The New England Patriots offense has been underwhelming this year and Mac Jones was visibly frustrated about it on the sidelines.

The former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback threw for just 195 yards (5.4 yards per attempt) and a touchdown in Thursday’s loss against the Buffalo Bills.

During the game, a video on the sideline showed Jones yelling, “Throw the f—ing ball. The f—ing quick game sucks.

And he ended it with more outburst: “F—!”

It’s unclear if the words were uttered at offensive coordinator Matt Patricia‘s direction – but he was clearly frustrated with some of the play calls.

While Jones addressed it in his post-game press conference and admitted he let his emotions get to him, he also said, “I felt like we needed chunk plays.”

“I shouted that out to get everyone going and that’s emotional, that’s football. I’m passionate about this game.”

And he added, “It wasn’t directed at anybody.”

But clearly, Jones wants more creatively to design plays that have a chance for more yards.

Averaging just over five yards per attempt won’t cut it.

And clearly, both Jones and Patricia will have to get on the same page and change something about the offense.

In two of the last three games (against the New York Jets and Bills), the Patriots have only managed to score one offensive touchdown.

On the season, the Patriots are among the bottom eight in the league in total offense.

Jones in his sophomore year in the NFL has thrown for nearly 2,000 yards along with seven interceptions and seven touchdowns.

But most importantly, the Patriots are now 6-6 on the season and almost certainly blew any chance at winning the AFC East.

And the schedule doesn’t get much easier going forward – making the playoffs a difficult task for the team.

The Patriots need to play the Bills once more, the Miami Dolphins along with the Cincinnati Bengals.

But clearly, the Patriots will need to adapt on offense.

Two of the Detroit Lions’ defensive leaders and best players, cornerback Darius Slay and defensive tackle Damon ‘Snacks’ Harrison, have decided to skip this week’s mandatory minicamp.

Neither Slay or Harrison has shown up for any workouts at the Lions’ practice facility this spring, and both players are looking to renegotiate their contracts with the team. By skipping offseason workouts, Slay and Harrison could end up being fined up to $88,650 by Detroit.

Harrison was acquired via trade from the New York Giants last season and has two years left on his current contract. Harrison is scheduled to make $6.75 million this season and $9 million next season on his current contract. Harrison was brought in by the Lions to help fix their atrocious run defense. With the addition of free agent Trey Flowers from the New England Patriots, the Lions boast a two-headed monster to anchor their run defense.

Since earning a starting cornerback role with the lions in 2014, Slay has made two Pro Bowl teams and was a first-team All-Pro in 2017. With the Lions recently cutting veteran Glover Quin from their roster, Slay has a lot of expectations to try and live up to this season for Detroit. Slay will be 30 years old at the end of his current contract, and Harrison will be 32.

When asked about the two rogue players, Lions coach Matt Patricia preferred to keep the conversation light. According to Patricia, players skipping minicamp is not “uncharted territory.” Patricia compared players skipping minicamp to adjusting for injuries throughout an NFL season. Beyond that, Patricia wanted to only speak about players who did show up for minicamps.

After being cut by the Miami DolphinsDanny Amendola found a new spot this week in Detroit with the Lions. Amendola spent four years in the New England Patriots organization with Lions head coach Matt Patricia. His new deal is for one year, $4.5 million but has incentives that could bring it up to $5.75 million in total.

WR Danny Amendola Joins Lions

After trading away Golden Tate to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Lions found a hole at the slot receiver position. They cycled through receivers. Bruce EllingtonTJ Jones and Brandon Powell all couldn’t fill the whole. In fact, only Powell is still on the roster.  While Amendola isn’t half the pass-catcher Tate is now, he’s a stopgap. According to ESPN, Amendola has 391 catches when lined up in the slot since his first full season in the NFL in 2009, the second-most in the league in that time behind only Wes Welker. However, the signing all but shoots down the possibility of a Tate return to Detroit.

Though Amendola is 33 years old, he’s still productive. Last season, he led the Dolphins in receiving with 575 yards on 59 catches. The numbers don’t jump out but he was having to catch passes from Ryan Tannehill, who was all but out the door at that point.

Despite the fact he was productive in Miami, the front office and coaching staff couldn’t seem to buy into Amendola as a long-term piece. With a rebuild coming and his price increasing, the two sides parted ways on Friday. The Dolphins saved $6 million by cutting the 33-year-old wideout, who signed a two-year, $12 million dollar deal last March. Despite that, the team loved the leadership and presence he had in the locker room.

The Detroit Lions‘ nightmare season opener may be linked to first-year Head Coach Matt Patricia‘s coaching methods during training camp.

Lions Players dislike Coach Matt Patricia’s Rules

The Lions were blown out Monday night after a 48-17 loss in their season opener against the New York Jets. As the Lions rally to take on the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday, concerns of fatigue and overregulation have poured out of the Lion’s locker room.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo revealed that some veteran players were upset with Patricia methods during training camp, claiming that they were being overworked and that there were too many team rules.

“When you don’t have the results, and when they’re as bad as they were [Sunday night], you leave yourself very little leeway as a head coach,” Garafolo said. “Your guys are going to say, ‘Wait a minute, we’re being run harder than other teams; we’ve got more rules than other teams, and we aren’t getting the results?”

The Lions’ performance matched the veteran’s claims. Detroit’s special teams missed two field goals and Matt Stafford threw four interceptions — just one shy of his career high. Also the defense was unable to stop Sam Darnold — the youngest quarterback to start a season opener since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger — from going 16-of-21 for 198 yards and two touchdowns.

In terms of points allowed, it was the worst head-coaching debut in modern franchise history as the 48 points surrendered under Patricia supplanted Bo McMillin’s 44-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in 1948. As far as point differential, the 31-point margin was the widest for the Lions since a 45-0 loss at Washington in the 1991 opener.

Questions regarding the intensity of the Lion’s training camp had surfaced during the preseason, though Patricia made it clear that his methods would create tougher, better-conditioned players for the regular season.

“No,” Patricia told MLive.com when asked during the preseason if players were fatigued. “It’s football. We’re out there trying to get better every day. And really, to be honest with you, the practices are critically important. That’s where we have to make improvements and get better. And we’re going to be able to do some things in practice that we can’t do in a game and look at some different areas.

Players noted that the drills were more physical than they were under previous head coach Jim Caldwell, which may or may not have had an adverse effect on the team’s overall performance. The pressure is on for the former New England defensive coordinator as he gears up to face former Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in San Francisco this week, and play host to the Pats in Week 3.
