A troubling revelation from Clemson emerged Thursday morning: the team’s former running back and 2016 national champion CJ Fuller has died. Officials from the 22-year-old’s high school confirmed his passing to News and Observer.

CJ Fuller, Ex Clemson Running Back, Dies At 22

Although details are not available on Fuller’s cause of death, Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley told the Greenville News that Fuller died at Greenville Memorial Hospital. TMZ reported it believed the former running back died of a seizure. Although she declined to articulate the specifics of his death until an autopsy was run, she mentioned that he was transported to the hospital from the home of a family member before passing.

Coach Dabo Swinney issued a statement on the former Tiger through the school. “I’ve known C.J. a long time and watched him grow up,” he said. “I’m proud of what he accomplished.”

Fuller was on a promising track as a college graduate. He had been scheduled to graduate from Clemson in May, and was planning to transfer to another school for his final year of eligibility. From 2015-2017, Fuller was the Tigers’ running back and returned three kicks in the national championship game win for Clemson. Racking up 599 rushing yards and 155 receiving yards, he totaled six touchdowns in his three years with the Tigers.

“Somebody wake me up from this nightmare,” former teammate Shaq Lawson lamented on social media. “My brother was supposed to come see me tomorrow. I love you bruh until we meet again.”

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson Injures Knee in 17-14 Win vs Packers

The Washington Redskins are seeking to strengthen their rushing game this season, and thus met with several top running backs in free agency this week including veteran Adrian Peterson.

Redskins Meet With Free Agent Adrian Peterson

Peterson, 33, visited the team on Monday. The seven-time Pro Bowler — a three-time NFL rushing yards leader who was also the Offensive Player of the Year in 2012 and a league MVP — was released by the Arizona Cardinals in March. Peterson spent his first 10 NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, who drafted him as the seventh overall pick out of Oklahoma in 2007. Peterson suffered a neck injury late last season.

“I fly in tonight. I’m down for working out or whatever I have to do to make the team,” Peterson told ESPN.

On Sunday, Washington hosted running back Jamaal Charles, who played with the Denver Broncos last year after spending his first nine seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Redskins also met with former New York Giant Orleans Darkwawho worked out with Washington.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden told ESPN that his squad isn’t seeking a starting running back, as Rob Kelley is set to keep that position.

“We want to get physicals on them just in case,” Gruden said of Peterson, Charles and Darkwa. “We’ve had very unlucky situations with our running backs. If something else happens, we’ll be really, really, really thin. We want to make sure we’re covering all our bases right now, and we’ll address it when we feel like we have to.”

Gruden is right about Washington’s running backs situation. The team lost rookie Derrius Guice — a second-round pick out of LSU — to a season-ending knee injury in its first preseason game, and a pair of backups — Byron Marshall and Samaje Perine — recently injured their ankles.

Charles, 31, was the NFL’s rushing touchdowns leader in 2013 and is a four-time Pro-Bowler. He also averages a league record 5.4 yards per carry. He has logged 44 rushing touchdowns and 20 receiving scores in his career.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Darkwa, 26, has played the last four seasons with the Giants. He led New York with 751 rushing yards in 2017, 154 of which came in the team’s regular-season finale, a victory over the Redskins. Darkwa — who is now completely healthy after undergoing leg surgery in May — has scored nine rushing touchdowns in his four-year pro career. Thus, it seems like he would be the weakest asset for Washington, while Peterson — one of the top NFL pass rushers of his generation —  would likely be the strongest.

Max Kellerman of ESPN’s First Take said Monday he was convinced Peterson would not be able to deliver a productive seasons for the Redskins should the team choose him. Kellerman cited the running back’s old age as one of his main reasons.

“Is [Peterson] going to give you production or replacement value? I don’t even know if he is replacement value at this point. Why not go with a young running back you may have around for four or five years?” said Kellerman. “Develop something. Why give those carries to a guy who can’t get average yards per carry?” he added of Peterson.

After becoming the first team in NFL history to jump from the worst offense in the league to the best in just one season, the Los Angeles Rams have had a busy offseason, bringing in a host of new players including wide receiver Brandin Cooks, cornerback Marcus Peters, and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in order to make themselves serious Super Bowl contenders in 2018. Now it appears they’re looking even farther into their future, as they are close to finalizing a contract extension with running back Todd Gurley.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is $60 million over four years with $45 million guaranteed. Gurley was also given a signing bonus worth $20 million. With two years left on his current contract, the extension guarantees that Gurley will be with the Rams until 2023.

SLIDESHOW: 30 BEST SPORTS INSTAGRAMS

Gurley’s contract extension extends farther than himself and the Rams, though, as it could set a new precedent for deals given to star running backs, especially when the likes of David Johnson and Ezekiel Elliott finish out their rookie contracts. However, the most pertinent NFL player on the periphery of this deal is Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell, who continues to express frustration with his current contract with Pittsburgh, a sentiment which he has echoed over the past couple of seasons. He wants a long term deal and a ton of money to go along with it, much like the one Gurley was just given by the Rams.

Bell took to Twitter to congratulate Gurley on his new deal, while also saying that his demands are not entirely farfetched.

NFL teams are typically hesitant to sign running backs to long term deals such as the ones they give to quarterbacks, as running backs take perhaps the most hits of anyone else on the field, and are thus heavily prone to both injury and fluctuating production.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

However, it looks as though Gurley will be worth every penny. He won NFL Rookie of the Year honors in 2015, and after a poor sophomore season (which one can attribute to just being in a terrible situation with both coaching and personnel), he had an MVP-caliber 2017-18 campaign in which he rushed for 1,305 yards and 13 touchdowns on 279 rushes (4.7 yards per carry). He also added 788 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns through the air on 64 catches.

Gurley is as valuable as any non-quarterback offensive player in the NFL and should continue to thrive under coach Sean McVay’s hyper-explosive offensive scheme. It will be very, very interesting to see how this influences running back contracts in the future.

LeSean McCoy will be reporting to the Buffalo Bills’ training camp on Wednesday, his first appearance with the team since he was accused of beating Delicia Cordon and their dog via a post by Cordon’s friend on social media. McCoy has since denied all accusations, although Cordon recently said that she believes the home invasion and assault to be a “set up” instigated by McCoy.

Police are continuing on with the investigation into the home invasion but have yet to name a suspect.

SLIDESHOW: 30 BEST SPORTS INSTAGRAMS

While McCoy is no longer being accused of having assaulted Cordon himself, she claims that he still had something to do with her Atlanta home being robbed. During her July 10 911 call, Cordon said, “I really feel like, because we’re breaking up, that he wants all his jewelry back…[The intruder] just kept asking for jewelry. I think it has something to do with my ex-boyfriend.”

With his status with the NFL unchanged and an absence of legal repercussions, McCoy has been cleared to attend Bills training camp. The 30-year-old running back was an instrumental part in Buffalo’s 2017-18 postseason appearance, which ended the NFL’s longest current playoff drought up until that point. The team is currently entering rebuild mode, though, as they have traded away quarterback Tyrod Taylor and are projected to have career backup AJ McCarron as their Week 1 starter.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

The big story for Buffalo’s 2018 season, though, is the development of the seventh overall pick in the 2018 draft, quarterback Josh Allen. McCoy’s ability to return to Bills camp will be largely beneficial to Allen’s progression into a franchise quarterback, as he’s both a Pro-Bowler and a longtime veteran of the NFL, the perfect candidate to help out a raw young QB.

The Arizona Cardinals no longer have to worry about their star running back’s desire to play, as David Johnson has agreed to end his contract holdout and join his team in training camp. Johnson publicly confirmed his return to the team himself, tweeting out a video of him wearing a Cardinals helmet with the hashtag #ImBack.

Johnson missed a minicamp in June as well as a pair of team activity practices as he held out for a contract extension with the Cardinals, saying, “The Cardinals want me to play for them for a long time, and I want to be here for a long time.”

SLIDESHOW: 30 BEST SPORTS INSTAGRAMS

Johnson’s holdout has been relatively understandable, as is heading into the final year of his rookie contract in which he will earn just over $1.9 million, a huge bargain for a player of his caliber. However, he decided to end the holdout after conferring with his representatives. He said, “I’m here to play football. I trust my agency, Sportstars, and I know they’ll get it done when the time comes.”

The Cardinals were without Johnson for almost all of the 2017 season after he suffered a fractured wrist during a Week 1 matchup against the Detroit Lions. After exploding onto the season during the latter half of his rookie season in 2015, Johnson spent 2016 proving himself to be one of the NFL’s elite running backs, rushing for 1,239 yards and 16 touchdowns on 293 carries (4.2 yards per carry), while also adding 879 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns through the air.

Arizona is entering what should be an interesting season, as they drafted quarterback Josh Rosen out of UCLA with the 10th pick in the 2018 draft. Rosen is considered by many experts to be the most NFL-ready rookie quarterback, and his progression into a franchise QB would certainly benefit from Johnson being in the backfield alongside him.

The Seattle Seahawks selected San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny as the No. 27 pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft on Thursday night after trading down, and fans on Twitter were left shocked.

The Seahawks had announced earlier in the night that they had sent the No. 18 (cornerback Jaire Alexander of Louisville) and No. 248 picks to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for the 27th, 76th and 186th picks.

Penny was the leading rusher in the country for the 2017 NCAA season, and received All-American honors.

Seattle has been desperate to add a rusher to its roster, as the team has suffered multiple injuries to the position and seen very tepid performances from its running backs. Quarterback Russell Wilson led the Seahawks in rushing in 2017.

According to ESPN, several other top college running backs like Georgia’s Sony Michel and Nick Chubb — as well as LSU’s Derrius Guice — were widely predicted to be chosen before Penny. Thus, fans were understandably surprised by Seattle’s first selection in the draft:

Penny logged 2,248 rushing yards, 135 receiving yards, 23 ground touchdowns and two touchdown catches last season, per ESPN stats. He gained a notable ability to set up blocks.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart's Facemask Falls Off in Win vs Redskins

The Carolina Panthers released veteran running back Jonathan Stewart on Wednesday, and head coach Ron Rivera said people shouldn’t assume the obvious with regards to Stewart’s replacement.

Jonathan Stewart Panthers replacement news

Rivera made it clear Thursday at the NFL scouting combine that the decision to cut Stewart — Carolina’s all-time leading rusher after ten years with the team — was a difficult one for him. The Panthers saved around $3.7 million in salary cap space with the move.

Stewart, who will be 31 on March 21, was coming off one of his worst seasons statistically on an offensive line general manager Marty Hurney considered one of the top five in the league. Stewart averaged a career-low 3.4 yards per carry (680 yards on 198 carries), and his total yards were his fewest since 2013, when he was limited by injuries.

The only other two running backs who had lower averaged yards per carry this season despite racking up 150 carries or more were Adrian Peterson and Ameer Abdullah, per ESPN Stats & Information.

People may expect the Panthers to find a running back who is known for power runs, as this was Stewart’s style, but Rivera said this may not necessarily be exactly what his team is seeking now. The coach said he’d like to find a pass rusher with a dynamic skill set to work in tandem with pass-catching back Christian McCaffrey.

Among the other positions Carolina is urgently seeking are receiver, edge rusher, guard and safety.

The NFL scouting combine began Tuesday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indiana, and will end on Monday (March 5).

Stewart finishes his ten-year career in Carolina with 7,318 yards.

Jamaal Charles has spoken out after signing a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos on Tuesday about getting cut by the Kansas City Chiefs, and the running back says the move was both “business” and “personal.”

Broncos RB Jamaal Charles On Being Cut by Chiefs

“Really, it’s behind me,” the running back said. “I really don’t even talk about it. I love the organization, love the team. At the end of the day it’s a business, but it’s kind of personal as well. It is what it is.”

Charles inked a $3.75 million contract with the Broncos on Tuesday, a deal that includes a $900,000 base salary, according to Mike Klis of 9news.com.

The Chiefs saved around $6 million in salary-cap space by releasing the 30-year-old rusher, who has played in Kansas City since being drafted as a third-round pick out of Texas in 2008. Charles says he is a big fan of John Elway and has long wanted to play for his team.

“I always wanted to play with Denver,” Charles said via the team’s official site. “Growing up, John Elway was my favorite player. I just like the environment, the team and the organization. I wanted to be a part of it. I still feel like I can still play ball. I can keep up with the young people.”

Apparently, the Broncos general manager is just as happy that Charles is joining his team:

Charles suffered a right ACL tear in 2015 and was sidelined for the rest of that season after just 12 carries in three games. Nevertheless, he still boasts the highest yards-per-carry average in NFL history.

Now, Charles says his next big objective is to win a Super Bowl. He recently posted a video displaying his agility work in hopes of easing concerns about his physical health.

“It’s not about money,” Charles said. “It’s not what you see, it’s what you don’t see. A lot of people see me [being done]. I see me going out there, helping the team win and helping the team get to the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl. That’s what I see. I see things that are just in my fate.”

Charles will seek to help improve Denver’s backfield alongside fellow running backs C.J. Anderson and Devontae Booker.

LeGarrette Blount, Giants Share Mutual Interest

The former New England Patriots running back became a free agent in early March and has stayed on the market since.

Blount’s potential deal would follow that of another veteran running back, Adrian Peterson, who inked a two-year contract with the New Orleans Saints early Tuesday after spending ten seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.

We have yet to see if a deal with Blount — who also spent one season with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2014) and his first three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2010-2012) — materializes before the draft begins Thursday.

Blount, 30, spent three seasons with the Patriots, and recorded 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns last season for the Super Bowl LI champions.

The Giants are in desperate need of a strong rusher after possessing one of the least efficient running games in the NFL last season. Blount would be paired up with running backs like Shane Vereen and Paul Perkins.

Blount’s return to New England was shut down after the Patriots added Rex Burkhead and Mike Gillislee in free agency.

The former Patriots star was arrested for possession of marijuana along with another running back, the Steelers’ Le’Veon Bell, in July.

In other football news, Cleveland police are investigating Ohio State cornerback Gareon Conley for rape following an accusation from a woman earlier this month.

Conley is considered a top defensive prospect for this weeks NFL draft. He has not yet been interviewed by police, or charged or arrested. The alleged incident Conley was involved in reportedly happened in the early morning hours of April 9 at a hotel in downtown Cleveland.

Adrian Peterson signed a two-year deal with the New Orleans Saints early Tuesday, and the team’s players didn’t take long to react to the news on Twitter.

Saints Stars React to Adrian Peterson’s Two-Year, $7M Deal

The former Minnesota Vikings running back’s new contract is worth $7 million, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, and includes $3.5 million guaranteed in 2017, as well as a one-year option and a maximum of $8.25 million in incentives.

Rapoport added that New Orleans was the only team to formally offer Peterson, 32, a deal this offseason. The running back first visited the city two weeks ago as a free agent and the Saints took a continual interest in him.

“I am excited to be joining the New Orleans Saints,” Peterson told ESPN’s Josina Anderson. “I’m really looking forward to this opportunity. Most importantly, I chose this team because it just felt right within my spirit. Additionally, my wife and family added their confirmation with the same feelings.

“On offense, it goes without saying that the Saints are really solid behind Drew Brees. I feel like my skill set can make them even more dominant as a unit. They have a great offensive line, which is something that stood out to me as well. I could tell from talking to head coach Sean Payton over the last two weeks that he did his due diligence in evaluating how I could contribute. I also did a lot of homework on the defense as well. While I know that injuries have played a role in performance, I also see areas of potential with a lot of younger guys having the ability to step up. Lastly, it goes without saying that the Saints have an amazing fan base and I look forward to making them proud and creating everlasting memories.”

Three Saints players took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to express similar excitement over Peterson’s move to New Orleans: safety Kenny Vaccaro, quarterback Chase Daniel, and linebacker Nathan Stupar.

Peterson will hope to add depth to the Saints’ rushing game alongside starting running back Mark Ingram, a 27-year-old former first-round pick with two years remaining on his contract.

Ingram is coming off the best season of his career, 1,043 yards on 205 carries for a 5.1-yard per tote average with six touchdowns for New Orleans. He also added 46 catches for 319 yards and four receiving touchdowns.

The Saints lost veteran backup running back Tim Hightower to free agency. Hightower signed with the San Francisco 49ers last week.

Peterson, who spent his first ten NFL seasons with the Vikings, played only three games last season due to a torn meniscus suffered on Sept. 18. He returned in less than three months from that injury to play against the Indianapolis Colts on Dec. 18. However, he sat out Minnesota’s final two games because of an adductor strain he sustained in his first game back. He finished the season with 72 yards on 37 carries.

The running back, whose career rushing yards rank second to Frank Gore among active players, led the NFL in rushing yards in 2015 with 1,485. Peterson recovered from ACL surgery on his left knee to rush for 2,097 yards in 2012 and win the MVP. He has said he hopes to play football until his late 30s.

Ex-Texas RB Ricky Williams Stopped and Frisked by Texas Police

The Tyler, Texas Police Department has confirmed the occurrence of an incident in which they searched former Texas running back and Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams in the parking lot of his hotel after he went for a walk in the city on Jan. 11 before an awards ceremony.

Texas Police Confirm Frisk/Search Incident With Heisman Winner Ricky Williams

Williams, 39, traveled to Tyler to support two other former UT running backs, the awards’ namesake, Earl Campbell, and the eventual winner of the award, D’Onta Foreman.

The 1998 Heisman winner was staying at a Courtyard Marriott on the south side of the city and decided to go for a walk to kill some time before the ceremony, which was held at the Willow Brook Country Club.

“I realized at the moment I’m a black man walking in the south and there’s a dog barking,” Williams told Austin radio station KLBJ on Wednesday.

” … I started to realize there’s something going on here. So I say ‘OK, I’m not going to walk over here because it doesn’t feel comfortable’ and I turn and I just take a walk around the neighborhood.”

Williams said when he returned to his hotel about an hour later, four white police officers were there to question him after someone called saying they saw “a black male wearing all black crouched down behind his wire fence in a green belt area that backed up” to the hotel, according to a statement from Tyler police.

The man who made the initial call said Williams “didn’t threaten me in any way.”

Williams said the officers made him put his hands behind his back– though he wasn’t handcuffed– and then forced him to empty his pockets (including his room key) and spread his legs so one of the officers could frisk him and then question him.

Tyler Police released the dash cam video of the incident, in which one of the cops is heard asking Williams if he hopped a fence, to which the former football star said he didn’t.

“I usually don’t consider where I am because I’m ‘Ricky Williams,” and I think that’s good enough,” Williams told the radio hosts. ” And I started to get a little bit upset and they said, ‘Calm down,’ and I said, ‘Listen, you don’t know what it’s like to be a black man, this is not the first time this has happened to me when cops have harassed me and I haven’t done anything.'”

Williams claims one of the officers told him, “If you’re staying in the hotel, it makes sense why you were walking here. But, if you came from North Tyler, it doesn’t make sense.”
Williams said he told officials, “I don’t even know where North Tyler is.”

The Heisman winner also said one of the officers thought he was Ricky Williams, although he wasn’t sure. When Williams confirmed this, he proceeded to drop Earl Campbell’s name, but said the other policemen thought he was lying.

“Honestly, to their defense (the officers), and I don’t know why I’m defending them, they’re not used to seeing people and they get a call, they have to follow up,” Williams said. “And I hope that after this situation, they realize that black lives do matter. I’ve never wanted to say that, but this was a time where it fits. It fits in Tyler in that moment.”

Williams noted in the radio interview that he was told by an attorney friend that he was illegally searched. Williams said the interaction with police lasted around seven minutes.

Williams was drafted fifth overall by the New Orleans Saints out of Texas in 1999. There, he spent three seasons before being traded to the Miami Dolphins, with whom he played nine seasons. Following his suspension from the NFL in 2006, he briefly played with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. He then played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2011 and retired at the end of that season. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2015.

Steelers To Use Franchise Tag On Le’Veon Bell

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday on NFL GameDay Morning that the team will franchise tag the fourth-year running back.

The tag should be more than $12 million for running backs this season. Franchising Bell– who will be 25 next month, will give both sides an opportunity to settle on a long-term deal.

Several factors could influence such a deal, including off the field concerns (suspensions the past two season) and health (knee injuries in 2014 and 2015).

Rapoport added that as one of the best pass-catching running backs in the NFL, Bell could earn “big-time playmaker money.”

Bell’s statistics are quite impressive. He ranks first in the league in touches per game (28.0) and scrimmage YPG (157.0) and was second in rushing YPG (105.7), despite missing four contests this season (3 to suspension, 1 to rest).

From Weeks 4-16 (when Bell played), he led the NFL in touches (336) and scrimmage yards (1,884) — 28 more touches than David Johnson’s 308 and 189 more scrimmage yards than Ezekiel Elliott’s 1,695 (both 2nd-most in that span).

Rapoport also stated that the Steelers would like to extend Antonio Brown ahead of his final season under contract. Locking down both Bell and Brown in 2017 would help stabilize Pittsburgh’s offensive future as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s tenure with the team nears its end.

Bell rushed for 167 yards in Sunday’s 30-12 victory over the Miami Dolphins, a Steelers postseason record. In his first six games this season, Bell recorded 16.6 carries per game, although that figure improved to an average of 27.1 carries per game in his last seven games.

The New York Giants running back had a blunder in Sunday’s 38-13 road playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers. Late in the third quarter, as the Packers led 21-13, Rainey caught a ball during a kickoff that was clearly going out of bounds.

As the announcer said, “That was a mistake.”

Unsurprisingly, many fans jumped on Twitter to mock and criticize Rainey for not letting the ball go.

Let’s hope the rusher has learned his lesson and doesn’t make another easily-avoidable mistake like that, or he’ll surely have a lot of people to answer to.

Rainey wasn’t the only Giant to do something stupid on Sunday, however. Wideout Odell Beckham Jr. allegedly punched a hole in a wall and banged his head against a door following the loss.

Beckham finished with just four catches for 28 yards on 11 targets. He also dropped two passes, one of which would have been a touchdown in the first quarter. The Giants led 6-0 in the first quarter with two field goals before being pummeled by Green Bay’s offense.

Among the other highlights of the game was a 42-yard touchdown pass Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw to receiver Randall Cobb in the last second of the second quarter to put Green Bay ahead 14-6 at halftime. The Hail Mary was Rodgers’ third in the past two seasons, including playoffs.  Cobb also scored the Packers’ first touchdown.

The Packers will next visit the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday for the divisional round.

Former Atlanta Falcons running back Jamal Anderson is accused of exposing himself to a convenience store clerk in Suwanee, Georgia, early Wednesday.

Ex-Falcons RB Jamal Anderson Accused Of Exposing Himself To Store Clerk

Anderson, now 44, allegedly walked into the store and began handing money over to the clerk but didn’t ask for anything, according to the 911 call obtained by the New York Daily News.

The clerk said the former NFL star then took out his penis and started masturbating after going to the back of the store with his phone “for quite some time.” The caller did not recognize him as the former All-Pro running back, describing him only as a 6-2 black male (Anderson is listed as 5-11) in jeans and a sweater with a flat-brim cap.

Here is the original police report:

“Suwanee PD got a 911 call early Wednesday morning from the clerk at a QuikTrip. The clerk reported a black male had walked into the store early Wednesday morning, slurred something and started handing over money. He started walking around the store. A short while later he walked up to the clerk and took out his penis and started masturbating.”

Since the clerk did not want to press charges, the police issued a ticket for public indecency rather than arresting Anderson.

This is not the first time Anderson has gotten into trouble with the law since he retired from the NFL in 2001. In 2009, he was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine. He’s also been arrested for DUI in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Earlier this year, he served three days in county jail for that 2015 DUI. He was arrested again in August for driving with a suspended license. In 2013 he foreclosed on his Atlanta mansion.

Atlanta selected Anderson in the seventh round of the 1994 NFL Draft. He went on to play in 88 career games, rushing for 5,336 yards and scoring 34 touchdowns.

He was named a first-team All Pro in 1998 when the Falcons went to the Super Bowl.

Former NFL RB Kevin Turner Died of CTE, Not ALS

Former NFL running back Kevin Turner spent the final six years of his life believing he was dying from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Former NFL RB Kevin Turner Died From CTE, Not ALS

In fact, Turner, who died in March at age 46, had really been suffering from a severe case of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a neurodegenerative disease associated with repeated blows to the head and that caused a disease similar to ALS, researchers at Boston University announced Thursday.

“The severity of Mr. Turner’s CTE was extraordinary and unprecedented for an athlete who died in his 40s,” said Dr. Ann McKee of Boston University and the Concussion Legacy Foundation. “While he had typical cognitive symptoms and problems with impulse control associated with CTE, it also appears that CTE decimated the motor cortex of his brain at a young age, likely leading to his ALS symptoms.”
McKee announced this at a press conference attended by Turner’s parents and the families of other ex-NFL players who were diagnosed with CTE following their deaths. She added that former Boston College linebacker Ron Perryman, who died in 2011 at age 42, was also falsely diagnosed with ALS before a postmortem autopsy of his brain confirmed he had developed a motor neuron disease similar to Turner’s due to CTE.
Turner was a star running back at the University of Alabama from 1988 to 1991 before being selected as a third-round draft pick by the New England Patriots. He spent three seasons with the Patriots, and then five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He retired in 1999 and was diagnosed with ALS in 2010.
Turner’s father, Raymond, cited the findings as evidence that the NFL needs to do more to protect its players from brain trauma.
“It’s a big-money thing, I realize that,’’ Raymond Turner said. “But they can make it safer.’’
BU’s CTE Center has diagnosed the disease in 91 deceased football players. According to McKee, 17 of those players who were initially believed to have died of ALS were instead killed by CTE.
In a 2013 interview with CNN affiliate WGCL, Turner explained how he believes playing football played a large role in his AL diagnosis: “I really believe that had I not played all those years, that I wouldn’t have this condition.”
The former running back was a lead plaintiff on the concussion-related lawsuit filed by more than 5,000 former players.
Following his retirement, Turner dedicated his life to research of the health impacts of football and created the Kevin Turner Foundation to raise awareness for ALS.
Professional football players are a whopping four times more likely to have ALS and three times more likely to die from neurodegenerative diseases like ALS or Alzheimer’s.
CTE has Alzheimer’s-like symptoms including dementia, memory loss, mood swings, aggression and depressionScientists are working to find potential biomarkers so the disease can be diagnosed in people while they are still alive.
Some of the most famous names to have suffered from the disease include Hall of Famer and legendary sportscaster Frank Gifford, who died at the age of 84 in summer 2015, as well as San Diego Chargers player and fellow Hall of Famer Junior Seau. Seau was just 43 years old when he took his own life in 2012.
Though the disease is most commonly associated with football players, it has also been diagnosed in hockey players and wrestlers.

Broncos RB C.J. Anderson To Have Knee Surgery, Placed On IR; Season Likely Over

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Denver Broncos running back told people close to him that he’s done for the season. Rapoport added, per a source familiar with the situation, that Anderson will have an arthroscopic procedure on his torn meniscus on Thursday, and will be placed on injured reserve.

The running back initially denied the report, writing “false” on Twitter, but deleted the posts afterwards.

Anderson suffered the injury early in Monday night’s home victory over the Houston Texans.

The initial diagnosis was a bone bruise in his right knee that would have cost him at least a few weeks. That diagnosis worsened following a second opinion.

Anderson was coming off the strongest performance of his season: 107 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. The 6.7 yards per tote average was more than two yards better than his season average.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Broncos in 2013, will now be replaced by rookie Devontae Booker. Booker saw his role significantly increase in Week 7, carrying the ball 17 times. Third-year pro Kapri Bibbs will play a support role with fullback Andy Janovich possibly seeing increased snaps.

The Broncos (5-2), who recently got their head coach Gary Kubiak back after he suffered a health scare, will next host the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.

Arian Foster, a four-time Pro Bowler who was among the NFL’s top running backs in 2014, became the latest player to leave the sport of football due to injuries, abruptly announcing his retirement late Monday after playing in only four games this season.

Dolphins’ Arian Foster Announces Immediate NFL Retirement After Several Injuries

In a statement released on Monday by the website Uninterrupted, Foster, 30, who joined the Miami Dolphins this season, said he was retiring immediately.

“There comes a time in every athlete’s career when their ambition and their body are no longer on the same page,” Foster —  who started for the Dolphins in Week 1— said in the statement. “I’ve reached that point.”

Foster was worn out by a long line of soft-tissue injuries early in the Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots. He will end his short-lived Miami career with 55 rushing yards on 22 attempts.

Foster, an undrafted rookie signed by the Houston Texans in 2009, became the league’s top rusher in the 2010 season with 1,616 yards. He was released by the Texans in March, having missed 12 games last season due to injuries. He joined the Dolphins on a one-year contract but played in only four games this season because of injuries.

“This game has been everything to me … my therapy, my joy, my solace and my enemy,” Foster wrote via Uninterrupted.com. “I’ve learned to love every facet of this game, from the peak of accomplishment to the gutter of criticism. And it all makes the ride worthwhile. I’ve been fortunate enough to play many successful years in this league. I’ve given a lot to this game and given up a lot for it. But it has returned to me more than I could have ever asked for.

“Faceless gladiators have been shuffled in and out of this arena for decades and I’m proud to have taken part in that legacy. My father always said, ‘You’ll know when it’s time to walk away.’ It has never been more clear than right now. I’m walking away with peace. I know it’s not commonplace to do it midseason, but my body just can’t take the punishment this game asks for any longer. … Every athlete would love to go out as a Super Bowl MVP, riding off into the sunset with the crowd cheering their name. Unfortunately, life has other plans and they’re usually opposite the imagination. But that imagination got me this far and I could not be prouder of the things my teammates and I accomplished in this game.”

Foster then thanked the Dolphins organization for allowing him to “bow out with grace.”

The rusher referred to football as a “beautifully violent game,” that left him with a “bittersweet taste.”

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Foster is retiring now because the eight-year veteran’s heart couldn’t handle another rehab, even for a minor injury.

During the off-season, Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson announced his retirement at age 30 after nine great seasons in the NFL. In September, 26-year-old San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Anthony Davis retired for a second time, having sustained multiple concussions. That announcement came merely 15 months after Davis retired for the first time.

Davis attempted a comeback this year, but another concussion convinced him to leave the game for good.

NFL players have recently been retiring at younger ages as they ponder the long-term consequences of playing while injured. According to Business Insider, 19 players retired from the NFL at age 30 or younger in 2015. Only five such players did so in 2011.

Jake Locker, Marshawn Lynch, Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis and Jason Worilds are among those who have recently retired while in their prime.

In 2015, linebacker Chris Borland retired after just one season with the 49ers because, although he was not injured, he was afraid of the potential trauma to his brain from repeated blows to the head.

The Green Bay Packers have boosted their running game.

Chiefs Trade RB Knile Davis To Packers

The team acquired reserve running back Knile Davis from the Kansas City Chiefs, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday, according to a source informed of the trade.

In exchange, the Chiefs will receive a conditional late-round pick, probably based on playing time, Rapoport added.

The Kansas City Star first reported the news. Coach Mike McCarthy later confirmed the trade, adding the Packers were attempting to get him ready for practice Tuesday.

Green Bay has desperately been seeking backfield help. Starting rusher Eddie Lacy is dealing with a persistent ankle injury, and McCarthy said Lacy is “very sore” and won’t be practicing Tuesday. James Starks is out four weeks after undergoing knee surgery on Monday.

Lacy was the only healthy back to suit up in Sunday’s 30-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. With the starter battling the ankle trouble, receiver Ty Montgomery served as a backup out of the backfield much of the second half.

Davis has been available for trade as far back as March. Rapoport reported at the time Davis made the request to be traded– Davis later denied that request was made. With Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West proving more than capable of filling in and Jamaal Charles returning from his ACL tear, Davis was always the odd man out.

Then rookie Tyreek Hill stole Davis’ return gig this season. Davis’ roster spot appeared to be in jeopardy the past few weeks.

Heading into Thursday night’s division showdown against the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field, Green Bay fans shouldn’t expect much from Davis, who has averaged merely 3.3 yards per carry for his career. He has open field speed, but isn’t shifty in tight spaces and struggles severely in the passing game.

Davis can also help on special teams.

The Packers are currently 3-2 and second in NFC North.

The Seattle Seahawks bolstered their running back depth on Wednesday, signing former first-round pick C.J. Spiller.

The 29-year-old free agent will replace Terrence Magee, who was waived to make room on the 53-man roster. Coach Pete Carroll later confirmed the move on a conference call with Jets reporters.

Spiller, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2010 draft, spent his first five seasons in Buffalo, then played for New Orleans in 2015 and was released by the Saints earlier this month. He earned Pro Bowl honors in 2012 when he rushed for 1,244 yards and six touchdowns, and caught 43 passes for 459 yards and two scores. Spiller also has two career kick return touchdowns.

Spiller signed a four-year, $18 million contract with the Saints before last season, and before signing with the Seahawks, he also met with the Jets and the Redskins.

The Seahawks’ signing seems logical given the team’s heavily-injured backfield. Second-year running back Thomas Rawls is battling a fibula injury while rookie C.J. Prosise, though back at practice, is expected to wear a cast on his injured hand for another three weeks.

Spiller gained just 112 yards last season with the Saints. In his career, he has rushed for 3,433 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging 4.9 yards per carry. He has also caught 192 passes for 1,434 yards and eight touchdowns.

Magee signed to Seattle’s practice squad last week, then was promoted to the active roster on Saturday. He carried three times for 12 yards in Seattle’s home win over the San Francisco 49ers.

The Seahawks (2-1) will next visit the Jets on Sunday.
