MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - DECEMBER 12: Luka Doncic #77 of the Dallas Mavericks gets a rebound during a game between Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons at Arena Ciudad de Mexico on December 12, 2019 in Mexico City, Mexico.

The Dallas Mavericks may be down superstar Luka Doncic for a couple of weeks has he suffered a moderate right ankle sprain. While driving to the basket, he stepped on Miami Heat guard Kendrick Nunn‘s foot, limping into the crowd before going down.

The Mavericks lost the game 122-118 to the Heat.

However, Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said on Monday that the Slovenian small forward — the third overall draft pick out of Real Madrid in 2018 — is already recovering from his injury quickly.

“He is responding well to treatment,” Carlisle said before Dallas’ game against the Milwaukee Bucks, per ESPN’s Malika Andrews. “He is progressing well.”

The Rookie of the Year last season, Doncic has proved himself worthy of an MVP run. Averaging 29.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and 8.9 assists per game, the 20-year-old has made quite the name for himself and leads the league with eight triple-doubles.

Backup point guards Jalen Brunson and J.J. Barea will have their work cut out for them as Doncic recovers and reserve guard Delon Wright could have an expanded role, however still recovering from a strained right adductor.

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said, “Luka Doncic will not travel to Milwaukee due to a right ankle sprain. He will stay in Dallas with Casey Smith and receive treatment. There will be no further updates until Wednesday night.” Smith is the Mavericks director of player health and performance.

The Mavs have won 11 of their last 13 games, but face a tough schedule with the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and the Toronto Raptors over the next week.

Despite optimism that the injury is not too severe, the Mavs will need to find solutions to this problem as a demanding schedule looms over them.

Doncic also recently tried his hand at speaking Spanish during an NBA game in Mexico City:

Last week, a report surfaced claiming Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry could miss the rest of the season. However, the Warriors were quick to refute this claim.

On Monday, Curry addressed the media for the first time since breaking a bone in his hand. He emphasized that he expects to rejoin his team on the court before the end of the season.

“I definitely expect to be back and playing,” said the three-time NBA champion. “I don’t know when exactly but sometime in the early spring.”

Curry also revealed that as a part of his rehabilitation plan, he will need a second surgery in order to remove the pins that were placed in his hand to aid recovery.

“I’ve never really broken anything or had a hand injury or anything like that before.” Curry said, before revealing that the injury included some nerve irritation. “That’s kinda why it took so long for the diagnosis because I had to go through so many tests. With nerves it’s kind of tricky, I can either come back quickly or be out a sustainable amount of time with the surgery and swelling of the injury… Obviously when you’re dealing with hands, that’s where it gets tricky in terms of your feel and all of that.”

In the meantime, however, six-time All-Star Curry avows that he has been working on bettering himself to ensure his effectivity upon his return to the hardwood.

“I’ve been kind of treating it like a mini offseason, work on your body, get some rest, build a new foundation for what type of player I want to be when I come back from injury, not miss a beat, maybe being better than before,” he added.

Some downtime for Curry could be a good thing for him personally, as it could allow him time to recover and get stronger. The Warriors as a whole, however, have struggled so far this season. Nevertheless, Curry was quick to point out that recent struggles do not define Golden State as a team or as an organization.

“I just love the fight. I think Coach (Steve) Kerr mentioned it,” said Curry. “You’re not just going to sit and be OK with losing or whatever the narrative is. They’re out there fighting every single night.”

If one thing is for certain here, it is that the Warriors organization, fans and Curry himself are all eager to see #30 return to the court and sport the blue-and-gold jersey.

“I love to play basketball, have fun. I know Klay [Thompson] does, too,” the two-time NBA MVP added. “We’re some caged animals ready to get unleashed back to what we do.”

As of now, Curry can be expected to return roughly in the early spring. However, that timeline is certainly subject to potential changes between now and then.

James Johnson Dunks on Steph Curry in Heat's 105-97 Loss to Warriors

The Warriors haven’t had the greatest start to their season. Things only got worse Wednesday night when the team announced that star point guard Stephen Curry suffered a broken left hand against the Phoenix Suns.

With around eight-and-a-half minutes left in the third quarter, Curry drove and collided with Suns center Aron Baynes. Curry fell to the floor and Baynes landed on his left arm. Curry drew a foul on the play but couldn’t shoot the free throws. He headed to the locker room, where he had X-rays that confirmed the break.

“Aron Baynes came up after the game and just wanted to know how Steph was doing,” said Warriors coach Steve Kerr. “You could tell he felt really bad. It’s just a random basketball play, so stuff happens.”

The team has no further information on the injury and simply said Curry will undergo an MRI and CT scan Thursday to determine if surgery is necessary. A timetable for the injury is expected shortly afterwards.

The injury is another blow to a team already struggling for an identity outside of Kevin Durant‘s departure this past offseason. With Klay Thompson recovering from an ACL tear and Curry’s injury, the Warriors are a new-look team at this point and not a good one.

“Of course it hurts knowing that Steph Curry’s down,” said Warriors rookie Eric Paschall, who had a team-high 20 points in his first career start Wednesday. “… That’s a very, very valuable piece of our team, but I feel like we’re going to stay positive.”

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James also wished Curry a fast recovery in a tweet on Thursday.

The Warriors are 1-3 on the season and are sporting one of the worst defenses in the league. They face the San Antonio Spurs on Friday at 10:30 p.m. EST.
