The No. 14 Kentucky Wildcats opened 2019 with a bang by defeating the No. 12 Penn State Nittany Lions 27-24 on Tuesday in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida.

Kentucky Wildcats Win First Bowl Game Since 2008

With the win, Kentucky posted its first ten-win season since 1977 and secured its first bowl game victory since 2008. Linebacker Josh Allen and running back Benny Snell — two of the Wildcats’ biggest stars — delivered standout performances.

Snell even became Kentucky’s all-time leading rusher following a touchdown run in the second half that pushed the Wildcats’ lead to 27-7. Snell logged 144 rushing yards and two scores on 26 attempts on Tuesday. Allen finished with three tackles, three sacks and one blocked field goal.

“We just started from the beginning of the season. We came into the season as underdogs, and bond that we created as a team, it’s a brotherhood, it’s deeper than football. I’m proud of all my guys,” Snell told ESPN. “We’re legends. We’re all legends in our own way, we’re all special.”

After making the 12-yard touchdown run to reach his big accomplishment, Snell dropped to his knees in the end zone.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley battled through a foot injury to help lead the Nittany Lions back from a 20-point deficit in the second half. McSorley commandeered three consecutive scoring drives in the final quarter and finished 17 of 33 passing for 246 yards and two scores, as well as an interception.

One particular decision from Penn State’s offense in the final minutes of the game also appeared to shock and anger many of the team’s fans. With 4:12 left and the score at 27-21, James Franklin oped to kick a field goal from the 14-yard line instead of attempting a conversion on fourth-and-7. The decision may have been especially surprising because the Nittany Lions still had three timeouts left at that point and the Wildcats hadn’t scored in the fourth quarter up until then.

Kentucky (10-3) finished third in the SEC East and 5-3 in its conference. Meanwhile, Penn State (9-4) was third in the Big Ten East and 6-3 in its conference.

Here are some highlights from the exciting 2019 Citrus Bowl:

On the Nittany Lions’ first play of the second half, Saquon Barkley ran for a 79-yard touchdown. On their second play, Trace McSorley found Chris Godwin for a 72-yard touchdown, and at that point, the Penn State bench was going wild.

Here is how Franklin celebrated the huge score:

USC kicker Matt Boermeester scored a game-winning 46-yard field goal as time expired– after two missed attempts– to lead the Trojans to the victory.

Penn State initially erased a 27-14 first-half deficit to gain a comfortable 49-35 second-half advantage. Then came USC’s turn. Although they lost one of their top players, defensive back Adoree’ Jackson, to an ankle injury and their leading tackler Cam Smith to a targeting ejection, the Trojans didn’t give up.

USC forced a Nittany Lions punt and got the ball back with a minute and 59 seconds remaining, although even then, trailing 49-42, the Trojans needed to gain 80 yards just to tie the game.

USC’s freshman quarterback Sam Darnold ultimately helped save his team from defeat. He was named the Trojans’ starting quarterback after USC got off to a 1-2 start, and his MVP performance on Monday demonstrated why.

Helped by a pair of Nittany Lions defensive pass interference penalties, Darnold led the Trojans on a three-play, 80-yard touchdown drive capped by a 27-yard strike to sophomore Deontay Burnett that tied it up 49-all.

Then, USC safety Leon McQuay intercepted McSorley on the following drive and returned it 32 yards to the Nittany Lions 33-yard line to give USC a chance to win it in regulation.

Darnold, who grew up in Southern California dreaming about playing in this game, finished 33-of-53 passing for 453 yards with five touchdowns for a very memorable outing.

Burnett recorded a career-high 13 catches for 164 yards and three touchdowns to help overshadow Penn State’s excellent second half.

New Court Documents Reveal Joe Paterno Knew of Penn State Abuse Scandal

Newly unsealed court documents detail former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky’s pattern of abuse among young men. The documents, unsealed Tuesday in a Philadelphia court, also allege that head coach Joe Paterno was aware of the abuse and that he dismissed a victim’s complaint about Sandusky.

New Court Documents Suggest Joe Paterno, Others At Penn State Knew Of Abuse

One victim, designated as John Doe 150, said he told Paterno that Sandusky had “put his finger in [the victim’s] rectum.” According to the victim, Paterno dismissed him, saying “I have a football season to worry about.”

“I was shocked, disappointed, offended,” the victim said. “I was insulted.”

John Doe 150 testified in court in 2014 that Joe Paterno had ignored his complaints of Sandusky’s sexual assault against him, which occurred in 1976 when the man was 14 years old.

Another victim, John Doe 75, was not interviewed for Sandusky’s criminal trial, but he described a 1987 incident in which coach Joe Sarra, also of the Penn State Nittany Lions, walked in when Sandusky had his hand down the victim’s pants. Sarra died in 2012.

“My mind was manipulated so bad that you think like some of this stuff is normal,” John Doe 75 said. “Like it’s scary.”

Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano and UCLA defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, both former Penn State assistants named in the documents, denied on Tuesday allegations that they– along with Paterno– were aware of Sandusky behaving inappropriately with boys long before law enforcement was first notified in 1998.

Another testimony included in the documents is from former assistant Mike McQueary. He testified that he witnessed Sandusky molesting a young boy in the university’s football showers in 2001.

McQueary stated he told Timothy Curley and Gary Schultz– two crucial members of the Penn State sports administration team at the time– what he had witnessed. He was contacted by the pair after reporting the incident to Paterno.

New in this deposition, however, is that McQueary had also discussed the incident with Bradley, who said “another assistant coach had come to him” with similar allegations in the 1990s, according to the deposition. That man was Schiano.

Over the years, Bradley has repeatedly denied knowledge of any of Sandusky’s abuse.

Curley and Schultz were also deposed as a part of the case. Both refused to answer most of the questions, citing their rights under the Fifth Amendment.

The trove of documents unsealed Tuesday came from a legal dispute between the university and an insurance company over the responsibility for nearly $93 million the school paid in settlements with victims. In addition, the Paterno family is suing the NCAA for defamation and commercial disparagement; the NCAA is considering utilizing some of the information unveiled Tuesday for its defense.

“Joe Paterno never engaged in a cover up of Jerry Sandusky’s crimes,” the family said in a statement. “The materials released today relating to Joe Paterno allege a conversation that occurred decades ago where all parties except the accuser are now dead. In addition, there are numerous specific elements of the accusations that defy all logic and have never been subjected to even the most basic objective examination.”

Paterno died of lung cancer at the age of 85 in January 2012, just two months after Sandusky was indicted on 40 counts of sex crimes against young boys by a grand jury following a two-year investigation. Sandusky was charged with an additional 12 counts of sexual crimes against children in December 2011, and was formally convicted in June 2012. He was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison in October 2012.

The 72-year-old former coach is appealing his conviction.

Sandusky was a longtime defensive coach for Paterno who was respected on the field for his football acumen and off the field for his charitable work before he was unmasked as a serial child predator. Sandusky met most of his victims through Second Mile, a charity he created in 1977 to help underprivileged youth. He often brought Second Mile children to the football team’s facilities on campus.

Penn State President Eric J. Barron additionally issued a statement regarding the documents’ release, emphasizing that “alleged knowledge of former Penn State employees is not proven, and should not be treated as such.”

“Penn State’s overriding concern has been, and remains, for the victims of Jerry Sandusky,” the statement continued. “While individuals hold different opinions, and may draw different inferences from the testimony about former Penn State employees, speculation by Penn State is not useful.”

With the win, coach Thad Matta’s Ohio State team now has another 20-win season.

The Buckeyes (20-12) were still behind at halftime, but regained an early lead in the second half thanks to a 14-0 run, although it was not enough to pull away.

Marc Loving scored a game-high 24 points, including a few free throws to give Ohio State the lead after the score was tied at 67 with 3:48 left. This was Loving’s third straight game with 20 points or more. He also blocked a layup by Penn State’s Payton Banks with just over a minute remaining.

JaQuan Lyle added 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State struggled to keep up with Penn State’s inside-out game in the first half. Penn State in total shot 7 for 12 from deep, including shots from the Nittany Lions’ Brandon Taylor, Shep Garner, and Donovan Jack to build a 37-34 halftime lead.

Penn State finished the game 3 for 10 from the field.

The Buckeyes will next face the Michigan State Spartans in Friday’s Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. They lost to the Spartans twice in the final three games of the season by an average of 17 points.
