The head of Milwaukee’s police department apologized on Wednesday night after a video surfaced of officers using a taser on NBA player Sterling Brown in an incident in January.

Chief Alfonso Morales added that the police officers were being “disciplined” after an investigation into the matter.

“The department conducted an investigation into the incident which revealed members acted inappropriately and those members were recently disciplined,” Morales said, according to CNN. “I am sorry this incident escalated to this level.”

According to CNN, Morales did not take any questions.

An uproar began on social media after body-cam footage showed a group of policemen surrounding 23-year-old Milwaukee Bucks guard Brown in the early morning hours of January 26 and began questioning him over an alleged parking violation outside a Walgreens. Brown refused to let the officers continue to reprimand him for the alleged violation and when he did not cooperate with their demands, they tased him and arrested him.

“Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated case. It shouldn’t require an incident involving a professional athlete to draw attention to the fact that vulnerable people in our communities have experienced similar, and even worse, treatment,” the Bucks said in a statement shared by CNN. “We are grateful for the service of many good police officers that courageously protect us, our fans and our city, but racial biases and abuses of power must not be ignored.”

In the body-cam video, one policeman asks Brown why he is parked across some handicapped spaces and then repeatedly tells the basketball player to “back up.”

After several tense exchanges between the officer and Brown, the former calls for backup and says “We’re going to figure out what we’re gonna do.”

“You can’t do that by yourself?” Brown replies.

The officers who arrive later are heard asking Brown to remove his hands from his pockets. Brown only says he has “stuff” in his pockets and the police then proceed to force him to the ground and use their stun gun on him.

This is one of several incidents of police brutality against African-Americans that has further fueled the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

On Thursday, ESPN’s Michelle Beadle explained how the incident involving Brown is connected to the national anthem protests that have taken place in the NFL and in other major sports leagues. The NFL announced on Wednesday that players who kneeled or sat during the anthem would be fined, although they can choose to stay in the locker room.

The judge reportedly set bail at $10,000. Bennett will be allowed to travel between his home in the Honolulu area and Houston for court appearances.

The defensive lineman is accused of injuring a 66-year-old paraplegic woman who was working at NRG Stadium during Super Bowl LI. He faces a penalty of up to ten years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

“We treat everyone the same in this court,” Judge Robert Johnson told Bennett, according to KHOU.com.

The District Attorney said Bennett was in Houston for Super Bowl LI in order to see his brother Martellus, who at the time played for the New England Patriots, face off against the Atlanta Falcons in the national championship game on Feb. 5, 2017. Michael Bennett reportedly shoved his way through the crowd of security officials at NRG Stadium and one of them was an older woman.

The Eagles and the Seahawks — Bennett’s former team — were both reportedly unaware of the investigation into the players’ actions prior to his trade to Philadelphia on March 7.

Aldon Smith 2016: Minnesota Vikings v Oakland Raiders

The San Francisco Police Department have opened an investigation into a domestic violence incident involving Oakland Raiders outside linebacker Aldon Smithpolice confirmed Monday.

Raiders’ Aldon Smith Cooperating With Domestic Violence Probe

Smith missed the 2016 season due to an NFL-mandated suspension.

“He is cooperating with SFPD and the reporting party,” Officer Grace Gatpandan told ESPN.com. “The report was taken over the weekend, and he was mentioned in the report.”

No arrests have been made or charges officially filed.

TMZ Sports first reported the investigation on Monday.

Raiders owner Mark Davis stated in 2015 that the team had a “zero-tolerance” policy regarding domestic violence.

“It’s just something we can’t tolerate,” Davis said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “I don’t know how to fix it in society but I know we can’t have it on our team.”

The team is forbidden from having any contact with Smith under the rules of his suspension, which was handed down in November 2015 following several incidents that included two DUIs, when he was with the San Francisco 49ers.

Smith has applied for reinstatement, although in December, the league deferred ruling the linebacker’s case until March.

“We are looking into the matter,” Brian McCarthy, NFL vice president of communications, told ESPN’s Adam Caplan on Tuesday.

Smith is determined to return to the league. “I’m back,” he said last week on Instagram Live. “And there’s nobody who can stop me.”

Should Smith be reinstated, he would be able to join the Raiders and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack for the beginning of their offseason program April 17. Rookie minicamp is scheduled for May 5-7, with OTAs set for May 23-25, May 30-June 1 and June 5-8. Mandatory minicamp is scheduled for June 13-15.

Smith, the No. 7 overall draft pick in 2011 by the 49ers, has 47.5 sacks in 59 career games. He was released by the Niners in August 2015.

A video of a man purportedly holding a blunt on a Periscope account belonging to Smith arose last offseason, although Smith denied it was him and eventually removed the video.

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio, who signed an extension on Friday, said late last season he was “a little disappointed” after the NFL declined to reinstate Smith.

“Obviously, it’s not my job to make a rule, but from everything I’ve gathered, he’s done his duty to take care of all the things he needs to take care of,” Del Rio said.

“I see some of the guys that have been allowed back. My question is what’s the difference? It’s always a question mark. If a guy has a chance, he should have a chance to make a living.”

The Carolina Panthers suffered a crushing 22-10 home loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, a defeat that was particularly stinging given the string a riots that have rocked Charlotte since the shooting by police of an unarmed black man earlier this week.

The unrest began after Charlotte police shot and killed 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott on Tuesday, while another man, Justin Carr, died from gunshot wounds (allegedly inflicted by another civilian) during a protest just one day later. Several of the Panthers players have spent the past week answering questions regarding the protests in the North Carolina city, while all were affected by the midnight curfews and the growing presence of police in riot gear downtown.

Bank of America Stadium was surrounded by such law enforcement during Sunday’s game.

Interim City Manager Ron Kimble declared Sunday’s game to be an “extraordinary event,” which allows the city to “modify its permitting process for activities such as parades and specifies particular items that are prohibited from being brought into certain boundaries of the event.”

On Wednesday, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency, and protests have largely been peaceful since.

About 100 protesters kneeled outside the stadium in Charlotte as the national anthem was played. The Panthers did their best to ignore all of the distractions.

“We talked about it a lot,” said Carolina tight end Greg Olsen. “I don’t know what else there is to be said. There’s a lot going on in the city. This game wasn’t (being played) to save lives or to change the world. We wanted the city to feel good (about itself) more than on a typical Sunday.”

The Panthers initially began giving their city something to cheer for when they built an early 10-point lead in the first quarter. However, the Vikings answered with their first points on a safety after sacking Carolina quarterback Cam Newton in the Panthers end zone. The hosts’ early momentum also continued to disappear after Minnesota return man Marcus Sherels returned a punt 54 yards for a touchdown. By the end of the game, Carolina left the field with very few things to be proud of: the one pass thrown to their best wide receiver, Kelvin Benjamin; the eight sacks compiled by Minnesota’s defense; and their lackluster performance in the second half as the Vikings took control of the matchup.

The Vikings have recently become beset by a long string of injuries to starts like quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, running back Adrian Peterson, left tackle Matt Kalil and defensive tackle Sharriff Floyd.

The Vikings (3-0) are still undefeated this season, after victories against Tennessee and Green Bay. The Panthers, meanwhile, are now 1-2 this season, which seems strange given the fact Carolina lost only two games last year, including Super Bowl 50 to the Denver Broncos. The Broncos also defeated the Panthers in this season’s opener.

Nevertheless, this game evidently came under different circumstances, especially for the Panthers.

“I don’t think that’s fair,” said head coach Ron Rivera when asked if the week’s events played some role in Sunday’s outcome. “When we are here, we practice and we do the things we are supposed to do. We got out and answered the questions. What happened here was very tragic and what we were hoping to do was come out and put that aside for a while. We just didn’t play very well.”

The Panthers will next visit the Falcons in Atlanta on Sunday, while the Vikings will host the New York Giants on Monday, Oct. 3.
