Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle Corey Liuget is suing his former trainer for $15 million in damages due to lost wages, pain, and suffering caused by his positive test for performance-enhancing drugs. A document filed in U.S. District Court in California on Tuesday revealed this. As a result, Liuget is serving a four-game suspension from the NFL.

Corey Liuget Suing Trainer

Ian Danney, former Canadian Olympic bobsledder and founder of Performance Enhancing Professionals, is named in the suit by Liuget. The Chargers tackle claims Danney is responsible for injecting him with the banned substances.

The 18-page document claims Danney told Liuget he was using a high dose of an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory to treat Liuget following a Chargers game last season. Liuget had previously broken metatarsals in both feet.

Liuget then took a drug test which came back positive. According to TMZ, Liuget confronted Danney, who admitted to giving him prescription medication but not a banned substance.

The suit alleges that injections of both took place in California. Danney doesn’t have a medical license for any kind of therapy there. Liuget says that because of Danney he failed an NFL-administered drug test for the first time in his seven-year career.

Liuget returns in week five to face the Oakland Raiders. He was selected No. 18 in the 2011 draft and has had 260 combined tackles and 22.5 sacks in seven NFL seasons.

After missing all 19 of his team’s games during the 2017-18 season and postseason, New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman could end up adding more to that number, as he is currently facing a 4-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policies surrounding performance-enhancing substances.

Edelman’s trainer, Alex Guerrero, issued a formal statement in which he said, “I’ve known Julian since his rookie year and he is a phenomenal athlete who takes his training seriously-it’s disappointing to hear today’s news. Elite athletes sometimes work with multiple coaches and health professionals as part of their training. Here at our facility, we take a natural, holistic, appropriate and, above all, legal approach to training and recovery for all of our clients. And anyone who would suggest otherwise is irresponsible, and just plain wrong.”

Edelman missed all of last season after tearing his ACL on a non-contact play during last year’s preseason. If this suspension were to hold up, he would miss the Patriots’ opening 4 games against the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, and Miami Dolphins.

This could prove to be a pretty big blow for the Patriots, who lost wide receivers Brandin Cooks and Danny Amendola in the offseason. Edelman has proven himself to be one of quarterback Tom Brady‘s favorite targets along with tight end Rob Gronkowski, recording 1,106 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns on 98 receptions over the 2016-17 season. Up until this point in time, the Patriots have made it seem as though they still find success even when a player who doesn’t where the number 12 on his jersey, so they should still be successful. However, Edelman is the most seasoned of New England’s wide receivers, especially given the fact that their receiving core is almost completely brand new. This could prove to be troublesome in their Week 2 matchup against Jacksonville, who possess what is arguably the most dominant defense in the NFL. Nonetheless, the Patriots will more likely than not be perfectly fine without Edelman on the field.

If his suspension does hold up, Edelman will be first eligible to take the field against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5.

Saints RB Mark Ingram suspended 4 games

New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram Jr. lost his appeal on Wednesday regarding a four-game suspension he was given for the 2018 season for alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Mark Ingram Four-Game Suspension Upheld

According to ESPN, 28-year-old Ingram challenged the suspension. His agents released a statement claiming the running back tested positive for a substance that was “permissible with the proper use exemption with the NFL,” and that Ingram would be “vigorously challenging” the arbitrator’s decision.

Nevertheless, the arbitrator upheld his decision on the suspension, which the NFL announced Tuesday.

The arbitrator’s full decision is scheduled to be announced by May 16, so Ingram still has a chance at having his suspension reversed.

Should the four-game ban be maintained, Ingram would miss games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants.  He would be allowed to return to New Orleans’ active roster on Oct. 1.

According to a report from ProFootballTalk, NFL players are allowed to use certain drugs as long as they request a therapeutic use exemption beforehand. Thus far, Ingram has not explicitly stated therapeutic use as his excuse for using the substance.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Ingram ran for a career-best 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. He also finished with 58 receptions for 416 yards.

Besides Ingram, the Saints also boasted running back Alvin Kamara — the Offensive Rookie of the Year — on their offense in 2017. Kamara, a third-round pick out of Tennessee last year, made the 2017 Pro Bowl.

Lance Armstrong: Tour de France Stage 17

Lance Armstrong has settled a $100 million lawsuit with the U.S. Government by agreeing to pay $5 million after claims surfaced that he had committed federal fraud by taking performance-enhancing drugs, it was announced Thursday.

Lance Armstrong Reaches $5 million settlement with Government

The 46-year-old former cyclist has been accused of using PEDs while the U.S. Postal Service was reportedly sponsoring his team. Armstrong, a seven-time Tour de France winner, confessed to taking illegal drugs in 2013 after years of denying having cheated. During his first six Tour de France wins (all of which came consecutively) from 1999 to 2005, he wore a Postal Service shirt. Then in 2012, he had his Tour titles taken away from him following a probe from the U.S. Ant-Doping Agency that concluded he and his cycling teammates had been using banned substances.

Armstrong’s top attorney, Elliot Peters, said in a phone interview with the New York Times that this case is a “bogus case” and that the Postal Service was not hurt in any way.

According to The Guardian, a trial is set to begin May 7 in Washington. CBS News reported Friday that the Justice Department is also involved in Armstrong’s case. The Department accused the cyclist, his team manager Johan Bruyneel and team owner Tailwind Sports of having “illegitimately procured” large sums of money from the Postal Service.

“Lance Armstrong and his cycling team took more than $30 million from the U.S. Postal Service based on their contractual promise to play fair and abide by the rules — including the rules against doping,” Ronald Machen Jr., U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Robert Luskin — one of Armstrong’s lawyers — claimed the Postal Service had benefited from the sponsorship by more than $100 million, and noted several studies from the service.

Several reports also said that Floyd Landis, one of Armstrong’s former teammates, was a plaintiff in the case when it was first filed in 2010. Landis reportedly served as a whistle-blower who could have also obtained money recovered by the U.S. Government.

The federal government decided to become involved in Armstrong’s case after he admitted to using illegal substances in 2013. The Postal Service, for its part, said it would never have sponsored the cyclist’s team had they known any members of it had been doping.

Per the Times, Armstrong is set to receive $1.1 million of the federal government’s $5 million.

Armstrong was diagnosed with stage three testicular cancer — which eventually metastasized — at age 25 in 1996. He retired from racing after the 2005 Tour de France and returned to the sport four years later. Armstrong retired again in 2011 after racing with Team Radio Shack, which he co-founded.

James Harrison has stated he is willing to meet with NFL investigators in order to discuss his link to performance-enhancing drugs, according to an Al-Jazeera America report, but the Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker has a few conditions for the interview.

Steelers LB James Harrison Demands Roger Goodell Come To Him For PED Interview

He made the statement via an Instragram post on Sunday, a post in which he said the interview must take place at his house (not in training camp as the league had previously planned), that Harrison gets to choose the date for the meeting, and that Commissioner Roger Goodell must attend.

Harrison, 38, also posted a copy of the league’s letter scheduling his interview for July 28, the day before the Steelers open camp in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

Harrison and the NFL have been at odds over PED testing this offseason, with the Steelers star recording one test and being shut down from recording a second test. He still took the test off-camera, claiming he was told not cooperating would be treated the same as a positive result.

When asked by ESPN and Pro Football Talk for a response to Harrison’s post, the NFL declined comment. Harrison’s agent, Bill Parise, also declined comment to ESPN.

The December Al-Jazeera report alleged that Harrison was one among several NFL players to receive shipments of a new PED called Delta-2 from a man identified as a pharmacist.

Harrison denied the allegations. The pharmacist, Charlie Sly, has since recanted the story that was the centerpiece of the report, which also implicated retired quarterback Peyton Manning as a recipient of HGH.

The league has also requested interviews with Green Bay Packers linebackers Julius Pepper and Clay Matthews and free agent Mike Neal, according to a letter obtained by ESPN on Friday. An NFL spokesman stated Monday that the league will meet with Manning as well.

In a statement responding to the letter Friday, the NFL Players Association said the league is trying to pressure the players into submission.

“The NFL has chosen to initiate an investigation of these players based upon now-recanted statements that appeared in an Al Jazeera report,” the NFLPA stated. “The NFLPA requested from the NFL any additional evidence supporting an investigation of the players; the NFL did not provide any such evidence, nor did they inform the NFLPA or the players that any such evidence exists.”
