The Indianapolis Colts’ announcement last Wednesday that quarterback Nick Foles would start in the team’s Week 16 game against the Chargers felt like more of a surrender than anything else. Former Falcons star Matt Ryan headed to the bench for the second time this season under his second head coach, now having been replaced by two different quarterbacks. The Colts lost 20-3.

At the beginning of the season, Ryan’s move to Indianapolis spelled promise for a Colts franchise that had slowly been improving over the course of the 2021 season. He has not come close to fulfilling the role of savior since, however. Through 12 starts, he ranks 14th in passing yards, 20th in touchdowns and 25th in quarterback rating.

Following a particularly ugly loss to the Titans in Week 7, former head coach Frank Reich benched Ryan ahead of Week 8 in favor of rookie Sam Ehlinger, who only lasted two weeks before sustaining an injury. Reich was fired soon after and replaced by interim head coach Jeff Saturday, who reinstated Ryan as the starter until Week 15.

Foles’ reputation as a backup maintains a mythical quality because of his work on the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2017 season when he stepped in for Carson Wentz and led the playoff-bound team to a Super Bowl victory. This run in Indianapolis will likely be far less romantic, however, as his first start against Los Angeles resulted in an anemic 20-3 defeat. The Colts have been eliminated from playoff contention and will have to carry on without star running back Jonathan Taylor, who suffered a season-ending injury last week.

As the Colts limp through the end of a season that once seemed to hold serious potential, it’s impossible to assess the source of the team’s dysfunction without pointing to Ryan. Once a dynamic passer in Atlanta for a perennially productive offense, the 37-year-old simply has not shown the same ability in Indianapolis.

In many ways, the Colts’ offseason cannot come fast enough, as their running back needs time to recuperate while they search for a permanent head coaching replacement. Only then will they be able to reassess the quarterback position and resume a rebuild that has suffered countless setbacks since Andrew Luck’s departure in 2018.

Sure, they’ve won a Super Bowl and are usually in the playoff hunt, but there’s one regrettable move the Philadelphia Eagles failed to make that could’ve made them even better: drafting quarterback Russell Wilson.

Prior to the 2012 Draft, then-Eagles head coach Andy Reid said Wilson had potential to be great and wanted to take him in the third round. Unfortunately for them, he had already been chosen.

The Seahawks, of course, took him in the third round before Philly’s pick. That led to the team taking Nick Foles, who went on to lead the team to a Super Bowl victory.

The Eagles settled for Fletcher Cox in the first round, Mychal Kendricks and Vinny Curry with their two picks in the second round, and then Foles.

“[Wilson] is a player we didn’t get, and I’ll always regret it,” Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said. “It was someone I really wish we had drafted in the second round and didn’t wait. But we really didn’t think that anyone would jump us and take Russell, so that was that.”

“It’s very, very difficult to project what you call franchise or what we might call franchise quarterback,” he added. “It happens. It just happens. After year one or year two, is Josh Allen a franchise quarterback? Was he even thought to be a franchise quarterback when Buffalo drafted him? I think the answers are clearly no, no, and no. He developed into one. We all have this vision, myself included, of an automatic franchise quarterback. It’s almost nonexistent and when it does exist, you’re very, very lucky to have that.”

It’s hard to regret drafting a quarterback who stepped in for the injured starter, pulled off one of the greatest playoff runs in sports history, and led your team to its only Super Bowl win, but here we are.

On Wednesday, the Chicago Bears turned heads by trading away their fourth-round draft pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for quarterback Nick Foles.

The Bears traded away their 140 overall pick of this year’s NFL draft to acquire Foles as a new quarterback to put in Chicago’s rotation. This trade also includes Foles restructuring his contract from the lucrative deal he had with Jacksonville last year. He still has three years and $21 million guaranteed left on the deal. However, Foles now has the ability to void the deal after either of the first two years, depending on the upside of his performance.

Nick Foles Stats

With Foles coming to Chicago, the former Super Bowl MVP is going to stir up the depth chart for the Bears as he will fight for the starting quarterback position with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. The Bears came into the legal tampering period on Monday with the goal of bringing in a veteran quarterback to complete with Trubisky after missing the playoffs eight out the last nine seasons. The second overall pick of the 2017 draft, Trubisky finished the 2019 season 28th in Total QBR (39.4), tied for 27th in touchdown passes (17), 21st in passing yards (3,138), 32nd in yards gained per pass attempt (6.1) and 28th in traditional quarterback rating (83.0). Trubisky had surgery in January to repair a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder but is expected to be ready when training camp opens in July.

Foles has a strong familiarity level between Foles and Chicago’s coaching staff. Bears head coach Matt Nagy coached Foles in both Philadelphia and Kansas City. He has ran the same offense that Nagy is trying to run in Chicago to perfection and won a championship with it. Foles has also been crossed paths with offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo and offensive line coach Juan Castillo during various times with the Eagles. The 31-year-old is also coming off of a shoulder injury from last season but has the resume and stats to become the Bears’ new starting quarterback.

The Jacksonville Jaguars plan to bounce back from a disappointing 2019 campaign where they finished last in the AFC South with a 6-10 record. On Tuesday, the organization hired Jay Gruden, hoping the former Redskins’ head coach can improve a team that finished 20th in total offense, according to NFL Team Stats.

“We were trying to find someone who’s best for this staff, who’s best for what you want to run, then you’re looking for what person’s best for your players – who’s going to relate to the players, who’s going to be able to communicate with them,” Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said. “At the end of the day, we just felt that Jay was the best fit for us.”

The Redskins fired Gruden after an 0-5 start in his sixth season as head coach. He leaves Washington with a 35-49-1 record including an NFC East title and playoff appearance in 2015.

Before his first head coaching gig Gruden spent three years as the offensive coordinator in Cincinnati. In his three seasons the team finished with a winning record each year and in 2013, his offensive schemes helped the Bengals rank in the top ten in total yards per game, according to ESPN.

One of the toughest decisions Gruden will face is what quarterback will be starting Week 1 next season. Jacksonville had previously signed Nick Foles to a four-year, $88 million contract last March with a franchise record $50.125 guaranteed, but he sustained a broken collar bone in the first game of the 2019 season. He was replaced by rookie sixth round pick Gardner Minshew who went 4-5 before Foles returned. Much to the Jaguars’ chagrin, Foles struggled and was replaced by Minshew after just two and a half games. Marrone and general manager Dave Caldwell have not announced which quarterback will start in 2020.

Jacksonville hasn’t had much to celebrate about the past few years. But this year brought about the addition of Superbowl MVP Nick Foles, only to see him go down with injury in his first game. Enter sixth round pick Gardner Minshew.

Usually that is not the greatest news you want to hear: Rookie. Sixth round. Second string. Replacement. But Minshew held his own against a decent-playing Titans team on Thursday night. The Jaguars won 20-7.

Although Minshew made some mishaps, it was more apparent that he and the offense have yet to completely click. He has had one week taking practice snaps as the starter. In the past, his accuracy has been question, but on Thursday there were some amazing threads thrown in tight coverage. The Titans’ corners and safeties did not look bad. It was all Minshew.

Minshew found Clark on the opposite side of defenders and dropped it like a gift from above on many occasions. It was much needed as star running back Leonard Fournette was held to negative points in the first half. He would go on to finish with 66 yards after a long break away that led to the tenth yard line, and a few successful carries.

Minshew went 20 for 30 with 205 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Although far from a finished product, the Jaguars looked good on both ends. They sacked Marcus Marriotta a total of nine times. The was no breathing room for the Titans, who managed to score in the second half. Marriotta was rushed and was help with no target all day. He had a few bright spots, throwing for distance when he could get the ball out in time, and ended with 304 yards. He had no touchdowns and no interceptions.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

After three games, Marriotta is third in the league with 706 passing yards. Minshew is fourth with 692.

The Jaguars and Minshew don’t play again until next week Sunday, September 29 against the Denver Broncos.

On Thursday night, The Philadelphia Eagles announced a new long-term contract with QB Carson Wentz. The 26-year-old is entering his prime years in the NFL, and will be a major piece to the Eagles moving forward as the have locked his future for the next four years.

Wentz’s contract contains a worth of $128 million for four years, which comes out to roughly $32 million a season. The contract contains possible bonuses with a $144 million max value, with $107 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This contract is the new NFL record for the most guaranteed amount of money to a player. For the yearly rate, Wentz falls in fourth, with Seahawks’ QB Russell Wilson earning $35 million a year, Steelers’ QB Ben Roethlisberger with $34 million a year, and Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers with $33.5 million a year, according to NFL.com

“Can’t even explain to you how excited I am right now to be a part of this great city for this many more years,” Wentz said, via Twitter, according to CBS Sports. “It means the world to me. From the moment I got drafted here, I knew this place was special. I knew they had the most passionate fans in the world in all of sports. I knew we had the opportunity to build something truly special here. To be cemented here for this much longer means the world to me.”

Wentz had a breakout sophomore season in 2017, but then had to be sidelined the final three games of the  season after tearing his ACL. He was a strong candidate for that seasons’ MVP before the injury. The Eagles won the Super Bowl that same season, after backup Nick Foles led the team and won the Super Bowl MVP.

Wentz went to college at North Dakota State and shot up the NFL draft boards during the 2016 offseason for his tremendous arm, height and lateral quickness. The Eagles would later trade up in the draft for him, drafting him second overall. In three total seasons with the Eagles, Wentz has over 10,000 total yards, throwing 70 touchdowns and just 28 interceptions in 40 total starts for the team.

Along with Wentz, the Eagles have secured several veterans on long-term deals, including receivers Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson, TE Zach Ertz, and defensive linemen Malik JacksonBrandon Graham and Fletcher Cox.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in rebuild mode after trading former QB Blake Bortles and signing former Philadelphia quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles.

The Jags also picked up LB Josh Allen from Kentucky with their first-round pick in this year’s draft. Doug Marrone and the Jaguars organization continue their rebuild by signing a veteran wide receiver, Terrelle Pryor. Pryor just signed a one-year deal with Jacksonville earlier on Monday morning, and with good reasoning, as the Jaguars lack depth in the receiver position. Pryor has 1,563 yards from 115 catches and seven total touchdowns in six seasons in the NFL.

Foles’ options out wide are limited, as Dede Westbrook, Chris Conley, Keelan Cole and DJ Chark will be welcoming Pryor on board. The other receivers for the Jags are undrafted rookies Michael WalkerRaphael LeonardTyre Brady and Dredrick Snelson. Pryor is the biggest receiver on the team at 6-foot-4 and 228 pounds, according to CBS Sports.

After starting his career as a QB, as he did at Ohio State and his first few NFL seasons, he made the transition to receiver. In 2016, he had a breakout NFL season for the Cleveland Browns, obtaining over 1,000 yards from 77 catches. Pryor turns 30 next month and will be a massive influence on some of the younger players in his position. An experienced veteran is exactly what the Jags needed in the receiver room. The Jaguars released DT Lyndon Johnson to make room on the roster for Pryor.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Even after the signing of Pryor, the Jags still lack serious skill for receivers if they want to win the AFC South and make a spot in the postseason. For the Jags’ competition this year, the Indianapolis Colts have veteran T.Y. Hilton returning for them as one of the most dynamic receivers in the league, as well as first-round pick Parris Campbell as new youth to add to the Colts’ offense. The Houston Texans have All-Pro Deandre Hopkins returning, as well as Will Fuller, who had a breakout year for the Texans last season. The Jags can be proud to say they have the third-best WR core in their division, as the Tennessee Titans have virtually little to no experience or ability in the WR position.

Former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles and his wife, Tori, had an emotional announcement earlier on Wednesday regarding a recent miscarriage the family suffered this past weekend.

Tori was just 15 weeks pregnant before having to go to the hospital, where she battled a reported virus and blood infection, which forced her to go into labor early.

“The emotions go back and forth from immense and overwhelming sadness, confusion and anger to a firm belief that God has this fully in his hands and will use this for good,” Tori wrote via an Instagram post. “We cannot always understand or explain, but we know that is true.”

The new Jacksonville Jaguar quarterback missed OTA’s this past weekend, helping to take care of his wife and family.  Foles recently signed a four-year, $91 million contract for the Jaguars after his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles. Foles was signed this off-season after the Jaguars released former QB, Blake Bortles, who now plays for the Los Angeles Rams.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Nick and his family. He knows, like anything else, that we’re here for him,” head coach Doug Marrone said earlier this past weekend, according to NFL.com and the Jaguars’ official website. “The football part, we’ll just figure that out. My mind is on more so of what’s going on the outside, making sure I’m doing the best job I can for the player.”

The Jaguars’ other quarterbacks, Tanner Lee, Alex McGough and Gardner Minshewto, will be rotating the starting job until Foles’ return.

Tori also wrote, “We’ve endured some unique challenges as a couple so far, but never quite knew what something like this felt like and now we do,” she said on her post. The Foles family has returned home from the hospital and is in recovery.

Foles will likely return to voluntary practices later this week, before the mandatory team mini-camp coming up on June 11.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to sign former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles after the quarterback became involved in rumors surrounding his previous season. The 30-year-old man who brought the Philadelphia Eagles their first national championship will not be franchise-tagged this offseason. Instead, the team will place all their hopes in the hands of oft-injured quarterback Carson Wentz and leave Foles to fend for himself as an unrestricted free agent.

Nick Foles May Land With Jags

Over his last five playoff games, Foles threw for 1438 yards and nine touchdowns. That span also includes two fourth-quarter comebacks and one Lombardi trophy hoisted at the end of the season. While Foles will remain a legend in Philly for the rest of his life, the fact that the Eagles chose to move on and not him preserves his image. NBC Sports Philadelphia took to Twitter, writing, “For everything you’ve done for the Eagles and for the city of Philadelphia… Thank you, Nick Foles. ?”

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Wentz will hope to play in his first full season since his rookie year. Though he showed flashes of greatness since his ACL tear, the North Dakota State product had an up-and-down 2018 and injury issues continued to plague him. On top of that, some teammates questioned his leadership skills and his integrity in a bombshell Philly Voice report.

In Jacksonville, Foles will find a slumping squad in desperate need of a turnaround. Just a year removed from a conference finals berth, the Jags stumbled to a 5-11 last-place finish. If Foles joins the team, it’s almost guaranteed that they’ll get rid of quarterback Blake Bortles.

It’s important to note that on top of being paired with top players Leonard Fournette and Marqise Lee, Foles will once again be reunited with John DeFilippo. DeFilippo serves as the teams offensive coordinator and was Philly’s quarterback coach during their 2017 title run. Jacksonville can only hope to repeat that success.

Eagles decide Against foles Franchise Tag

With the NFL season over, the window of a franchise tag is now open. A new report came out that the Eagles will not place the franchise tag on Foles. Instead, it was reported that Foles will become a free agent and will be able to sign with another team once the new league year has started on March 13.

Philadelphia previously picked up the $20 million option that was left on Foles’ contract for the 2019 season. With Carson Wentz still recovering from a torn  ACL at the time, the best bet was keeping the Super Bowl MVP until he was healthy again. At that point, the veteran quarterback declined said option — giving back $2 million of his 2018 bonus. Short of Philadelphia franchise-tagging him, this was Foles’ only way of buying his freedom at the time.

The Eagles released a short video thanking Foles for his time with the organization, showcasing his highlights.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Foles’ value to a team is obviously known by his on-field play, leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl championship after star quarterback and regular season MVP candidate  Wentz went down with a torn ACL. Foles went on to lead the team to a 2-1 regular season record, winning the NFC title and finishing it off by winning the Super Bowl.

This is all pretty impressive, but even more so when we realize Foles is a backup who has the value of a starter and to some teams, maybe even a star player. With Foles winning the Super Bowl MVP this greatly adds to his value for future possible trades the Eagles could make. This could lead to the Eagles acquiring more  draft picks for the franchise or a trade so they get  more valuable players asset to add to the team – possibly a star wide receiver to play with the star quarterback.

A fear some teams may have in acquiring Foles is fear he begins to regress and return to playing at the backup quarterback level once he is traded to his new team. With Foles struggling in the past, in his last 12 combined starts between the Kansas City Chiefs and then-St. Louis Rams, Foles had a 5-7 record with 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. These aren’t good numbers for a starting quarterback and  may be one of the reasons teams may not look for him in free agency. However, while playing for the Eagles and with playoffs included, Foles posted a 25-13 record with 69 touchdowns and 28 interceptions in Philadelphia.

The Jacksonville Jaguars look like a good fit for Foles. With the Jaguars defense already featuring several young players, to many it seems the team’s missing piece is a good quarterback. By releasing their former starting quarterback Blake Bortles, that’s definitely a position the Jaguars will have to fill before the season starts.

Eli Manning Leads Giants to 28-23 Win vs Eagles

It’s a must-win for the 1-4 New York Football Giants as they take on the equally desperate 2-3 Philadelphia Eagles for another showcase of Thursday Night Football.

Desperate Division Rivals Giants, Eagles Clash For TNF

Somehow, in a way only the Giants can manage, Big Blue is still in this thing. The NFC playoffs picture is bleak and undeveloped, but the frontrunners are beginning to mold, leaving the slow starters in the rearview with each passing week. With a bit of a Super Bowl hangover, the Eagles are feeling the same sense of urgency under the spotlight of FOX’s display of NFC East rivals.

After an exhilarating game that set up a devastating loss for the Giants, tensions are high and the wins low. Running back Saquon Barkley had another outstanding game and is poised for another big receiving matchup against a tepid Eagles pass defense. Wide receiver Odell Becham Jr. could see the same success, as he looks to score his first receiving touchdown of the season.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

The Giants will desperately need offensive production in what could turn into a ballistic shootout with the Eagles’ decimated run game following the loss of RB Jay Ajayi to an ACL tear. The Eagles will assuredly get pressure on the Giants offense and quarterback Eli Manning, and how his play mirrors that of opposing QB Carson Wentz will be key in the final score.

With both teams hungry for first place in the division, it’ll only take a win tonight to become a step closer, as Washington still sits atop at 2-2.

Thursday’s game at MetLife Stadium will start at 8:20 p.m. EST and will air on FOX and NFL Network.

Reigning Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles is set to be the starter for the Eagles after recovering from a preseason shoulder strain, while Carson Wentz is still nursing an ACL injury from last December. Wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey will also sit out Thursday’s contest, as he continues to recover from a shoulder injury.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

The Falcons will keep benefiting from veteran offensive players like Matt Ryan, Devonta Freeman and Julio Jones — who is arguably one of the league’s top receivers — although they could also see a new batch of younger players give them a boost. Rookie wideout Calvin Ridley — a first-round (No. 26) pick out of Alabama — may get some playing time, while other first-year defensive players like Colorado cornerback Isaiah Oliver and South Florida defensive tackle Deadrin Senat could also have an opportunity to make a strong first impression.

Despite advancing to Super Bowl LI after the 2016 season, some Falcons veterans like Ryan and Jones have seen their performance statistics drop, although they could make a resurgence this year.

Thursday’s game in Philadelphia will start at 8:20 p.m. EST and will air on NBC.

Nick Foles had a rough return in his first NFL game since Super Bowl LII.

Eagles QB Nick Foles Has Shoulder Sprain

After sitting out last week’s 31-14 preseason opening loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl MVP left early in the second quarter of Thursday night’s 37-20 defeat to the New England Patriots with a shoulder strain. On a second-and-8, Foles was strip-sacked by defensive lineman Adrian Clayborn, and rookie linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley — a fifth-round draft pick out of Purdue — scooped it up to run 54 yards for a touchdown. By that point, the Patriots led 17-0 and third-string Eagles quarterback Nate Sudfeld replaced Foles, who finished just 3 for 9 for 44 yards.

Foles has since been listed as questionable for next Thursday’s game at Cleveland. The only good thing the young quarterback got to experience was shaking reigning NFL MVP Tom Brady‘s hand, something that never happened after Philadelphia beat New England in this year’s Super Bowl. Brady insisted to reporters after Thursday’s game that he didn’t try to intentionally avoid Foles after the Pats lost in February.

“That was kind of made up to me because that was never my intention that I would be a bad sport,” Brady said after Thursday’s Super Bowl LII rematch at Gillette Stadium. “But, I have a lot of respect for Nick and Carson [Wentz], all those quarterbacks, and that team and the way they played. They’re a great team.”

Foles seconded Brady’s comments in his own post-game press conference, saying he had nothing but respect for the five-time Super Bowl champion and that the media “made a big deal” out of the lack of a handshake after this year’s national championship game.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

“I think everyone’s made a big deal about it. There’s a lot of craziness. I’ve always respected Tom, I met Tom several times and it was great to see him,” said Foles of Brady. “He’s a heck of a player, one of the greatest of all time, and you know, to say hi, that’s what quarterbacks do after games. I know everyone made a big deal of the Super Bowl, but the Super Bowl’s chaos after. But he was nice, as he always is, so I wished him the best of luck this season.”

Besides Foles, Philadelphia lost several other players to injury: among them were tight ends Richard Rodgers and Joshua Perkins, receivers Bryce Treggs and Kamar Aiken and defensive back Stephen Roberts.

The Philadelphia Eagles are being very careful with their franchise quarterback, as they have announced that Carson Wentz will be reporting to training camp Wednesday on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The move is being made in order to make sure that Wentz fully recovers from ACL and LCL tears, which ended his brilliant 2017-18 campaign in a Week 14 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.

SLIDESHOW: 30 BEST SPORTS INSTAGRAMS

It’s unlikely that moving Wentz to the PUP list guarantees that he’ll be ready for Week 1 of the 2018-19 season and is more so just another step in his rehab process. The drastic nature of his injuries have made the rehab a long and arduous process, and the Eagles will likely not take any risks that could compromise Wentz’s progress. However, almost every update on Wentz’s injury made public by the Eagles camp this offseason indicates that he should play in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, which just so happens to be the first game of the NFL season. Just don’t expect him to play much in the preseason.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Although Wentz is almost definitely not going to miss much of the beginning of the season at all, it’s not as if the Eagles will be in bad hands, as Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles is still on the roster. While Foles was fantastic during the postseason, Wentz was masterful during the regular season. He looked to be the clear favorite for the MVP prior to his injury, as he completed 60.2% of his passes for 3,296 yards and 33 touchdowns in just over 12 games. Even though he missed the last three games of the season, those 33 touchdowns were still good for second in the NFL behind Russell Wilson‘s 34.

If Wentz comes back fully healthy and doesn’t miss much of the season, look for Philly to make another epic Super Bowl run.

Nick Foles not only helped lead the Philadelphia Eagles to their first-ever Super Bowl victory in the modern era, but the quarterback was also named the game MVP.

Nick Foles Super Bowl LII MVP facts

The 29-year-old won the hearts of millions when he called his wife Tori (the younger sister of former NFL tight end Evan Moore) “his life” and also held his baby daughter Lily in his arms before accepting the Vince Lombardi Trophy from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Foles was drafted by the Eagles as a third-round pick out of Arizona in 2012, and played with Philadelphia (where he started some games) for three seasons before joining the then-St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs for one-year stints on each team.

Just over two years ago, backup QB Foles was prepared to retire from football age 26 after feeling frustrated with a string of poor performances.

On Sunday, he out-dueled Tom Brady, his New England Patriots counterpart who was called the “GOAT” (Greatest of All Time) after he led the Pats last year to their fifth Super Bowl title since 2001 in an amazing comeback win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Foles put up some impressive stats on Sunday: he threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns in the Eagles’ 41-33 victory in Minneapolis. He even added a 1-yard TD catch on a trick play. The Austin, Texas native replaced Eagles QB Carson Wentz as starter after the standout passer injured his knee late in the regular season.

“The stage is never too big for him,” tight end Zach Ertz — who caught the game-winning touchdown pass — of Foles.

“I didn’t have to be Superman,” Foles said. “I have amazing teammates.” His daughter Lily donned a green Eagles scarf Rosie-the-Riveter style across her head and pink noise-canceling “Beats by Dre” headphones. After Foles pulled a silver chain out from underneath his jersey, Lily began playing with the cross at the end of it.

Among Foles’ amazing passes were a 34-yard lob to Alshon Jeffrey and a 22-yard bullet to Corey Clement.

Foles originally committed to Arizona State but then decided to attend Michigan State. He ultimately transferred to Arizona. The QB is a Christian, and was one of several Eagles players to thank God for allowing the team to finally earn a Super Bowl ring. “All glory to God,” he said.

The Philadelphia Eagles are headed to Super Bowl LII after pounding the Minnesota Vikings 38-7 in Sunday night’s NFC Championship Game.

Eagles vs. Vikings AFC Championship Game highlights

The Eagles will face the New England Patriots — who have reached their third national championship in four years — in a rematch of Super Bowl XXIX in 2005, the last time Philadelphia won the NFC Championship.

Nick Foles threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns, and the Eagles defense forced two key turnovers to earn Sunday’s victory in Philadelphia.

The Patriots defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 24-20 earlier Sunday to reach their eighth Super Bowl in the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era (2001-onwards).

Minnesota took the opening kickoff 75 yards in nine plays, and their drive ended with Case Keenum’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Rudolph. But good things stopped their for the Vikings, as Keenum was unable to reproduce the magic he delivered in last week’s victory over the New Orleans Saints.

On the Vikings’ second possession, Keenum was hit as he attempted a third-down toss and Patrick Robinson intercepted him. Robinson zig-zagged his way into the end zone from about 50 yards away and the thrashing began then.

In the second quarter, LeGarrette Blount — who won the Super Bowl with the Patriots last year — raced over the goal line from 11 yards out to put the Eagles up 14-7.

Then with 3:25 left and Minnesota at the Philadelphia 16, Keenum was strip-sacked by Derek Barnett. Chris Long recovered the fumble on the following drive, and Alshon Jeffery caught a 53-yard TD pass from Foles.

Foles then completed passes of 11, 36 and 13 yards to set up a 38-yard Jake Elliott field goal to close out the half. Torrey Smith then caught a 41-yard TD pass early in the third quarter.

The Eagles are now seeking their first national title since 1960, a trophy they won before the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

Free agent quarterback Nick Foles has agreed to contract terms with the Kansas City Chiefs. Foles would be the backup to 12-year veteran Alex Smith.

Tweet below from ESPN Adam Schefter details the contract agreement between the Chiefs and Foles.

Former Kansas City backup quarterback Chase Daniel followed the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Doug Pederson to the Philadelphia Eagles where Pederson is the new head coach. The other two backups for the Chiefs have not seen any minutes in regular season play. Aaron Murray enters his third season in the league and Tyler Bray enters his fourth season. The Chiefs also have a rookie at the quarterback spot, Kevin Hogan, from Stanford who was selected in the 5th round, 162 overall.

Foles reportedly had interest from the Dallas Cowboys for a backup position after Cowboys current backup Kellen Moore broke his right fibula in training camp practice on Tuesday. According to The Washington Post the Cowboys are now looking to Cleveland Browns’ Josh McCown to fill the spot. The Browns’ might want to be conservative and keep McCown considering Robert Griffin III has not played since 2014.

Kansas City coach Andy Reid was Foles’ first coach in the NFL when he played for the Philadelphia Eagles. When Reid started coaching the Chiefs, Reid was reportedly interested in trading for Foles but Foles stayed with the Eagles and helped them to the 2013 NFC East title. Foles threw 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions.

The Eagles’ traded Foles to the Rams for the 2015 season for Sam Bradford and Foles signed a 2-year $24 million dollar deal, but the Rams had the number 1 pick in the NFL draft in 2016 and selected star quarterback Jared Goff. Foles struggled with in the 2015 season, losing his starting spot mid-November to Rams backup Case Keenum. Foles could likely see the writing on the wall, top pick, poor previous season and he asked to be released from the team in July.

In a move that was expected for months, the Los Angeles Rams released quarterback Nick Foles Wednesday, according to reports from Ian Rapoport and Mike Garofolo of NFL Media.

Foles requested the release.

Rams release Nick Foles Ahead Of Training Camp

The Rams released a statement confirming the sides have chosen to part ways.

“We have been in contact with Nick and his representation throughout the offseason and we feel that this is the best decision for all parties involved,” head coach Jeff Fisher said in a statement released by the Rams. “We appreciate the contributions that Nick has made to our organization in his time as a Ram and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

Foles skipped all offseason workouts held by Los Angeles, both voluntary and mandatory, after the Rams selected California quarterback Jared Goff with the first pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

With Goff in place to serve as the face of the franchise, as well as its future, little room was left for Foles.

Reportedly, LA was vetting suitors for a trade, but no agreement was reached. So, one day before training camp begins for the Rams, Foles is no longer on the roster.

Los Angeles paid Foles a $6 million roster bonus in March, leading some to believe he would stay for the move to Hollywood. But according to Garofolo the Arizona State alum requested his release and the Rams obliged.

He is now an unrestricted free agent.

Foles was acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in the trade for Sam Bradford. LA’s general manager, Les Snead, acknowledged earlier in the offseason that the trade for Foles may not have been the right fit.

“And initially you’re like ‘Hey, we haven’t really thought of (trading Bradford),'” Snead said on a Fox Sports Podcast. “Who’s the answer after him? We’re really looking to try to get something done contractually. Those few teams kept calling and calling, now we’re talking about it internally. Eventually, we made the move.”

Snead explained that the move was not just for that season, but the future of the franchise as a whole.

“We also knew grabbing that extra second-round pick, whoever our quarterback was going to be last year might not work out, so it would be time to start looking again,” Snead said. “We knew by getting that extra second-round pick it would give us the ability to maneuver more in the next draft.”

Snead and the Rams ended up rolling that extra second-rounder into the package that got them the No. 1 overall pick: Goff.

Nick Foles is not comfortable with the Los Angeles Rams selection in this year’s NFL Draft, and when the young buck showed up for Organized Team Activities, Foles gave head coach Jeff Fisher and the rest of the Rams the horns.

After exuding the leadership skills necessary to hold the reins of the Rams budding offense by becoming intimately involved when training began April 18, Foles has cried fowl since L.A. drafted California quarterback Jared Goff with the No. 1 overall pick April 28.

The incumbent quarterback appears to be munching on some sour grapes, refusing to show up since the Rams selected the 6-foot-4, 215-pound rookie, in a move that was expected for nearly a month ahead of the draft, one that became know more for a mask, than for the men realizing their lifelong dreams.

Foles may still be a little butt-hurt over the mid-season benching he received after starting the first nine games of 2015. Fisher called backup, Case Keenum‘s number instead after Foles stumbled to a 4-5 start, throwing a pedestrian seven touchdowns. The former Philadelphia Eagle also fumbled five times, turning the ball over 11 times in nine starts when adding in six interceptions.

Being that OTAs are voluntary, Foles will not be fined for his absence, but it won’t do him any favors with Fisher either, after the signal-caller worked his way out of the head coach’s doghouse this off-season.

Few will likely feel sorrow for Foles, whom collected a $6 million roster bonus in March and is scheduled to make a guaranteed $1.75 million in the 2016 campaign.

The uneasiness highlights a sharp contrast between Foles’ current team from his former stomping grounds in Philly, where Sam Bradford and No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz are getting along swimmingly, according to reports.

Though there where loud whispers that Bradford was looking for a trade after feeling slighted by General Manager Howie Roseman’s pick, skipping two weeks of voluntary workouts in protest, the former Oklahoma Sooner circled the wagons and returned to the team.

Since, the waters of the Schuykill have calmed. It appears that Bradford is spreading the brotherly love in the Eagles’ quarterback room, an odd occurrence when considering Foles and Bradford were traded for each other last off-season and neither quarterback seemed excited about it at the time.

Despite Foles’ on-field protest, he can always fall back on the 175 million pennies he’ll be keeping in his pocket in 2016, no matter if he plays a single snap.

So don’t expect any chirping from Foles, maybe in two weeks he’ll be giving the rookie pointers. Or maybe not.

But seriously, who doesn’t love the drama of a quarterback controversy?

They are in Hollywood now, after all.

The Los Angeles Rams, which just moved back to their original home from St. Louis this year, are going to have to remove at least one player from their depth chart if they want to add to their quarterback position this offseason. This player will most likely be veteran quarterback Nick Foles, who previously played for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Nick Foles: Headed To A Philadephia Reunion?

According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, new Eagles head coach Doug Pederson may be interested in a reunion with Foles as the Eagles go into this offseason. Schefter also explained that although the Eagles has interest in keeping current QB Sam Bradford, it is unlikely they will use the franchise tag to make that happen.

Many others have weighed in on the probability of this reunion. Phillyvoice.com’s Jimmy Kempski argues for a Foles-for-DeMarco Murray (Philadelphia running back) trade.

NJ.com’s Elliott Shorr-Parks is much more skeptical of a possible Foles return.

Either way, the Rams must soon find themselves a better quarterback. Finding a replacement for Foles would be great for the team, because it would save them a lot of money against the salary cap. Of course, this would also make it rather difficult to find a team who would be willing to trade for him.
