Seahawks WR Ricardo Lockette: ‘My Trainers Saved My Life’

Lockette, 29, was injured during the Seahawks’ 13-12 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Nov. 1. He crashed into Dallas safety Jeff Heath during punt coverage and then just lay motionless on the field before being carted off.

“What saved my life is the trainers,” Lockette said. “The trainers came over, and they did it perfectly, perfectly by the book. The way that they held my neck, all the training is what saved my life. If they would have went too far to the left or moved me without stabilizing this or that, then I would have been dead.”

“If the returner at the time would have broken a couple tackles, and they would have rolled and fell on me, I would have died on that field,” Lockette added. He also thanked the firefighters and paramedics, and offered to help them in any way possible. He recently visited them in Redmond, Wash.

The wide receiver was forced to undergo surgery to stabilize ligament damage in his neck. He also suffered a concussion and disk injury, which caused him to miss the remainder of the 2015 season, and continues to wear a neck brace.

Lockette signed with the Seahawks in 2011 as an undrafted free agent and is expected to play next season.

Chicago Bears v Seattle Seahawks: Ricardo Lockette

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette, 29, was forced to go into surgery after suffering ligament and disk damage in his neck during the second quarter of the Seahawks’ game against the Cowboys in Dallas on November 1, after Cowboys linebacker Jeff Heath hit him hard following a punt return.

However, Lockette did not simply sit at home miserable after he was released from the hospital. Instead, he showed in one random act of kindness three days later just how selfless he is. After leaving a Dallas hospital on Nov. 5, he spotted a neighborhood filled with homeless people on his way to the airport with his parents. Lockette then asked his driver to stop at a nearby McDonald’s. He then bought 100 cheeseburgers and returned to the sidewalk to give them to the group of homeless people.

“He had a neck brace on while he was passing out the burgers,” the receiver’s father, Earl Lockette, told TMZ. “So some people were like, ‘What happened to you?’ But Ricardo didn’t try and bring attention to who he was.

Some of the people did purportedly recognize the athlete, although his father stated that this was more of an opportunity for his son to show how prepared he was to help others in need.

Following his injury, Lockette is expected to be put on season-ending injured reserve this week.
