Scott Blackmun is abandoning his post as chief executive of the U.S. Olympic Commitee amid growing pressure from the case involving former gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar.

US Olympic CommitTee chief resignation news

Nassar has been sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexually abusing more than 150 female athletes over the past nine years.

Blackmun was held in high esteem and considered a stabilizing person in an organization long fraught with messy leadership. However, following criticism of the USOC’s handling of Nassar’s crimes, led at least two U.S. senators, about 30 former Olympians, athletes’ representatives and child advocacy experts to call for Blackmun to step down.

Blackmun had served as USOC head since 2010, and in January announced that he had prostate cancer, a diagnosis that prevented him from attending the recent Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Following a long case in January that included harrowing victim statements during hearings and a conviction for Nassar, Blackmun demanded resignations from the entire board of USA Gymnastics, and the members complied within days. The head of USA Gymnastics had resigned last March.

Larry Probst, the chairman of the Olympic Committee’s board, said in a press conference before the Pyeongchang Games that Blackmun would keep his job — for which he was paid $1 million in 2016 — until the organization had completed an independent investigation of its own actions in the Nassar case.

Probst stated Wednesday that Blackmun was resigning due to his health. Aside from the change in leadership, the USOC noted it would also increase funding for Nassar’s victims, as well as a plan to re-evaluate the basic governance structure of American Olympic sports.

“The USOC is at a critical point in its history,” Mr. Probst said in a statement. “The important work that Scott started needs to continue and will require especially vigorous attention in light of Larry Nassar’s decades-long abuse of athletes affiliated with USA Gymnastics.”

The Nassar scandal also affected Michigan State University, the doctor’s former employer. Both MSU’s president and athletic director resigned in late January amid increasing state and federal probes into how much and how long the university knew of Nassar’s misconduct.

Susanne Lyons, a former VISA executive who has been on the committee’s board since 2010, will serve as acting chief executive until a permanent head is found, the USOC said.

The Miami Dolphins (2-2) are fourth in the AFC East following a 16-10 home loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, although that is not currently their greatest problem.

Dolphins Assistant Coach Chris Foerster Resignation News

Offensive line coach Chris Foerster resigned early Monday after a video surfaced over the weekend in which he appeared to be snorting a white powder that resembled cocaine.

Foerster said in a statement that he will seek professional help.

“I am resigning from my position with the Miami Dolphins and accept full responsibility for my actions,” Foerster said. “I want to apologize to the organization and my sole focus is on getting the help that I need with the support of my family and medical professionals.”

In the clip, Foerster is seen using a $20 bill to snort the substance off a table and then saying to the camera, “Hey, I miss you. … Thinking about you. … How about me going to a meeting and doing this before I go.”

Here is the video, as shared by Cox Media’s Ollie Connolly:

According to the New York Daily News, the video was posted to Facebook by a Las Vegas stripper named Kijuana Nige, but has since been deleted.

Dolphins head coach Adam Gase said he learned of the video’s existence around 10:45pm EST on Sunday.

“It’s not a good situation,” Gase said. “It’s not something you expect. But things happen sometimes that you don’t anticipate and you have to deal with it. It’s not fun, especially when you’re close to somebody. But you gotta take the next step and move on, because we’re going to play on Sunday.”

Foerster — who will be 56 on Thursday — was one of the top-paid assistant coaches in the NFL, with a salary estimated to be between $2.5 and $3 million a year. He previously served as an assistant coach for several teams including the Washington Redskins, Baltimore Ravens, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings.

Gase also apparently described Foerster using a poor choice of words, according to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. “Since I’ve been around him, he’s always been a guy that just put his head down and work,” Gase said. “He was here are 4 in the morning, worked as hard as he could for us. It is what it is.”

The two coaches have known each other since 2008.

This is not the first time a Miami offensive line coach has lost his job following a controversy. In 2014, the Dolphins fired assistant coach Jim Turner after Ted Wells’ investigation into the bullying scandal in the team’s locker room where Jonathan Martin was harassed by his teammates on the offensive line.

Miami was already heavily criticized and mocked during the offseason for signing quarterback Jay Cutler to a one-year, $10 million deal, and this will surely provide more fodder for derision.

The Dolphins next visit the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

University of Mississippi football coach Hugh Freeze resigned effective immediately on Thursday night following allegations of phone calls Freeze made to a number associated with a female escort service.

Ole Miss Football NEWS: Hugh Freeze

Assistant head coach Matt Luke — who is in his sixth season as co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach — was named acting head coach.

According to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, it was Rebels athletic director Ross Bjork who told the network that Ole Miss officials discovered a pattern of Freeze’s calls to the service.

Ole Miss chancellor Jeffrey Vitter announced in a press conference late Thursday that 47-year-old Freeze would resign immediately after confirming to him and Bjork “a pattern of personal misconduct inconsistent with the standards we expect from the leader of our football team.”

“While Coach Freeze served our university well in many regards during his tenure, we simply cannot accept the conduct in his personal life that we have discovered,” Vitter added.

Bjork said Freeze would have been fired had he refused to resign. The Rebels head coach had approximately $2 million remaining on his contract this year, $5 million next year and $5.15 million for the 2019 season but will not be paid going forward.

The Ole Miss athletic director also revealed that university officials delved deep into Freeze’s phone records on a school-provided cellphone and searched as far back as 2012, shortly after the coach was hired.

“Once we looked at the rest of the phone records we found a pattern,” Bjork told ESPN. “It was troubling.”

Freeze’s predecessor Houston Nutt — who served as Ole Miss’s football coach from 2008 to 2011 and is now a college football analyst for CBS Sports — filed a federal lawsuit against the university on July 12 alleging that his former employer violated the terms of its severance agreement. One day afterward, Nutt’s attorney Thomas Mars sent an e-mail to the school’s general counsel Lee Tyner, referencing a “phone call Coach Freeze made that would be highly embarrassing for all of you and extremely difficult to explain.”

The call Mars was referring to was one Freeze made on the night of Jan. 19, 2016, to a Detroit (313) area code and lasted just one minute, according to the emails the two parties exchanged. However, the phone number is associated with several Web sites advertising a female escort based in Tampa, Fla., according to USA TODAY Sports.

Tyner answered on July 14 by dismissing Mars’ suggestion that the phone call might be connected to Ole Miss’ ongoing NCAA infractions case. Tyner said the university had investigated the matter and that “the call to the Detroit number that lasted one minute (or less) appears to be a misdial.”

When ESPN asked Freeze about the phone call, the head coach vehemently denied purposely calling an escort service.

“We call the wrong numbers all the time,” Freeze said.

In his six seasons in charge of Ole Miss Football, Freeze led the Rebels to a 39-25 record, including a 19-21 mark against SEC rivals. After going 10-3 in 2015, the football program fell to 5-7 this past season. The Rebels begin the next season against South Alabama in about six weeks.

Ole Miss was recently rocked by another scandal. In February, the university self-imposed a one-year bowl ban for the 2017 season after it received a new NCAA notice of allegations that accused the school of lack of institutional control and Freeze of failure to monitor his coaching staff.

Following the allegations, which cite 21 rule violations in total, the Rebels have been forced to forfeit their share of SEC postseason revenues for this coming season, which could be as much as $7.8 million.

The NCAA also accused Ole Miss’s football program of providing improper benefits, including cash payments and merchandise, to prospects, as well as lodging and meals to recruits and their families, among other charges.

The Rebels are expected to appear before the NCAA Committee on Infractions in Indianapolis later this summer, possibly in September.
