Dimitri Payet: Blackburn Rovers v West Ham United - The Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round

Dimitri Payet has finally revealed what exactly made him want to part ways with West Ham.

The French midfielder, who will be 30 later this month, rejoined Marseille in a £25 million ($30 million) deal at the end of the January transfer window. This came after Payet demanded to leave West Ham less than one year after joining the Premier League club.

“The way we played, the defensive system we used, didn’t please me,” the winger told L’Equipe. “You could say I was bored. I had had contact with Marseille and most notably with [Marseille coach] Rudi Garcia, who had a philosophy that I knew well.

“The choice was quick. If I waited six months I would lose six months.

Payet continued: “With West Ham at home against Hull, we won 1-0 and they hit the post four times, In the changing room everyone was happy, but the the man of the match that day was the post.

“I thought that I would not have room for improvement. On the contrary, I risked regressing. I need another challenge.”

The Frenchman insists he has no problem with Croatian manager Slaven Bilic, although he admits he wasn’t surprised by the backlash from fans.

“That is normal. They hated me as much as they loved me. It is for that reason that the reactions were so violent. I cannot blame them,” he said.

“During a year and a half, they gave me a lot and I will never forget it. Was I scared? No. It was more complicated for my family. A lot of things were said, but there were no worries with my car, for example. Me, I continued to live normally.”

Payet also added: “The most important thing is that I am where I wanted to be. And the best is yet to come. I didn’t think about turning my back on the Premier League. Certain people spoke nastily but that remains their opinion.”

Before he left West Ham, several reports began stating the inability of his wife and three children to settle in England had been crucial to his desire to return to Marseille.

“That was another factor in the decision,” said Payet. “When I am happy on the pitch, it’s because everything is going well off it. When it’s complicated at family level that can stop you from being at ease in your job.”

West Ham is not prepared to sell the 29-year-old French forward, however. Payet has recently been linked to several moves.

It is understood the Hammers recently turned down a £19.1 million ($23.29 million) bid for Payet by his former team, French club Marseille.

“We have said we don’t want to sell our best players but Payet does not want to play for us,” Bilic said. “We are not going to sell him.”

The Frenchman joined West Ham from Marseille for £10.7 million ($13.05 million) in June 2015.

Payet excelled in his first season with the London club, scoring 12 goals and earning a nomination for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.

In February 2016 he signed a new contract that tied him to West Ham until the summer of 2021.

Payet has netted five goals thus far this season, and British publication The Sun reported last week that Bilic had ordered him to improve his attitude.

“I expect from him to come back and to show commitment and determination to the team like the team has shown to him,” Bilic said on Thursday. “We aren’t going to sell him. It’s not a money issue or anything. We want to keep our best players.

“I spoke to the chairman and this is not a money issue. We gave him a long contract because we want him to stay.”

Payet was kept on the bench for Friday’s 5-0 FA Cup loss to Manchester City.

“He’s probably been tapped up by some clubs or whatever,” added Bilic, who also confirmed that the player is not training with the first team. “That is usual at this time of year.

“But until he changes his attitude he is out of the team and he’s not going to train with us.”

West Ham’s last victory was a 4-1 win against Swansea City on Dec. 26. The team is 13th in the Premier League, and will next host Crystal Palace on Saturday.

UEFA Issues More Charges After Euro 2016 Violence Outbreaks

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has launched disciplinary cases against Hungary, Belgium and Portugal in the latest charges over fan violence at the Euro 2016 Cup, a soccer tournament that has been marred by international fan fights since its opening week.

The association announced the latest disciplinary proceedings on Sunday after another round of crowd violence during Saturday’s matches.

The Hungarian Football Federation now faces charges after its fans set off fireworks and threw objects before and during its game against Iceland at the Stade Velodrome in Marseilles on Saturday, a game which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Supporters also clashed with riot police and match stewards inside the stadium. A hearing has been setting for June 21.

Riots also broke out in Bordeaux when Belgian fans set off fireworks and hurled objects during the country’s 3-0 group E victory over the Republic of Ireland.

Portugal, meanwhile, also faces disciplinary action over a fan field invasion during their 0-0 tie with Austria in Paris.

UEFA has opened cases against the football associations of Belgium and Portugal, although no date has yet been set for a Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body meeting in either case.

The latest disciplinary proceedings follow UEFA’s confirmation of a case against the Croatian Football Federation after its fans threw at least 15 flares onto the pitch and began fighting towards the end of their national team’s 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic on Friday.

The game was stopped with four minutes left to play after both a steward and Croatian forward Ivan Perisic were nearly hit by firecrackers.

Supporters were also accused of “racist behavior” in the UEFA disciplinary announcement. The Croatia hearing will be heard Monday.

Finally, Turkey was also charged Saturday over its own fans setting off fireworks and hurling objects as well as storming the field during the team’s 3-0 loss to Spain in Nice, although no date has yet been set for the UEFA hearing in that case.

In total, 11 disciplinary cases have now been opened by UEFA over fan misconduct. Within days of the tournament’s start on June 10, 11 fans had already been arrested, charged and sentenced for participating in clashes ahead of games in Marseille.

Thus far, sanctions have only been issued against the Russian Football Union following crowd disturbances, use of fireworks and racist behavior during its matchup against England on June 11 in Marseille.

The Russian sports body was issued a €150,000 fine as well as “suspended disqualification.”

England and Russia Fans Clash in Marseille Euro 2016

Scores of English and Russian football fans soccer fans clashed in Marseille, France on Saturday in a third consecutive day of play at the Euro 2016 Championship.

Violence Erupts In Marseille After England And Russia Tie

Following a 1-1 draw between Russia and England at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille, fans from both teams began brawling, leading police in riot gear to fire tear gas in order to disperse crowds. Fighting began before the game, but escalated afterward, and some fans even began hurling bottles and other objects at policeman.

Russian fans also charged at the section where their British counterparts sat as the chaos unfolded. Smoke began filling the streets as some terrified fans fled.

At least 31 people were injured in the melee, four of them critically, said Mathieu Duroselle, a spokesman for Marseille police. The number included three officers who suffered slight injuries, he added.

At least 17 people were also arrested over the course of two days, local police stated Saturday.

After the French Interior Ministry classified the England vs Russia match as “at risk,” the French deployed extra security reinforcements.

“About 1,000 police officers were deployed to secure the game,” Duroselle said. “The situation seems calm now by the stadium and it seems like bars are closed.”

The Union of European Football Associations stated they will make an announcement Sunday regarding disciplinary proceedings. This could entail sanctions and even potentially disqualification for one of the two countries, or for both.

“People engaging in such violent acts have no place in football,” said the UEFA, the administrative body for association football in Europe.

French authorities also forced Britain to retain the passports of thousands of people considered hooligans and stop them from entering France during the tournament.

“There have been 3,000 entry denials by the Minister of Interior, based on lists of people who are banned from stadiums in different countries participating in the competition, or individuals likely to disrupt the order in national territory,” the Interior Ministry said.
Some bars also closed early in the Vieux-Port area of Marseille, where similar violence broke out Thursday and Friday nights among soccer fans.
