Yankees beat Twins 8-4 in AL Wild Card Game

Although Game three of the ALCS between the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees has yet to be played, Yankees manager Aaron Boone already has an eye on Game four, which is scheduled for Wednesday night in New York.

The forecasted rain has forced Boone to do some deep thinking about his pitching options heading into the important matchup. Game four is scheduled to begin at 8:08 p.m. EST on Wednesday.

After Game two, the series moved from Minute Maid Park in Houston, a park that has the potential to be covered via a retractable roof. In the Bronx, however, rain would fall into the seats at Yankee Stadium with no roof to stop it.

Boone was quick to say that while rain has been forecasted for all of Wednesday, it was still a long way away, something that indicates he was not going to jump and make a rash decision. The pressing question for most is whether or not the winner of Game one, Masahiro Tanaka, will come back on short rest to throw on Wednesday night, after throwing only 68 pitches in the first matchup of the series.

“No, I don’t see that,” Boone said of Tanaka starting Game four. “Unless it rains Wednesday, or unless we change our mind.’’

One other option for the Yankees would be to trot out southpaw J.A. Happ, who was the one to give up the walk-off home run to Carlos Correa that ended Game two of the series. Conversely, the Bronx Bombers could go with a less traditional approach and “staff” the game by using multiple different pitchers in their bullpen to eat up the innings.

Boone also talked about how he has been in recent contact with his father, Bob Boone, a former All-Star and Gold-Glover who is now an executive for the Washington Nationals.

“I talked to him last night on the ride (to the hotel) from the (team) bus,’’ Aaron Boone said of his father. “(I have to be) careful with what I say. I don’t want him Jedi mind-tricking me and sneaking information out of me.’’

Boone gave his team the day off on Monday in preparation for Tuesday’s matchup at home. Luis Severino is facing off against the Astros’ Gerrit Cole for Game three.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will host the Houston Astros on Tuesday night for Game 1 of the World Series, and the host team has announced their pitching rotation for the championship series.

Dodgers pitching rotation Game 1 World Series

The Dodgers will be playing in their first World Series since 1988 — when they beat the Oakland Athletics — while the Astros will be playing in their first championship series since 2005, when they were in the National League. Houston has never won a national MLB title, while Los Angeles has won six.

Tuesday’s Game 1 will begin at 8 pm EST on FOX. Clayton Kershaw (18-4, 2.31 ERA) will start for the Dodgers after helping his squad end the NLCS with six innings of one-run ball vs. the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. Kershawn owns a 3.63 ERA through 17 1/3 innings this postseason.

Opposing Kershaw will be fellow lefty Dallas Kuechel (14-5, 2.90 ERA), who boasts an incredible 1.78 ERA in his five career playoff starts and went 1-1 in the Astros’ ALCS victory over the Yankees while allowing four runs in 11 1/3 innings. This will mark the 2015 AL Cy Young Award Winner’s first World Series start.

Tuesday’s matchup will also be the first time since 1970 that Game 1 of the World Series is played between two teams that ended the regular season with 100 or more wins.

After Kershaw, the Dodgers will put the following pitchers on the mound: Rich Hill, then Yu Darvish, then Alex Wood.

Houston has not yet unveiled its rotation order, although it is believed Justin Verlander will follow Kuechel in Game 2.

The Astros beat the Yankees 4-0 at Minute Maid Park in Game 7 on Saturday, while the Dodgers routed the Cubs 11-1 in Game 5 on Thursday.

The New York Mets‘ pitching rotation is expected to receive a major boost next month.

Mets Pitching Rotation News

The team is hoping to have Matt Harvey come off the disabled list on Friday for the opener of a three-game road series against the Houston Astros. (Whether or not that game will be held at Minute Maid Park remains unclear, as much of Houston is currently underwater following Hurricane Harvey) The 28-year-old starting right-hander has posted a 4.63 ERA in four rehab starts in his comeback from a stress injury to his right scapula that has kept him on the DL since June 16.

Terry Collins’ team also plans to have Noah Syndergaard — who has been out since partially tearing his right lat April 30 — return to the rotation sometime in September.

In Harvey’s last outing on Saturday, he surrendered five runs, three of which were earned, over 4 ²/₃ innings for Double-A Binghamton against Portland.

“When he threw in Double-A last time, the reports weren’t all that glowing,” pitching coach Dan Warthen said. “But [minor league pitching coordinator] Glenn Abbott was raving about this last one. Matt’s delivery was the same every pitch, and everything was coming out cleanly.”

Harvey’s pitching speed hovered around 91- to 93-mph, although Warthen claimed those lower-than-usual statistics were not cause for worry.

“The fact he was repeating his delivery, I am pleased,” Warthen said.

Harvey missed the second half of last season after undergoing surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. The Mets discovered that the cause of the condition was that the muscles in the back of his right shoulder had atrophied.

“I understand my situation here,” Harvey said. “I know that I haven’t pitched well. I know that I caused some distractions.”

“I am not proud of that, but I can’t do anything about it except try and move forward. I feel good, I haven’t felt this good (on the mound) since 2015 and I am excited to get back.”

“I know I have to prove myself again,” Harvey added, “and I am ready to go out there and do that again.”

Meanwhile, Syndergaard threw to live batters for the first time on Saturday, and he is scheduled to throw another live batting practice session on Wednesday.

“I think he needs to pitch in a game,” said Collins. “I think we can get him one. I don’t know how many pitches he is throwing on Wednesday, but we could still get him in one.

“We certainly plan on getting him back some time in September.”

The Mets (57-73, 4th in National League East) lost to the Nationals 5-4 in Washington on Sunday and next begin a three-game series against the Reds in Cincinnati on Tuesday.
