England reached the 2018 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday by defeating Colombia 4-3 in penalty kicks following a 1-1 tie in Moscow, Russia.

This marks the first time England have ever won a penalty shootout in the World Cup. The Three Lions had been knocked out of the 1990, 1998 and 2006 tournaments on penalties. England will next face Sweden, who defeated Switzerland 1-0 in regulation, on Saturday.

Tuesday’s second game was a notably tense one, filled with great animosity between the two teams and even with regard to the officials, particularly American referee Mark Geiger. Colombia was again missing star Bayern Munich midfielder James Rodriguez, who continues to recover from a leg injury.

After a scoreless first half, England’s captain Harry Kane put the team up 1-0 with a penalty in the 57th minute following a call that was argued and reviewed for around three minutes. Carlos Sanchez had taken down Kane in the box. England didn’t escape this moment without any punishment, however, as Jordan Henderson received a yellow card for head-butting Colombia’s Yerry Mina.

Tempers flared for much of the second half, and England seemed to be just moments away from advancing to the next round before Mina tied it 1-1 in the 93rd minute with a header off a corner kick. Spartak Stadium, which had mostly Colombian fans in the stands, roared as the Latin Americans reveled in keeping their hopes alive for just a little while longer.

England finally secured their victory after Colombia’s Mateus Uribe and Carlos Bacca missed their team’s last two penalty shots. Henderson was the only member of the Three Lions squad to miss a penalty, the team’s third, but Eric Dier fired the last kick past goalkeeper David Ospina to make the win official.

First-round group play in the 2018 FIFA World Cup is finally over, and the second round will start on Saturday in Russia.

FIFA World Cup Round Of 16 weekend Preview

Germany’s fans are still in shock from the defending champions being eliminated by South Korea on Wednesday, the first time ever in the national team’s history. Of the 32 teams that qualified for the World Cup, 16 are still in.

This weekend, four games will be played: two on Saturday and two on Sunday. All games will air on Fox Sports and Telemundo (English and Spanish broadcasts, respectively).

First on Saturday, Argentina and France will face off at 10am EST. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, barely made it to the round of 16 after finishing second in its group with four points. (Croatia led that group with nine points). France finished at the top of its group with seven points, but also struggled in its first three games. The French, who won the 1998 World Cup, tied Denmark 0-0 in their last game, while Argentina — who lost to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final — beat Nigeria 2-1.

At 2pm EST, Uruguay and Portugal will play each other. Led by superstars like Luis Suarez, Uruguay won all three of its group-stage games to reach the round 16, and could pose a severe threat to Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal, which only defeated Morocco in the first round.

On Sunday at 10am, Spain and Russia will face off. Spain’s offense has not been as strong as in other tournaments, but the 2010 World Cup champions are still highly projected to defeat Russia in this round, despite the latter country’s home advantage.

At 2pm, Denmark and Croatia will play. Croatia’s Luka Modric has been particularly impressive, and the team that thrashed Argentina 3-0 in the opening round will surly do fine against the Danes.

The other eight countries who will compete in the round of 16 are Brazil, Mexico, Belgium, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, England and Colombia. Those national teams will next play on Monday or Tuesday.

Manchester United defeated Russian club Rostov 1-0 on Thursday thanks to a second-half goal from Juan Mata that propelled the Red Devils into the Europa League quarterfinals with a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Mata scored from close range in the 70th minute on his first shot of the game by firing the ball in from Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s back-heel flick pass. Rostov nearly tied the game to send it into extra time, but United goalie Sergio Romero made two great late saves.

Romero first blocked Sardar Azmoun’s flicked header before knocking away Christian Noboa’s free-kick.

United struggled to get the win. They dominated for large stretches but didn’t deliver many scoring chances, and lost midfielder Paul Pogba to a hamstring injury early in the second half. Defender Daley Blind also went off midway through the second half with suspected concussion.

Their best opportunities before the goal came in the first half, when Henrikh Mkhitaryan shot wide when one-on-one with Rostov’s goalie, and then when Ibrahimovic hit the post twice.

United next visit Middlesbrough for a Premier League game on Sunday, and then host West Brom in another Premier League matchup on April 1. Pogba will miss Sunday’s game.

The Red Devils will next face Belgian leaders Anderlecht in the Europa League quarter-finals. United have not lost any of their six previous games against Anderlecht. The Europa League is the only major trophy Jose Mourinho’s team has not won thus far.

United is currently sixth in the Premier League standings.

For the other three Europa League quarter-final draws, French side Lyon play Turkish club Besiktas, Dutch giants Ajax meet German team Schalke, while Spain’s Celta Vigo face Belgium’s Genk.

United are considered the favorites by many bookmakers, as the only British team left in the tournament. They hope to reach the Europa League final on May 24 at Stockholm’s Friends Arena— where Swedish forward Ibrahimovic is having a statue built in his honor.

Earlier this week, Rostov were banned from hosting games due to their field’s poor conditions, which Mourinho among others complained about.

Monaco defeated Manchester City at home in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second-leg game with early goals from Kylian Mbappé, Fabinho Tavares, as well as a second-half header from Tiemoué Bakayoko.

Monaco Beats Man City 3-1, Advances to Champions League Quarterfinals

After having lost at City 5-3 in the first leg three weeks ago, Monaco delivered a strong start Wednesday. Mbappé, an 18-year-old French forward scored from close range in the eighth minute to make it 1-0 for his 11th goal in as many games.

Brazilian midfielder Fabinho doubled the lead in the 29th with a sharp shot from near the penalty spot.

In the first-leg game, City had rallied from 3-2 down with three goals in the final 20 minutes, and manager Pep Guardiola’s team was seeking another comeback in Monaco.

Despite Wednesday’s loss, City improved significantly in the second half, with 21-year-old German midfielder Leroy Sané scoring in the 71st minute. Sané scored after City’s top scorer, Argentine Sergio Aguero, had missed several good chances.

The German youngster fired a shot into the top of the net after goalie Danijel Subasic’s save from Raheem Sterling’s low shot fell right into his path.

Bakayoko, a 22-year-old French midfielder, provided Monaco with the magic goal, his first-ever Champions League score, by knocking the ball in with a header off a free-kick from Thomas Lemar in the 77th minute.

Though the aggregate of the two legs is 6-6, Monaco advances to the Champions League quarterfinals on the away goals rule.

In the night’s other game, Atletico Madrid also progressed to the quarterfinals, tying 0-0 at home to Bayer Leverkusen to advance 4-2 on aggregate.

Sergi Roberto proved to be the unlikely hero for Barcelona on Wednesday after he scored the winning goal in stoppage time of his team’s 6-1 home victory over Paris St. Germain.

Barcelona Beats PSG 6-5 On Aggregate to Reach Champions League Quarter-finals

Barcelona made Champions League history with the win by becoming the first club overturn a 4-0 deficit in the first leg of the tournament’s Round of 16.

Following their 6-5 aggregate victory, the Catalan club will advance to the Champions League quarter-finals for the 10th straight season.

After Roberto’s goal in the 95th minute— his first of the season— his teammates rushed to celebrate with the 25-year-old Spaniard, who had scored on a cross by kicking the ball in before it even hit the ground, while Lionel Messi ran toward the fans. When he reached the edge of the field at Camp Nou, the Argentine jumped atop an advertising board and held his arms up high. Messi stayed there for a few seconds, then dropped to be embraced by his adoring fans.

Chants of “Si se puede, si se puede!”  (“Yes we can, yes we can!”) filled the Camp Nou.

Three weeks earlier, on Feb. 14, Barcelona had suffered a crushing 4-0 loss to the same opponents in Paris. A few days later, Barca’s manager Luis Enrique confirmed he would leave at the end of the season, stating the job had left him “exhausted.” Now, the team gave their home crowd of 96,000 a reason to celebrate.

Barcelona has been a European soccer powerhouse for the last 10 years. It boasts four Champions League titles— 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015— and has reached the semifinals of the tournament for the past seven years.

Nevertheless, their roster is aging. Several greats have left, including Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol, while others are nearing the final years of their careers. Luis Suarez is 30 and Messi will reach that age in June. Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique are past the 30 mark.

The Catalans were up 3-1 (down 5-3 on aggregate) in the 88th minute but scored three goals in the final seven minutes, including two from Neymar (one free-kick and one penalty).

Suarez opened scoring with a header just three minutes into the game, and then PSG’s French defender Layvin Kurzawa scored an own goal in the 40th to give Barca a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Five minutes after the break, Neymar fell over Thomas Meunier in the box and Messi scored the penalty to make it 3-0.

Edinson Cavani scored PSG’s lone goal in the 62nd minute, but then Neymar and substitute Roberto provided the big moments for Barcelona in the end.

There were many different ways to describe the grand comeback victory, and several members of Barcelona’s squad weighed in on the moment.

Midfielder Ivan Rakitic called it the team’s “Super Bowl” moment, with Neymar acting as Barca’s Tom Brady. Enrique described the game “Like a film. A horror film, not a thriller.” Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, abandoned his post and trotted up the field to join the celebration.

Clearly, it all felt like a dream that had not yet fully sunk in for Barcelona.

Real Madrid was widely viewed as the heavy favorite to win Wednesday’s Round of 16 game against Napoli.

Real Madrid Beat Napoli 3-1 In Champions League Round Of 16 First Leg

Madrid is the defending champion, while the Italian club last reached this stage of the tournament in 2012.

After trailing 1-0 following an early goal from Napoli, Madrid scored two second-half goals to race to a 3-1 home victory on Wednesday in a game that marked the first time the two teams met in a European competition in 30 years.

The visitors took a lead just eight minutes in after Lorenzo Insigne caught Madrid goalie Keylor Navas off guard with a fantastic volley that kept the crowd at Santiago Bernabeu mostly silent. Insigne got the assist from Napoli’s Slovak captain Marek Hamsik, who deftly cut through Madrid’s defense.

The hosts had a scoring chance in the opening minute, when Cristiano Ronaldo set up Karim Benzema for a close-range shot, but it was blocked by goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

However, ten minutes after Insigne’s goal, Benzema gave Madrid hope by scoring their first goal with a header off a stellar cross from Dani Carvajal. Benzema has now scored in his fourth straight Champions League game (five goals), matching his previous longest streak (2010-11 and 2014-15). The Frenchman is also now fifth in the competition’s all-time leading scorers, overtaking Thierry Henry. 

Though Ronaldo didn’t score, he did provide the assist on Madrid’s second goal just four minutes after halftime. The Portuguese striker cut in from the right and took his time to feed the onrushing Toni Kroos, who fired a hard, low shot past Reina.

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who will be 25 later this month, sealed the win for Madrid in the 54th minute with a powerful volley from far outside the box that flew past the diving Reina into the far corner.

Diego Maradona, the former Argentine star who helped transform Napoli into a dominant club during his stint with the team in the late 1980s, attended Wednesday’s game.

Napoli had several scoring chances after Casemiro’s goal, including a shot from Dries Mertens that flew over from right in front of goal with about half an hour remaining.

The Italian club will host the second-leg game on March 7, and will seek to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.

“In the second leg we’ll try to overturn the situation,” Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri said. “We need no mistakes and to create more chances. I still believe we can make it. I’m confident. I’ve told my players not to give up and the same counts for me. We need to be stronger than ever.”

Another coach who faces a challenge following a Champions League loss is Barcelona’s Luis Enrique, whose club suffered a blistering 4-0 defeat on Tuesday at Paris Saint-Germain.

Ronaldo has now gone 523 minutes without a Champions League goal– his longest drought in the competition with Real Madrid.
