After a disastrous 3-14 season, the Las Vegas Raiders will be looking in a new direction for coaching.

Future football hall of famer Pete Carroll was signed by the Raiders last offseason to give them some veteran leadership. His most notable stint was with the Seahawks from 2010 to 2023. He made the playoffs in 10 of his 14 seasons, including a Super Bowl XLVIII title. After missing the playoffs in 2023, the Seahawks and Carroll mutually agreed to part ways.

>SLIDESHOW: 50 MOST-INFAMOUS ATHLETE MUGSHOTS & THE STORIES BEHIND THEM!

After a season off in 2024, Carroll returned to the NFL with the Raiders in 2025. Carroll was the oldest coach in NFL history, turning 74 during the Raiders’ week 2 game.

The Raiders’ poor record is a product of poor roster building and outdated coaching.

The Raiders let several defensive veterans like Tre’von Moehrig, Robert Spillane and Nate Hobbs walk. Instead, they focused on offensive improvements, trading for Geno Smith and drafting Ashton Jeanty. Smith, in particular, didn’t work out, as he threw 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

Carroll has generally relied on veterans to lead the rosters. He likes to let the players build the team culture.

However, since the Raiders lost several veterans in the offseason, they needed to rely on Carroll.

Although Carroll prevented a complete collapse of the locker room, it was pretty clear he couldn’t create a culture either. His game management was very old-school, with conservative fourth-down decisions, playing for field position, and trusting the defense to hold the line.

Overall, Carroll was hired to build the roster from scratch. In reality, he’s best suited to join a roster that’s already got its core, but needs a coach who allows them to be the best version of themselves.

As of now, it’s unclear if Carroll will get another job in the NFL, but if a playoff team loses earlier than expected, they might give the coaching legend a call.

Pete Carroll, the Super Bowl-winning coach of the Seattle Seahawks, has finalized a deal to become the next head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. A return to the NFL after many thought his head-coaching career had ended.

Carroll and the Raiders agreed on a three-year contract with a fourth-year option. He returns to the sidelines in Las Vegas after stepping away from the Seahawks at the end of the 2023 season.

Since moving from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020, the Raiders have cycled through four head coaches, including interims, with Carroll becoming the fifth. He now joins a list of coaches under Mark Davis‘ ownership stretching back to 2011, totaling nine when interims are included. The group features Hue JacksonDennis AllenTony Sparano, Jack Del RioJon GrudenRich BisacciaJosh McDaniels and Antonio Pierce

Carroll, the most successful coach in Seahawks history, now faces the challenge of rebuilding the Raiders. His career record of 170-120-1 across stints with the Seahawks, Patriots, and Jets, along with his success at USC and Seattle in similar rebuilds, suggests that he has the tools to turn the team around.

Carroll’s hiring comes with a touch of irony for Raiders minority owner Tom Brady

Brady, heavily involved in the coaching search, defeated Carroll’s Seahawks on Feb. 1, 2015, to claim one of his seven Super Bowl titles.

When the regular season begins, Carroll will become the oldest head coach in NFL history, turning 74 in September. He will break the previous mark of 73 set by Romeo Crennel during his stint as interim head coach of the Texans.

The Raiders’ last playoff win came after their 2002 Super Bowl appearance. It’s up to Carroll to help them break that dry spell.

The NFL is reportedly considering disciplinary action against Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams after the star defender screamed at a doctor on the sideline while he was being evaluated for a concussion. Adams was making his first start after a season-ending injury in 2022 but had to exit the game early. He is now in concussion protocol.

Adams apologized on Twitter after the incident, thanking the doctor for assisting him despite his outburst.

“First and foremost, I want to apologize to the OG. You did everything right when you realized I was concussed, I apologize for any negative energy I brought your way,” Adams said. “Watching the replay, I am thankful for your patience knowing I wasn’t myself in that moment. You’re a real one and you serve a great purpose that benefits the NFL and so many players. Prioritizing player’s health is essential. Much respect to you!”

Though Adams apologized for his actions, the league could still punish him for berating medical personnel, who he also seemed to threaten to the point that he had to be held back on the sidelines. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the league was considering serving Adams with a fine, though opponents to this measure argue that Adams was not in a sound state of mind. Some have even pointed at the NFL’s own classification of concussions, which specifically cites uncharacteristic aggression and agitation as key symptoms.

Adams last played for the Seahawks in Week 1 of the 2022 season, when he suffered a torn quad tendon that required surgery to repair. In the first quarter of his return game Monday night, he seemed to sustain the concussion while attempting to tackle Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. Adams dove at Jones’ knees and hit him headfirst. He appeared disoriented after the play and was escorted off the field. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said that he expects Adams to recover and plans to continue using him as a key part of the team’s defense going forward.

Los Angeles Rams linebacker Bobby Wagner told reporters Wednesday that he’s excited for the team’s Week 18 matchup in Seattle against the Seahawks, his old team. Wagner said that he felt as though the Seahawks “gave up” on him before his release in March.

“I’m pretty sure you’ve played your family before in basketball, golf or whatever,” Wagner said. “When you play your friend, y’all might talk a little trash. It is what it is, but when you’re playing your family member that knows your deepest, darkest secrets and knows exactly what to say to you to make you feel a certain type of way, and also you’re playing the organization that you feel gave up on you, it was warranted, to be honest.”

Officials within the Seahawks organization, including GM John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll, admitted to mishandling Wagner’s release. Though the team informed him before ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news, the linebacker reportedly knew for weeks that the organization was favoring other players at his position.

“I wish I could have handled things better in that regard from a communication standpoint,” Schneider said in March. “I owe it to him. The organization owes it to him.”

Soon after his release, Wagner signed a five-year, $65 million contract with the Rams, and though the team has struggled in 2022, he has become a key contributor on defense. With 133 tackles, he leads the team in the category and ranks 14th in the league overall.

With an 8-8 record going into Week 18, the Seahawks can advance to the playoffs with a win over the Rams, who have been statistically eliminated from contention for weeks. But for Wagner, spoiling his old team’s postseason chances is sufficient motivation.

“It’s a lot of emotions, man, to be honest,” Wagner said. “But I’m a master of my emotions. It’s going into a stadium I’ve been in thousands of times, played in hundreds of times, and to be in a position to spoil their playoff hopes is always a good position, something worth playing for. It will be fun to go back there, be back in front of those fans.”

Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll encouraged the NFL to look into the injury risks of different playing surfaces following a game between the Seahawks and Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium.

During the contest on artificial turf, both teams lost players to knee injuries on unrelated noncontact plays.

After Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf and Chargers cornerback J.C. Jackson exited the game early with injuries, Carroll was adamant that league officials closely examine the effects of playing surfaces on players’ safety.

“I think we definitely need to look at this really seriously in the offseason again,” Carroll said when asked about the grass-turf debate. “It’s been a discussion before. We’ve got to do what’s right, and we’ve got to do what’s safest for the players and we’ve got to make those choices. I would pound on the drum for that.”

Like the Seahawks’ home venue, Lumen Field, SoFi Stadium uses artificial turf. The Chargers and Los Angeles Rams both play home games there, but multiple findings suggest that the surface is more dangerous than grass.

In 2020, NFLPA President J.C. Tretter advocated for a full transition to grass fields, pointing to evidence that players were 28% more likely to suffer lower extremity injuries on noncontact plays over a six-year period.

“The data stands out,” Tretter said at the time. “Those numbers are staggering, the difference in injury rate between turf and natural grass. It’s possible to get grass in every location, and it’s about pushing for that. We all should be working toward the safest style of play.”

The advantages of using artificial turf are obvious, as the surface remains unaltered by inclement weather and does not require as much care in drier, hotter climates. It has also improved since Astroturf was first implemented in the 1970s, but dangers still exist that have led many to call for the return of grass throughout the league.

While Metcalf has already reported that he is recovering well from his injury, Jackson’s knee injury was revealed to be a ruptured patellar tendon after the game. He will miss the rest of the season.

Running back Chris Carson, 27, is planning to retire from the NFL. After missing most of the 2021 season with a neck injury, Carson was unable to pass a physical examination during the offseason and was released by the Seahawks. In five seasons with Seattle, he never managed to play a full season.

For now, Carson will not officially announce his retirement in the hopes that his condition improves dramatically in the near future. The Seahawks’ decision to release Carson, however, leaves him without a solid path forward.

Since debuting in 2017, the running back’s potential was always evident on the field, but multiple injuries sidelined him at inopportune times. Following a 2018 season in which he started in 14 games and rushed for 1,151 yards and nine touchdowns, Carson continued to perform at a high level in 2019 until a hip injury ended his season in Week 16. He also missed more time in 2020 with a foot sprain.

Reports emerged soon after Carson’s most recent injury that he wasn’t recovering well, leading to season-ending neck surgery in November. Though he remained optimistic that he could return to action in 2022, a failed physical designation Tuesday led to his release. He will likely receive millions of dollars through injury protection clauses in the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement.

Though his career will likely end prematurely, Carson’s journey to professional football remains one of perseverance. Without any offers to play Division I football out of high school, he accepted an offer to play at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas. After two years at Butler, he transferred to Oklahoma State University and made the most of his playing time as a transfer player.

In the 2017 Draft, the Seahawks selected Carson with the 249th overall pick in the seventh round. His physical style of play undoubtedly appealed to Head Coach Pete Carroll, who was still looking for a replacement for star running back Marshawn Lynch. Carson thrived in a similar role.

In the NFL, Carson started in 48 games for the Seahawks in five seasons, rushing for 3,502 career yards and 24 touchdowns. Due in part to his limited availability, Carson was never a Pro Bowler but was nevertheless an integral part of the Seahawks organization, helping the team reach three straight postseasons.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll went on a 10-minute rant at last week’s league meeting about the NFL’s hiring of minorities—or lack thereof.

During a meeting between GMs and coaches in Palm Beach, he said that the hiring of minority candidates won’t happen until the owners accept that there are qualified candidates who are culturally different.

The comments came on the heels of the announcement that all 32 teams must hire a minority offensive assistant coach this season.

The new policy states that a coach can be “a female or a member of an ethnic or racial minority” and will be paid from a league-wide fund.

Russell Wilson Calls for Return of Seattle SuperSonics

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson left Thursday night’s game against the Los Angeles Rams after suffering a middle finger injury and is expected to miss six weeks of action.

Wilson banged his throwing hand against Aaron Donald‘s arm on a third-quarter incompletion, rupturing his finger tendon in the process, requiring him to leave the game a couple possessions later.

Wilson finished the game going 11-of-16 for 152 yards, a TD and an interception. He was replaced early in the fourth quarter by Geno Smith, who completed 10-of-17 passes for 131 yards, throwing a touchdown and a pick.

Despite the backup QB’s efforts, the Seahawks ultimately lost the game 26-17.

After the game, head coach Pete Carroll appeared cautiously optimistic while answering to the media about Wilson’s predicament.

“There is a lot of work to be done in assessing all of that,” Carroll said. “Russell is one of the great healers of all time, and he’ll do whatever he can to get back as soon as absolutely possible.”

“He wasn’t able to hold on to the football the way he needed to, to throw it, because we were going to throw the ball, and we needed to throw it all over the place,” he said. “We didn’t know what he would be able to do. He was just unsure… If he could have, he would have.”

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Wilson had surgery on his finger today, which included the use of screws for stabilization.

Up to this point, Wilson had never missed a single start thus far in his illustrious NFL career.

The Seattle Seahawks have made another contract offer to Pro Bowl Safety Jamal Adams. The team now awaits Adamas’ response on whether he will accept or decline the latest contract offer.

Adams is in line for an extension that would make him the league’s highest-paid safety, topping the $15.25 million-per-year average of the Denver Broncos’ Justin Simmons. Seattle and Adams’ agent began negotiating early in the offseason and continued to do so through the start of training camp until a recent period of inaction.

Left tackle Duane Brown is currently not on the Seahawks’ priority for a contract extension as the team isn’t interested in offering the 14-year veteran a new deal.

“Nothing new is happening with that at this point,” Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said when asked if an extension for Brown is under discussion or not.

Both Adams and Brown reported to training camp but have not participated in practice because of their unsettled contract situations. Both players remained spectators Tuesday for Seattle’s tenth practice.

Despite not practicing, Admas was engaging and in good spirits as he watched from the sideline. The Pro Bowler offered instructions to younger defensive backs and was engaged with his teammates and fans in attendance.

While Seattle is not interested in Brown, star quarterback Russell Wilson is. A source confirmed that Wilson told the team he is willing to move money around to clear cap room for extensions for both Adams and Brown.

On Sunday, Wilson called Brown’s absence “pretty significant” and added, “We’ve got to figure that out because we need Duane Brown.”

Former NFL quarterback Tarvaris Jackson died Sunday night after he was involved in a car crash in Alabama. He was 36 years old. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Jackson’s accident occurred when his 2012 Cheverolet Camaro “left the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned.” He was then transferred to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Jackson’s former coach during his four-year stint with the Seahawks, Pete Carroll, reacted to the news on social media offering his condolences. Former teammates also expressed their grief on Twitter, including the Minnesota Vikings, the team Jackson spent the first five years of his career with:

Jackson was originally drafted 64th overall in 2006 by the Vikings. He was utilized as a backup for most of his career in Minnesota, but started 21 regular season games and one playoff game. He later joined Seattle in 2011 and started all 16 games that season, the longest stretch in his career. In 59 career games, Jackson compiled 7,263 passing yards and 39 touchdowns. He was working as a quarterbacks’ coach at Tennessee state before his death and is survived by his wife, Lakitta, and three children, Tarvaris, Takayla and Tyson.

Former Seahawks‘ running back Marshawn Lynch was reportedly meeting with the team in Seattle Monday to discuss reuniting with a team he left in 2015. By the afternoon, it was announced that Lynch would return for this season only.

Head coach Pete Carroll sat down for an interview on 710 ESPN in Seattle and claimed, “”We’re going to give him a really good chance to come back and play for us.” Carroll also mentioned that he has kept in contact with Lynch, which could be a strong reason why they would consider bringing him back.

“He’s an extraordinary individual… I’m hoping for him — he loves this city and this team,” Carroll told 710 ESPN.  The Seahawks are 11-4, one game behind the division leading 49ers who they play next week at home. Besides those two teams, the Packers and Saints are also fighting for the top two playoff spots in the NFC.

Seattle really needs him right now considering their current lack of healthy running backs. C.J. Prosise is out with a broken arm and Chris Carson suffered a hip injury Sunday against the Cardinals. Both players are out for the rest of the season. Rashad Penny has already been ruled out for the rest of 2019 with a torn ACL he suffered two weeks ago making Travis Homer the only back on the roster.

Lynch became a household name for the Seahawks after he was traded from Buffalo. He made the Pro Bowl four times while in Seattle and helped the team win Super Bowl 48. He originally retired from the team in 2016 after only seven games played that season. Originally from Oakland, the Raiders were able to lure him out of retirement in April 2017 when the Seahawks, who controlled his rights, traded him there.

He lasted two seasons in the silver and black compiling 1,267 yards and ten touchdowns on 290 carries. He also had 35 catches for 235 yards.

The man known as “Beast Mode” is now 33 years old, but he may be the last resort available at this stage of the season.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - DECEMBER 08: Defensive back Quandre Diggs #37 of the Seattle Seahawks celebrates after intercepting a pass in the third quarter of the game against the Los Angeles Rams at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on December 08, 2019 in Los Angeles, California.

Seattle had their five-game winning streak snapped on Sunday by the Rams in Los Angeles by the score of 28-12.

Newly acquired safety Quandre Diggs played well in his third game with Seattle intercepting Jared Goff twice in the game including a pick six return for 55 yards. Diggs was surprisingly traded by Detroit for a fifth round pick four weeks ago. He had just signed a three-year extension and was one of the team’s captains.

“He helps others. Guys around him play better,” Seattle Head Coach Pete Carroll said.

Running back Rashad Penny left the game on Seattle’s first drive and was later diagnosed with a sprained ACL. “We don’t know how serious it is, but it’s significant,” Carroll told ESPN.

Penny had just caught a screen pass from Russell Wilson for 16 yards before getting tripped up. Penny is usually second string behind Chris Carson, but his usage rate has picked up the last couple of games rivaling Carson in snaps over the last two games, 65-70. He had a career-high in yards with 129 and a touchdown against Philadelphia two weeks ago and followed that up with two touchdowns last week against Minnesota. Carrying the ball 14 and 15 times in those match-ups were both career highs.

“Well obviously it’s disappointing losing Penny. I feel for him. He’s such a great competitor. He’s been tremendous the past several weeks, so that’s just unfortunate. It’s part of the game unfortunately. I got to talk to him afterward and he had his head up, he’s looking forward to where he’s going next and just fighting through the rehab of it all and we’ll be right there with him, but yeah, it was tough when you lose one of your key players — a guy that you love to play with like Penny. He’s been playing good football, too, for us, but Chris did well tonight. He made some key runs. Made some nice plays, some nice catches and stuff like that, so I thought Chris played well,” Wilson told ESPN.

Penny was a first round draft pick by the Seahawks in 2018, but his playing time was limited behind Carson who just surpassed 1,000 yards rushing in last night’s game. This makes Carson the first Seahawks running back since Marshawn Lynch to rush for over 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons.

“To be honest, I wasn’t even thinking about it. A couple players came up and congratulated me, but on a night like this, you lose one of your close friends, you don’t get the win, I don’t really pay too much [notice],” said Carson.

Seattle is 10-3 and one game below the NFC West leaders, San Francisco.

Recently injured Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett is going to be fine in the long term, coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday.

In a radio interview on 710 ESPN Seattle Tuesday morning, Carroll said he is not worried about Lockett. The 27-year-old Pro Bowler sustained a serious leg injury in Monday night’s 27-24 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

“He should be ok,” Carroll said of Lockett. “It shouldn’t be a big problem going forward.… There’s concern there could be some complications when you have something like that.”

Following Seattle’s win, Carroll had initially stated he was concerned by the swelling that a contusion in Locket’s lower left leg appeared to cause. The wideout was taken to a local hospital after the injury to his shin. However, it was not immediately apparent whether Lockett underwent surgery. Lockett’s injury is particularly worrisome because he is enjoying a standout season. Thus far, he has logged a career-high 62 receptions for 793 yards and six touchdowns. Lockett is tied for fourth in the league in catches and is fifth in total receiving yards.

The 8-2 Seahawks have a bye for Week 11, so Lockett may not end up missing any games. Seattle also suffered another offensive loss on Monday night, as tight end Luke Wilson sustained a hamstring injury. However, Carroll said he wasn’t worried about Wilson’s long-term health, either.

Should Seattle miss Lockett long-term for any reason, it could also turn to wide receiver Josh Gordon, who claimed the Pro Bowler off waivers after the New England Patriots released him.

The Seahawks next play the Eagles in Philadelphia on Nov. 24.

Former Seattle Seahawk and current Baltimore Ravens safety Earl Thomas became widely talked about following a broken left leg he suffered against the Arizona Cardinals last September while with the Seahawks for flipping off Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll while being carted off the field. 10 months later, Thomas stands by his decision.

“I don’t regret my decision,” Thomas told ESPN’s Josina Anderson. “If my teammates felt like it was toward them, I regret that part. But I don’t regret doing that to Pete.”

Since the incident took place, Carroll and Thomas have not spoken according to Thomas. Carroll, however, harbors no ill will towards Thomas.

“People that are criticizing whatever happened don’t understand,” Carroll said. “This was an earth-shattering moment for a kid. He’s trying to play this game he loves, and all of sudden this happens again. He knew exactly what happened to him, so he went right to what it’s going to take to get back.”

After signing a four-year, $55 million deal with the Ravens in March, Thomas said this about his time with the Seahawks being all but over following the gesture.

“I think my time just ran out,” Thomas said. “Pete and the front office didn’t value me like they used to, and I just talked to Coach Carroll, and he was saying how he was trying to get me in the plans of getting a new contract. But I got hurt the next week. I think I hurt myself too by my actions getting carted off the field.”

The relationship between the Seahawks and Thomas began to sour the last offseason when Thomas skipped out on minicamp, training camp, and the preseason while he and the Seahawks were in the middle of a contract dispute. When Thomas broke his leg not even one month into the season, the soured relationship became expired.

“We got to walk with each other the rest of our lives because we won a Super Bowl together,” Thomas said. “But they’ll love you one minute and then hate you the next. That was our relationship.”

Pete Caroll said he believes the big changes the Seattle Seahawks have undertaken this offseason are an effective way to re-establish the competitive culture the head coach likes.

Seahawks offseason roster changes news

The Seahawks missed the playoffs for the first time since 2012 last year. Carroll and general manager John Schneider decided to part ways with embattled offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, defensive coordinator Kris Richard and highly-regarded offensive line coach Tom Cable.

“I felt it was time,” Carroll said Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine. “I wanted to challenge the opportunity to get better. It comes back to competing and trying to get better.”

Carroll quickly added that he did not blame the leaving coaches for the team’s fall-of in 2017. He also said he refuses to keep the same approach to football each year, and believes it is always necessary to adapt to the circumstances.

Tight end Jimmy Graham and defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson are potential free agents. Former Pro Bowlers safety Kam Chancellor and Cliff Avril are still trying to assess whether they can play again following severe neck injuries last season. Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman is also recovering from serious injuries.

Carroll said Sherman recently underwent a second, more minor cleanup procedure on his other Achilles tendon. The coach refused to reveal whether the team has discussed trading the All-Pro defenseman.

Carroll simply said regarding Sherman, “it’s the time of year where there are conversations in all directions.”

Seattle is also closely monitoring running back Chris Carson, a rookie who sustained a season-ending ankle injury in an impressive season.

Left tackle George Fant is also still recovering from ACL surgery.

The Seahawks also have to address their salary cap situation. Defensive lineman Michael Bennett — who is now 32 — is due to count $6.65 million against the salary cap.

Caroll also deflected a question on Thursday regarding whether he would support Russell Wilson getting at-bats in a spring training game. However, the coach said it is “awesome” that his quarterback is practicing with the New York Yankees in Florida.

Wilson performed well in his first MLB at-bat this week, hitting six homers. He called the opportunity to play baseball a dream come true.

Pete Carroll revealed Monday that the Seattle Seahawks are including Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III in their options for backup quarterbacks.

Pete Carroll Says Seahawks Considering Colin Kaepernick, RGIII for backup QB

The Seahawks coach announced during an appearance on 710 ESPN Seattle’s “Brock and Salk” show that the team is seeking to add competition behind Russell Wilson. When asked if Kaepernick and RGIII were among the passers the team was considering, Carroll said his squad is contemplating all options.

“We’re looking at everybody. We really are,” Carroll said. “We’ve been tracking everything that’s going on, and we’ve got cap and roster issues and stuff like that that we’re still trying to manage properly. But quite frankly, yes, we are looking at all those guys.”

Griffin hasn’t been in the news much since he was released by Cleveland earlier this offseason, while Kaepernick, who previously served as backup QB for the San Francisco 49ers, has also become a free agent and has been shunned by nearly every NFL team for doing things like protesting the national anthem by kneeling before games. Multiple Seahawks players, including Doug Baldwin, Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril and Jeremy Lane supported Kaepernick’s flag and anthem protest and even launched their own rebukes to take a stand against racial injustice and oppression of minorities.

In 12 games last season, Kaepernick completed 59.2 percent of his passes and threw 16 touchdowns with four interceptions.

Wilson has yet to miss a start in his NFL career, although he sustained three different injuries in 2016. Trevone Boykin, who signed with Seattle as an undrafted free agent in 2016, served as Wilson’s backup last year and was expected to do this again next season.

However, Boykin was arrested on misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and public intoxication in March. He was then arrested for potentially violating his probation due to the same incident.

In the 49ers’ Week 17 finale against the Seahawks last season, Kapernick went 17-for-22 for 215 yards and a touchdown.

Last week, Kaepernick’s adviser claimed that three teams were interested in the quarterback, although Kapernick’s girlfriend Nessa said on Twitter that she had doubts about the adviser’s allegations because she said the former 49ers star would have known about the teams’ interest.

Griffin had a terrible season with the Browns, who finished 1-15. The QB played only five games and recorded two touchdown passes and three interceptions.

Super-Bowl-XLIX-Breaks-Record-Ratings

We’re here to confirm what you already know: the Seattle Seahawks’ play call on 2nd and goal in the final minute was awful. Historically awful.

Down 4, the Seahawks needed a touchdown to regain the lead over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. They drove down the field thanks to the arm of quarterback Russell Wilson (and some spectacular theatrics by receiver Jermaine Kearse) to get within striking distance. And on first down, star running back Marshawn Lynch had one of his patented tough runs to gain 4 yards and put them a yard from a second straight Super Bowl.

So what do the Seahawks call? A slant route on the goal line that forces Wilson to throw the ball into heavy coverage. And what happens? A Malcolm Butler interception to bring the Patriots back to Super Bowl glory and end the Seahawks’ dreams of a dynasty.

While Wilson could’ve made a better decision, it’s clear that the majority of the blame has to be placed on the Seattle Seahawks’ coaching staff. They claim that they ran the play to save some clock. While Seattle did fumble around with their two timeouts called on the final drive, they still had plenty of time left if 2nd down didn’t result in a touchdown with their timeout in hand. And with New England seemingly giving up on trying to keep some clock for themselves if Seattle scored, willingly allowing the clock to go down without using any of their timeouts, Seattle didn’t have to worry too much about Tom Brady marching down 80 yards to come up with a miracle comeback.

Logic says to use your defense-crushing running back in Lynch, who just powered his way to a big gain, and score the touchdown to go up. Logic also says to not go into the shotgun when you’re at the one yard line. And logic says that in the worst case scenario, you draw up a pass play that allows your super athletic quarterback in Wilson to get around the pressure and run away to either a touchdown or throw the ball out of bounds.

But of course, logic didn’t apply to the Seahawks’ coaches. Head coach Pete Carroll, who to his credit has done a great job of coaching the Seahawks the past couple years, was thinking too much about this play. Instead of calling a simple run up the middle, he outsmartened himself by thinking the Patriots would never expect the pass. And just like it did when he was coaching USC in the 2006 Rose Bowl against Texas, Carroll’s late game red zone strategy blew up in his face and allowed the opponent to walk off the field as champions.

So while everything was in place to establish the Seahawks as the NFL’s 2010s dynasty, the coaching staff has instead pulled off one of the biggest chokes in sports history. No, it’s not hyperbolic at all to say that. The play call was mind-bogglingly dumb. The Seahawks can now put themselves alongside Bill Buckner in the 1986 World Series, the 2006 New York Mets, the 2011 Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves, and last year’s San Jose Sharks as some of the biggest collapses in sports history.

While the Seahawks did blow a 10 point lead in the 4th quarter, tied for the largest in Super Bowl history, the Seahawks still had a Super Bowl victory in their grasp. With one playcall, the entire course of football history has changed. And it cannot be said enough – the call to pass the ball with one yard to go was among the stupidest things we’ve ever seen.
