Poland was eliminated from the 2018 World Cup in Russia on Sunday after losing to Colombia 3-0 in its second game of the tournament.

Colombia Eliminates Poland From World Cup 2018

Led by star striker Robert Lewandowski, Poland is virtually out of the World Cup after just one round. Yerra Mina, Radamel Falcao and Juan Cuadrado all scored for Colombia in Kazan, Russia to give the Latin Americans their first victory in the competition, after losing to Japan 2-1 in their opener.

James Rodriguez, Colombia’s star forward who plays for Bayern Munich, played just 30 minutes in his national team’s opening game because of a calf injury. On Sunday, however, he provided great power to Colombia’s offense and helped set up the first goal. In the 40th minute, Rodriguez took a pass on the right side of the box and then lobbed it to the center of the penalty area for Mina to head it home from just a few yards out.

The second goal came in the 70th minute, when Juan Fernando Quintero fed Falcao with a through pass that the latter received just outside the box before racing forward to knock it in with the outside of his cleat as Poland’s goalie Wojciech Szczesny rushed out to make a save.

Cuadrado’s goal came five minutes later, after Rodriguez sent a pass from near the left sideline to feed Cuadrado, and Poland’s defense simply had no opportunity to tackle him. Cuadrado raced toward the middle and slotted past Szczesny to make it 3-0.

Colombia are third in Group H with three points, while Japan and Senegal each have four points. Colombia and Senegal next face off on Thursday at 10am EST, at the same time Japan and Poland will play their final group-stage game. Japan and Senegal tied 2-2 on Sunday, while England routed Panama 6-1.

On Saturday, Mexico defeated South Korea 2-1 and Germany also secured a 2-1 victory over Sweden after trailing 1-0 at halftime.

Senegal defeated Poland 2-1 in both countries’ opening FIFA World Cup game in Moscow on Tuesday, but the African nation’s second goal after halftime proved to be controversial.

M’Baye Niang had started walking off the field in the 60th minute following an injury but was then quickly approved by the referee to continue playing, and Senegal ended up making no substitution.

Niang raced toward the goal as Polish defender Jan Bednarek appeared to still believe the Senegal player was coming off. Niang beat Bednarek and Poland’s goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesney rushed out of his penalty box, presumably to stop Senegal from scoring. However, by then it was far too late and Niang lobbed it over the goalie before tapping it in from close range to put his national team up 2-0.

“When I left the pitch, it was an attack for Poland,” Niang said after the game, according to the New York Times. “When I came back on I saw a ball that was coming back to the defense. I felt that there was a chance to be taken.”

Poland coach Adam Nawałka, meanwhile, called the situation “a misunderstanding,” and added he was almost certain that Bednarek was as confused as he seemed to have been.

Senegal’s first score was an own goal that came in the 37th minute. Sadio Mane passed to Idrissa Gueye who fired a shot on goal that was deflected off the leg of Poland’s Thiago Cionek and landed in the back of the net.

Poland scored in the 86th minute on a free kick, after Grzegorz Krychowiak — who passed the ball back to Bednarek right before Senegal’s second goal — headed home the cross in the box. The Eastern Europeans were the favorites to win their opener in the tournament, and were backed by a large fan base in Moscow, but were simply unable to figure out Senegal.

Senegal and Japan now lead Group H with three points apiece after the latter team upset Colombia 2-1 earlier on Tuesday in Russia. Colombia was forced to play most of the game with 10 men due to an early red card.

Poland next faces Colombia on Sunday at 2pm EST. Senegal will play Japan earlier on Sunday, at 11am EST.

Later on Tuesday, Russia defeated Egypt 3-1.

Anita Wlodarcyk of Poland broke her own women’s hammer throw world record to claim the gold medal in Rio on Monday.

Poland’s Anita Wlodarczyk Breaks Own World Record To Win Hammer Throw Olympic Gold

Her winning throw landed at 82.29m (269 feet, 11 inches). Wlodarcyk, the 2012 Olympic silver medalist, entered the Rio 2016 Games with a 28-meet undefeated streak that began in 2014.

China’s Wenxiu Zhang won silver with a mark of 76.75m (251 feet, 9 inches). Sophie Hitchon broke Great Britain’s national record (74.54m)  on route to claiming the bronze medal.

Wlodarcyk won gold by using the old, gray and tattered left glove of former champion and close friend, the late Kamila Skolimowska.

Skolimowska, gold medalist at the 2000 Sydney Games as a teenager and the biggest star of hammer at the time, died in 2009 at the age of 26 after suffering a pulmonary embolism at a Poland team training camp in Portugal.

Since then, Wlodarczyk, 31, has competed using her good friend’s glove. She’s had to repair it a few times but she said she’ll use it for the rest of her career.

“I still throw with this glove. I still have memories of her,” Wlodarczyk said through a translator. “It was 16 years ago that she won in Sydney and I’m very happy that I continued this tradition.”

The Rawicz, Poland native won the hammer throw world title in 2009 and has set six world records since then.

Team USA’s Amber Campbell finished sixth on Monday, and compatriot DeAnna Price was eighth. No U.S. woman has won a medal since the event debuted on the women’s Olympic program in 2000.

On a scalding hot day at the Olympic Stadium, and after pouring bottles of cold water over herself to stay cool during the event. After winning the competition, she leaped in joy again, and called it an “explosion of happiness.”

Then, she paraded around the track, holding the Polish flag high above her head. Wlodarcyzk felt no shame in admitting how exhausted she was after everything.

“I couldn’t move, especially after the run around the stadium,” she said, sitting on a stool after struggling to stand for media interviews. “I’m extremely tired, but I’m very happy I’m in one piece and without any injury.”

The men’s hammer throw competition begins Wednesday morning, and the final will be held Friday night.

Portugal defeated Poland 5-3 in penalties at the first UEFA Euro 2016 quarterfinal in Marseille on Thursday after tying 1-1 in regulation.

Portugal, who have failed to win any of their games this tournament in regulation, will next face either Wales or Belgium in the semifinals on Wednesday, July 6. Those two teams will play on Friday.

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, 27, put Poland ahead 1-0 just 1 minute, 40 seconds into the game with a one-time shot from the box after a cross from the left side by Kamil Grosicki. Lewandowski’s goal, his first of the tournament, was the second-fastest score in Euro 2016 history. The quickest goal was Dmitri Kirichenko’s for Russia against Greece after 65 seconds in 2004.

Then in the 33rd minute, Lewandowski’s Bayern teammate, 18-year-old midfielder Renato Sanches, scored in his first international start for Portugal to tie the game. After receiving a pass from Nani and briefly maneuvering around a few Polish defenders, Sanches fired a left-footer– which deflected off Grzegorz Krychowiak– from the edge of the box and into the corner past goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański. 

Very little happened from then on, although there was a brief moment of drama late in extra time when a spectator ran onto the pitch. He was brought to ground by security and quickly removed.

Poland, who had never won a European Championship match before this tournament and finished bottom of their group on home soil four years ago, will bemoan their early missed opportunities and probably backed themselves in the shootout having got past Switzerland that way in the last round.

The only really clear chance of the second half came for Portugal in the 85th minute, when substitute Joao Moutinho lobbed a clever pass over the top only for Cristiano Ronaldo who, having taken the time to glance at the keeper’s positioning, failed to make any contact on the dropping ball with the goal wide open.

Finally, in penalties, Poland midfielder Jakub Błaszczykowski missed his team’s fourth shot to the right side of the goal, a shot which was saved by diving Portuguese goalie Rui Patricio. 

Ricardo Quaresma ended up scoring Portugal’s final penalty with a high shot to secure the victory for his team and send them into the semifinals for the fourth time in five tournaments.
