The Washington Football Team has been strengthening their roster for a deep playoff run. The team had to fill the vacant quarterback spot that was left by Alex Smith’s retirement. Washington signed veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick, and they gave Taylor Heinicke a contract extension. Although there may be a quarterback competition for the starting spot, It is widely assumed that Fitzpatrick will win the job.

In the offseason, Washington signed talented wide receiver Curtis Samuel and cornerback William Jackson. These signings will help Washington contend for another NFC East title.

  • Week 17: Sun 1/02 vs Philadelphia Eagles
  • Week 18: Sun 01/09 at New York Giants

NFC East: The division was one of the worst in league history last season. Washington barely won the division over the Giants in 2020. Washington, Dallas and New York all have a chance at winning this division. Dallas will be bolstered again now that Dak Prescott is healthy. The Giants added several key offensive weapons, including Pro Bowl wideout Kenny Golladay. The Cowboys are the favorites to win the division, but Washington could also win it if they win their divisional games.

Matchups: Key games for Washington will be against their divisional foes, the Giants and Cowboys. Between Weeks 3 and Week 7, Washington will endure a stretch of tough games against the Bills, Chiefs, Saints and Packers. Once Washington returns from their bye week, they will be subjected to a game with Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in Week 10. Weeks 14 through Week 18 will be the most important stretch of games for the Football Team. They will face five division rivals in each of their final five games.

Overall: Washington has made the moves needed to remain competitive in the NFC East. Adding Fitzpatrick and Samuel will improve the offense. The defense is already elite.

Prediction: Washington will finish with a 9-8 record.

The Washington Football Team has agreed to terms with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The contract is a one-year deal worth $10 million but could grow to $12 million with incentives.

The addition of Fitzpatrick is a bit odd for a team that is looking to rebuild. Adding such an aged quarterback is a bit of a head scratcher, however, Fitzpatrick has had plenty of “FitzMagic” moments over his long career in the NFL. Signing the veteran quarterback is a short-term solution, but perhaps Washington believes it could still compete in the weakened NFC East. Despite paying good money for Fitzpatrick’s services, the veteran quarterback will still have to compete with other quarterbacks such as Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen for the starting job.

The 38-year old veteran is known to be a journeyman, having played with eight different teams in the league. Last season, Fitzpatrick played with the Miami Dolphins and was a mentor to rookie Tua Tagovailoa. The 38-year-old played in eight games for Miami and recorded 2,091 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and had a 68.5 percent completion rating in 2020.

Time will tell if Fitzpatrick can beat out Heinicke and Allen for the starting gig. If so, his top targets will be wide receiver Terry McLaurin and tight end Logan Thomas.

It’s that time of the year again. With the summer’s heat pounding down and the upcoming season’s pressure adding weight as well, the NFL’s backbreaking training camps commenced this week. As the season nears closer, players now look to solidify themselves apart their respective teams, coaches aim to mold rosters into winning squads, and fans trip over each other for autographs. With all the madness well in motion, take a look into camp and its most intriguing component, the quarterback competitions.

As the quarterback continues to hold the title as the most important position on gridiron, the battles to attain that starting job carry extreme gravity. Across the board a “young vs old” battle commences for multiple clubs this week. NFC East teams such as the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins both added quarterbacks in this draft, Daniel Jones for New York and Dwayne Haskins for Washington. DJ faces off against an aging, but still two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning. Meanwhile, Haskins battles journeyman Case Keenum.

For Haskins, his 50 touchdowns caught Washington’s eyes draft night. However, experience obviously favors Keenum over Haskins. Although last year served as a blemish upon his record as the Broncos missed the playoffs once more, Keenum lead the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Championship and remained within the MVP conversation throughout the year prior to that.

When the Giants took Jones at number six overall, greater criticisms came alongside him than Haskins, as many believe the Giants selected the Duke product far earlier than necessary. At the colligate level, Jones posted an admirable 131. 7 passer rating, however his case mirrors Washingtons’s, as Manning holds an experience based advantage. But with his decline becoming clear and the team’s apparent faith regarding Jones, it’s a more of a matter of “when” than “if” Jones replaces Manning.

After the Arizona Cardinals pulled the trigger to select Kyler Murray first overall, the team’s prior first round pick lost his footing with the team, as they promptly traded Josh Rosen to the Miami Dolphins. In Miami, Rosen opposes veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick. Although faltering during the season’s second half, Fitzpatrick threw the ball with the best of ‘em during his first games while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The gunslinger also put up noteworthy numbers four years ago while playing for the New York Jets, throwing for 3,905 yards. Rosen struggles appeared evident his rookie year with Arizona. Paring an 11 touchdowns to 14 interceptions, he eyes a fresh start, hoping to prove his worth as the former 10th overall pick.

Out West, Joe Flacco enters a bout with another rookie, Drew Lock. The ex–Missouri Tiger owned an impressive 28/8 touchdown to interception ratio last year, warranting the Broncos to select him with the 42nd overall pick. Before injury, last year Flacco earned a mediocre 84.2 passer rating. Now healthy, he looks resurge back into a starting role. Flacco, who once marched the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl title, looks to avoid another rookie outperforming him for the second season, as Lamar Jackson’s emergence last year for Baltimore basically sent him packing.

Jameis Winston Leads Bucs to 36-10 Win vs Bears

It looks like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be without their starting quarterback to begin the 2018-19 season, as Jameis Winston is facing a three-game suspension from the NFL due to an off-the-field incident involving an Uber driver from March of 2016.

Winston allegedly sexually assaulted a female Uber driver in Scottsdale, Arizona, which she revealed to BuzzFeed News in November of 2017. She indicated that Winston grabbed her crotch while they waited in a drive-thru line at fast food restaurant. While she did initially file a complaint with Uber, she did not speak out publicly at first because “I didn’t want to be publicly known as the woman who Jameis Winston groped.”

Winston has since denied these claims, as he said that the driver was “confused as to the number of passengers in the car and who was sitting next to her.”

In his statement, Winston added, “The accusation is false, and given the nature of the allegation and increased awareness and consideration of these types of matters, I am addressing this false report immediately. At the time of the alleged incident, I denied the allegations to Uber, yet they still decided to suspend my account.”

Winston is no stranger to off-the-field sexual assault charges. In 2012, while Winston was the quarterback for the Florida State Seminoles, a female FSU student accused him of rape. These charges prompted FSU coach Bobby Bowden to describe Winston as an “embarrassment,” although they were eventually settled in 2016.

When the Buccaneers took Winston with the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, they knew the risk that he presented from an off-the-field perspective. On the field, Winston has shown promise as an NFL quarterback, starting all 16 games during the 2015 and 2016 seasons, both of which saw him throw for over 4,000 yards. 2017 was expected by many to be his breakout campaign, but he had the worst numbers of his three year career and missed a trio of games due to injury. The Bucs eventually finished 2017 with a 5-11 record while going 3-10 with Winston under center.

Regardless of his play on the field, Winston’s actions are unacceptable and this suspension doesn’t exactly come as a surprise considering his history. Expect to see Ryan Fitzpatrick fill in for Winston as Tampa’s quarterback to start off the season.

David Johnson rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns, and the Arizona Cardinals thrashed Ryan Fitzpatrick and the aching New York Jets 28-3 in Glendale on Monday night.

Ryan Fitzpatrick Continues To Struggle As David Johnson, Cardinals Rout Jets 28-3

Johnson scored on runs of 58, 2 and 2 yards while becoming the first player to rush for three touchdowns against the Jets since LeSean McCoy did it five years ago.

The Cardinals (3-3) won their second consecutive game. The Jets (1-5) dropped their fourth straight in a rough return to Arizona for head coach Todd Bowles, who was defensive coordinator for the Cardinals for two seasons before landing with New York two years ago.

Fitzpatrick finished 16 of 31 for 174 yards, and was benched in favor of Geno Smith after the Jets’ longest drive of the game ended in an interception in the end zone late in the third quarter. Smith’s time at quarterback ended when he was intercepted by Tyrann Mathieu with 4:20 to play.

Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer, back after missing last week’s win over the 49ers due to a concussion, went 23 of 34 for 213 yards and exit the game with a hamstring strain after tossing a a 9-yard TD pass to Michael Floyd with 8:20 remaining.

Arizona scored in the first quarter for the first time this season on the second time Johnson touched the ball.

The second-year running back evaded a pair of defenders near the line of scrimmage, and then dashed to the end zone on his longest run of the season.

Johnson was coming off his best effort of the season– a 185-yard, two-touchdown explosion against San Francisco, a feat that earned him NFC offensive player of the week honors.

The Jets entered the game second in the NFL in rushing defense at 68 yards per game. They were out-gained on the ground 171-33.

New York had 130 yards in the first half, 70 on three receptions by Brandon Marshall. Marshall’s 36-yard catch over the middle set up the Jet’s only score, Nick Folk’s‘ 39-yard field goal.

The Cardinals scored on a pair of 14-play drives in the second half. Johnson scored his second, 2-yard TD run up the middle, and Palmer passed to Floyd for another TD.

The Jets reached the Cardinals 14 late in the third quarter but D.J. Swearinger intercepted Fitzpatrick’s pass in the end zone to stop the threat. It marked Fitzpatrick’s league-worst 11th interception of the season.

The Cardinals will next host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, while the Jets will host the Baltimore Ravens that same day.

Matt Forte, Ryan Fitzpatrick Lead Jets To 37-31 Win Over Bills

The Jets dominated first downs (28-15), time of possession (39:12-20:38) and total yards (493-365), as Fitzpatrick pummeled Buffalo’s secondary with accurate passes downfield. The Jets quarterback finished 24 of 34 for 374 yards and a 5-yard touchdown pass to Eric Decker.

Fitzpatrick’s 10 completions of at least 5 yards were tied for the third-most in the past 10 seasons.

Forte finished with 100 yards rushing, including a 3-yard run that put New York ahead 27-24 with 2:12 left in the third quarter. He secured the win by waiting for an opening before racing into the end zone from 12 yards to give the Jets a 37-24 lead with 4:02 left in the game.

The running back and offseason free-agent addition became the 13th New York player to score three rushing touchdowns in a game.

The Jets (1-1) rebounded from a season-opening loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, and ended a five-game skid against their AFC East rivals.

The Bills (0-2), meanwhile, took their second consecutive loss of the season after falling to the Ravens in Baltimore in Week 1. This is Ryan’s second season as Buffalo’s coach, and it’s been two years since he was fired by the Jets.

Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor bounced back five days after he was held to 111 yards passing against the Ravens. Taylor finished 18 of 30 for 298 yards and three touchdowns. Marquise Goodwin scored on an 84-yard catch, Greg Salas scored on a 7-yard catch and running back Mike Gillislee kept it close by snagging an 18-yard touchdown pass with 1:17 left.

Veteran Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall suffered a left knee injury in the second quarter. Marshall’s knee twisted awkwardly beneath him when cornerback Stephon Gilmore took him down by the facemask on a tackle that was penalized inside the red zone. Marshall lay on the ground, writhing in pain.

“Scary. It was very scary. It didn’t look good,” Fitzpatrick said about Marshall’s injury after the game. “It was such a relief to see him get back into the huddle.”

Marshall also caught Dan Carpenter’s onside kick.

New York scored on each of its first four possessions to gain a 20-7 lead. Forte scored on a 1-yard plunge, Fitzpatrick found Decker on the 5-yarder and Nick Folk hit a pair of field goals.

Buffalo rallied back to score on three consecutive possessions spanning halftime. Carpenter began the run by kicking a 39-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

The Bills then scored in a span of 2:07 to go ahead 24-20. After Salas scored, Bills safety Nickell Robey-Coleman returned Jalin Marshall’s fumble 36 yards for a touchdown on the Jets’ following possession.

The Bills will next host the Arizona Cardinals (0-1) on Sunday, Sept. 25, while the Jets will visit the Chiefs (1-0) in Kansas City that very same day.

Ryan Fitzpatrick May Be Back with Jets

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and the New York Jets remain at an impasse as training camp begins Wednesday in Florham Park, N.J.

The two sides have not spoken since contract talks broke off about a month ago and they remain “far apart” with no resolution in sight, according to ESPN‘s Ed Werder.

Stalemate Continues For Jets, Fitzpatrick As Training Camp Begins

New York offered Fitzpatrick a three-year, $24 million contract back in February, according to various reports, after the journeyman QB posted the best season of his career in 2015.

The sticking point for Fitzpatrick’s camp was that the offer included only $18 million in guarantees, $12 million for the first season and $6 million for the remaining two.

After throwing for a franchise-record, 31 touchdowns and a career-best 3,905 passing yards, Fitzpatrick believed he earned more guaranteed money, spurred by the Houston Texans signing of former Denver Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler, who inked a four-year, $72 million deal, with $37 million guaranteed.

RYAN FITZPATRICK 2015 HIGHLIGHTS

Osweiler has played in 21 games in his career and his signing bonus ($12 million) would equal the first year’s earnings for Fitzpatrick, should he sign the February offer.

A graduate of Harvard, Fitzpatrick, 33, earned $3.25 million in 2015, when he led the Jets to a 10-6 record, a year after going 4-12.

New York fell a win short of the playoffs after losing to the Buffalo Bills, and former head coach Rex Ryan, in the season finale.

The Jets and head coach Todd Bowles have continued to heap praise upon former starting signal-caller Geno Smith, who would be a front-runner to reclaim the role should Fitzpatrick not re-sign.

Bowles told reporters Smith is “light-years ahead” of where he was before last season, the head coach’s first in New York.

DAVID HARRIS IS HOPING RYAN FITZPATRICK RETURNS TO JETS

It was Fitzpatrick who was brought in to fill-in for Smith after he suffered a broken jaw as a result of an altercation with former Jets linebacker IK Enemkpali.

After starting the season 2-0, Fitzpatrick was named the full-time starter by Bowles.

Third-year quarterback Bryce Petty and rookie Christian Hackenberg are attempting to supplant Smith for the job if it remains vacant.

New York has maintained that Fitzpatrick is the starter if he signs.

The Jets signed defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson to a five-year, $86 million contract at the beginning of July, but that deal may have actually helped move the two sides closer to an agreement for Fitzpatrick.

“In theory it could help expand their options,” Jets beat reporter and ESPN Analyst Dan Graziano said. “Because they gained $5.7 million worth of cap room with (the Wilkerson contract).”

“Honestly I think they have a number in mind for Fitzpatrick and they are happy to have him back if he likes it and they’re happy to move on without him if he doesn’t.”

The New York Jets were looking to shift the momentum of this offseason. Although New York has yet to reach an agreement with their starting quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, the Jets best defender will be in green and white for the foreseeable future.

Defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson agreed to a five-year, $85 million contract with $37 million in guarantees, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rappaort, as New York announced the contract via Twitter at 4:33 p.m. Friday afternoon, just 33 minutes after the deadline for long-term contracts had elapsed.

Jets Lock Up Mo Wilkerson On 5-Year Deal At Deadline

Wilkerson expressed his gratitude in a separate post on the club’s Twitter page.

“I’m excited to be back with this great organization for another five years and looking forward to great things,” Wilkerson said in a six-second video clip. “Go Jets.”

The signing means, almost for certain, that Ryan Fitzpatrick will be forced to except less money or be forced out.

Fitzpatrick balked at a recent offer from the Jets, reportedly due to the lack of guaranteed money. The offer was three years at $24 million in total.

New York slapped the franchise tag on Wilkerson March 1, setting him up for a one-year deal at over $15.7 million. Now he will earn $17 million per season.

As was expected, Jets fans are pumped, but so are some of the other members of the green and white flight crew.

Wilkerson expanded on his excitement and gratitude for the contract on new social media site TwitLonger.

“I give my all every Sunday on the field and play with so much love and passion for the game. I’m thankful for everything that comes my way and proud to say I’m back on the green and white for a few more years #96#MKG #jetlife

Ryan Fitzpatrick May Be Back with Jets

Here we are in early June, and Ryan Fitzpatrick is a free agent and has not agreed to terms with his 2015 team, the New York Jets.

Jets, Fitzpatrick, Still Far Apart In Contract Talks

On January 22, Jets’ GM  Mike Maccagnan said, “Hopefully, we’ll be able to get something done here in the near future.”  Obviously, that has not been the case over four months later and there has been little conversation between Fitzpatrick and Gang Green.

According to ESPN, the Jets have offered Fitzpatrick a 3 year/$24 million deal, with $12 million coming in the first year and $6 million each of the final two years.  By signing Fitzpatrick to a multiyear deal, the Jets are providing some insurance for themselves at a low price.

Fitzpatrick on the other hand, is coming off the best year of his career at 33.  He has countered by saying he will accept a one year deal worth $12 million.  After missing out on a lucrative deal this offseason, Fitzpatrick is betting on himself and willing to take a chance in next year’s free agency period.

Fitzpatrick threw 31 touchdowns and 3,905 yards last season, but the Jets finished 10-6 and seventh in the AFC standings, losing a tiebreaker to Pittsburgh and missing the playoffs.  Fitzpatrick has never led a team to the playoffs, nor does he have age on his side, he is not worth $12 million for one season.

The Jets may eventually cave and give Fitzpatrick what he wants.  They do not have a proven reliable signal caller on their roster.  Their quarterbacks include Geno SmithBryce Petty, and Christian Hackenberg.  All young and unproven under center.

Throwing in a potential liability at quarterback could be catastrophic for this team’s playoff hopes.  Do you really think Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, and Darrelle Revis want to spend a year of their primes with a rookie, second year, or unproven quarterback taking snaps?  Even with Tom Brady getting suspended for the Patriots’ first 4 games, there is no real threat from the Jets without Fitzpatrick.

However, I think Fitzpatrick needs the Jets more than they need him.  If Fitz doesn’t sign, the Jets save money ad can focus on getting their young guns in the offense and getting some reps in.  Average quarterbacks like Fitzpatrick are getting paid more and more each year, the Jets could benefit in the long run by letting Fitzpatrick walk.

Fitzpatrick needs to prove he can still play the position if he doesn’t come to terms with the Jets, and also how can he face a decision of $24 million or nothing, and take nothing?  In a few weeks or so Fitzpatrick will realize that he probably won’t get a better off than this the rest of his career and decide to come into training camp with his tail tucked between his legs, like most players who decide to holdout for more money.

Although the Denver Broncos have already had discussions with free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick’s representatives, they refuse to pay the salary Fitzpatrick is seeking, according to an ESPN report. The report also stated that the Broncos could potentially revisit Fitzpatrick further down the line.

The New York Jets, Fitzpatrick’s former team, and the QB are engaged in a standoff in their negotiations. Fitzpatrick is looking for a contract that will pay him a salary similar to what other starting quarterbacks are getting — in the $16 million- to $18 million-per-year range. However, The Jets do not want to pay that for a veteran who has already played for several teams in the league, each one for very little time. According to sources, their offer is around $7 million per year.

Sources have also stated that the Jets are not overly concerned with their quarterback situation, regardless of what Fitzpatrick decides to do. The Jets remain confident that they can attain a winning season next year thanks to a solid defense and a strong running game, which they bolstered last week by signing Matt Forte.

These two aspects of the Jets’ team worked for several years under coach Rex Ryan, particularly in 2009 and 2010, when the team twice made the AFC Championship game, but this tactic quickly fell apart. The New York team has not been in the playoffs since 2010, and previous quarterbacks Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith and Michael Vick have all failed in recent years.

Last year, however, things seemed to change for the Jets. After replacing Geno Smith as starter, following Smith’s broken jaw, Fitzpatrick played a fantastic season with the Jets in 2015. He threw for a team-record 31 touchdowns and nearly 4,000 yards. The Jets’ offense gained the most yards of any offense in team history.

However, Fitzpatrick’s game weakened in the last game of the season, during which he threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter against the Buffalo Bills, thus keeping the Jets out of the playoffs.

It seems as if Fitzpatrick will have nowhere else to turn besides his old team should the Broncos no longer be interested in him.The Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams are also in need of a starting quarterback, but none of these teams has expressed any interest in Fitzpatrick, who is considered to be the top free-agent quarterback left.

Former Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III is also left. Although the Jets met with Griffin on Friday and Saturday, he left without a deal. The only quarterbacks currently on the Jets’ roster are Smith, who started in 2013 and 2014, and Bryce Petty, the team’s fourth-round pick from last year.

While the market has calmed down, there still has been plenty of interesting signings over the last few hours. Probably the most expected has to be the official announcement of Andre Johnson going to the Indianapolis Colts, which the receiver unveiled on Instagram.

As announced yesterday, Johnson was traveling with his former college teammate Frank Gore to Indianapolis and it was believed that the seven-time pro bowler would sign a deal with the AFC South team.

And with this acquisition, the Indianapolis Colts just got infinitely scarier on offense. Though they need to address some issues on defense, replacing Reggie Wayne with Johnson was a huge improvement: especially since Andre is three years younger and has fresher legs. His contract is supposedly for 3 years and worth $21 million, according to Josina Anderson

On top of this, the Philadelphia Eagles have continued their shopping spree, signing a few key players today. First, the Eagles addressed their running back problem with Ryan Matthews. The deal is currently just waiting to be signed.  But does this really fix their problem? They offered him 3 years and $11.5 million — with $5 million guaranteed — yet Matthews had a significant injury problem in San Diego.

Despite rushing for over 4,000 yards with 23 touchdowns and 4.4 YPA, he has only played in one full season in his entire five year career — missing eighteen games in total. On top of this, while splitting time with Darren Sproles would be ideal, he is not the power back that Chip Kelly wants, making it understandable that the Eagles are still going after DeMarco Murray.

Also, the Eagles offered a big contract to former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Byron Maxwell — six years worth $63 million with $25 million guaranteed — and a one-year deal to the former Giants and Seahawks corner Walter Thurmond: Thurmond is now the tenth former Oregon Ducks member to be traded for or signed by Chip.  This would reunite the two defensive backs, who were a part of the “legion of boom” during Seattle’s Super Bowl run.

As for some of the smaller deals, the New York Jets have finally addressed their quarterback situation. They have given the Houston Texans a conditional seventh round pick for Ryan Fitzpatrick, who will instantly compete with Geno Smith for the starting job.

While Fitzpatrick had an up-and-down season in 2014 — which ended with a broken leg — he had some strong outings, including his six touchdown showing against the Tennessee Titans. In twelve starts, he had a completion percentage of 63.1, 2,483 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Also, the Minnesota Vikings signed the former Rams QB Shaun Hill, Raiders signed Dan Williams and Curtis Lofton and the Bengals reached a five-year $26 million deal with offensive lineman Clint Boling.
