The Miami Marlins finished 2025 79-83, a 17-game improvement from their 62-100 record in 2024. Miami had hopes for a playoff berth after going on a seven-game winning streak in mid-September. However, their slim hopes faded after losing to the Phillies on September 25.

2025 also marked Clayton McCullough’s first season as manager. Former manager Skip Schumaker opted to leave after 2024 due to concerns about the organization’s hierarchy.

Outfielder Jesus Sanchez was sent to the Astros at the trade deadline for pitcher Ryan Gusto and minor leaguers Chase Jaworsky and Esmil Valencia. The Marlins also drafted Oregon State shortstop Aiva Arquette seventh overall. Arquette was deemed one of the best bats in the draft after posting a .354 batting average with 19 home runs and 66 RBIs in 2025. Clemson’s Cam Cannarella and Arizona State’s Brandon Compton were both selected to bolster outfield depth. Cannarella earned ACC freshman of the year in 2023 – the ex-Clemson Tiger is also known for his defensive abilities and offensive mindset.

In 2025, the Marlins’ offense posted a .250 batting average, placing them 11th in the majors. They also placed sixth in hits with 1,388 and 27th in home runs with 154. Miami’s pitching posted a 4.60 ERA, placing them 25th. All of the team’s pitchers combined for 1,294 strikeouts while they surrendered a total of 1,376 hits.

Xavier Edwards led the offense with a .283 batting average and 159 hits, while Kyle Stowers led with 25 home runs. Catcher Agustín Ramírez hit 33 doubles, the most on the team. Despite having a 5.36 ERA and giving up 165 hits, Sandy Alcántara struck out 142 batters in 174.2 innings. Edward Cabrera led the team in strikeouts with 150.

Some coaching shakeups took place this offseasonBlake Butler was named the infield coach, Corbin Day and Chris Hess filled the assistant hitting coach vacancies, and Rob Marcello took over the assistant pitching coach position. Infielder Christopher Morel and pitcher Pete Fairbanks both signed one-year deals last December to play in Miami, while Eseury Ruiz was claimed from the Dodgers via trade. The Marlins traded Ryan Weathers to the Yankees in January for a prospect haul – pitchers Anthony Bender and Max Meyer resigned five days prior to the Weathers trade.

It’s tough to tell whether the Marlins will improve on last season’s record because the roster includes potential trade candidates. Alcántara is the most likely to be shipped off because he will be a free agent after 2026 and has struggled since his 2022 Cy Young season. FanGraphs projects the Marlins to finish with a 75-87 record in 2026, but they can easily exceed expectations if key players stay healthy and play at a high level.

The Miami Marlins are in third place in the NL East, and seven games back from a wild-card spot.

Miami finished the 2024 season with a 62-100 record, finishing last in the NL East.

The Marlins made minimal moves in the offseason as starting pitcher Cal Quantrill and first baseman Eric Wagaman were the only two big league signings.

Miami’s most significant need was a manager, as the former manager, Skip Schumaker and Miami’s front office mutually parted ways after the 2024 season. Miami hired Clayton McCullough, who was previously the first base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Marlins have been up and down throughout the season, led by Kyle Stowers and Xavier Edwards.

Miami is top 10 in batting average and avoiding striking out, but is in the bottom 10 for home runs. Miami is also in the bottom half of the league for on-base percentage, slugging percentage, RBIs and walks.

The pitching unit has struggled for Miami, led by starters Eury Perez and Edward Cabrera. Anthony Bender has also been a major contributor from the bullpen.

The Marlins are in the top 10 for preventing home runs and are in the top half of the league at avoiding walks. However, the Marlins rank in the bottom 10 for ERA and strikeouts, and in the bottom half of the league for batting average allowed, walks and hits per inning pitched (WHIP).

Miami is currently the youngest team in the MLB with an average age of 27.41. For the youngest team in baseball, Miami is putting together a solid season, despite being five games under .500, and seven games outside of a wild-card spot.

The Marlins have been in trade rumors surrounding Cabrera and 2022 Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara.

Alcantara has struggled to get back to his Cy Young form, and it didn’t help that he missed the 2024 season with Tommy John surgery.

This season, he has struggled, with an ERA of 6.66, and his WHIP is 1.43. While his numbers may be down, multiple teams are interested as contenders look to strengthen their pitching rotation.

While it’s unlikely that the Marlins make the postseason, the 2025 season has been a step in the right direction for Miami.

Miami Marlins second baseman Ronny Simon broke down in tears during the Marlins’ 8-6 loss to the San Diego Padres.

Simon committed three individual errors in the first four innings of the game. After being pulled from the game, Simon was crying while leaving the field. He was seen heading straight for the clubhouse, where teammates and coaches chased after him.

“It happens, it’s baseball,” Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. said. “Everybody who’s one a gold glove or a platinum glove has had one of those nights.”

The 25-year-old rookie had a good start to the game, recording a hit, an RBI and scoring a run in the first inning. The Marlins led 6-1 at the end of the first inning.

The Padres then tied the game in the second, third and fourth innings, partly due to Simon’s errors. He was pulled from the game following the fourth inning.

So far this season, Simon is batting .234 with five RBIs and 11 hits. He recorded an RBI in his first career game.

Former MLB All-Star shortstop Rafael Furcal is facing a felony charge for an altercation in a grocery store parking lot last month. Furcal turned himself in to Broward County jail in South Florida, and was released on $7,500 bail.

It’s not Furcal’s first run-in with the law: he was arrested in 2000 and 2004 for driving under the influence.

According to court documents, the instigating incident was a near-crash in a parking lot. Furcal nearly drove head-on into a truck, which swerved away to avoid an accident.

The truck driver dropped his coworker off at the grocery store, and then turned by Furcal’s car again. At that point, Furcal allegedly began to throw rocks and plastic bottles at the truck a situation that escalated when the driver emerged from the vehicle.

The truck driver claims that Furcal then threw a larger rock, “the size of a small palm,” causing him to bleed profusely, before departing the scene.

Furcal, 47, played for the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals. He won the World Series with the Cardinals in 2011 and finished his MLB career with the Miami Marlins in 2014.

Miami Marlins OF Dane Myers will miss six to eight weeks with a broken ankle after he smashed it kicking a clubhouse door following an ejection in Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.

With two on and two out in the top of the frame and trailing 10-6, the home plate umpire rung Myers up for strike three as the OF attempted to check his swing. Myers wanted an appeal to first, but the umpire did not ask for one, prompting an outburst. At first glance, it appeared he had broken the plane of the plate, and his wrists went around.

Quickly, Myers gave a piece of his mind as former NL manager of the year Skip Schumaker whisked him away from the field. Cameras missed the kick that prompted the injury, but Myers told reporters what caused his injury after Sunday’s finale.

Myers has been a bright spot during a disastrous Marlins season. In 40 games played and 83 at-bats, the righty has a .265 batting average, a .337 on-base percentage, and two home runs. The former Rice hitter, who is 28 years old, is in his second pro season in the majors.

The frustration from Myers may have come from the horrendous baseball stretch seen by his team before the All-Star break. The Marlins salvaged the series with a win on Sunday to avoid being swept for the second time in six days. Miami is 3-7 in its last ten and had been losers of five in a row before Sunday’s 3-2 victory. Schmaker’s team sits an astounding 29 games out of first place at the break with the second-worst record in the MLB. Only the Chicago White Sox are worse, but the Marlins are 30 games under .500 at 33-63. Most insiders believe the 2023 wild card team will be sellers at the trade deadline with possible targets, including CF Jazz Chisholm.

The Philadelphia Phillies won Game 2 of their Wild Card series Wednesday to sweep the Miami Marlins. The team will now advance to the NLDS, where they will face the highly touted Atlanta Braves in a rematch of last year’s NLDS.

There were few points throughout the Wild Card series where the Marlins appeared to be in control, as the Phillies dominated much of the action through the first game, a 4-1 victory, and romped in the second to move on.

After an opening game in which Philadelphia mostly relied on ace Zack Wheeler, who allowed just one run and struck out eight batters in 6.2 innings, the team was more productive at the plate in Game 2. With a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, second baseman Bryson Stott hit a grand slam to extend the Phillies’ lead well beyond reach. They went on to win the game 7-1.

Though the bats woke up in Game 2, the pitching was just as dominant, as starter Aaron Nola allowed just three hits in seven scoreless innings of work. The Marlins never seemed comfortable at the plate, scoring just two runs in the entire series. There’s a team on the Phillies’ horizon, however, that will likely prove more capable.

With 104 wins in the regular season and 307 combined home runs, tied for the all-time record, the Braves are the surefire favorite to win this year’s World Series. Power hitters like Matt Olson, Marcell Ozuna and Ronald Acuna Jr., the first player ever to hit 40 home runs and steal 70 bases, are sure to provide a different challenge for Philadelphia’s pitching. Atlanta has several arms of its own as well, as Spencer Strider could possibly be rejoined by injured starters Max Fried and Charlie Morton in time for the series.

When these two teams faced off last year, both were in a roughly similar position. The Braves were formidable World Series favorites while the Phillies were unlikely underdogs who had squeaked into the playoffs as the sixth seed. But in a massive upset, Philadelphia’s pitching outlasted that of Atlanta and the team took the NLDS in four games. The Phillies went all the way to the World Series before falling to the Houston Astros.

Though both teams are in similar positions, the main difference going into this 2023 matchup is that both contenders have improved since last season. The Braves have finally realized their true potential at the plate, improving on a 101-win season in 2022 and setting multiple team and individual records along the way. The Phillies, meanwhile, added star shortstop Trea Turner in the offseason while retaining most of its talented pitching core.

“I think (we match up) pretty well,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Wednesday. “They have a great club, don’t sell them short at all. But I think we do match up. I think our offense can go against anybody’s. Our two starters, Wheeler and Nola, they’re really pitching well right now. They’re on a roll, and hopefully, they stay on a roll.”

Michael Conforto leaves Mets game vs. Diamondbacks with dislocated shoulder

Michael Conforto is picking up some interest among a few ball clubs after sitting out the entire 2022 season.

A total of three teams are in on the 31-year-old outfielder, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

This includes the Miami Marlins, Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros.

While it’s unclear if there is a favorite to sign him, none of these teams have dramatically high payrolls.

The Astros have the highest at nearly $142 million.

Conforto is seeking a short-term deal with an opt-out, reports New York Mets beat writer Anthony DiComo.

In the shortened 2020 year, Conforto had arguably the best season of his career at the plate.

In 54 games, he hit .322/.412/.515 (batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage).

Then he followed that up the next year with a disappointing .232/.344/.384.

To make matters worse, he failed to sign with a team in free agency during 2022, as he was forced to miss all of 2022 after undergoing shoulder surgery.

But now his agent Scott Boras claims Conforto is “back to full health.”

Conforto will hope that whoever he wins up signing with that he will book a similar performance in 2020.

That could allow him to opt out next year and lead to him scoring a bigger long-term deal with the same or another ball club.

But in the meantime, his next contract could be worth two years at the north of $20 million, which could make sense for a budget team.

In terms of the best fit, the Astros are the top option if he’s looking to win a championship, which could help boost Conforto’s brand if he’s a major part of it.

But either the Cubs or Marlins would be the better alternatives if he’s looking to maximize his playing time.

We’ll see which team winds up pulling the trigger for Conforto but his next deal could be a bargain for a team if he returns to his 2020 form.

However, the Marlins do have a slew of young talent, including pitchers Pablo Lopez and Jesus Luzardo, with the hard-throwing latter dazzling in his first start—striking out 12 in five innings with just two hits and a run.

Through games completed through May 2, the Marlins are 12-10 and sit in second place, three games back, of the Mets. Jorge Soler and Jesus Sanchez have both smacked three homers each and totaled seven doubles and two triples combined in that span.

They’ll close out the first half with four against the Pirates and three against the Phillies—all at home. The Fish will open the second half with one game at home against Texas and then three in Pittsburgh before closing the season with three at home against the Braves.

Yankees retire Derek Jeter's No. 2 jersey

The Miami Marlins and CEO Derek Jeter have mutually agreed to part ways, effective immediately, the Hall of Famer announced Monday. The former Yankee legend was baseball’s first—and remains its only—black CEO. He had one year remaining on the five-year contract he signed in 2017.

Today I am announcing that the Miami Marlins and I are officially ending our relationship and I will no longer serve as CEO nor as a shareholder in the Club. We had a vision five years ago to turn the Marlins franchise around, and as CEO, I have been proud to put my name and reputation on the line to make our plan a reality. Through hard work, trust, and accountability, we transformed every aspect of the franchise, reshaping the workforce, and developing a long-term strategic plan for success.

That said, the vision for the future of the franchise is different than the one I signed up to lead. Now is the right time for me to step aside as a new season begins.

My family and I would like to thank our incredible staff, Marlins fans, Marlins players, and the greater Miami community for welcoming us with open arms and making us feel at home. The organization is stronger today than it was five years ago, and I am thankful and grateful to have been a part of this team.

Unsubstantiated rumors have swirled that an unwillingness to spend money—and thus compete—was the main reason for Jeter’s departure.

Jeter joined the Marlins as part of Bruce Sherman’s ownership group in 2017, when they purchased the team from Jeffrey Loria for $1.2 billion. Jeter held a 4% stake in the team and earned $5 million per year.

“The Miami Marlins and Derek Jeter announced today that they have agreed to officially end their relationship. The Marlins thank Derek for his many contributions and wish him luck in his future endeavors,” Sherman said. “We have a deep bench of talent that will oversee both business and baseball decisions while we work to identify a new CEO to lead our franchise. The ownership group is committed to keep investing in the future of the franchise—and we are determined to build a team that will return to the postseason and excite Marlins fans and the local community.”

“Derek is a winner on and off the field,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said. “In addition to his valuable contributions as a front office executive, Derek was a highly respected voice on our Diversity and Competition Committees. He helped build a talented front office with the Marlins, including moving the game forward by hiring women in top roles in the Club’s baseball operations and executive leadership, and a foundation that has positioned the Marlins for long-term success. Derek is a pillar of our game and we look forward to his future contributions to Baseball.”

The departure comes at a sensitive time in MLB history, as the ongoing owner-initiated lockout is the second longest in the sport’s history.

What a whirlwind of emotions the last 48 hours have been for the New York Mets.

In the bottom of the ninth, down 5-1, the Mets scored five runs to defeat the Miami Marlins, capped by a walk-off RBI single to left field by Michael Conforto that drove in Pete Alonso and Javy Báez. The Mets second baseman, who has been a subject of controversy since Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals, scored the winning run all the way from first after left fielder Jorge Alfaro mishandled the ball before attempting to nail Báez at home. The dramatic victory marks the completion of a game that started on April 11 before being suspended during the first inning.

The win is especially poignant given the context of what unfolded on Sunday. After launching a homer into the second deck in left field, Báez crossed home plate and proceeded to point both thumbs down while glancing at the crowd. When asked during a postgame interview about the gesture, he explained, “When we don’t get success, we’re going to get booed, so they’re going to get booed when we have success.”

“When I strikeout and I get booed, it doesn’t really get to me. But I want to let them know that when we have success, we’re going to do the same thing to let them know how it feels. If we win together, then we’ve got to lose together, and the fans are a big part of it. They’ve got to be better. I play for the fans, and I love the fans. If they’re going to do that, they’re just putting more pressure on the team, and that’s not what we want.”

To weather the storm, Mets president Sandy Alderson published a statement defending the team’s fanbase.

“Mets fans are understandably frustrated over the team’s recent performance. The players and the organization are equally frustrated, but fans at Citi Field have every right to express their own disappointment. Booing is every fan’s right.”

“The Mets will not tolerate any player gesture that is unprofessional in its meaning or is directed in a negative way toward our fans.”

The frustrations expressed by both fans and players are justified. The Mets came into this season with big expectations to win the NL East. And for the most part, everything was alright. The squad was in first place for well over a month and was nine games over .500 as recently as July 28.

However, matters began taking a turn for the worse when star ace Jacob DeGrom suffered forearm inflammation. The Mets ace had gotten off to a scorching start on his way to putting up one of the greatest pitching seasons of all time. In 15 starts this season, he has a microscopic 1.08 ERA and a 13.27 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Unfortunately, Degrom hasn’t pitched since July 7 and has faced a mounting number of setbacks to his recovery.

Disappointments haven’t stopped there. Francisco Lindor, who signed a whopping 10-year, $340 million contract extension with the Mets, has been a massive disappointment this season. He’s currently batting an abysmal .221 in 95 games played. To top it off, Lindor was the other player aside from Baez, who signaled a thumbs-down motion to the crowd.

Arising from this disappointment has been a renewed conversation about the relationship between players and fans in the sports realm. Professional sports make up a fascinating cultural product, as they transcend linguistic and cultural divisions in a world that is heavily fragmented and polarized. Perhaps one of the most unique components of sports is the concept of fandom, whereby one’s personal identity is merged with the team’s identity.

In Michael Serazio‘s book, The Power of Sports: Media and Spectacle in American Culture, he examines the nature of fandom, one defined by a tribal, communal, and emotional connection to the team. “When fans talk about their favorite team, language belies logic – that ‘we’ community of followers (united really only as consumers of a copyrighted cultural product) becomes one and the same, ‘inseparably intertwined,’ with the professionals at play.”

As such, there’s a fascinating dynamic at play in this relationship between the Mets and their fans. Fans believe they are entitled to see their favorite team perform well in exchange for their money and support. Athletes believe fans should be supportive through thick and thin.

As with all relationships, trust is a necessity. While this component was mutually strained for a hot second, Báez has proved he isn’t ready to give up on Queens’ passionate fanbase.

On Sunday, Aug. 8, a fan appeared to repeatedly shout a racial slur at Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson during his ninth-inning at-bat of a game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. The fan could be heard shouting during the television broadcast.

The Rockies then released a statement on Twitter about investigating the incident.

“The Colorado Rockies are disgusted at the racial slur by a fan directed at the Marlins’ Lewis Brinson during the ninth inning of today’s game,” the Rockies statement read. “Although the subject was not identified before the end of the game, the Rockies are still investigating the incident.”

“The Rockies have zero tolerance for any form of racism or discrimination, and any fan using the derogatory language of any kind will be ejected and banned from Coors Field.

Nobody on the field, including Brinson, reacted to the shouts.

The next day, the Rockies concluded their investigation and found that the fan did not yell a racial slur at all.

As part of their team investigation, the Rockies contacted the offending fan and another fan that sat next to the man. The team found that the fan did not shout a racial slur but rather shouted “Dinger.” The fan was trying to gain the attention of the team’s dinosaur-themed mascot named Dinger. Dinger was making his way through the stands behind home plate at the time of the alleged “slur.” At the same time, a fan was waving toward the mascot to somewhat correspond to the yells captured on the broadcast.

USA women’s basketball star Sue Bird and baseball infielder Eddy Alvarez will serve as flag bearers at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.

Team USA tweeted out the selection of Bird and Alvarez as this Olympics’ flag bearers.

“An honor unlike any other,” Team USA tweeted out. “Eddy Alvarez and Sue Bird have been selected as Team USA flag bearers for the #TokyoOlympics.”

Traditionally in the past, only one person served as the flag bearer in the Olympics. But this year it was changed to two after the International Olympic Committee encouraged one male and one female to represent the nation as a symbol of gender parity.

“With 49 percent female participation, Tokyo 2020 will be the first gender-equal Olympic Games ever,” the IOC said. “For the first time, there will be at least one female and one male athlete in each of the teams participating in the Games.”

Bird, 40, has won four gold medals with the women’s team since 2004. The Team USA basketball star will enter the Tokyo Olympics with the hopes of winning her fifth gold medal. Bird was honored to be selected as a flag bearer, especially with the selection coming from her peers. The flag bearers are chosen by their fellow athletes.

“I think that’s the best part, to be honest, to have your peers be the one to kind of see your career and pick you to be the one to lead us in,” Bird told the Today Show on Wednesday.

Alvarez, 31, has played with the Miami Marlins and won a silver medal in speedskating at the 2014 Winter Olympics. USA baseball looks to win its first gold medal since the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are having a historic season – historically bad, that is.

The franchise currently sits at a season record of 20-50, but 23 of those 50 losses have come on the road; the inability to win a game as the visitor this many consecutive times places them first with the longest losing streak of this type. They overtake the 1943 Athletics and 1963 Mets with the most consecutive road losses in MLB history.

The Diamondbacks are an abysmal 9-31 when playing away from home. Their losing streak dates back to May 4, which was a loss against the Miami Marlins. They have a six-game homestand for now before playing another away matchup that could snap their losing streak.

If they can turn around their losing ways on the road the next time they suit up as the visitors, their record might be quickly broken by the Baltimore Orioles, who have now lost 19 straight away from home.

The Miami Marlins’ newly revealed City Connect uniforms honor the Sugar Kings.

On Monday, the Marlins showed off their City Connect series uniform combination in partnership with Nike. These jerseys will be used on Friday when the team faces off against the New York Mets.

The uniforms pay homage to the Sugar Kings. The Kings were a Triple-A team in the International League that was owned by Bobby Maduro and played out of Havana, Cuba, from 1954 to 1960. Maduro had aspirations that the Kings would become part of the MLB and become the first MLB team to be based out of Cuba. The team’s dream of making it to the MLB inspired a popular motto of “Un Paso Mas Y Llegamos” (“One More Step And We Get There”). The team came close in 1959 when the Kings won the Junior World Series, but it ended when Fidel Castro rose to power in the Cuban revolution. Castro’s rise led to the team relocating to New Jersey before folding.

Miami has a large Cuban population, so the homage is very special to the Cubans who were there when the Kings played.

On Friday, the day after Cuban Independence Day, the Marlins will wear the jerseys. The team will wear them throughout the weekend, which features Cuban Heritage Night and on five other weekend series.

Nationals' Max Scherzer Gets 20 Strikeout for Record

On Sunday, Max Scherzer tossed a complete game in a Washington Nationals 3-1 victory over the Miami Marlins.

The win allowed the Nationals to retain their first place lead in the NL East division. It was the 12th career complete game for Scherzer, who is a seven-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young Award winner.

The starting pitcher allowed five hits and struck out nine batters in the whole game. The game only lasted 2 hours and 37 minutes. Following the game, Scherzer immediately rushed to be with his wife Erica for the birth of their third child on Sunday night.

“Typical of him to do something cool on an interesting day for him,” Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman said. “For him to go complete game and pitch the way he did today and then go over and have a baby with his wife, pretty cool day for him.”

“We’re happy for him,” Zimmerman said of Scherzer. “He never ceases to amaze, I guess, is the best way to put it.”

Max and Erica welcomed their third child, Derek Alexander Scherzer, at 5:38 pm, according to Erica Scherzer’s Instagram. It is the couple’s first son.

The couple met at the University of Missouri, where they were both pitchers. The couple married in 2013 and welcomed Brooklyn, their first daughter, on November 29, 2017. The couple welcomed their second daughter, Kacey Hart Scherzer, on July 4, 2019.

On Thursday, the New York Mets faced off against the Miami Marlins in what seemed to be a normal game, until a controversial finish.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, with one out and the bases loaded, the game was tied at two. Mets slugger Michael Conforto had the opportunity to win the game. All Conforto has to do was get a hit (or even a sacrifice fly) off Marlins’ acting closer Anthony Bass. A Mets victory was looming, but Conforto soon found himself in a 1-2 count. All Bass had to do was get another strike to get the second out.

Bass threw an 84 mph slider to the upper-left of the strike zone. Conforto began to swing at the pitch and it appeared that he struck out. However, the umpire called it a hit-by-pitch. The hit-by-pitch call allowed New York to secure a 3-2 win.

Everybody, including the SNY Mets broadcasters, thought that it was a strikeout and were baffled by the call. The broadcasters then realized that Conforto made no effort to move from the pitch and intentionally got hit to win the game.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly immediately charged out of the dugout to argue with the home plate umpire Ron Kulpa to review the play. The umpire crew decided to review the play, and after 58 seconds of review, the call still stood.

While the umpires were reviewing the play, the broadcasters were replaying the final pitch, and they agreed it was a strikeout. The slowed-down replay showed Conforto sticking his elbow out to get the win.

After the game, Conforto spoke to the media about the controversial finish. “A win’s a win,” he said. “It’s over, but I’d like to use the bat next time for sure,” the outfielder added.

Opening day of Major League Baseball is almost here. With that being said, it is time to take a look at each team’s prognosis heading into the 2021 season after the 2020 pandemic-shortened season.

> GET THE BEST MIAMI MARLINS TICKET DEALS HERE!

In 2020, the Marlins took advantage of the 60-game abbreviated season and made their way into the playoffs for the first time since 2003. They ranked in the bottom third of the league with a 4.86 ERA and weren’t much better on offense, ranking 25th in home runs with 60 dingers.

The Marlins only went to the postseason two other times in team history, and they won the World Series both times. While the Marlins should produce a .500 record, the team’s lack of offensive firepower will make it very hard to make the playoffs in a competitive National League East division.

Miami Marlins Projected Batting Order:

  1. SS Jon Berti
  2. OF Starling Marte
  3. 3B Brian Anderson
  4. 1B Jesus Aguilar
  5. OF Corey Dickerson
  6. OF Adam Duvall
  7. C Jorge Alfaro
  8. 2B Isan Diaz
  9. Pitcher

Miami Marlins Projected Pitching Staff:

  • SP1 Sixto Sanchez
  • SP2 Pablo Lopez
  • SP3 Elieser Hernandez
  • SP4 Trevor Rogers
  • SP5 Nick Neidert
  • CL Yimi Garcia

Miami Marlins Team Outlook:

Over the course of the offseason, Miami added four relievers to their bullpen. While none of them will make a huge difference, relievers Anthony Bass and Adam Cimber should be able to hold down the seventh and eighth innings. In February, the Marlins acquired John Curtiss from Tampa Bay. They also signed outfielder Adam Duvall.

Looking at Miami’s offense, their star player is Starling Marte. Yes, they have some decent bats, but the rest of the lineup will need to be revamped via Miami’s farm system. There is no denying that a large part of the team’s 2020 success can be attributed to starting pitching. Starter Sixto Sanchez will be an elite ace, and starter Pablo Lopez showed improvement and should flourish in 2021. Even Sandy Alcantra should produce solid numbers this season.

Looking onto 2021, it seems as if the Marlins will have some good stretches when their offense contributes. However, their overall lack of slugging will probably lead to the team missing the playoffs.

Marlin's manager Kim Ng

The Miami Marlins made history signing the first female general manager in MLB history, Kim Ng. The team announced the move on Friday on its Twitter along with her statements.

Ng brings a wealth of baseball experience to the team. For the past nine years, she was MLB’s senior vice president of baseball operations. She was the highest-ranking Asian-American female baseball executive. She has experience of being an assistant general manager with two teams, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees. She has playoff experiences with making the playoffs eight times and three World Series wins with the teams combined.

Ng first got her start as an intern for the Chicago White Sox before becoming their assistant director of baseball operations. She then briefly worked for the American League before making history as the youngest assistant manager in 1998, when she became the assistant manager for the New York Yankees at 29. She was the second female to do so. In 2001, she became both the assistant manager and the vice president for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2011 she became the senior vice president of baseball operations for the MLB.

During her time with the MLB, she worked with worldwide baseball leagues and clubs. She also introduced the policy for international player signings. She helped establish the first MLB registration system for international signings, negotiations and protocols.

Derek Jeter became the first black CEO of a baseball team after his group bought the Marlins in 2017. Jeter helped pave the way by hiring Caroline O’Connor as the team’s vice president. Jeter has been essential in rebuilding the Marlins as he hired general manager Don Mattingly, who led the team to the playoffs and won the NL Manager of The Year.

Jeter said of Ng, “Her leadership of our baseball operations team will play a major role on our path toward sustained success. Additionally, her extensive work in expanding youth baseball and softball initiatives will enhance our efforts to grow the game among our local youth as we continue to make a positive impact on the South Florida community.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said of Ng’s hiring, “Kim’s appointment makes history in all of professional sports and sets a significant example for the millions of women and girls who love baseball and softball. The hard work, leadership, and record of achievement throughout her long career in the National Pastime led to this outcome, and we wish Kim all the best as she begins her career with the Marlins.”

MIAMI, FL - MARCH 28: Jose Urena #62 of the Miami Marlins throws this first pitch in the first inning against the Colorado Rockies during Opening Day at Marlins Park on March 28, 2019 in Miami, Florida.

It was a fantastic night for Florida’s baseball teams as they swept the MLB Manager of Year awards. Don Mattingly of the Miami Marlins won the NL Manager of the Year, and Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays took the AL Manager of the Year.

Cash is regarded as one of the best young managers in the league. The Rays were able to finish with a league-best 40-20 record in the shortened season. Cash was able to lead the Rays to their second World Series appearance. The Rays faced the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2020 World Series.

Cash has been criticized for his infamous game six decision to pull pitching ace, Blake Snell, from the sixth inning. Heading into game six where the Rays needed to win to stay alive in the World Series. Snell was dominant in game six and was able to hold the Dodgers off as the Rays were up by one. Heading into the sixth inning leading by one, Cash made the decision to pull Snell from the inning. He opted to put Nick Anderson in the game. It was a decision that baffled both fans and critics alike. The Dodgers were able to rally against Anderson and win the game 3-1 as they clinched the World Series title.

“Have I reflected on it? There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t reflect on it,” Cash said. “Being in this position we owe it to ourselves and more importantly our players to continue to reflect on those decisions. Yes, I would do it the same way all over again. I would plead for a different outcome, that’s for sure.”

On the National League side, Mattingly took the award after leading the Marlins to their first playoff appearance since 2003. He led the club to a 31-29 record and making it his first winning season with the Marlins in five seasons. Mattingly became the fifth person to win both the MVP and Manager of the Year.

Mattingly had previously played for the New York Yankees as a first baseman from 1982-1995. He was their star captain and made six all-star appearances and won the 1985 AL MVP. He had previously managed the Dodgers where he recorded winning seasons for his tenure there. When asked about how he felt about winning the Manager of the Year and his AL MVP. “They’re just different. The first one feels personal and this one feels more like a team thing,” Mattingly said. “And that’s why I’m proud of it because we’ve struggled for a couple of years and for us to move forward is important, and I think this is a sign that we’re heading in that direction.”

Mattingly was able to keep the success in the playoffs with the Marlins. He led the team to eliminate their first-round opponents, the NL Central division champion, the Chicago Cubs. The Marlins were able to advance to the NLDS where they were swept by the Atlanta Braves.

Mattingly became the Marlins manager in 2016 after spending five successful seasons managing the Dodgers. It took Mattingly five seasons to lead the Marlins back to the playoffs.

Cash first joined the Rays back in 2015 and was able to lead them to the World Series. What made it even more impressive is that the Rays are ranked 28th in the league for payroll with only $29 million. The Rays relied on their pitchers for their impressive season. They were able to match a league record when 12 pitchers recorded at least one save.

MIAMI, FL - MARCH 28: Jose Urena #62 of the Miami Marlins throws this first pitch in the first inning against the Colorado Rockies during Opening Day at Marlins Park on March 28, 2019 in Miami, Florida.

The morning before the Miami Marlins were set to play their home opener against the Baltimore Orioles it was reported that eight Marlins players and two coaches tested positive for COVID-19, which makes a total of 14 with four other players testing positive before the season opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. Of the players affected the four that consented to have their names released were catcher Jorge Alfaro, pitcher Jose Urena and outfielders Garrett Cooper and Harold Ramirez.

This comes less than a week after the MLB began its condensed 60-game regular season which has players and teams still traveling from stadium to stadium unlike the NBA’s bubble restart, which was reportedly an idea that was presented but was shot down by the player’s union. What the league does in response is going to be a litmus test for how they intend to handle the rest of the season. The game has already been canceled, but it is unclear what other measures the league will take in terms of quarantining the players and staff and whether or not they will cancel other games in stadiums that the Marlins played at–the league has postponed the Yankees-Phillies game already which is the stadium that the Marlins just played at.

It seems that this was inevitable that there would be an outbreak among teams, but it is very discouraging for the league for it to come this early. If they were able to get deep enough into the season they could make excuses that they are in to deep to stop but after only a few games, there is a growing possibility that baseball may have to be canceled again if a truly major outbreak rips through the sport. Even if there is not a major outbreak, we could see more players deciding to opt-out of playing in the season and after this disturbing revelation who could blame them?

It felt a little suspect that the MLB was just going to restart in a way that was not much different from their usual business model and the unspoken anxiety that the other shoe would drop has know come to fruition with the clear cracks in their plan beginning to show. The “pray that everything works out” plan does not seem to be working, and it will be interesting to see where the MLB goes from here.
