The New York Mets continue to struggle after getting swept by the Colorado Rockies.

The Mets had won two straight games heading into the series with the Rockies, after losing 12 straight games. This means the Mets are 2-15 in their last 17 games, with an overall record of 9-19.

The Mets played a doubleheader on April 26 after the game scheduled for the day before got rained out. The Mets lost the first game of the series on April 24, 4-3.

Nolan McLean started the first game of the doubleheader. He only gave up one earned run in five innings. Despite this, he took the loss because Rockies starter Jose Quintana also allowed only one run. The Mets’ bullpen gave up one run, while the Rockies’ bullpen gave up no runs.

Jake McCarthy had two hits and an RBI for the Rockies. Tyrone Taylor had a hit and drove in the Mets’ only run.

Kodei Senga started the second game of the doubleheader. The Rockies scored three runs off him in 2 2/3 innings. Although the Mets bullpen didn’t give up any runs, the Rockies got a seven-inning shutout from starter Chase Dollander to get the win.

The Rockies only had four hits, with three of them coming off Senga. However, Hunter Goodman’s two-run home run extended the Rockies’ lead to 3-0. The Mets outhit the Rockies six to four, but they couldn’t score any runs. Carson Benge had two of the Mets’ six hits.

Very little has gone right for the Mets this season. Their one bright spot has been starter Clay Holmes. The two-time All-Star has a 2.10 ERA in five starts. The Mets moved him to the starting rotation in 2025.

The Mets will play the Washington Nationals in their next series starting April 28.

The New York Mets traded for a former All-Star in hopes of getting back into the playoffs.

On January 20, the Mets acquired Luis Robert Jr. from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Luisangel Acuna and Truman Pauley. After trading away Brandon Nimmo earlier in the offseason, the Mets had a hole in the outfield.

Robert made his MLB debut in 2020. He had a strong season in a COVID-19-shortened 2020 season and finished second in American League Rookie of the Year voting. His next couple of seasons were plagued by injuries, limiting him to under 100 games.

2023 was the year everything came together. He played in 145 games and finished the season with a 5.3 WAR. He was the bright spot on an otherwise bad White Sox team.

2024 was another injury-riddled season for Robert Jr. However, his play also nosedived. He was never known for his walking abilities, but his on-base percentage dipped to just .278. In 2025, his power began to show a decline. The former Home Run Derby contestant had just a .364 slugging percentage.

His saving grace at this point is his defense. In 2025, he had seven outs above average, which ranked him in the top 12 among center fielders. This is despite him missing 50 games.

Robert Jr. will be joining superstar Juan Soto and top prospect Carson Benge in the Mets outfield. Benge is talented but has played just 24 games at Triple-A.

New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said he will talk to Mets star Juan Soto about hustling out of the batter’s box following the Mets’ 3-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Monday.

Soto hit an almost home run line drive, watching the ball bounce off the Green Monster for a single that likely should’ve been more.

“He thought he had it,” Mendoza said. “In this ballpark with that wall right there, you gotta get out of the box. We’ll discuss that.”

Soto stole second base and ended up being left stranded on third. He had a different view of what happened.

“I think I’ve been hustling pretty hard,” Soto said. “If you see it today, you could tell.”

After losing four of their last five games and the Philadelphia Phillies winning four straight games, the Mets are no longer in first place in the NL East.

Soto is batting .246 with eight home runs this season. He signed a 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets in the offseason.

Despite the lofty contract, many have been disappointed by Soto’s performance through nearly 50 games. His apparent lack of urgency getting out of the batter’s box is another added factor.

“I’m really happy to know where I’m going to be for the next 15 years.”

So said the biggest offseason story in MLB as he arrived at spring training this week. Since his signing to the New York Mets in December, Juan Soto has continually expressed his confidence in the team and his belief that it was the best place for him to win a World Series.

When asked about Soto’s crosstown move and comments during his introductory press conference, New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge expressed little surprise.

“I wasn’t too surprised by it. I think that’s where he wanted to be. I think that’s where is best for him and his family,” Judge said. “He got a pretty nice deal over there. I mean, you can’t say no to that. But I’m happy for you.”

The Yankees reached the World Series with Soto and Judge in 2024, eventually falling short in Game 5 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. While Judge had a spectacular regular season, he hit a brutal .184 with 14 strikeouts during the postseason and dropped a fly ball that allowed the Dodgers to sneak back into the series winner.

“Definitely coming in hungry, if not hungrier than in years past,” he told reporters. The Yankees have also been bolstered by other big-name free-agent signings Max Fried, Cody Bellinger and Devin Williams, among others.

The Mets, though, have probably had the second-splashiest offseason in the league (presumptively behind the Dodgers), adding Soto and Clay Holmes, as well as making multiple significant re-signings. Owner Steve Cohen hasn’t been shy about courting acquisitions or opening his pocketbook in creating a culture of winning.

When asked about Soto’s belief that the rival Mets were the best place for him to win a World Series, though, Judge cut the thread short quickly.

“That’s his opinion,” he said. “He can say what he wants. I definitely disagree with him.”

Both teams made their respective league championships in 2024. Now, as the ramp-up to the 2025 season begins, we’ll prepare to see whose confidence is proven right.

Contract negotiations between the New York Mets and first baseman Pete Alonso are reportedly deteriorating as General Manager David Stearns holds his ground on a short-term offer. The team is actively considering next steps in the event that Alonso walks away.

League-wide interest in Alonso is less fervent than many expected, which has given the Mets more leverage in negotiations. Though it is unclear exactly what their offer is, the deal on the table reportedly contains an opt-out clause after one year. Total compensation would likely be less than $200 million.

The team is clearly intent on keeping the All-Star first baseman while managing the risk of decline. There are several other teams interested in Alonso, but none have any reported interest in giving Alonso and agent Scott Boras the long-term contract they are asking for.

Alonso’s 2024 season, which could have convinced teams to take more interest when he hit free agency, was a mixed bag. He hit .240 with 34 home runs in the regular season, providing his typical power but struggling immensely in key moments.

That narrative flipped on its head in Game 3 of the N.L. Wild Card against the Brewers, when he hit a season-saving three-run home run off closer Devin Williams to lead the Mets to the NLDS. He continued to hit well throughout the Mets’ surprise playoff run to the NLCS. At age 30, he is generally considered to be one of the best sluggers in baseball, but his days at first base are generally considered to be running short. Further regression at the plate is also concerning for many teams.

Mets owner Steve Cohen is reportedly supporting Stearns in negotiations, favoring the cost-efficient approach to Alonso over a more heavy-handed solution. Since shelling out to secure slugging outfielder Juan Soto with a record-breaking $765 contract earlier this off-season, Cohen and Stearns have since embraced more nuanced options to cultivate a well-rounded 2025 roster.

On Thursday, the same day that negotiations with Alonso were reported to be deteriorating, the Mets re-signed outfielder/designated hitter Jesse Winker to a one-year, $7.5 million deal. Coming to terms with Winker allows the team to free up roster space elsewhere. New York has reportedly been considering ways to trade outfielder Starling Marte for bullpen pieces. Free agent lefthander Tanner Scott has also been named as a key target.

If Alonso doesn’t return to Queens in 2025, third baseman Mark Vientos is expected to try and make the transition across the diamond. In his first full season with the team, the 25-year-old proved himself as one of the league’s most talented young hitters while making smaller strides in the field. Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio and Luisangel Acuña could all take reps at third to replace Vientos.

The New York Mets signed righthanded pitcher Griffin Canning to a one-year, $4.25 million deal on Wednesday. Canning made 31 starts with the Los Angeles Angels last season, earning a 6-13 record and 5.19 ERA.

Beyond the obviously titanic $765 million contract the Mets gave slugging outfielder Juan Soto, most of the team’s moves this off-season have been nuanced depth moves. Canning is expected to serve as a spot-starter in New York. He is the typical sort of project favored by Mets General Manager David Stearns, who signed struggling starters Sean Manaea and Luis Severino to short-term deals and reaped significant benefits last season.

Canning is coming off a rough year with the Los Angeles Angels, but it was also his first full season in an injury-riddled career. In his previous four years with Los Angeles, he had only surpassed 100 innings in a season once, and has gradually become more durable as he has advanced in the league.

If Canning can improve and develop with coaching in New York, he may have a prime opportunity to earn starts in the rotation. The team is still expected to sign a premier starter, but the names currently ahead of Canning do not form an awe-inspiring unit on paper.

Kodai Senga, David Peterson and new righthander Frankie Montas form a solid trio, but the picture from there is unclear. Longtime Yankees closer Clay Holmes is reportedly slotted as the fourth starter for now. Beyond him, Paul Blackburn, Tylor Megill and Jose Butto will likely vie for time on the mound in spring training. Canning could easily join that race if he can take a step forward on his West Coast form.

With several months remaining in the off-season, the Mets still have a lot of moving pieces to either secure or replace. The team is reportedly in contact with Manaea, the resurgent ace last season, and Pete Alonso, the slugger who could blaze a devastating trail in a lineup with Soto. Signing Soto was a massive win for the front office, but there are still big moves that need to be made before the team can gain any direction in 2025.

After months of anticipation, on Sunday night former Yankees outfielder Juan Soto signed a 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets.

The deal also provides a player opt-out option in year four, which the team would be able to void by adding $4 million every season. The total potential value of the contract comes to a whopping $805 million.

Soto, who finished third in American League MVP voting in the 2024 season, attracted massive interest when he hit free agency Oct. 31. Teams including the Mets, Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays made bids, leading to an agonizing, month-and-a-half long process fraught with rumors and uncertainty not least for the Yankees, who Soto had guided to the World Series just a couple months prior.

“I’m gonna be available for all 30 teams,” said Soto at the time.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that each of those teams would be lucky to have him. Soto hit .288 / .419 / .988 this past season, with 41 home runs and 109 runners batted in. Even with his questionable outfield defense, he has accumulated over 36 wins above replacement over the course of his career, and is a five-time Silver Slugger and four-time All Star. It was his hitting that made him a sought-after target last year as the Padres looked to trade him, and this year was no different.

Soto signed a one-year, $31 million deal with the Yankees before the 2024 season. That same offseason would see Shohei Ohtani sign his record-breaking 10-year, $700 million deal although over 90% of the money is deferred until 2033.

This offseason, the Yankees aimed to keep Soto, who had meshed easily with other franchise cornerstones Aaron Judge and Gerrit Cole. “I know what’s expected of me,” Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner told reporters.

The team’s final offer for Soto was 16 years, $760 million. It wasn’t cash alone, though, that spurred his decision.

When Mets owner Steve Cohen, worth an estimated $21.3 billion, bought the team in 2020, he promised to boost its payroll. In courting Soto, he hosted the outfielder at two of his personal residences and attempted to create a personal relationship, deviating from the traditional Powerpoint.

On top of that, though, the Mets were aware of certain gripes that Soto had with the Yankees organization.

According to the New York Post‘s Jon Heyman, Soto was allegedly “upset early in the year by an overzealous Yankees security guy who disallowed a family member and his chef/driver from certain areas” in response, the Mets presented themselves as familiar and accommodating. The Yankees also reportedly refused Soto his own suite (even Aaron Judge and Derek Jeter pay) meanwhile, Soto’s new contract includes a suite at Citi Field for family.

Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, emphasized Soto’s attention to the commitment of ownership, saying, “[Soto] want[s] to know that besides [him], there’s going to be a great number of support on the part of the owner that he has the same desire to win that [he does]. [He’s] going to commit [his] career to it, and [he] want[s] the owner to commit his resources to it.”

Cohen has shown that he’s willing to go all-in, boosting his team to a top-five payroll in the MLB last season. Those 2024 Mets made a surprise run to the NLCS, beating the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies along the way.

With Soto locked down, they’ll be looking to go further.

The New York Mets are on the back foot in the NLCS after a brutal Game 3 loss at home against the Dodgers. With two more games remaining at Citi Field, the team will have to find more ways to compete with their backs once again up against the wall.

The Los Angeles Dodgers received a lot of credit for their offensive performance in an 8-0 Game 3 victory, but the truth of it is New York took itself out of the game early. Los Angeles scored its first two runs on just one hit, as Mets starter Luis Severino lost control of the strike zone while the team suffered multiple fielding miscues in the cold.

New York had its chances to respond against Walker Buehler but squandered several opportunities to even the score. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the second, Francisco Alvarez and Francisco Lindor both struck out to end the inning. The young catcher arguably had the better opportunity with just one out, but Lindor’s shortcoming had a greater impact. The presumptive N.L. MVP runner-up has been a rock for the team for months, and seeing him fall short in a big spot seemed to take the air out of fans and players alike.

After a two-run home run by Kike Hernandez in the top of the sixth inning, the Mets performed a tactical retreat, leaving in Tylor Megill to eat innings on the mound and finish off the game. The Dodgers capitalized and scored another four runs, including a titanic three-run shot by Shohei Ohtani, but the additional scoring was largely meaningless and the Mets did little to prevent it.

Entering Game 4, the problems for New York are clear. On the mound, they’re walking far too many batters, which is also leading to sloppy defense. Dodgers batters are not chasing pitches like the Phillies did in the NLDS. At the plate, they’re beginning to have trouble with runners in scoring position in a postseason defined by timely hitting.

If the Mets lose to the Dodgers, it would conform to the general consensus entering the series. Many people who picked the Dodgers to win the series also picked them to win in overwhelming fashion. Box scores of Games 1 and 3 suggest that the Mets have been blown out twice, but they created and wasted chances in both games and gave in early to spare the bullpen. In Game 2, Mark Vientos capitalized with the bases loaded and the team won in commanding fashion.

New York still has two games remaining at home, but to have a realistic chance of winning the series, the team likely has to win Game 4 on Thursday. Going down 3-1 with two of three games remaining in Los Angeles would effectively end it. At some point, the team will have to win two in a row to get back into winning position. The sooner it starts, the better.

Jose Quintana will face off against Yoshinobu Yamamoto in a pitchers’ duel that could decide the season. Quintana has been phenomenal for the better part of three months, though he does his best work while getting batters to chase pitches outside the zone. Yamamoto has been effective for the Dodgers since returning from injury in September but hasn’t gone longer than five innings. He also got rocked for five runs by the Padres in Game 1 of the NLDS, though he settled down to help put down San Diego for good in Game 5.

While the Dodgers’ story this season has revolved around billion-dollar expectations and dreams of another championship, the Mets’ story has been one of wildly unexpected and exciting success. This is the first time the Mets have trailed in a series this postseason, but the team is still on very familiar ground, fighting from behind. New York clawed its way back into contention for months during the regular season, and every player on the team has seemingly had a massive moment in recent weeks. If the story ends here, the season will still be an overwhelming success. But if this team has anything, it’s grit, and there’s still some road ahead.

The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 in Game 4 of the NLDS Wednesday, wiping out the NL East division winners to take the series in four games and advance to the NLCS.

Some have chalked it up to the Grimace effect. Some believe that Jose Iglesias’ music career was the spark. Some call it “devil magic.” In all likelihood, it’s simply a team finding the right energy at the perfect time. Heading into the penultimate round of the playoffs, it feels like the Mets can beat anyone.

After two weeks of putting down favored teams with long rallies and base-to-base hitting, the Mets knocked out the Phillies with one mighty swing. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, shortstop Francisco Lindor sent a fastball from reliever Jeff Hoffman sailing over the right-center field wall for a go-ahead grand slam.

As Lindor was walking up to the plate for his decisive at-bat, Mets fans greeted him warmly with a raucous round of MVP chants. In their hearts, there has been no one better this season. As he trotted around the bases, head down and focused, the crowd’s reaction was indecipherable and deafening — pandemonium. Fulfilling the dream of every baseball fan, the star player delivered again in the most important moment of the season.

“Nobody has us anywhere close to this moment,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said after the game. “And for us to be celebrating here at home in front of our fan base, for Lindor to come through in that way, what a story. I keep saying it.”

That’s been the key to the Mets’ torrid stretch since the end of September. From a wild win over the Braves to clinch a playoff spot to a miraculous Wild Card victory over the Brewers to a commanding series win over the Phillies, New York has benefitted from at least one dramatic and heroic moment from nearly every player on the roster.

It’s impossible to forget that this team started in the gutter. They started the season 0-5 and were 11 games under .500 by the end of May. Their meteoric rise from there is well-documented, but the most recent stretch has been other-worldly. Since Sept. 30, the Mets have played in eight massively important games and won six of them. They won five of them coming from behind. Any one of those wins would define a normal team’s season. It has all happened in less than two weeks.

Lindor, the NL MVP in many fans’ hearts, was the one who started it all when he hit an out-of-nowhere homer against the Braves, putting the Mets back ahead 8-7 to earn a spot in the dance. He ended it in the NLDS, sticking the dagger in another bitter NL East rival. The Mets squandered two bases-loaded opportunities earlier in Game 4 and seemed to be deflating somewhat, but Lindor got it all back at once.

“I felt like I got a good one early and I missed it,” Lindor said after the game. “I was just trying to do what the other boys did, which is get on base.”

Lindor wasn’t alone Wednesday. He hasn’t been alone in a month. The Mets have won big game after big game with each and every hand on deck. Mark Vientos, the rookie who wasn’t even on the roster to start the season, is currently batting .429 with two home runs and seven RBIs in the playoffs.

Pete Alonso, the once-hapless slugger, was the one who brought the Mets back from the dead against Milwaukee, hitting a three-run home run in the ninth to put New York ahead for good. He hit two more home runs against Philadelphia and is back as a force in the lineup. Further down, it would be quicker to name the players who haven’t had at least one big moment since the end of September. The entire lineup hit a groove at the same time.

Once a major concern, the Mets’ starting rotation also performed at an elite level in the NLDS. Sean Manaea’s seven-inning gem in Game 3 was the highlight, but Luis Severino and Jose Quintana competed well in Games 2 and 4 as well. Injured ace Kodai Senga provided a highly promising cameo in Game 1, and David Peterson stepped up in long relief to contribute to two of the team’s three series wins.

With the Dodgers and Padres heading into Game 5 of their NLDS matchup Friday, the Mets will have the advantage of rest over an opponent for the first time since this postseason tale began. The NLCS begins on Sunday, giving the Mets three full days off. This could do wonders for a flagging bullpen, one that has had to battle through countless close games in recent weeks.

Regardless of whether the Padres or Dodgers move on to the NLCS, it is likely that the Mets will be underdogs again. The Dodgers have a different level of star power with Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman in the lineup. The Padres are nearly as hot as New York, electrified by incredible play from Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill

For the Mets to this point, however, the caliber of the opponent has only mattered to an extent. They’ve faced great pitching and battled. They’ve taken advantage of leaky bullpens. They’ve thrown great pitches to beat great hitters. They’ve played their game. If that’s devil magic, then this team has been a nightmare. For the city of New York, it’s an immense vibe, a cultural moment already being marked as historic. But the story isn’t over yet.

The New York Mets completed their second two-game sweep of the New York Yankees Wednesday night, taking the fourth and final Subway Series game of 2024 in dominant 12-3 fashion. As the Mets rallied behind a white-hot offense, the Yankees suffered yet another categorical failure in a once-hopeful season.

After falling to the Mets 3-2 on Tuesday night, which included shaky reliever Jake Diekman striking out likely A.L. MVP Aaron Judge to earn the save, the Yankees anticipated a momentum swing Wednesday. Reigning A.L. Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole was facing off against Sean Manaea, giving the Yankees a decided advantage.

At first, they seemed to be well on their way. Gleyber Torres hit a solo home run off Manaea to give the Yanks a 1-0 lead. Meanwhile, Cole retired the first eight Mets batters he faced. Mets outfielder Tyrone Taylor eventually broke through with a solo shot of his own, but Juan Soto quickly responded with his own homer, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead going into the fourth inning.

Then the dam broke. The Mets scored 11 unanswered runs in an offensive barrage. Cole ended the night allowing six runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings. Pete Alonso and Mark Vientos both hit home runs, and Francisco Lindor hit one from each side of the plate. Every single Mets batter reached first in the game, and Brandon Nimmo was the only that did not do so with a hit.

Jeff McNeil stayed hot with two hits and Taylor, who has been struggling in recent weeks, finished the night 3-for-5. Taylor is now 6-for-9 with two home runs in his career against the Yankees ace.

“I was focused on being ready for the heater,’’ Taylor said after the game. “I’m thankful to have success off him.”

While the Yankees have struggled immensely in the past two months to squeeze production out of hitters not named Judge or Soto, the Mets have slowly built one of the deepest lineups in the league. In Wednesday’s game, the Yankees got two total hits from players batting fourth to ninth. The Mets got nine, including three home runs and six RBIs.

With a 53-48 record, the Mets exited the game with sole control of the second N.L. Wild Card spot, completing a sudden turnaround that began when the team was 11 games under .500 in May. The Yankees, on the other hand, are still 60-44 but have gone 15-25 in their last 40 games. The team has lost control of the A.L. East division to the Orioles and is slowly losing ground in the Wild Card race as well.

For many, the Mets are still not yet a serious playoff contender, as the team still has questions to answer concerning the starting rotation and bullpen. But through sustained offensive firepower, the Mets have managed to rebuild themselves this summer and put management in a position to buy at the trade deadline. In four victories against the Yankees in 2024, they scored 36 runs.

The Yankees, once World Series contenders after an extremely hot start, are slipping into obscurity despite holding one of the best records in baseball. The team has not recovered from injuries to Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton, and while the lineup has frozen over, the starting pitching has regressed as well. The front office is still preparing for an active trade deadline, but there seem to be too many holes to plug.

“Nobody has higher expectations than us in that frickin’ room,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the Subway Series sweep. “We’re pissed off. We got to play better. This has gone on long enough. It’s very frustrating to go through. But I also know we’re competing our asses off. We just got to make sure we continue to walk in with the right level of edge and willingness to compete because no one’s going to pull us out of this but us.”
