Derry City Captain Ryan McBride Dies At 27, Tributes Pour In

The soccer world, and particularly the Irish league, was in shock about McBride’s passing early Monday. The cause of the defender’s death remains unknown, though his teammates reportedly said their captain wasn’t feeling well after Saturday’s game.

On Saturday, McBride had led Derry to a 4-0 home victory over Drogheda United, the club’s fourth league win this season.

The defender grew up in Northern Ireland in the Brandywell district, where Derry’s ground is based, and then played non-league football, but then returned to play for Derry, which he described as a “dream come true.”

“Other footballers have dreams of going across the water and playing for Man United and Celtic, but my dream as a boy was to play for Derry City and that came true.”

Dozens of tributes from fans, teammates and other players, and coaches all began pouring in early Monday morning. The President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, led the tributes.
Michael D Higgins led the tributes. “Along with all those who support Irish football, I express my sadness and condolences to the family of @derrycityfc captain Ryan McBride,” Higgins tweeted.

Derry City FC manager Kenny Shiels said: “It’s hard for everybody to take.

“This is going to be a difficult one for everyone in the city. The players loved Ryan.

“He was the perfect example to any young player coming through at 13 or 14.”

Here are some of the many other social media tributes for McBride, including that of Ireland and West Bromwich Albion winger James McClean, a former teammate and friend of McBride.

The former Manchester United and Ireland defender Paul McGrath tweeted: “My thoughts are with the family, friends & club mates of Derry City captain Ryan McBride who has passed away. RIP.”

This is the third tragedy to hit Derry in the past year. Forward Mark Farren died of a brain tumor at the age of 33 and another player, Josh Daniels, lost his mother, sister, brother-in-law and two nephews in a horrific car accident.

FIFA Investigates Wales and Northern Ireland for Poppies

FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, has fined England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for their display of poppies during 2018 Russia World Cup qualifiers around Armistice Day.

England and Scotland players wore armbands featuring the flower when they played at Wembley on November 11.

Wales and Northern Ireland’s respective games featured on-field displays or in the stands to mark the holiday, during which fallen soldiers are honored.

England’s Football Association will appeal against the fine of £35,311 ($43,667), with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland yet to decide.

Scotland and Wales were both fined £15,694 ($19,409), and Northern Ireland £11,770 ($14,555).

A Scottish FA (SFA) spokesman confirmed discussions between the home nations have already taken place and an official appeal is likely to be lodged early in the new year.

FIFA disciplinary committee chairman Claudio Sulser said he completely respected the commemorations but emphasized that the rules “need to be applied to all member associations.”

“The display, among others, of any political or religious symbol is strictly prohibited,” he added. “In the stadium and on the pitch, there is only room for sport, nothing else.”

Sports Minister Tracey Crouch described FIFA’s decision as “disappointing.”

Following Wales’ 1-1 draw at home to Serbia last month, FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings looking at “fans in the stands wearing the poppy” and the presence of “a member of the armed forces holding a bunch of poppies at the exit of the tunnel,” according to the Football Association of Wales (FAW).

Similarly, the holding of a minute’s silence, the laying of a wreath and a poppy display by fans before Northern Ireland’s 4-0 win over Azerbaijan on Nov. 11 have led to the punishment of the Irish FA.

FIFA has also punished the Irish FA with a £3,930 ($4,860) fine after its players wore shirts commemorating the centenary of the Easter Rising earlier this year.

FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Northern Irish and Welsh Football Associations for incidents including “fans wearing poppies” during a recent game between the two national teams.

FIFA Investigates Northern Ireland And Wales Over Poppy Displays

It relates to commemorations during Wales’ 1-1 draw with Serbia on Nov. 12. The Irish Football Association is under investigation for events prior to Northern Ireland’s 4-0 victory over Azerbaijan on 11 November, Armistice Day.

The move comes after both England and Scotland have been investigated for similar reasons. Players from both national teams were seen wearing poppies on their armbands during their match on Armistice Day.

International Football Association Board rules ban “political, religious or personal messages” on kits, while Fifa ground safety regulations say “the promotion or announcement of political or religious messages” in stadiums is “strictly prohibited.”

Teams who violate such rules can either be fined or have points deducted.

Football Association of Wales (FAW) chief executive Jonathan Ford stated the association is very “disappointed and surprised” and will “strongly contest the charges.”

“Our intention was to show respect on Armistice weekend which we feel we did in the right and proper way,” he said. “We also adhered to the rules and regulations of the competition and the communication from Fifa prohibiting the FAW request for the players to wear the poppy symbol on the armbands or the field of play. We are particularly disappointed that one of the charges relates to supporters in the stands wearing poppies.”

Aside from fans, a member of the armed forces is also being investigated for holding a bunch of poppies at the exit of the tunnel on Nov. 12. Furthermore, a fans mosaic depicting the poppy was displayed during the anthem of Wales. A banner depicting the poppy was also displayed by Welsh supporters before the game began.

A minute of silence was also held during Wales’ game to honor fallen soldiers.

The Irish FA, for its part, said that it “will robustly defend the disciplinary charges.”

FIFA also recently opened disciplinary proceedings over Ireland’s use of a logo during a friendly against Switzerland in March to commemorate the centenary of the Eastern Rising.
