Another MLB All-Star game is in the books as the American League came out on top, 5-3 over the National League. Tuesday night’s victory was the AL’s 48th overall win and the NL’s 44th loss. Of course, people focus on the known names when watching – Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto were some key names that participated.

Rookie phenom Paul Skenes pitched a scoreless first inning, only surrendering a seven-pitch walk to Soto – the walk sent Judge to the plate where Skenes forced the Yankees outfielder to hit a first-pitch groundout to third. Ohtani opened up the scoring through a no-doubt three-run home run that gave the NL a 3-0 lead in the third inning.

The NL’s advantage was shortly lived as Soto hit a double to cut the lead to 3-2. Then, Cleveland’s David Fry tied the score by hitting a two-out single that brought Soto home from second. Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran broke the stalemate with a two-run blast off of Reds reliever Hunter Greene, putting the AL ahead, 5-3. Duran won the All-Star game’s MVP as a result of his home run.

2024 marked Duran’s first career All-Star game as he earned the nod through a solid campaign. The outfielder has a .284 batting average with ten home runs, 41 RBIs and 22 stolen bases. Duran also leads the AL in doubles, with 27, while his ten triples lead the majors. Fry also made the all-star game for the first time after spending five years in the minor leagues. The 28-year-old currently hits .317, in addition to hitting eight long balls and batting in 30 runs.

Athletics closer Mason Miller made history with a 103.6 mph pitch, the fastest pitch ever thrown in the All-Star game. Emmanuel Clase was credited with the save as he preserved the 5-3 lead – the Guardians’ hurler finished the ninth striking out Pete Alonso and Bryan Reynolds, forcing Elly De La Cruz to groundout and giving up a single to Jackson Merrill.

While Major League Baseball’s rule changes recently have improved fan engagement across the board early in the 2023 season, this progress did not transfer well to the league’s premier mid-season event. This year’s All-Star Game received the lowest ratings ever recorded, dipping below the previous low set in 2022.

According to Sports Media Watch, an outlet tracking sports viewership, “Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game averaged a record-low 3.9 rating and 7.01 million viewers on FOX (7.09M across all platforms), down 7% from the previous lows set last year (4.2, 7.51M).” Though it is a sign of stagnating public sentiment about All-Star Games in general, it does not seem to reflect attention toward baseball as a whole, which has increased in 2023.

Though this year’s All-Star Game received the lowest rating ever, it still received more viewers than any other American sport’s version of the event (Pro Bowl, NBA All-Star Game, etc.). Moreover, viewers in younger demographics have expressed an increased willingness to watch the sport after league officials instituted rules to make games faster. Attendance and local ratings have both increased moderately on average across the league.

Instead of marking a failure for MLB, less attention on the All-Star Game mirrors a similar lack of care in the concept itself. Likely due to a lack of physicality and decreased injury risk, MLB typically hosts a more competitive all-star event, and Tuesday’s 3-2 game lived up to the billing. Other leagues, namely the NBA and NFL, have tinkered endlessly with their formats to make all-star events more entertaining, adopting schoolyard-esque rules to embrace the casual nature of the event and promote interpersonal competition. Oddly enough, however, MLB’s steadfastness to a traditional game between its two leagues still outpaces its competitors.

Problems with all-star games in sports have been listed ad nauseam by this point and include a lack of player participation, lack of competition and overall meaninglessness. The larger problem, however, is that these events are integral to many traditional sporting schedules, preceding the Super Bowl in the NFL and serving as mid-season markers for the NBA, NHL and MLB. Officials have tried and failed to refresh the events and replacing them seems impossible.

While MLB struggles to crack the code on the All-Star Game, its improvements to regular season play have made a difference early on. The second half of the season should usher in even greater returns as the playoff race intensifies in many divisions.

For Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes, a ring in October can wait a little while longer. Following the All-Star Game, in which he made his first career appearance, the lefthander proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Alondra Esteras Russy, who said yes after a seven-year relationship. In an Instagram post, Cortes described becoming an All-Star and fiance as two dreams coming true at once.

“Through ups and downs we manage to keep each other happy,” Cortes said. “I thank you for being by my side for every struggle I’ve had but also all the success.”

Beyond an eventful All-Star break, Cortes has had a stellar season for the Yankees, who are currently dominating the AL East with a 64-28 record. Behind presumptive ace and fellow All-Star Gerrit Cole, he has taken on an extremely effective complementary role and excelled at times. In 17 starts, the fifth-year pitcher has compiled a 7-3 record with a 2.63 ERA and 99 strikeouts. A surefire All-Star, he threw one scoreless frame in the game while striking out two batters.

Though little is known about Cortes’ fiancee, who typically stays out of the spotlight, posts on social media indicate that the couple met in 2015. She has been with him for his entire career, from his humble beginnings as a 23-year-old reliever for the Baltimore Orioles to all three of his stints with the Yankees, as well as one in Seattle. She regularly posts photos from the stands on social media, and like Cortes, she also took to Instagram to announce the engagement.

With a postseason run coming for the Yankees and a wedding in the near future as well, Cortes’ good string of fortune seems likely to continue for some time. Once a struggling pitcher bouncing between teams in search of starting opportunities, he is now a key contributor to a World Series contender. Nothing is ever certain in baseball, but regardless of the result at the end of the season, there will be at least one fan of Cortes in the stands who will never waver.

The MLB All-Star starters have been revealed. This season was the first time the league implemented a two-part voting process. The first phase of the voting had three finalists for each defensive position. Nine outfielders advanced to the second phase of voting as well as a designated hitter in the American League. The second phase of voting determined the All-Star Game’s starters.

The process saw nine first-time All-Stars selected by the fans to start this year’s game. The headliners included San Diego Padres’ shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., Toronto Blue Jays’ first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani, who was voted to start as the AL’s designated hitter.

Mike Trout, who was voted as one of the starting outfielders for the AL, will be unable to play as he is recovering from a strained calf. Toronto leads all teams with three players making the starting lineup.

American League Starters:

  • C- Salvador Perez
  • 1B- Vladimir Guerrero Jr
  • 2B- Marcus Semien
  • 3B- Rafael Devers
  • SS: Xander Bogaerts
  • OF- Mike Trout
  • CF- Aaron Judge
  • LF- Teoscar Hernández
  • DH- Shohei Ohtani

National League Starters:

  • C- Buster Posey
  • 1B- Freddie Freeman
  • 2B- Adam Frazier
  • 3B- Nolan Arenado
  • SS- Fernando Tatis Jr.
  • CF- Ronald Acuña Jr.
  • LF- Jesse Winker
  • RF- Nick Castellanos

The National League team will be coached for the third consecutive year by Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, while Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash will coach the AL.

The rest of the MLB’s All-Stars will be named on July 4. Pitchers and reserves for each team will be determined by a process that considers selections made by the Commissioner’s Office and the player ballot choices.

On Tuesday, the Colorado Rockies officially became the host of the 2021 MLB All-Star Game.

“Major League Baseball is grateful to the Rockies, the City of Denver, and the State of Colorado for their support of this summer’s All-Star Game,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “We appreciate their flexibility and enthusiasm to deliver a first-class event for our game and the region. We look forward to celebrating our sport’s best players and entertaining fans around the world.”

“We are confident that our organization along with the city, state, and the Denver Sports Commission, are capable of putting on this premier event in a relatively quick time frame because of the preparations that had already been done,” said Rockies Chief Operating Officer Greg Feasel. “Summer in Colorado is something everyone in the country should experience, and we embrace this opportunity to show off our beautiful ballpark and everything our city, state, and region have to offer.”

Last week, Manfred made the decision to strip Atlanta of the All-Star game. The decision came after Republican-backed reform legislation was signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp (R). The new voting law came after Joe Biden narrowly won the state in the 2020 Presidential election. The Trump campaign made the election in Georgia one of its main arguments of voter fraud.

“Over the last week, we have engaged in thoughtful conversations with Clubs, former and current players, the Players Association, and the Players Alliance, among others, to listen to their views,” Manfred said in last week’s statement on his decision to strip Atlanta of the All-Star game. “Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions to the ballot box,” Manfred continued. “Fair access to voting continues to have our game’s unwavering support.”

Colorado last hosted the All-Star game in 1998.

Nearly every baseball star assembled Monday night at Progressive Field for the 2019 MLB All–Star game, where the American league again emerged victorious with a 1–run win. With another victory, the American League extended their winning streak to seven games, going 11 for 14 since 2003.

Astros outfielder Michael Brantley drove in the first run, scoring his teammate Alex Bregman with a double ricocheting off the left field wall. During the following innings both teams flashed their pitching talents such as Jacob DeGrom, Luis Castillo,  Jose Berrios, and Lucas Giolito as neither team added any runs until the fifth inning until Jorge Polanco brought home Gary Sanchez, adding another run to the American League effort.

The National league plated their first run the following inning, as Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon homered off Liam Henricks, bringing the game to a 2–1 score still favoring the American League. Xander Bogaerts and Joey Gallo responded during the seventh, as both brought in runs at the pate and stretched the lead out to three. Although home run derby champion Pete Alonso scored two runs with an eighth inning RBI single, both offenses quickly sputtered out after, and the American League won by a 4–3 score.

Yankees closer Aroldis Champman shut the door once trotting out to the hill in the ninth, striking out the side and granting the save. His teammate, Masahiro Tanaka, earned the win, as the pair became the first Yankee teammates to do so in an All–Star game. In a night seemingly made for Yankees pitchers, veteran hurler C.C. Sabathia also got his moment as he threw out the game’s first pitch while the city where he began his Hall of Fame career, Cleveland, cheered behind him. The crowd honored Sabathia as he trotted out to the mound during the game’s closing frames as well.

The Midsummer Classic now posters a 45–43–1 record, favoring the American league as they continue to ride this hot streak over the last decade and a half.

Houston Astros and American League All-Star Game starting pitcher Justin Verlander told reporters in Cleveland on Monday that the balls used in Major League Baseball this season are “a f—ing joke.”

Verlander also said that he believes MLB is, “100%” implementing juiced baseballs.

Verlander, 36, has given up more home runs than any other starting pitcher in baseball this season with 26. Verlander’s high-fastball that sits at the hitter’s eye level is often susceptible to being hit out of the ballpark, wether there are juiced baseballs or not.

Overall, hitters across baseball have combined to hit 3,691 home runs, and are on pace to hit a combined 6,668 home runs by the end of the regular season. The current record for home runs hit across baseball in a Major League season currently stands at 6,105, which became the new record two years ago in 2017.

SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2019- IN MEMORIAM SLIDESHOW

Since 2014, the number of home runs hit across baseball spiked by 60%. The commissioner of Major League Baseball, Rob Manfred, launched an investigation to determine whether or not the baseballs were causing the spike in home run production. The investigation concluded that while the balls were performing differently, that it was indeterminable whether it was causing a spike in power production by Major League batters. After the investigation concluded, MLB bought Rawlings, the current suppliers of the baseballs used in Major League games.

“It’s a f—ing joke,” said Verlander, an eight-time All-Star who is starting his second All-Star Game on Tuesday. “Major League Baseball’s turning this game into a joke. They own Rawlings, and you’ve got Manfred up here saying it might be the way they center the pill. They own the f—ing company. If any other $40 billion company bought out a $400 million company and the product changed dramatically, it’s not a guess as to what happened. We all know what happened. Manfred the first time he came in, what’d he say? He said we want more offense. All of a sudden he comes in, the balls are juiced? It’s no coincidence. We’re not idiots.”

Baseball took things along a new route this year when deciding which players deserved All–Star honors roughly halfway through this MLB season, as new system involving elimination stages offered a new approach for fans wishing to vote in their favorite players. Alongside the new system, new faces highlight the starting roster this year, which the league released earlier this week. Although many players poised to start the mid–summer classic this year raised some eyebrows after their surprise electoral victories, multiple familiar faces fill in nicely for both the AL and NL’s rosters.

With that said, the 2019 American League MLB All–Star starters are as follows.

C –Gary Sanchez, New York Yankees

1B – Carlos Santana, Cleveland Indians

2B – DJ LeMahieu, New York Yankees

SS – Jorge Polanco, Minnesota Twins

3B – Alex Bregman, Houston Astros

OF – Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels

OF – George Springer, Houston Astros

OF – Michael Brantley, Houston Astros

DH – Hunter Pence, Texas Rangers

Players such as Santana and Polanco likely felt the most joy once the news broke, as they achieve their first ever All–Star appearances. Pence’s selection surprised many throughout the league as most saw the 36–year old veteran’s advancement to the voting’s final round riding only on sympathy and respect for the aged star . On the contrary, Trout appears as the clear veteran amongst the group, as this marks his eighth All–Star appearance, adding to a resume far larger than his teammates. Brantley and Pence both follow behind Trout, however a with a large gap as the this year’s selection brings their All–Star game totals up to just four each.

The National League’s best fill out their roster with the following players.

C – Wilson Contreras, Chicago Cubs

1B – Freddie Freeman, Atlanta Braves

2B – Ketel Marte, Arizona Diamondbacks

SS – Javier Baez, Chicago Cubs

3B – Nolan Arenado, Colorado Rockies

OF – Christian Yelich, Milwaukee Brewers

OF – Cody Bellinger, Los Angeles Dodgers

OF – Ronald Acuna Jr., Atlanta Braves

Acuna Jr. brings youth to this national league squad, as he’s the youngest selected All–Star and making his first appearance. Marte joins Acuna Jr. as another new–comer to the big game, also as perhaps its biggest surprise as few predicted such excellence from him during this season’s early stages. Arenado tops off the list, as his selection this year marks his fifth, poising to serve as the Colorado’s only starting representative at the game.

With All–Star game reserves still unannounced, other players snubbed from the honor to play amongst the league’s best still possess a chance to participate at Cleveland’s Progressive Field once the All–Star break rolls around. The All–Star game itself, as well as other events such as the Home Run Derby and Celebrity Softball Game begin Sunday, July 7.

Although it remains roughly a month away, the large interval separating today and the MLB All–Star Game hasn’t stopped fans from casting votes, hoping to promote their favorite player’s claim to participate at this year’s mid–summer classic.

As the news illustrating the current leaders during this year’s All–Star voting surfaces, the players listed as potential All–Stars will likely shuffle about, as the reports aim to only promote further voting as the deadline nears. However, this update forecasts the current players riding along the right track as they near a potential trip to Cleveland.

With that said, the current American League leaders are as follows:

C–Gary Sanchez (NYY), 1B– Luke Voit (NYY), 2B– Tommy LaStella (LAA), SS–Jorge Polanco (MIN), 3B– Alex Bregman (HOU), DH– J.D. Martinez (BOS), OF– Mike Trout (LAA), George Springer (HOU), and Austin Meadows (TB).

The National League position holders currently include:

C– Wilson Contreras (CHC), 1B– Josh Bell (PIT), 2B– Ozzie Albies (ATL), SS– Javier Baez (CHC), 3B– Nolan Arenado (COL), OF– Cody Bellinger (LAD), Christian Yelich (MIL) ,and Ronald Acuna (ATL).

Bellinger highlights the National League squad, totaling up a league–high 1,189,380 votes. Meanwhile Trout’s 737,107 mark adds up to declare him the American League’s most voted player. Newly-acquired Phillies slugger Bryce Harper positioned outside the All–Star scoreboard brings forth perhaps the ordeal’s biggest surprise, as although his numbers warrant no All–Star consideration, his popularity amongst the fans designate him as an expected All–Star candidate. Harper, along with others currently treading water on the outside looking in, need not worry. However, the All–Star Game’s new voting format allows more players to sneak into the affair than ever before, as it now consists of multiple phases where the field simply narrows as the voting proceeds.

SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2019 – IN MEMORIAM SLIDESHOW

Perhaps longing to hold onto his position more deeply than all else stands Bell, as his potential All–Star start would be the first by a Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman since 1956. While Bell maintains a slim lead ahead Anthony Rizzo, other players such as Voit, Meadows, and Polanco cling to marginal advantages as well. Simultaneously, players such as Joc PedersonJose Altuve and Gio Urshela closely nip at the heals of those currently winning their position’s race.

With the MLB All–Star ballot accessible, fans still possess the capability to inflict their will upon the game’s starting roster. The initial voting phase is set to end at 4 p.m. EST on June 21. The All–Star Game itself begins July 9.

Robinson Cano homers in All-Star Game 2017

Robinson Cano homered lead off the tenth inning and propel the American League to a 2-1 victory over the National League in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game in Miami.

Robinson Cano MLB All-Star Game 2017

The Seattle Mariners second baseman smacked a 395-foot blast to right field to record the fourth extra-inning home run in All-Star history, and the first in 50 years. Cano took home MVP honors and a Corvette for his accomplishment.

“You come here and as a kid you watch (Ken) Griffey (Jr.) and all those guys that come to the All-Star Game, winning MVP. You want to get that feeling,” Cano said. “I already got it once for the Home Run Derby. I want to have this feeling.”

Griffey and Ichiro Suzuki are the only two other Mariners to win MVP (in 1992 and 2007, respectively).

The AL and NL combined for 23 strikeouts and were tied 1-1 after nine innings on Tuesday.

Cano, 34, was named to the AL All-Star team as an injury replacement for fellow Dominican Starlin Castro of the New York Yankees, Cano’s former team. Cano joined the Mariners in 2014 after eight seasons with the Yankees.

The MVP was the AL’s third choice at second base after Jose Altuve and Jonathan Schoop.

Schoop scored the AL’s first run of the game by firing a two-out double in the fifth. He scored on a blooper by Miguel Sano that fell just inside the right-field line and out of reach of Bryce Harper. St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina tied it for the NL with a solo homer to deep right-center field in the sixth.

Late Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez — who died in a boating accident in September 2016, was also honored at Marlins Park on Tuesday night. Several of the deceased players’ teammates said kinds words about him before the game, and even opponents like the Washington Nationals’ Harper wore special cleats with Fernandez’s picture on them.

The outcome of this year’s All-Star Game did not determine home field advantage for the World Series, which is why both managers said prior to the contest that every player would have an opportunity to play on Tuesday.

Despite crazy weather, yesterday’s revamped Home Run Derby came and went in spectacular fashion. And this was mainly because of the Reds’ Todd Frazier, who became the hometown hero by dramatically winning the derby for the Cincinnati crowd.

Todd Frazier Wins Home Run Derby

The new format created some dramatic tension, as batters had four minutes to hit as many home runs as possible — the time was shortened due to the inclement weather. On top of this, the batters also earned an extra 30 seconds if they hit a homer over 425 feet. And best of all, last year’s head-to-head setting returned and was enhanced by each batter’s limited time.

Needless to say, the new format worked, as fans were on their edge of their seat to see who would be the new champion. And Frazier did not disappoint, as he made his hometown crowd sweat through the proceedings: he waited until his last swing three separate times.

But by far his most exciting effort was during the championship round. When the Dodgers’ Joc Pederson — he defeated Manny Machado and Albert Pujols to get to the finals — cranked 14 home runs, Reds fans did not know if Frazier could top it.

Yet Frazier was not feeling any pressure, as the crowd pushed him to victory: “Just hearing the crowd roar, call my name, adrenaline. And those last minutes of each round really picked me up to drive the ball out of the park a lot more.”

And despite starting slow, Frazier was able to tie Pederson with just ten seconds left. However, he was not able to defeat the Dodger during his initial at bat, but he did receive extra seconds for hitting shots over 425 feet. And he did not need a lot of time, as he crushed the derby-winning home run on his first swing.

Todd Frazier became the first Home Run Derby champion to win on his home field since the Chicago Cubs’ Ryne Sandberg did it at Wrigley Field in 1990. Frazier finishes tied for second with Pederson for the most home runs in a single derby with 39: they sit behind Bobby Abreu, who in 2005 hit 41.

Tonight continues one of summer’s biggest traditions– MLB All-Star Weekend– with the annual Home Run Derby. This year the competition has taken on some new wrinkles. Just like the game of baseball itself, Major League Baseball has aimed to speed up the Home Run Derby after losing viewers in the past couple of years. As a result, while the dingers will still be flying, it’s a whole new outlook on the event.

Instead of having all eight batters go round by round together, the Home Run Derby will now be an elimination bracket. The participants are seeded and will face off to determine who advances to the next round. The lineup will be as follows:

1. Albert Pujois vs. 8. Kris Bryant
2. Todd Frazier vs. 7. Prince Fielder
3. Josh Donaldson vs. 6. Anthony Rizzo
4. Joc Pederson vs. 5. Manny Machado

The winner of each matchup will then take part in the semifinals and then the finals. But the bracket isn’t the only big change to the format.

Time is now the priority for the event. In past Home Run Derbies, the participants often took pitch after pitch to keep themselves in a groove to maximize the number of homers they hit. Now there’s a five minute timer where each hitter tries to hit as many home runs as possible. There are ways to extend the time allotted. Hitting a home run in the final minute stops the clock, while two homers reaching more than 420 feet and a home run surpassing the 475 foot mark each give out bonus time, which is capped at an extra 1:30. Batters will also be able to use one time out per round.

Of course, the ballpark also plays one of the biggest roles in the Home Run Derby. Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati gets to play host to the All-Star Game this year. Its dimensions will cause hitters to adjust their strategies. The left field flag pole is the shallowest part of the field, topping at 328 feet, while right field comes in at 325 feet. Left field is generally deeper than right field at Great American Ballpark, while center field is at 404 feet. The scoreboard in left field also makes the height of the walls a little bit higher than the one in right. That being said, right field is much more open with the Ohio River flowing beyond the stands, making hits more prone to the wind.

The essence of the Home Run Derby remains the same as the game’s biggest hitters aim to hit as many longballs as possible. But with a new format, the competition that’s lost its luster can gain some new fans tonight. The Home Run Derby will take place tonight at 8 pm EST. The MLB All-Star Game will be played tomorrow at the same time.

Everyone knows uSports’ feelings on the MLB All-Star game. While both basketball and hockey’s versions are entertaining — football’s Pro Bowl is a joke — baseball’s All-Star game holds weight because it matters. As previously mentioned, the winner gets home field advantage in the World Series, which is a big deal when considering the importance of a home crowd.

And with the festivities beginning in less than a week and the game exactly seven days away, the All-Star starters have been officially announced via MLB.

And if you did not get a chance to vote, there is still an opportunity to select one last American League player to the All-Star game: it is between Xander Bogaerts, Yoenis Cespedes, Brian Dozier, Brett Gardner and Mike Moustakas.
