Rory McIlroy found himself involved in a heated exchange with a fan during the final round of the PGA Championship after a disruptive “USA” chant from the gallery drew his attention during play.

McIlroy previously endured abuse from American fans at the Ryder Cup last November.

The incident occurred during a key moment of the round, when crowd noise from a spectator appeared to interrupt the atmosphere as McIlroy prepared for his shot. He reacted by turning to the gallery and addressing the fan, and the exchange quickly drew attention from those in attendance. Play continued shortly after, but the interaction became a focal point of discussion as the round progressed.

McIlroy remained in contention throughout the round, navigating and playing through a competitive field while dealing with the pressure of a major championship setting.

The incident occurred at a moment when the pro golfer’s composure and concentration were critical. This added another layer of difficulty in an already high-stakes situation. He continued performing as the tournament unfolded, with the incident serving as a notable moment during the final round.

The exchange also renewed discussion of fan behavior in golf, a hot topic historically. Crowd etiquette in golf is traditionally much more restrained than in other sports. Whenever there are loud crowds or disruptive behavior, it is frowned upon in the sport, and such behavior has become more common as of late. This has led to debate on how players and officials should react to such incidents.

As the tournament concluded, the moment remained a talking point among fans and analysts, highlighting the balance between crowd engagement and player concentration.

In October 2008, pro golfer John Daly was taken into custody in North Carolina because he was intoxicated and uncooperative with law enforcement outside of a Hooters.

Daly was never officially charged or arrested, but he spent 24 hours in Forsyth County Jail so he could get sober. Daly went into detail regarding this situation, mentioning that he had a few drinks and told his friends that he was going to sleep on his bus. Daily said he was known for sleeping with his eyes open, but his bus driver was unaware and called 911 because he thought Daly was dead.

Even though there was no legal action taken, the PGA suspended Daly for six months, fined him $10,000 and required him to attend an inpatient alcohol treatment program.

Daly is a highly successful golfer who many fans love due to his bold personality and his ability to drive the ball a long distance, which earned him the nickname “Long John.” He became the first golfer on the PGA Tour to average over 300 yards on his drives throughout a season.

In Daly’s professional career, he has 19 wins, including five on the PGA Tour. Two of his five wins on the PGA Tour are Major Championships, as he won the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 Open Championship. At the age of 59, Daly still competes on the PGA Tour Champions.

John Daly’s son, John Daly II, currently golfs at the University of Arkansas, which is his father’s alma mater.

J.J. Spaun, who entered the week ranked outside of the top 20, won the U.S. Open and did it in incredible fashion.

Entering the 72nd hole of the weekend, Spaun was up one stroke on Robert MacIntyre and needed a par on the hole to hold his lead.

Spaun opted for a birdie instead, draining a 64-foot putt and walking off the hole with his first career major championship.

“With the rain and everything, and then the putt. You couldn’t write a better story,” Spaun said. “I’m just so fortunate to be on the receiving end of that.”

Spaun started Sunday bogeying five of the first six holes, shooting a 40 on the front nine. After a rain delay, Spaun kicked into high gear, shooting a 32 on the back nine and finishing his round with back-to-back birdies.

He joins Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Jon Rahm as the only golfers to win a U.S. Open with a birdie-birdie finish.

Spaun entered the weekend with 120-1 odds to win the U.S. Open. His only previous PGA Tour win was the 2022 Valero Texas Open.

In addition to the winner’s share of $4.3 million, Spaun’s name will forever remain among the greats in the history of the tournament.

The PGA Tour is changing the format to its season-ending Tour Championship, which is dropping the controversial “starting strokes” system that has been in place since 2019 despite the pushback from players and fans.

At the season-ending event at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, all 30 players who qualify for the tournament will have a chance to win the Tour Championship and thus the FedEx Cup by winning the tournament.

There is no advantage for players based on their FedEx Cup points going into the event. Starting in 2019, the tournament saw the leader start at -10 with second-place starting at -8 and going down to even par for the last five players in the field.

The Tour has vowed to make East Lake a more stringent test as the change was approved Tuesday by the PGA Tour Policy Board.

“We want the Tour Championship to be the hardest tournament to qualify for and the FedEx Cup trophy the most difficult to win,” said reigning FedEx Cup champion Scottie Scheffler in a statement released by the Tour. “Shifting the Tour Championship to a more straight-up format with a tougher course setup makes it easier for fans to follow and provides a more challenging test for players–which brings out the best competition.”

The FedEx Cup bonus structure will likely change, although the Tour has yet to announce what the changes will be.

Last year, the bonus pool for the FedEx Cup was $100 million, with $25 million going to the winner and $7.5 million to second place. The bonus money is expected to be altered to reward season-long play as well as the significance of the FedEx Cup.

The Tour surveyed fans last year as part of its Fan Forward initiative and got considerable feedback on the FedEx Cup format. Players were also heavily involved in the issue.

“Our Fan Forward initiative has helped us evaluate each part of the PGA Tour season and today’s announcement is an important first step in the evaluation of our postseason,” commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. “The Player Advisory Council led a thorough process to respond to what our fans are asking for: the most competitive golf in the world, played for the highest stakes, in the most straightforward and engaging format.”

Rory McIlroy became the sixth man ever to achieve a career grand slam just a month ago, and came into the 2025 PGA Championship tied for favorite with eventual winner Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy has long dominated at Quail Hollow, and has won four times in PGA Tour competition there. This year, though, he looked strangely uncomfortable, ending the tournament tied for 47th place.

So, what changed?

There might be an easy answer to that. The biggest news that came out of the Championship was the reported disqualification of several attendees’ drivers, including McIlroy’s.

It’s not an uncommon occurrence. Driver faces are, naturally, optimized to the athlete’s swing, and that can push up against the regulations. After a number of high-speed swings, these faces can be warped past the acceptable thickness or even cracked. For McIlroy, the switch was likely a top factor in a difficult tournament; he did demonstrably worse following it, particularly struggling in the first round, where he shot a 3-over 74.

Even given the swap and the underperformance, though, McIlroy wouldn’t have been such a massive story if he had been willing to speak about it.

McIlroy declined four interview requests after and during the tournament, eventually departing Quail Hollow having done no media since his pre-tournament interview. This uncharacteristic rejection caused the driver story to balloon into controversy, taken as an admission of guilt or some turmoil beneath the surface.

Meanwhile, the other top competitor and the eventual champion, Scheffler, confirmed to the media that his driver was also among the disqualified ones. “We had a feeling that it was going to be coming because I’ve used that driver for over a year,” he said.

As the winner, the club switch was “no big deal” to Scheffler, and his transparency about it made that clear to the media as well. He did, however, point out his dissatisfactions with the testing strategies.

The current process sees only a third of the drivers examined, and the disqualifications are kept close to the vest, sparking the implication that they’re shameful. If there was more transparency on all ends about the process, players might have a better chance to acclimate to the new drivers.

“It’s a newer rule that we haven’t quite gotten right yet,” said Scheffler. “I think we have some stuff to figure out, get more robust and get even more strict. You can test guys every week if you want. I mean, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t.”

LONDONDERRY, NORTHERN IRELAND - JULY 06: Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland hits his second shot on the 13th hole during day one of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at Portstewart Golf Club on July 6, 2017 in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

Golfer Rory McIlroy told reporters at the RBC Canadian Open Wednesday that he was happy about the impending PGA merger with LIV Golf and the PGA European Tour. Though he didn’t like the thought of Saudi Arabian funding in the sport, he expects LIV to be absorbed by pre-existing tours and sees it as an improvement.

“I still hate LIV,” McIlroy said at the Oakdale Golf and Country Club. “Like, I hate LIV. I hope it goes away, and I would fully expect that it does. I think that’s where the distinction here is. This is the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and the PIF, very different from LIV.”

Since the formation of LIV in 2021, McIlroy has been one of the most outspoken opponents of the new tour, which offered exorbitant contracts to top golfers through money provided by the Saudi Arabian government. Some have claimed that the tour was formed in an ongoing effort by the kingdom to sanitize its image on the international stage. Others have complained that the new tour disrupted the traditions and competitive nature of the sport.

McIlroy claims that prominent golfers, including Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, damaged the game by accepting exorbitant LIV contracts and should be punished for doing so.

“There still has to be consequences to actions,” McIlroy said. “The people that left the PGA Tour irreparably harmed this tour, started litigation against it. Like, we can’t just welcome them back in. That’s not going to happen.”

In a reportedly heated meeting between PGA officials and around 100 players, this issue surrounding defecting LIV players caused an intense debate. If these players, many of which were among the best on the PGA Tour previously, were allowed to return after the merger, many currently competing would be forced to the outskirts despite remaining loyal throughout the process.

Finer points concerning the merger are still being finalized, but most PGA Tour officials are expected to appoint the majority of authority roles in the new, unnamed tour, while the Saudi Public Investment Fund will oversee the merger and fund the venture.

Phil Mickelson Returns to PGA Tour at CareerBuilder Challenge

The PGA Tour filed a countersuit against LIV Golf and three players Wednesday, claiming that the Saudi Arabian organization offered “astronomical” salaries to players in order to convince them to breach their old contracts.

It is yet another lawsuit in an ongoing battle between the two tours.

The PGA’s countersuit is in response to a lawsuit filed by LIV and three players for antitrust violations. Responding to LIV players’ claims that the PGA abused its monopoly powers, the PGA responded in its new suit that LIV has “openly sought to damage the Tour’s business relationships with its members by inducing them to breach their contractual requirements, even going so far as to pay members’ legal fees to make breaching their contracts with Tour more enticing.”

The PGA has also claimed that the foundation of LIV is an attempt by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to mask the government’s human rights violations in an act of “sportswashing.”

The most recent round of legal action first began after the PGA attempted to punish players for breaching their contracts to join LIV. These converted players, most of whom accepted massive salaries, argue that they should be able to represent LIV and continue to appear in major events.

LIV’s desire to integrate with established golf organizations and tournaments is sensible, as it would allow the Saudi tour to shed its outsider status. At first, 11 LIV players were part of the original lawsuit, but eight, most recently Phil Mickelson, Hudson Swafford and Talor Gooch, asked to be removed.

The PGA seems insistent on maintaining the stigma around LIV, having lost a number of top golfers to the tour. Multiple golfers, like Tiger Woods, have also turned down LIV due to the Saudi government’s past transgressions.

Though legal actions may take some time to sort through, the resulting decisions could have a profound impact on the way the PGA addresses LIV defections in the future. In an unrelated story, the Department of Justice’s investigation into LIV’s operations is still ongoing.

Masters 2017 Round 2 Recap, Highlights, Leaderboard

Text messages between golfer Sergio Garcia and LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman were released  as part of the lawsuit filed by LIV golfers in response to the ban on LIV golfers from competing in PGA Tour events and majors.

In the messages, dating back to February, Garcia explains to Norman the PGA tour’s plan to eventually ban golfers. Garcia had initiated a conversation on February 11 saying, “I just wanted to see how things are going with the League, cause it seems like a lot of those guys that were loving it and excited about it last week, now are shi–ing in their pants.”

Norman replied saying, “Who are you referencing so I can run a check?”

When Garcia responded with the news that the PGA Tour told golfers that they’d be banned for life should they join LIV Golf, Norman explained that it was an empty threat.

“They cannot ban you for one day let alone life,” Norman replied. “It is a shallow threat. Ask them to put it in writing to you or any player. I bet they don’t. Happy for anyone to speak with our legal team to better understand they have no chance of enforcing.”

These texts exchanged in February came just months before the PGA Tour issued an indefinite suspension on LIV golfers in June.

This ban prompted a lawsuit from Phil Mickelson, Bryson Dechambeau and nine other golfers to file an intrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour, questioning the league’s authority to enact and enforce such a ban.

This also comes less than a month after the Department of Justice announced an investigation into the PGA Tour to see if they engaged in “anticompetitive behavior” with LIV Golf.

LIV Golf’s newest golfers are hearing criticism on all sides after joining its Invitational Series. Northern Irish golfer Graeme McDowell said that he continues to receive death threats and messages telling him to “go die” after he joined the Saudi-financed tour.

The newest tour is backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF), a fund run by chairman Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. Many golfers have been criticized for joining the tour, being portrayed as money-grabbing. McDowell had previously been asked about the idea of accepting money from the controversial Saudi Arabian regime, to which he replied that it was “incredibly polarizing.”

Bin Salman has been isolated due to his alleged involvement in approving the operation that led to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

When asked about the incident, McDowell attempted to separate the golf from the regime. “I think we all agree up here, take the Khashoggi situation; we all agree that’s reprehensible. Nobody is going to argue that fact,” he said. “But we are golfers. Speaking personally, I really feel like golf is a force of good in the world. I just try to be a great role model to kids. I know what the game of golf has taught me. I love using the game of golf as something to kind of help grow around the world. That’s pretty much what we’ve been for the last 20 years, being role models for kids and try to use this game, like I say, as a force of good really.”

LIV Golf faced heavy protest prior to their first U.S. event in Portland last week from 9/11 survivors and victims’ families.

“We are not politicians. I know you guys hate that expression, but we are really not, unfortunately. We are professional golfers. If Saudi Arabia wanted to use the game of golf as a way for them to get to where they want to be and they have the resources to accelerate that experience, I think we are proud to help them on that journey using the game of golf and the abilities that we have to help grow the sport and take them to where they want to be,” McDowell said.

McDowell won the US Open in 2010.

The LIV Golf International Series has poached yet another star golfer from the PGA Tour. Brooks Koepka will join the series and compete in LIV Golf events for the foreseeable future. Koepka is one of the higher-profile golfers to leave the PGA tour. LIV Golf is expected to announce his addition to the series in the coming days.

He is now the eighth Top 50 ranked player to sign with LIV Golf. Koepka was anticipated to participate in LIV’s upcoming event in Portland while he was still signed with the PGA Tour.

Tour commissioner Jay Moynahan had said that those slated to participate in the event without a conflicting-event release would face suspension. Other Top 50 players such as Bryson DeChambeau (30th) and Patrick Reed (38th) are also expected to compete in the event, but it is unclear if they plan to resign from the PGA Tour.

It was also rumored that 20th-ranked Abraham Ancer would also leave the PGA in favor of LIV as well as 4th-ranked golfer Collin Morikawa.

Morikawa tweeted out a statement denying those rumors expressing that he is “here to stay” with the PGA Tour.

Koepka is a four-time majors winner and was recently ranked number one in the world before a slew of injuries caused him to have a shaky finish at three majors this season, missing the cut at the Masters, and placing 55th in the PGA Championship and last week’s U.S. Open.

At the Open, Koepka waved off any questions about his rumored intention to join LIV Golf. “I’m here at the U.S. Open,” he said. “I’m ready to play the U.S. Open, and I think it kind of sucks, too, you are all throwing this black cloud over the U.S. Open. It’s one of my favorite events. I don’t know why you guys keep doing that. The more legs you give [LIV Golf], the more you keep talking about it.”

Moynahan is expected to speak with the media on Wednesday. It is unclear whether he will deal out punishment for the other golfers who have not been suspended. Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson have already been indefinitely suspended.

The first U.S.-based LIV Golf event will take place on June 30 in Portland.

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA - NOVEMBER 15: Dustin Johnson of the United States is awarded the Green Jacket by Masters champion Tiger Woods of the United States during the Green Jacket Ceremony after winning the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club on November 15, 2020 in Augusta, Georgia.

The PGA Tour lost one of its biggest stars on Tuesday as Dustin Johnson has officially resigned from the tour and will play in LIV Golf events and major championships in the future. The former Masters’ champ has made his decision effective immediately saying, “For right now, I’ve resigned my membership on the tour and I’m going to play [LIV] for now, that’s the plan,” Johnson said at a press conference for one of LIV’s events this week.

Johnson said that he had thought over his decision over the last six months and felt this was the best decision for him and his family. “At that time, I was committed to playing the PGA Tour,” Johnson said. “I’m very thankful for the PGA Tour and everything it’s done for me. I’ve done pretty well out there for the last 15 years. But this is something that was best for me and my family. It’s something exciting and something new.” This announcement comes as a surprise as Johnson previously stated in February that he was committed to the PGA Tour.

Saudi-financed LIV Golf International Series has poached a number of high-profile golfers from the PGA Tour. It is rumored that they offered Johnson around $125 million to join the upstart league. Johnson joins fellow golfers Kevin Na, Sergio Garcia, Branden Grace and Charl Schwartzel in their decisions to leave the PGA.

As for the upcoming major, Commissioner Jay Moynahan had released a statement saying that golfers could not golf in both leagues simultaneously, essentially barring LIV golfers from participating in major championships, however, Johnson’s 2017 U.S. Open win earned him a 10-year exemption into the competition while his 2020 Masters victory earned him a five-year exemption into both the Open Championship and PGA Championship. It is unclear whether or not the USGA will bar players from participating in the major championships at the time.

“I can’t answer for the majors, but hopefully they’re going to allow us to play, obviously I’m exempt for the majors, so I plan on playing unless I hear otherwise,” Johnson said regarding his plan.
Johnson has earned a total of $74.2 million during his 15-year tenure with the PGA Tour.

Tiger Woods has achieved numerous accolades with the PGA Tour, and now the golfing legend is opting to stay in with the PGA Tour despite an offer from the Saudi-backed LIV Golf league.

According to LIV Golf Investments CEO, Greg Norman, Woods turned down a huge offer to play in the league. The offer was, “mind-blowingly enormous, we’re talking about high nine digits,” Norman said. Despite the size of the offer, Woods said that he would not leave the PGA Tour amidst the exodus of star players from the PGA Tour to the new upstart league.

The LIV Golf International Series is a new league led by Norman, a former golf star who created the league to challenge the reign of the PGA Tour. The league has come with controversy as PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan announced that golfers can not golf in both leagues. Stars such as Phil Mickelson, Kevin Na and Dustin Johnson have already announced their departures from the PGA Tour in favor of playing in the new league. According to reports, Johnson was given a sign-on fee of about $125 million when he committed to play for the LIV.

Woods on the other hand has stood firm in his stance on the PGA Tour and reacted to the star power such as Mickelson leaving the Tour, “Phil [Mickelson] has said some things that I think a lot of us who are committed to the tour and committed to the legacy of the tour have pushed back against. But I think that some of his views on how the tour could be run, should be run, been a lot of disagreement there.”

Woods will continue his rehab from injury and has stated that he will not participate in the upcoming U.S. Open, but rather get prepared for the Open Championship in July. He remains supportive of the PGA Tour and its competitions. “I believe in major championships,” he said. “I believe in big events and comparisons to historical figures of the past. There’s plenty of money out there. The Tour is growing. But it’s just like any other sport. It’s like tennis. You have to go out there and earn it. You’ve got to go out there and play for it. We have the opportunity to go ahead and do it. It’s just not guaranteed up front.”

Beam me up, Scottie. Or, at the very least, let me try on your green jacket!

World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler made short work of the final three rounds of the 2022 Masters to win his first major on a 10-under (278) finish with a record $2.7 million payout. It was his fourth PGA Tour win this season—all of which have come in the last 57 days—after failing to win the first 70 PGA events of his career.

Tiger Woods came in lower on the leaderboard but his comeback was still considered a success after his major car crash last year.

He joins Ian Woosnam (1991), Fred Couples (1992),  Woods (2001, 2002) and Dustin Johnson (2020) as the only golfers to enter the Masters ranked 1 in the world and win.

Scheffler shot a 69 in Round 1 and 67, the second day for a five-stroke lead. A 71 on Saturday turned out to be a bump in the road, though, as he sank a three-foot double-bogey putt to finish his improbable day.

The hecklers have moved on to golf from basketball, it seems.

This time it was Brooks Koepka getting into it with a “fan” after last Saturday’s action of the World Golf Championships (WGC)-Dell Technologies Match Play tournament in Austin, Texas.

Video shows the golfer grabbing a man’s phone after he beat world number one, Jon Rahm. The fan is filming incredibly close to the 28-year-old golfer’s face and tries to chat him up. Koepka then rips the phone away and says, “Get it out of my face, man! Get it out of my face!”

The phone was immediately returned, but Koepka went on to lose in the quarterfinals to Dustin Johnson on Sunday.

The fan was a good sport about it and declined to press charges.

The PGA Tour got a bit stronger over the weekend, as both Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau released statements saying they’re both sticking with the tour and eschewing the much-ballyhooed rival Saudi Arabia-backed Super Golf League (SGL).

“While there has been a lot of speculation surrounding my support for another tour, I want to make it very clear that as long as the best players in the world are playing the PGA Tour, so will I,” DeChambeau wrote. “As of now, I am focused on getting myself healthy and competing again soon. I appreciate all the support.”

The two, as well as golf legend Phil Mickelson, have been rumored to be some top names to potentially join the SGL. The league says it’s willing to pay enormous amounts of guaranteed money to attract some of golf’s biggest names to compete with the PGA Tour.

“Over the past several months, there has been a great deal of speculation about an alternative tour; much of which seems to have included me and my future in professional golf,” Johnson said. “I feel it is now time to put such speculation to rest. I am fully committed to the PGA Tour. I am grateful for the opportunity to play the best tour in the world and for all it has provided me and my family.”

Mickelson recently has been dominating SGL headlines, saying that he’s spearheading the proposed league and noting how he hopes to use the rival league as leverage over the Tour.

The PGA Tour responded by increasing official prize money to $427 million, upping its FedEx Cup bonus money to $75 million, and creating additional programs that will pay millions more. The PGA Tour will pay out more than $838 million in player comprehensive earnings this season.

Phil Mickelson Leads at British Open 2016

Phil Mickelson apologized Tuesday for comments about the Saudis and a proposed super league – harsh words that “Lefty” says were off the record and not meant to be shared publicly.

“It was reckless, I offended people, and I am deeply sorry for my choice of words,” he said.

Nearly coming at the same time as Mickelson’s statement, KPMG became the first of his sponsors to cut ties, a decision the company said was mutual.

“We wish him the best,” KPMG said in a statement.

Mickelson said of his November words to author and golf writer Alan Shipnuck, “I’m beyond disappointed and will make every effort to self-reflect and learn from this.”

Mickelson told Shipnuck, who’s authoring a biography about Mickelson due out in May, that the Saudis behind a proposed breakaway rival league were “scary mother—ers to get involved with,” though it’s worth it to get involved with them.

“We know they killed (Washington Post columnist Jamal) Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay,” he said. “Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates.”

“Although it doesn’t look this way now given my recent comments,” Mickelson said he always puts the interests of golf first.

“There is the problem of off-record comments being shared out of context and without my consent,” he said. “But the bigger issue is that I used words I sincerely regret that do not reflect my true feelings or intentions.”

Shipnuck wrote that “not once did he say our conversation was off-the-record or on background or just between us or anything remotely like that. He simply opened a vein.” He tweeted Tuesday that Mickelson’s claims he spoke off the record were “completely false.”

Mickelson’s apologies made no mention of the PGA Tour or its commissioner Jay Monahan, which he referred to as a “dictatorship” in the interview. Mickelson added that he and three top players had paid attorneys to write the operating agreement of a rival league.

MAMARONECK, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 20: Bryson DeChambeau of the United States kisses the championship trophy in celebration after winning the 120th U.S. Open Championship on September 20, 2020 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.

Last year on the 17th green at Waialae Country Club was the last—and only—time Kevin Na opened a green-reading book on the golf course.

It was there that he needed a birdie-eagle finish to shoot 59 in the third round of the Sony Open. However, after reading the green for his 10-footer, he glanced at the book, adjusted his read, took the shot, and missed.

He wound up winning the tournament with a 61, but nuts to the book, he thought.

“It didn’t work out too well,” Na recalled Thursday, “so that was the last time I saw it.”

Na’s longtime caddie, Kenny Harms, used to use the book to verify his initial read before the PGA Tour cracked down on green-reading materials.

The opening round of the Sentry Tournament of Champions marked the first day of the Tour’s new rule—which went into effect January 1—which says players and caddies are only allowed to use committee-approved books.

The rule aims to ensure that reading putts was the product of skill, judgment, and feel, in addition to quality preparation. Handwritten notes will be allowed, though no devices can be used to obtain data.

“I probably bury my head in them too much as it is,” said Joel Dahmen. “I don’t use them at home and I putt ok, so there’s no real reason to have them out here for me anyway.”

Collin Morikawa and Brooks Koepka noted they used books to read putts but also to identify where to land approach shots given the green’s slopes and contours.

“It’s a little more work for the caddie on Tuesday and Wednesday for them to get the slopes and the grain out there,” Dahmen said.

Perhaps the player who most affected by the rule is the notoriously data-driven Bryson DeChambeau, who ranked as a top-35 putter on Tour in each of the past four seasons but does not yet own a top-10 finish at the Masters—the only tournament that doesn’t permit the use of green books.

“At the end of the day, I still go based off of my intuition most of the time,” DeChambeau said. “I look at something, ‘ok, I think it looks a little like this.’ The times where I’ve putted best have been where my intuition is matched up with reality, and what it’s actually doing because sometimes (the books) can be wrong.”

There’s no better story this week than Tiger Woods‘ return to the golf course at the PNC Championship in Orlando with his 12-year-old son, Charlie Woods. The PNC Championship provides the chance for 20 Major Champions to team up with a member of their family to play golf.

Charlie proved to be the spitting image of his famous father both in looks and in mannerisms. Both wore Woods’ signature red polo and Charlie even has down the signature club twirl.

When Woods got into a bad car crash last February, there was no guarantee he would play golf again.

“The fact that I’m able to have this opportunity this year, even a couple of weeks ago we didn’t really know whether or not I would be doing this, but here we are,” Woods said. “And we had just the best time ever, and I just wish I could have walked down the fairways with him and been side by side with him the entire time like we were last year.”

Woods and Charlie came in second, just two shots behind John Daly and his son, John Daly II, who is a freshman on the University of Arkansas golf team.

Team Woods combined to shoot 15-under 57, including 11 consecutive birdies, an eagle and four pars.

Woods has not put a timeline on his return to the PGA Tour.

“I like competing,” Woods said. “I’m not going to play a full schedule ever again. I’m going to have to pick and choose what events, and even then, my body might not cooperate with that. So I don’t know how many events I’m going to be playing in. And it’s going to be up to training sessions, practice sessions, recovery tactics, all those different things to be able to do this again because it didn’t look good there for a while about it.”

Harris English closed out an emphatic run at the Travelers Championship, shooting a 5-under 65 en route to a first-place finish.

English concluded his final round with six birdies, including an eye-popping 28-foot finish on the 18th hole. English then went to overtime with Kramer Hickok, which was a back-and-forth battle. English finally put Hickok away on the eighth hole in overtime.

The victory has large implications for the FedExCup standings, as the 500 points rewarded to English based on his victory push him to number two. The $1.3 million prize wasn’t a negative addition to the FedExCup points either. Hickok moved up to number 69 in the FedExCup rankings.

English started off slow, finishing the first two rounds of the Travelers Championship in fifteenth place. He turned on the heat in the third round, moving up to sixth place (shooting a cumulative -3) before eventually taking first.

English has had a strong 2021 PGA Tour season, winning one other event (the Sentry Tournament of Champions) and placing in the top-10 of tournaments five times.

English’s world ranking is now at 14, up 5 spots from 19.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - DECEMBER 15: Playing Captain Tiger Woods and the United States team celebrate with the cup after they defeated the International team 16-14 during Sunday Singles matches on day four of the 2019 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Course on December 15, 2019 in Melbourne, Australia.

Those who love golf know that Tiger Woods would always wear his trademark red and black gear on the final days of tournaments. But, since Woods couldn’t participate at the WGC-Workday Championship in Bradenton, Florida, others followed Tiger’s tradition.

Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jason Day, along with other golfers, were seen wearing red and black in honor of Woods. Woods was not participating because he was involved in a car crash in Los Angeles earlier this week.

Many of the players, along with the PGA Tour’s official Twitter account, posted about the golfers that were showing their support for Tiger by wearing his signature outfit.

Woods noticed the gesture and conveyed his appreciation to the other golfers on Twitter in his first personal statement since his accident.

“It is hard to explain how touching today was when I turned on the tv and saw all the red shirts. To every golfer and every fan, you are truly helping me get through this tough time,” Woods said.

On Sunday, at the Gainbridge LBPA event led by Annika Sorenstam in Orlando, FL, many female golfers also sported Woods’ black pants and red shirt combination to show their support, per the LPGA official Twitter account.

In the accident, Woods suffered multiple fractures to his leg and a shattered ankle. However, the 45-year old is still in “good spirits.”
