Soccer legend Ronaldinho was issued house arrest in Paraguay on Wednesday after entering the country with an alleged fake passport. The Paraguay national police arrested the former Barcelona star and his brother Robert on March 4. According to the prosecutor’s office, Ronaldinho and his brother both had ID cards and passports in their possession when they were taken into custody.

Before they were granted house arrest, they remained in a prison in Asuncion, the nation’s capital, and attended court via video conference on Tuesday. Judge Gustavo Amarilla informed the court that both men had paid their bond amount of $800,000 each and would now be placed in a local hotel until the investigation is concluded.

Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, better known as Ronaldinho, allegedly used an authentic passport to enter Paraguay but the document contained false information. Other documents were acquired from his suite at the Yacht Resort Hotel and Golf Club in Lambare, prosecutors said in a statement posted on Facebook.

“Ronaldinho and his brother entered the country at 9.05 a.m. on a commercial flight which landed at Silvio Petirossi International Airport,” public prosecutor Federico Delfino said in the statement. “They entered using a Paraguayan passport which was authentic but contained false information. We now know that the numbers of these passports belong to other people. They are real passports but with fake details. They were issued in January 2020, and the ID cards, which were given to them when they arrived, in December.”

Both men reportedly left their native Brazil with authentic Brazilian passports but the investigation is ongoing and more information will be reported when available.

Ronaldinho is most known for his flashy style of play and highlight goals. In 17 years of professional experience, he played for F.C. Barcelona, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain. He was also a star on the Brazil national team where he netted 33 goals and helped his side win the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - JUNE 05: Ronaldinho of Rest of the World in action during the Soccer Aid 2016 match in aid of UNICEF at Old Trafford on June 5, 2016 in Manchester, England.

Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho and former Argentina international Juan Roman Riquelme are reportedly willing to come out of retirement in order to help Chapecoense, the Brazilian soccer team who lost several members in a fatal plane crash in Colombia on Monday night.

In total, 71 people–including players and coaching staff– died in the crash, and only three players survived. Gestures of solidarity and relief efforts have come in all forms across the globe: teams like Barcelona and the Cleveland Cavaliers have held a minute of silence before their games or practices, and Paris Saint-Germain as well as Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo have donated millions to the families.

Now, Ronaldinho, 36, and Riquelme, 38, are saying they are prepared to sign with the club as players and help them out during this time of great need.

Ronaldinho is currently without a club after being released by Rio-based Brazlian club Fluminense in September 2015, while Riquelme simply retired two years ago.

Ronaldinho’s agent and brother, Roberto Assis, confirmed that the former Brazil international is ready to help out the club in any way possible.

“It is a very difficult time,” Assis told Globo Esporte. “Later on, if there is a contact, we can talk. I can only say that we are here and we want to help.”

Ronaldinho was particularly affected by the death of Chapecoense right-back Matheus Bibeco, a family friend who, like Ronaldinho, also started his career at his home club Gremio.

He posted a photograph of a game he played against Matheus with a message on his Instagram account: “Go in peace Matheus! My condolences to your family! I wish them all the strength and peace going forward.”

Ronaldinho, a two-time FIFA World Player of the Year, played for Paris-Saint Germain and AC Milan, and won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002. He also won a Champions League with Barcelona in the 2005-2006 season.

“Ronaldinho’s name was mentioned because he’s loved and without a club,” Assis said.

“He fits the profile and can be the right guy. But at the moment, we want to help families and it wouldn’t be right to create expectations for now.

“As Brazilians, we feel involved. We are together.”

Former FIFA World Player of the Year Ronaldinho is past his prime on the regular soccer field, but in his first game in India’s Premier Futsal (indoor soccer) League, the 36-year-old Brazilian legend delivered, scoring five goals.

Ronaldinho Scores 5 Goals In First Game Of Professional Indoor Soccer In India

Ronaldinho scored five times for Goa at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, leading his team to a 7-2 victory over Bengaluru. Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes, 41, also scored five goals for Bengaluru.

Every trick Ronaldinho pulled drew gasps from the nearly 7,000 strong audience in the stadium. Of the five goals the former Barcelona and A.C. Milan attacker scored, the fourth seemed to be the most memorable. The opposing goalkeeper was caught up-field and Goa retrieved the ball, sending it to Ronaldinho, who still had one outfield player to beat. The Brazilian brought down the ball from the air with his right leg and chipped his opponent.

Ronaldinho, who also played for Paris Saint-Germain and Queretaro in the Mexican league, will now be leaving the Premier Futsal League, however, due to his commitments as the ambassador of the 2016 Paralympics in Rio.
