Brazil Knocked Out of Copa America After 1-0 Loss to Peru

Brazil beat Paraguay in the quarterfinals of the Copa America Thursday night on a penalty shootout. After 90 minutes of finishing 0-0, the game went straight to penalties and Brazil sends their way through to the semifinals to play the winner of Venezuela and Argentina.

The Brazilians had Paraguay on the ropes for the majority of the game, forcing them to sit back inside their own half and tirelessly defend Brazilians’ dynamic forwards, applying a total of 26 shots on them compared to Paraguay’s five. Roberto Firmino, Arthur Melo and Philippe Coutinho were applying pressure to the Paraguayans for 58 minutes before Firmino was clear on goal before being taken down just outside the penalty box. The foul saw the official raise a red card to the Paraguyan defender Fabian Balbuena.

After going down to 10 men, Paraguay had little to no chance of providing any sort of attack, settling to put all 10 men behind the ball and hold on until the final whistle. In other tournaments across the world, if it was tied after 90 minutes of play there would be an overtime of 30 minutes, but for this Copa America they have outlawed that, deciding to go straight to penalties after 90 minutes.

In penalties, Brazil’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker made an incredible save with the first shot to give his team a major momentum boost ahead of the rest of the shootout. Firmino missed his penalty to make it level for Paraguay but Derlis Gonzalez stepped up right after at sent his shot wide as well. Brazil’s Gabriel Jesus stepped up and sunk the winning penalty, sending his team through to the semifinals.

Brazil has arguably the best attack in the tournament, even without their star forward Neymar. With a stubborn Paraguayan defense fighting for a 0-0 and clinging on for penalties, its unlikely Brazil faces another play-style like that this tournament. The more offensively-capable teams will open up more and force Brazil to defend and honor their attacks. Brazil will find out who they play in the semifinals after Venezuela faces Argentina on Friday at 3:00 EST.

USMNT fail to qualify for 2018 Russia World Cup

The U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team have had a rough few months, but if you still believe in them you can see them play Paraguay in a friendly game later this month.

U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team vs. Paraguay tickets

The USMNT failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup (in Russia this summer) after suffering a brutal  2-0 loss to Trinidad & Tobago in their final qualifier in October. However, U.S. Soccer elected a new president — Carlos Cordeiro, a veteran administrator of the federation — in February to replace Sunil Gulati, who had been in charge of U.S. Soccer since 2006. The last time the U.S. men missed out on a World Cup bid was in 1986.

One could hope that new leadership in the federation could help American soccer improve to the level it was up until a few years ago.

The game against Paraguay will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina on Tuesday, March 27. The matchup is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm EST. Tickets begin at just $52 on ticketmaster.com.

Mobile tickets will be available for download Friday, March 16 at 10 am EST. This event only allows mobile as a delivery method. Orders are limited to one transaction per household or place of business.

The USMNT will also face Ireland and France on the road in June.

Both the U.S. and Paraguay failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, so Tuesday’s game was more about seeing how these teams would compete in the 2022 finals.

“This match once again represents an opportunity for some new faces,” U.S. interim coach Dave Sarachan said about his 22-man roster, per U.S. Soccer’s official site. “The roster has an average age under 24, so for the most part this is a group of younger players that we feel have a future with the national team along with some familiar names.”

Kyle Martino, a contributor for NBC Sports, and MLSSoccer.com’s Matthew Doyle both stated they think the U.S. men’s team has a bright future ahead of it.

Before his goal, Wood was one of the few issues with the US men’s team in the first half of Tuesday’s game at WakeMed Soccer Park. The 25-year-old Hamburg (Bundesliga) forward was the only striker playing for the Americans, something that only magnified his errors.

Wood’s penalty came after Paraguay goalkeeper Gatito Fernandez fouled 19-year-old New York Red Bulls midfielder Tyler Adams, a youngster who impressed fans who raved about him on social media.

Sarachan just utilized four substitutes in the game, and made no changes until the 67th minute.

The USMNT will next face Bolivia in another friendly game in Chester, Pennsylvania on May 28.

FIFA Announces Expansion to 48 Countries for 2026 World Cup

Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay are hoping to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

2030 FIFA World Cup hosting bid

The three South American countries announced their joint bid at the presidential palace in Buenos Aires on Wednesday. Argentina and Uruguay first planned a joint bid, and then Paraguay joined.

Bidding for that tournament — which will mark the 100th anniversary of the global soccer event — is not set to officially begin for at least another four years.

Uruguay hosted the inaugural World Cup in 1930.

“Today we are here to ratify this commitment,” Argentinian president Mauricio Macri said. “We have spoken to the president of FIFA and we will have the support of [South American Football Confederation] CONMEBOL, which believes South America deserves the possibility of hosting this World Cup because of the significance of the 100 year anniversary of the first edition in Uruguay.”

Uruguay president Tabare Vazquez and Paraguay president Horacio Cartes seconded Macri’s comments.

“I think the argument of the 100-year anniversary of the first World Cup held in Uruguay makes it very attractive for the region to organize the tournament,” said Cartes.

Russia is set to host the 2018 World Cup, while Qatar will host the 2022 event. The United States, Mexico and Canada are seeking to make a joint bid for the 2026 tournament, which will be the first World Cup in which 48 countries will participate, instead of 32. FIFA president Gianni Infantino established this new rule in January.

Qatar’s 2022 hosting bid is said to be in danger due to reports of worker exploitation in the extremely hot Middle Eastern country.
