Seattle Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor hinted at retirement in a long, vague Twitter post on Sunday, in which he cited his neck injury as a reason for stepping away from football.

Seahawks Safety Kam Chancellor Hints At Retirement

“To walk away from the game by choice is one thing, to walk away from the game because of the risk of paralysis is another,” 30-year-old Chancellor, who played his whole eight-year NFL career with the Seahawks, wrote.

After sustaining a severe neck injury last year, Chancellor revealed in May that he would only keep playing if he was in sufficiently good health.

“If my body says don’t play, I’m not playing. I’ll listen,” Chancellor told 13News Now in May. “I’m a very good listener.”

On Sunday, the safety struck a different tone.

“I’ve played through all types of bruises and injuries at a high level. But this one, I just can’t ignore,” he wrote on Twitter.

Chancellor, a four-time Pro Bowler, signed a three-year, $36 million extension with the Seahawks last summer. According to ESPN, his 2018 salary of $6.8 million “became fully guaranteed in February, and $5.2 million of his $10 million salary for 2019 is guaranteed for injury.”

Seattle signed two safeties this offseason: they re-signed Bradley McDougald to a three-year deal, and also signed  Los Angeles Rams starting safety Maurice Alexander to a one-year contract.

The Seahawks drafted Chancellor as a fifth-round pick out of Virginia Tech in 2010. He helped lead Seattle to a 43-8 Super Bowl victory over the Denver Broncos after the 2013 season.

Adrian Peterson has confirmed that his season is over.

Adrian Peterson Injury news

The Arizona Cardinals running back sustained a neck injury last month in a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has missed Arizona’s last two games. However, Peterson has vowed to return next season.

“The good news is my neck injury doesn’t require surgery, but I’m told by Dr. Robert Watkins that the best thing for me is just more rest than the length of the season,” he said. “Obviously, I’m disappointed about going on IR when my body is still able to produce but I look forward to returning completely healthy for another season in 2018. I’m grateful for the opportunity that the Arizona Cardinals have given me to show that I can still contribute on an NFL team.”

The Cardinals acquired Peterson in October in a trade with New Orleans in exchange for a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2018. The pass rusher is under contract through 2018 on a deal that is set to pay him $3.5 million.

Peterson rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns in his Cardinals’ debut Oct. 15, a 38-33 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After rushing for less than 30 yards the following two weeks in losses to Houston and Seattle, Peterson gained 79 yards on 20 carries during a 27-24 victory over Jacksonville.

He is now the 14th different player Arizona has placed on injured reserve this season.

David Johnson remains the Cardinals’ No. 1 running back, although he went on injured reserve after sustaining a fractured left wrist in the season opener at Detroit.

Ravens LB Zach Orr Retires at 24 Due to Neck Condition

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Zach Orr has improved significantly over his three years thus far in the NFL, where he’s gone from undrafted rookie to the team’s leading tackler.

Ravens LB Zach Orr, 24, Announces Retirement due to neck condition

A congenital spine and neck condition, however, forced him to announce his retirement on Friday.

A CAT scan after the season revealed the first cervical vertebrae at the top of the 24-year-old’s spine never fully formed. which puts him at a higher risk for fatality and paralysis, Orr stated.

“When I first found out the news, it was shocking,” Orr said. “I was sad, disappointed, upset, because football is something I’ve done my whole life, and something I love, and still love to this day.”

A first-time starter after entering training camp as a backup, Orr compiled 132 tackles this season, including two on special teams. Orr missed the season finale, though his single-season total was the team’s third-highest in the past 10 years, only behind Ray Lewis’ performance in 2010 (139 tackles) and 2009 (134).

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome stated the team had already discussed giving Orr a tender as a restricted free agent, which would likely have landed him more than $2.5 million in 2017, with a potential contract extension.

Newsome called Orr the most “inspirational” player he’s met in the past three years.

“I feel like my hands were kind of tied,” Orr said. “I won’t be able to pass a physical. If I could pass a physical, who knows? I would probably take that chance.”

Orr is not the only NFL player to abruptly retire at a young age in recent years. One notable example is San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland, who retired after a strong rookie season, citing concussion worries.

Orr sustained a neck injury during the Week 6 game at Pittsburgh and continued to feel pain in his neck. An MRI revealed a herniated disk.

The youngster didn’t learn the extent of his condition until his end-of-season examination.

“Everybody that broke down the situation to me were at a loss for words,” Orr said. “They were trying to figure out how I was playing football this long without anything major happening. I look at it as a blessing.”

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Orr is the 13th NFL player since the beginning of 2015 to retire at age 25 or younger.

Orr was selected by Baltimore as an undrafted rookie out of North Texas in 2014 and became one of the team’s top special-teams players by his second season.

“I’m very proud that he’s been a Raven,” coach John Harbaugh said.

Harbaugh, defensive coordinator Dean Pees and linebackers coach Don “Wink” Martindale continually lauded Orr’s intelligence, work ethic and commitment to the team.

Orr stated he is considering remaining in the game as a coach, and Harbaugh said the Ravens would be interested in bringing him on their staff.

“Walking away, I can be at peace with this because I don’t have any regrets, on the field or off the field,” Orr said. “I don’t have any of that in my body.”
