MLB Pitcher Roy Halladay Death News

No other details were immediately available, including the total number of victims, injuries or cause of the crash.

Halladay was an avid fan of flying:

He was one of only six pitchers to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues. On May 29, 2010, Halladay threw a perfect game to lead his team to a 1-0 victory against the Florida Marlins. In his first-ever playoff start later that season, Halladay tossed the second no-hitter in MLB postseason history against the Cincinatti Reds in Game 1 of the NLDS. In the latter game, Halladay struck out eight batters and walked one.

The right-handed ace — nicknamed “Doc” — also played for the Toronto Blue Jays for 12 seasons during his 16-year career. He made eight All-Star games.

Halladay retired with the Phillies in 2013 and finished his career with 203 wins, 2,117 strikeouts, and an ERA of 3.38. He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

People from all across the baseball world expressed their condolences for Halladay on social media after his passing:

Halladay is survived by his wife Brandy and his two children, Ryan and Braden.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - JUNE 05: Ronaldinho of Rest of the World in action during the Soccer Aid 2016 match in aid of UNICEF at Old Trafford on June 5, 2016 in Manchester, England.

Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho and former Argentina international Juan Roman Riquelme are reportedly willing to come out of retirement in order to help Chapecoense, the Brazilian soccer team who lost several members in a fatal plane crash in Colombia on Monday night.

In total, 71 people–including players and coaching staff– died in the crash, and only three players survived. Gestures of solidarity and relief efforts have come in all forms across the globe: teams like Barcelona and the Cleveland Cavaliers have held a minute of silence before their games or practices, and Paris Saint-Germain as well as Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo have donated millions to the families.

Now, Ronaldinho, 36, and Riquelme, 38, are saying they are prepared to sign with the club as players and help them out during this time of great need.

Ronaldinho is currently without a club after being released by Rio-based Brazlian club Fluminense in September 2015, while Riquelme simply retired two years ago.

Ronaldinho’s agent and brother, Roberto Assis, confirmed that the former Brazil international is ready to help out the club in any way possible.

“It is a very difficult time,” Assis told Globo Esporte. “Later on, if there is a contact, we can talk. I can only say that we are here and we want to help.”

Ronaldinho was particularly affected by the death of Chapecoense right-back Matheus Bibeco, a family friend who, like Ronaldinho, also started his career at his home club Gremio.

He posted a photograph of a game he played against Matheus with a message on his Instagram account: “Go in peace Matheus! My condolences to your family! I wish them all the strength and peace going forward.”

Ronaldinho, a two-time FIFA World Player of the Year, played for Paris-Saint Germain and AC Milan, and won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002. He also won a Champions League with Barcelona in the 2005-2006 season.

“Ronaldinho’s name was mentioned because he’s loved and without a club,” Assis said.

“He fits the profile and can be the right guy. But at the moment, we want to help families and it wouldn’t be right to create expectations for now.

“As Brazilians, we feel involved. We are together.”

The pilot of the plane carrying members of Brazilian soccer team Chapecoense that crashed in the Colombian mountains on Monday night pleaded to make an immediate landing because the aircraft was out of fuel, according to a recording leaked to Colombian news outlets on Wednesday.

Leaked Audio From Colombia Plane Crash

The audio shows the final minutes of the doomed flight, in which the pilot is heard frantically requesting permission from the air traffic tower to land immediately. A controller explained another plane had been diverted with mechanical problems and had priority; the controller then instructed the pilot to wait seven minutes.

As the plane circled, the pilot became impatient after waiting several minutes for further instructions. “Complete electrical failure, without fuel,” he said just moments before the jet finally crash-landed in a mountainous region on the outskirts of Medellin, Colombia.

Just before the recording went silent, the pilot stated he was flying at 9,000 feet, and made his final landing request. “Vectors, señorita. Landing vectors.” This audio, along with the lack of an explosion upon impact, point to a rare case of fuel running out as a cause of the crash of the plane, which experts say was flying at its maximum range.

Only six of the 77 passengers survived: three players, two crew members, and a journalist. The plane’s fuselage, engines and tail were all torn apart due to the crash. Chapecoense, a rising Brazilian soccer club, was headed to Colombia to play in the finals of the Copa Sudamericana, one of South America’s biggest soccer tournaments.

At least 21 journalists were reported to be on the flight as well.

Dr. Ana Gonzalez, the medical director at Clinica Somer, the hospital outside Medellin where three of the survivors were being treated, said two of them, both crew members, were in stable condition.

Alan Ruschel, a defender for Chapecoense, was in critical condition, she added. Mr. Ruschel spent time before the flight posting selfies on social media networks with his teammates.

“Alan is the patient with the most serious injuries,” Dr. González said. “It is too soon to tell if he will be able to walk again, but we hope that in the future he will.”

A chartered plane carrying 81 people, including members of a Brazilian soccer club, crashed on the outskirts of Medellin, Colombia, on Monday night, killing almost everyone onboard.

Plane Carrying Brazilian Soccer Team Chapecoense Crashes In Colombia, Killing Scores

Colombia’s civil aviation authority confirmed early Tuesday that six people had survived the crash — three players, two crew members and a journalist who was accompanying the team.

The flight was operated by a small airline, LaMia, and was carrying members of Brazilian first division soccer club Chapecoense. The team was traveling from Bolivia to Medellin, and was scheduled to play the first of a two-game Copa Sudamericana final against Colombian club Atletico Nacional on Wednesday. Authorities stated the plane crashed around 10 p.m. on Monday.

The survivors are Chapecoense players Alan Ruschel, Jackson Ragnar Follmann and Helio Hermito Zampier, plus flight attendant Ximena Suarez, aircraft mechanic Erwin Tumiri, and journalist Rafael Valmorbida.

The aircraft was carrying 72 passengers and nine crew members, according to a statement issued by the Medellin airport. Search and rescue efforts were delayed by low visibility and difficulty reaching the mountainous region.

The authorities stated the plane had reported electrical problems as it flew near the towns of La Ceja and La Union.

The fatal crash destroyed the hopes of one of Brazil’s top soccer clubs. In a national league plagued by corruption scandals, mismanagement, and lingering anger over the mess involving the national team’s embarrassing 7-1 loss to Germany in the Brazil 2014 World Cup semifinal, Chapecoense managed to achieve both success on the field and financial stability.

At least 21 journalists were reported to be onboard the plane, including reporters from Fox Latin America, the Globo television network and news organizations from southern Brazil.

Described by their coach as the “Brazilian Leicester City” Chapecoense had only been promoted to Brazil’s top-flight in 2014 for the first time since the 1970s (they were in the fourth-tier in 2009) and were in the midst of one of their best ever seasons.

In a televised address, President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia called the crash “a tragedy that has the whole region in mourning.” Santos also added that he had spoken with Brazilian President Michel Temer, offering any assistance needed.

Federico Gutiérrez, the mayor of Medellín, told Blu Radio that “emergency support, with firefighters, ambulances and the hospital network,” had been activated.

Conmebol, the governing body of South American soccer, issued a statement to say that all of the federation’s activities would be suspended until further notice. A number of teams in Brazil canceled events; Barcelona said it would hold a moment of silence before training on Tuesday; and clubs from across the world, including Manchester City and AC Milan, shared their condolences.

Romário de Souza Faria, a former striker for the Brazilian national team, expressed his “solidarity with the friends and families of the players, journalists, technical staff and flight crew” who died in the crash.

“God please help all those who were onboard the plane,” Alexandre Pato, who plays in Spain and has been a member of Brazil’s national team, wrote on Twitter.
