Honesty is the best policy. Lydia Ko has just demonstrated that.

Golf’s world No. 3 is being praised for her blunt response which left her interviewer speechless.

During Sunday at the Palos Verdes Championship, Ko was seen receiving treatment from her physical therapist for what looked like a tight back. After finishing tied for third, the New Zealander was asked about the treatment.

“It’s that time of the month,” she said. “I know the ladies watching are probably like: ‘Yeah, I got you.’ So, when that happens, my back gets really tight, and I’m all twisted. It’s not the first time that [physical therapist] Chris [Wicker] has seen me twisted, but it felt a lot better after he came. So, yeah, there you go.”

The reporter eventually managed to reply with, “Thanks.”

“I know you’re at a loss for words, [Golf Channel reporter] Jerry [Foltz, who asked the question]. Honesty it is,” she followed up.

Did it really leave the reporter speechless?

Others appreciated her honesty, too:

By the end of the weekend, and the completion of the ShopRite LPGA Classic in New Jersey, there will be a new number one woman golfer.

The current number one, Lydia Ko, will lose her spot at the top on Sunday, ending her 84-week reign, according to the LPGA. Ko is not participating in this weekend’s tournament.

Only one of the two contenders to take the number one spot is playing at the tournament. Ryu So-yeon, who currently ranks third, is competing in New Jersey, while Ariya Jutanugarn, who currently ranks second, is not.

Nonetheless, because of her number two ranking, Jutanugarn is the favorite to become to new top dog.

The only way So-yeon jumps from three to one is if she finishes first, second, ties for second with up to three others, or comes in outright third. Otherwise, Jutanugarn moves to first.

Regardless of who takes the spot, the golfer will become only the tenth person to hold the number one spot since the rankings began in 2006. Past leaders include Annika SorenstamLorena OchoaShin Ji-yaiAi MiyazatoCristie KerrYani TsengStacy LewisPark In-bee, and Ko.

Ko currently has the third most weeks at number one in the history of the rankings at 103. Ochoa hold the all-time record at 158 total weeks.

Canadian teenager Brooke Henderson claimed her first win in a major on Sunday, defeating world number one Lydia Ko of New-Zealand in a play-off at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in Sammamish, Washington.

Henderson, 18, sank two long putts in the final two holes to card a bogey-free six-under 65 to tie with the Korean-born Ko, who recorded a final-round 67.

The Canadian youngster, who is ranked No. 4 in the world, held her nerve to sink a three-foot putt at the first extra hole to win the £370,000 first prize.

Scotland’s Catriona Matthew was tied for 12th after a final round 72. Matthew, 46, had been merely three shots off the lead heading into the final round.

The 19-year-old Ko had led by one overnight at the Sahalee Country Club, where she sought to earn her third consecutive major championship. She was in front for the majority of the final round before Henderson passed her.

The Smith Falls, Ontario native said the victory felt like a dream.

“I don’t know whether I thought it would come true,” she said. “I’m just speechless. I don’t know what’s going on in my head right now.”

She also tweeted this message to her opponent following her win:

Henderson became the second-youngest winner in a major championship, and Ko the youngest last year in the Evian Championship last year. She is also the second Canadian woman to ever win a major championship, following Sandra Post‘s victory in the 1968 event, and is projected to jump from fourth to second in the world on Monday.

“To think about all of the incredible players that have come before me,” Henderson said. “I was reading some of the names on this trophy and it’s very, very cool.”

Ko said that despite the loss, she remained satisfied with her performance, and also took the time to praise Henderson.

“I’m happy with the way I played. I just got outplayed,” the New Zealander said. “For Brooke to shoot 65 on the final day at a major, at a course like this is very impressive.”

Ko was seeking to become the fifth player in tour history to win three straight majors.
