has earned $52.9 million in salary over 11 years playing for the NHL. Over the course of his career, Kane has played with the Winnipeg Jets and Buffalo Sabres in addition to his tenure with the Sharks.

Recently, Centennial Bank filed an $8.3 million lawsuit in Florida federal court against both Kane, and the San Jose Sharks.

According to this filing, there is a chance that Kane does not play in the upcoming NHL season. However, he has been spotted at training camp and has not made any public comments about not playing this season. Additionally, the Sharks have not made any comments about Kane missing the season either.

The NHL opt-out deadline for the COVID-19 abbreviated season which begins within a week was Dec. 24, and the bankruptcy petition is dated Jan. 9.

The bankruptcy petition said, “Debtor may terminate his contract and he may opt out of the season, as allowed under current rules, because of health concerns given the recent birth of his first child. Should he terminate his contract or opt out at a point in the season, Debtor will not receive his salary.”

Kaplan notes that there are seven dependents living with Kane. These dependents include his six-month-old daughter, his sister, who is 27 years old, his two uncles, who are 54 and 59, his mother who is 55, his father who is 60 and his grandmother, who is 77.

San Jose Sharks’ Evander Kane has been suspended by the NHL for ‘physical abuse against an official’ in a preseason game against the Vegas Golden Knights. He will not play the season’s first three games.

Kane has been in trouble a couple of times before as he was accused of assault, after an incident in Vancouver, and sued for financial damages on April 3, 2014. On August 1, 2016, Kane pleaded not guilty to charges alleging he grabbed three women during an altercation at a bar that year. Charges were dismissed.

The latest altercation was provoked by Vegas’ defenseman Deryk Engeland as Engeland held Kane’s hockey stick while going down after a hit with Kane. Kane complained to the official as Engeland made his way up and went after Kane a second time (the puck was nowhere near by). When the official came to break it up, Engeland continued to go after Kane, then Kane went to slap Engeland in the backside and got the ref instead as he was leading Engeland from behind.

But that is not where Kane made the more serious contact with the ref. Kane came back to challenge Engeland and the ref got in the way and tackled Kane. As Kane was trying to make his way up, the ref was holding him. Kane shoved the ref, getting himself kicked out off the game. As he was leaving, Kane could be seen wrathfully yelling at the ref.

“I get kicked out of the game for getting jumped from behind by a referee. I’ve never seen a ref take five strides,” he said after the game. “If you look at his face, he’s getting all this power, and he’s trying to drive me into the ice, which is what he did. That’s unbelievable. Talk about abuse of an official? How about abuse of a player? It’s an absolute joke.”

After years of injuries and a strike shortened season, a fully healthy Kane signed with the San Jose Sharks and showed what he can do. Rewarded with a seven-year $49 million contract worth $7 million annually, if the suspension holds, he will forfeit $112,903.23.

Kane will not get his revenge on Engeland this week as the Sharks begin their season on Wednesday in Las Vegas, and their second game on Friday at home against the same Golden Knights.

The San Jose Sharks don’t tend to deviate from the script. When faced with a 2-0 deficit after the St. Louis Blues found themselves firing on all cylinders, they turned to former ninth overall pick Logan Couture. The Canadian center found the back of the net twice within a two-minute span and tied up the game 2-2. That gave him an-NHL leading 13 goals in these Stanley Cup playoffs.

However, the Blues have lived on the edge for most of this postseason. In round two, they went to seven games against the Dallas Stars. So for fans, they were ready for a shock. That came when defenseman Robert Bortuzzo, who had scored only 14 goals in 365 regular seasons and playoff games, increased the score with his first career postseason goal.

“It’s not really my game but it’s something that goes in the back of your mind,” Bortuzzo said. “Jaden (Schwartz) will remember, I told him if I do score a playoff goal you’ll like the celebration. You never can plan what you’re going to do. It’s just a rush of emotion. It’s an intense game out there. That’s all it is, emotion coming to the surface.”

Bortuzzo made true on that prediction. He pumped his fist, yelled, and held his arms out to embrace his teammates.

Goalie Jordan Binnington made 23 saves in game two to even up the series. Besides Couture, San Jose couldn’t find anymore offense and lost 4-2.

“Pretty solid game tonight,” Binnington said. “We had a good start, we were disciplined. When they tied it up, we stayed composed. That’s really important, this time of year especially. We enjoyed the moment and competed hard until the end.”

In three series this postseason, the Sharks have lost three Game two’s after convincing wins to open up the series. These two teams will face off for Game three on Wednesday night in St. Louis.

The NHL trade deadline started off slowly. However, before the deadline at 3 p.m. EST on Monday, 35 different players and 18 picks were shuffled around the league as some teams hoped to rebuild and others tried to reload.

Rangers, Sharks Win Big At Deadline

The 23 swaps this year are up from 18 in 2018 and 2017, 17 in 2016, and just below the 24 trades in 2015.

The Ottowa Senators, New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Columbus Blue Jackets and the San Jose Sharks came out on top of the deadline.

The Senators were dealt a poor hand. After not resigning any of their soon-to-be free agents, general manager Pierre Dorion prevented them from walking away empty-handed. Erik Karlsson, Mark Stone, Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel all rejected the idea of sticking around in Ottowa. Though the organization is a mess and the team is without their 2019 draft pick, they got back a monster haul. This year, they hold seven draft picks and in 2020 they’ll have 13, including three in the first round alone.

Meanwhile, the New York Rangers continued on with their fire sale. After Ottowa shipped off Duchene, center Kevin Hayes‘ value shot up. The Rangers flipped him to the Winnipeg Jets for a first-round pick and a decent forward. Then, they were able to turn 32-year-old defender Adam McQuaid into two late-round draft picks. Though King Henrik Lundqvist is all alone on a dismal team, they’ve got 10 picks in the upcoming draft and only $61 million on the books for next season.

The Lightning didn’t have to do anything to win. They pulled in their talent early with Ryan McDonagh and J.T. Miller joining the team last year from the Rangers. Instead, they’ve got 98 points in 62 games and much less competition as all of the talent in the east went out west.

The Blue Jackets found themselves in a weird spot. They could’ve imploded after Artemi Panarin demanded out along with the possibility that Sergei Bobrovsky wouldn’t be on the team. Instead, they added Duchene and Dzingel and are hoping to make a deep run into the playoffs. While it’s left the team depleted with picks and betting on free agents, for a team that hasn’t even sniffed the second round of the playoffs, these are the right moves to make.

Any fan of the San Jose Sharks can’t complain about the deals they’ve made. While sitting on second place in the Pacific Division, they doubled down and added Gustav Nyquist. He’s been good for 49 points in 63 games and could be the piece that catapults them over the top. He’s been shaky in the playoffs but as a third option, no team would complain.

Now, with the dust settling, all that matters for these teams is hoisting the Stanley Cup come June.

The San Jose Sharks have been aggressive this year. No team has been as keen as adding on high-end talent as the Sharks were.

Wings Trade Gustav Nyqvist To Sharks

Currently, they’re sitting in second place in the Pacific Division, just below the Calgary Flames but ahead of the Vegas Golden Knights. On Sunday, they added another star when they shipped off two draft picks to the Detroit Red Wings and brought in forward Gustav Nyquist as the Monday trade deadline loomed closer.

Nyquist is only 29 years old and was leading the Red Wings in scoring this season. He notched 49 points with 16 goals and 33 assists in 62 games. Though San Jose wanted him, he’s only a rental player with his contract up this summer. Then, he’ll hit the market as an unrestricted free agent. But that shouldn’t matter for the Sharks as they’re banking heavily on this season and Nyquist has shown he wants to be in San Jose. He had to waive his no-trade clause for the deal. The Red Wings still retain 30% of the Swedish talent’s contract, bringing his cap hit to $3.325 million.

“Gustav is a talented, versatile forward who plays with speed and a strong hockey sense,” Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. “His track record of strong play and character speak for themselves, and we’re very excited to add him to our dressing room.”

Detroit will get the less valuable of San Jose and Florida’s second-round pick in 2019 and also San Jose’s third-round 2020 selection. There’s a clause in the deal that if Nyquist pushes the team to the Stanley Cup Finals this year or if he re-signs this offseason, the 2020 selection turns into a second-rounder.

The move is an impressive piece of work by Wilson. It brings in new talent while also keeping the team just under the salary cap ceiling with just over $79 million in contracts to pay out. Interestingly, a week before the trade, Nyquist revealed that his biggest fear is sharks.

The San Jose Sharks acquire two-time Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Erik Karlsson from the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

In what has been a turbulent stretch for the Senators, the team trades 28-year-old star Swedish defenceman Karlsson and prospect forward Francis Perron to the Sharks.

San Jose dealt forwards Chris Tierney and Rudolfs Balcers, defenseman Dylan DeMelo, and prospect forward Josh Norris.

The deal also includes the Shark’s first-round pick in 2020, a second-round pick in 2019 and a conditional second-round pick in 2021.

“It’s extremely rare that players of this caliber become available,” said General Manager Doug Wilson. “The word ‘elite’ is often thrown around casually, but Erik’s skill set and abilities fit that description like few other players in today’s game. With Erik, Brent Burns and Marc-Edouard Vlasic, we feel we have three of the N.H.L.’s top defensemen and stand as a better team today than we were yesterday.”

On Friday, the star defenseman sent a message of gratitude to the city of Ottawa via Twitter.

Senators General Manager Pierre Dorion said: “This is the right moment for us to rebuild our team, and shape our future with a faster, younger and more competitive team on the ice. We are going to build a culture of consistency which will allow this team to sustain better performance over the long term.”

“Erik is an exceptional hockey player whose skills delighted our fans for the past nine years,” Dorion said in a statement. “We thank him for his dedication to hockey, and we wish him all the best.”

After missing out on the high-scoring center John Tavares in free agency to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Sharks get the difference-maker that it was hoping in Karisson.

His .518 points are by far the most of any defenseman since he entered the N.H.L. in 2009.

Last season put up 62 points (nine goals) and 53 assists. He also led the team in average ice time (26 minutes 44 seconds, third in the N.H.L.), and was second in blocked shots (120) and takeaways (55).

Karlsson also has six goals and 31 assists in 48 career playoff games.

“I wish we were standing here in different circumstances. It’s an emotional and sad day,” said Karlsson in an emotional news conference. “I don’t think that I’ve ever in my wildest imagination thought that I would ever leave this place. But, unfortunately, we’re here under these circumstances and, again, that’s not something I’m going to go into detail about.

“I was prepared to come here and work hard for this team. I still have a year left on my deal but unfortunately I couldn’t follow that through.”

As Karlsson makes the transition to San Jose he joins one of the top defensive groups in the league alongside the 2017 Norris Trophy winner Brent Burns and the shutdown defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

He’ll get a chance to face his former team on December 1 in Ottawa at 1 p.m. EST.

The Ottawa Senators on Tuesday traded winger Mike Hoffman to the San Jose Sharks, who then sent him to the Florida Panthers.

The move comes almost a week after allegations of cyber-bullying were made against Hoffman’s fianceé Monika Caryk. On May 4, Melinda Karlsson — the wife of Senators captain Erik Karlsson — reportedly filed a protection order against Caryk, claiming Hoffman’s fianceé had harassed her online.

Melinda Karlsson accused Caryk of making “numerous statements wishing my unborn child dead” in a series of tweets and other social media posts, according to The Ottawa Citizen. 

Karlsson and her husband had a son named Axel in March but he was stillborn, and Melinda reportedly received several offensive messages online after that.

Melinda Karlsson also claimed Caryk used a pseudonym to post the hurtful comments and that she “uttered that she wished I was dead and that someone should ‘take out’ my husband’s legs to end his career.”

According to the Citizen, Hoffman denied the allegations against his fianceé. The Senators, meanwhile, issued a statement saying they would investigate the matter in coordination with the NHL.

Ottawa traded Hoffman to the Sharks for Mikkel Boedker as part of a deal that also saw defenseman Cody Donaghey and a fifth-round 2020 draft pick leave for San Jose. The Senators also got defenseman Julius Bergman and a 2020 sixth-round pick.

The Sharks then dealt Hoffman and a seventh-round pick to the Panthers for second, fourth and fifth-round picks.

Karlson has a chance to sign a new contract with the Senators starting July 1. He could become an unrestricted free agent during the summer of 2019.

Left winger Evander Kane recently signed a seven-year, $49 million deal with the Sharks.

Marc-Andre Fleury has made some impressive saves in his career, but one stop in particular stood out on Monday night.

The Vegas Golden Knights goaltender had a huge save in overtime of the team’s 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks in Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals at SAP Center.

San Jose’s Joe Pavelski faked a wraparound behind Fleury’s net and passed to Logan Couture, who fired a quick, strong shot from close range 3:10 into overtime. Fleury, a Canadian former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie, denied Couture by spreading his legs out and doing a full split onto the ice while also shooting his left hand into the air to snag the puck.

“I was looking at the guy with the puck,” Fleury said, per NHL.com. “I just tried to follow the pass and get out there a bit and I had a little time to react on it. It was a good feeling.”

Fleury, 33, finished with 39 saves on Monday. He now has six wins in the playoffs.

The Golden Knights — who now lead the second-round playoff series 2-1 — were left in awe by their goalie’s amazing skill.

William Karklsson scored the game-winning goal for Vegas at 8:17 of overtime.

After crushing the Sharks 7-0 in Game 1 of Round 2 on Thursday, the Golden Knights lost 4-3 to San Jose in double overtime in Game 2 on Saturday.

Game 4 is set for Wednesday at 10pm EST in San Jose. The game will air on NBC Sports Network.

The Vegas Golden Knights defeated San Jose 7-0 in the opening game of the second round of the Western Conference playoffs on Thursday night to hand the Sharks one of their most brutal postseason defeats in recent history.

The Sharks’ defeat at T-Mobile Arena marked their worst playoff loss since May 1995, when they fell to the Calgary Flames 9-2 in Game 3 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.

San Jose swept the Anaheim Ducks inn the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and gave up just four goals in those four games. Goalie Martin Jones also allowed four goals on Thursday in the first 11:43 of the matchup.

Jones finished with eight saves on Thursday and backup Aaron Dell eventually replaced him 3:28 into the second period after Knights defenseman Shea Theodore put the hosts up 5-0.

“Sometimes you need a save just to settle things down,” Jones said, per NHL.com. “Just didn’t come up with it tonight.”

Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer said Jones was not solely responsible for the team’s loss.

“We haven’t played in a week,” DeBoer stated. “I didn’t want him coming out. He needs some action. He couldn’t do much on those goals. That was on us, as a group. It wasn’t on him.”

In Game 3 of the first-round series, the Sharks routed the Ducks 8-1 in San Jose. Anaheim fell apart in the third period and drew several penalties.

On Thursday, it was San Jose that lost its cool in the contest. Sharks forward Evander Kane earned himself a five-minute major and an automatic game misconduct just 3:25 into the final period after he cross-checked Vegas forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare.

Game 2 will be held Saturday at 8pm EST in Las Vegas.

Goalkeeper Martin Jones put on a great performance, and the San Jose Sharks edged the Anaheim Ducks 2-1 at home on Wednesday night to sweep their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series.

Jones finished with 30 saves, 14 of them in the second period of Game 4.

“We’re playing well going into the second round,” stated defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic. “Everybody is contributing if it’s offensively, blocking shots, taking a hit. Everybody is doing what they have to for us to win.”

San Jose outscored Anaheim 16-4 in this four-game series. In the middle period on Wednesday, the Sharks struggled significantly, and several of the team’s players credited Jones with keeping it from becoming a total disaster. During that frame, the goaltender helped kill three of San Jose’s four penalties of the night.

Marcus Sorensen’s goal in the first period, his third of the playoffs, gave San Jose a 1-0 lead. Anaheim’s Andrew Cogliano tied it 1-1 at 7:53 of the final period with a shot from the slot. Then just 1:16 later, the Sharks got up 2-1 when Vlasic’s point shot bounced off Tomas Hertl and into the net.

“I’m just really proud of our group, the resiliency, the composure,” stated Sharks coach Peter DeBoer. “We asked them to come into this series and play with composure. We knew what we were going to get, they were going to try to push us out of the series physically. We stood in there and did it without taking penalties and with discipline.”

The Sharks will next visit the Vegas Golden Knights for Game 1 of the Western Conference second-round playoff series. The date and time of that opening game have yet to be announced. The Golden Knights also swept the Los Angeles Kings in four games.

The Sharks were eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers in six games in the first round of the playoffs this year.

Tuukka Rask made 29 saves, and Brad Marchand scored on a breakaway at 2:36 of overtime to lift the Boston Bruins to a 2-1 road victory over the San Jose Sharks on Sunday.

Bruins Beat Sharks for Fourth Straight Win

Ryan Spooner also scored for the Bruins, who have won four consecutive games under interim coach Bruce Cassidy. Boston (30-23-6) is also third in the Atlantic Division.

“I thought we started pretty sharp,” Rask said. “We definitely had our legs in the first. They got the better of us in the second period maybe, even though we had some looks. Pretty tight game. They’re a very good team, and we had to grind it out today. We didn’t look sluggish at all.”

The Bruins also defeated the Sharks 6-3 in Boston on February 9.

Patrick Marleau scored the lone goal for the Sharks (35-18-7), who have lost six of eight games heading into their bye week. Martin Jones stopped 25 shots. The Sharks lead the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks by five points for first in the Pacific Division..

Spooner put the Bruins up 1-0 at 11:05 of the first period by picking up a rebound off the end boards and firing the puck inside the right post. Jimmy Hayes had the main assist for his 100th NHL point.

San Jose tied it with 2:23 remaining in the second when Marleau scored at 4-on-4 following roughing penalties to the Sharks’ Brenden Dillon and the Bruins’ Riley Nash. 

Torey Krug, who played in his 300th NHL game, blocked Brent Burns’ shot from above the right face-off circle, but the puck deflected to Marleau in the left circle, and he cracked a shot into a wide-open net.

Sharks forward Joonas Donskoi missed his 12th straight game with an upper-body injury.

The Bruins next visit the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday, while the Sharks will visit the Vancouver on Saturday.

Come-from-behind victories have become prevalent in sports recently.

Sabres Beat Sharks 5-4 In OT After Trailing By Three Goals

The San Jose Sharks blew a 4-1 lead by allowing three third-period goals and then the deciding goal in overtime to eventually suffer a crushing 5-4 road loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.

Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said he sympathized with how the Atlanta Falcons and their head coach Dadn Quinn probably felt after after losing a 28-3 lead to fall to the New England Patriots in overtime at Super Bowl LI on Sunday.

“I felt like Dan Quinn,” DeBoer said. “Thank God it wasn’t the finals. It was a game in the middle of February.”

The Sabres had been booed off the ice after two periods, but after they tied it 4-4 in the third frame with three goals in a span of 3:28, Jack Eichel set up Evander Kane 1:05 into overtime. Kane’s goal was his 16th of the season.

“We get the building going, get some energy in here after they were booing us off the ice, and we win a game in overtime and everyone loves us again,” said Eichel, who had two assists. “It’s interesting how that works.”

The Sabres (22-21-10) are 6-0-1 in their last seven home games and 17-1-1 against the Sharks all-time at home. San Jose (33-17-4) snapped a four-game road win streak.

Ryan O’Reilly made it 4-2 with a power-play goal 9:03 into the third. Kane followed that 2:33 later by beating Sharks goalie Martin Jones with a wraparound goal.

DeBoer challenged the goal, claiming Sabres forward Tyler Ennis was offside, but video review was inconclusive and the goal stood.

Kyle Okposo then one-timed in Sam Reinhart’s centering pass to tie it 4-4 with 7:29 remaining in regulation.

Then came Kane’s winner, which was set up by Eichel on a 2-on-1. Immediately after his big goal that sealed the comeback win, Kane crashed headfirst into the end boards.

Joel Ward, Logan Couture, Joe Pavelski and Melker Karlsson scored for San Jose. Brent Burns had two assists.

The Sharks seemed to be in total control of the game when Pavelski one-timed in Burns’ pass on a power play to make it 4-1 at 6:07 of the third period.

“It’s just one of those games that for them to come back, everything worked out just perfect,” Pavelski said. “Doesn’t matter how perfect it works, though. You can’t give up that kind of lead.”

The Sharks will next visit the Boston Bruins on Thursday, when the Sabres host the Anaheim Ducks.

Chris Kreider continued his powerful start to the season, and rookie Jimmy Vesey’s first career NHL goal turned into the game-winner in the New York Rangers‘ 7-4 home victory over the San Jose Sharks on Monday.

Chris Kreider’ Strong Season Start Continues In Rangers’ 7-4 Win Over Sharks

Kreider earned his third consecutive game with a goal and an assist, giving him three of each in the first three games.

Entering his fourth NHL season, the left wing– a product of Boston College– is garnering much praise.

“He’s a power forward who is playing to his strengths,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said of Kreider. “He’s tough to handle right now, whether on the initial rush or down low in the opposition’s end. He makes it real challenging for the other team.”\

Kreider signed a four-year, $18.5 million contract on July 22.

Vesey’s first career goal came at 12:37 of the third period to put New York up 5-2. It came 21 seconds after center Kevin Hayes scored. Sharks defenseman Brent Burns (13:57) and forward Joe Pavelski (15:31) scored shortly afterwards.

Vesey, last season’s Hobey Baker Award winner out of Harvard who signed with the Rangers as an unrestricted free agent on Aug. 20, received a standing ovation when his goal was announced.

Wingers Mats Zuccarello and Michael Grabner scored empty-net goals to secure the win for the Rangers (2-1-0), who handed the Sharks their first loss of the season (2-1-0).

“Definitely just pure joy,” Vesey said of his goal. “I think I expressed it a little on the ice. I think I gave two fist pumps.”

Rangers goalie Antti Raanta had 21 saves in his first start. Zuccarello had three points on a goal and two assists. Marc Staal, Rick Nash and Hayes scored their first goals, while captain Ryan McDonagh and center Derek Stepan had two assists.

Sharks goalie Martin Jones made 22 saves.

Burns scored twice in the third period to give him three goals this season. He also recorded an assist on Pavelski’s goal. Pavelski had three assists for a four-point game. Center Logan Couture scored a 5-on-3 goal at 19:02 of the first period.

“They’re the Stanley Cup finalist and they had one of the best road records last year, so we knew they were going to have a push; made it an exciting game,” Vigneault said. “Unfortunately they got a couple good opportunities in the third, but other than that I thought we played a real solid game.”

Kreider pushed the Rangers’ lead to 3-1 with a power-play goal at 10:21 of the second. Burns scored at 9:13 of the third period to trim the deficit to 3-2, thus sparking a stretch that featured seven goals in the final 10:47 of the game.

According to the Rangers, Kreider is the team’s first player since Brian Leetch in 1992-93 to tally six points in New York’s first three games. He also became the first New York forward to record six points in three games to start a season since Bernie Nicholls and Darren Turcotte in 1990-91.

“You want to play instinctually,” Kreider said. “You simplify your game; you get back to the stuff you know you do well. A lot of time that adversity helps you focus. From there, lock in on what you do well and do on a consistent basis.”

The Sharks will next visit the New York Islanders on Tuesday, while the Rangers will host the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins clinched their fourth national championship title after defeating the San Jose Sharks at the SAP Center in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals on Sunday night. Pittsburgh’s last Stanley Cup title came in 2009.

Penguins Beat Sharks 3-1 In Game 6 For Fourth Stanley Cup Title

Captain Sidney Crosby fed defenseman Kris Letang for a one-timer low in the right face-off circle that found its way into the net at 7:46 of the second period to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead.

The game began with a minute of silence for the victims of the shootings at gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida on Saturday night, and ended after Crosby cleared the puck the length of the ice with the Sharks on a power play, and then the Penguins began celebrating.

“Man, I’m going to remember this day for the rest of my entire life,” said 22-year-old rookie Pittsburgh goaltender Matt Murray. “I probably won’t believe this until next year, to be honest. It’s so surreal.” Murray had 18 saves and was 6-0 with a 1.63 goals-against average and .936 save percentage, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Brian Dumoulin opened up scoring on a power play at 8:16 of the first, after San Jose forward Dainius Zibrus was sent to the penalty box for tripping. Dumoulin took a shot from the left point that flew past Sharks goalie Martin Jones to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. Jones, who finished with 24 saves, made two key stops on Crosby later in the period, however, that came in a five-second span after a Sharks giveaway.

San Jose tied the game at 6:27 of the second period when center Logan Couture used Pittsburgh defenseman Justin Schultz as a screen and beat Murray with a 21-foot wrist shot. The goal marked Couture’s 30th point of the postseason, the best in the NHL.

Letang then answered 79 seconds later to put the Penguins ahead, and Crosby added yet another assist to Patrick Hornqvist, who scored an empty-net goal with 1:02 remaining in the game to seal the victory.

“It’s so hard to win it year after year,” said owner Mario Lemieux, who won back-to-back titles and Conn Smythe trophies as a player for Pittsburgh. “For them to be able to come through this year and win their second Cup is big. Hopefully there’s a few more for them.”

Crosby, who finished with 19 postseason points, was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy, which is given to the MVP of the playoffs. In his post-game press conference, he compared the win to his team’s prevoius title seven years ago.

“I have a greater appreciation this time around,” the 28-year-old Crosby said, noting that after back-to-back appearances in the finals in 2008 and 2009, “you just think it’s going to be an annual thing.”

None of Pittsburgh’s four national championships have come on home ice.

“As I’ve said to them all along, I know our team is going to score goals,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “In order to win championships, you’ve got to keep it out of your net. You have to become a team that is stingy defensively. Everybody has to buy in to that idea for us to get to where we want to go. To their credit, they did, down to a man.”

The Penguins had entered the playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the Metropolitan Division, defeating the New York Rangers, Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning on route to the finals. They corrected their season after Sullivan replaced Mike Johnston on Dec. 12 as head coach when the team was near .500.

Despite the loss, Sharks coach Peter DeBoer expressed pride of his team, which finished third in the Pacific Division after victories over the Los Angeles Kings, the Nashville Predators and the St. Louis Blues.

I’m very proud of our group,” DeBoer said. “I thought our guys emptied the tank, gave us everything they possibly could. We weren’t as good as them during this two-week period.”
