The Philadelphia Eagles recently released veteran linebacker Zach Brown and while the primary cause is thought to be performance-based, it certainly did not help that he made unflattering comments about his former teammate Kirk Cousins just before Cousins’ Vikings beat the Eagles 38-20.

On Friday, in advance of the showdown with his former teammate, Brown stated: “I think every defense is going to want that guy to throw the ball. For me, that’s probably the weakest part of their offense is him. Everything else is good. They’ve got a good running game, probably one of the best in the league. They have real good receivers. You just want them to pass the ball. You want Kirk Cousins to get it in his hands.”

Three days later, Brown was released by the Eagles. Cousins torched the Eagles secondary en route to four passing touchdowns in the win.

When asked after the game about the loss and the performance of the Vikings’ veteran quarterback, Brown replied, “I’m here to talk about the game. Not about that. Any other questions besides about Kirk Cousins? He did a good job. He played good. Hats off to him.”

Brown was formerly on a one-year deal with the Eagles, signed back in May, and had played a majority of snaps in their first six games of the season; he had recorded 29 tackles before his release.

Throughout his career, the 29-year-old Brown has played for the Tennessee Titans, Buffalo Bills, Washington Redskins as well as the Eagles. He currently has 661 career tackles. Multiple different teams have already shown interest in acquiring Brown, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

With the departure of the veteran linebacker, the Eagles will likely look to lean on their existing linebacker core, expanding the roles of Kamu Grugier-Hill and Nate Gerry. There is also a chance they will look to sign another linebacker in the near future.

The Eagles will travel to Dallas next week to take on the Cowboys, whom they currently share hold of the NFC East with. The Eagles defense will need to be firing on all cylinders in order to stifle the Cowboys’ high-powered offense.

The Cleveland Browns cut linebacker Mychal Kendricks on Wednesday after the seventh-year veteran was charged with insider trading by federal prosecutors.

Browns’ Mychal Kendricks Charged With Insider Trading

Kendricks, 27, reportedly earned almost $1.2 million in illicit profits on four investments totaling $80,000 he made in 2014. Insider trading refers to the practice of buying or selling a company’s securities (like stocks or bonds) after receiving access to nonpublic information about said firm.

The linebacker — who signed a one-year deal with the Browns in June — spent his first six seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, whom he helped lead to a Super Bowl victory in February. The Eagles released Kendricks in May, and allegedly knew that he was under investigation before they cut him.

Kendricks also appeared on HBO’s Hard Knocks this week, and made several pointed remarks in which he criticized a few of his former Eagles teammates.

Kendricks issued an apology in a statement read by U.S. Attorney William McSwain, who said the NFL star acknowledges “full responsibility for my actions” and that he “deeply regrets” what he did. All signs point to a guilty plea by Kendricks.

Television writer Damilare Sonoiki, a former Goldman Sachs analyst, was also reportedly charged for aiding the linebacker with his investments.

According to some NFL reporters, Kendricks could face a suspension or other punishment from the NFL for violating its personal conduct policy. He could also potentially serve up to a year in prison.

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster has officially returned to the team after domestic violence charges brought against him by ex-girlfriend Elissa Ennis were formally dropped by the court. After the ruling in favor of Foster was passed on Wednesday, 49ers general manager John Lynch issued a statement in which he said that Foster would return to the team.

Foster’s charges were dropped following a tearful admission by Ennis last week in which she claimed that she “lied a lot” in her allegations against Foster. A Wednesday ruling by California Superior Court Judge Nona Klippen indicated that there was not enough evidence to bring Foster up on those charges in order for them to warrant a full jury trial.

Foster was also facing felony charges regarding an assault weapon, but those have been dropped down to a misdemeanor for which he will face a pre-trial hearing on June 6. However, Foster’s marijuana charge stemming from a January arrest is still in effect, and he will in court for that hearing on June 20.

SLIDESHOW: SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2017

The linebacker’s return to the 49ers is huge for the team from a football standpoint. Throughout his rookie season, Foster showed signs of being a great defender in the making, recording 59 tackles and 13 assists in 10 games, all of which he started. His play was good enough to earn him a spot on the NFL All-Rookie Team in 2017, and at 23-years-old, he’s slated to become the core of the 49ers defense in the coming years. And it’s a good thing too, considering the vast improvement of division rival Los Angeles Rams during this offseason, as well as the potential for Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Josh Rosen to be a huge threat in the NFC West for the next decade.

Bengals Vontaze Burfict Draws Penalty After Contact with Ravens' Steve Smith

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict could be banned four games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse rule, unless he chooses to appeal, it was reported on Friday.

Vontaze Burfict PEDs suspension update

Burfict, 27, was reportedly on prescribed medication for the concussion he sustained on a hit from Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Ju-Ju Smith Schuster on Dec. 4. The linebacker also suffered a Grade 3 shoulder AC sprain during the Detroit Lions game on Dec. 24. Burfict is planning to use these two facts to appeal his suspension.

Burfict was also reportedly on prescribed medication for his shoulder injury. The disputed test occurred Dec. 27, after the linebacker was sidelined for the remainder of the 2017 campaign. He could argue that he could not be using any type of drug to gain an unfair advantage when he wasn’t even playing.

No appeal date has yet been set.

The linebacker has previously been suspended for on-field issues. He was banned for the first three contests of 2017 because of an illicit tackle of Kansas City Chiefs star Anthony Sherman during a preseason matchup.

Colts LB Edwin Jackson dies at 26

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson was killed Sunday morning by a suspected drunk driver, the team confirmed just hours before Super Bowl.  He was 26.

Edwin Jackson death news

According to several reports, the driver of the truck that killed both Jackson and 54-year-old ride-share driver Jeffrey Monroe is an illegal immigrant who does not own a driver’s license. The driver had reportedly been using the alias Alex Cabrera Gonsales, the police said in a release. Gonsales’ given name is Manuel Orrego-Savala, and he is a 37-year-old citizen of Guatemala.

Jackson and Monroe were stopped outside their Lincoln 2018 on the shoulder of Interstate 70 in Indiana around 4 am on Sunday when a Ford F-150 pickup truck rammed into the pair, killing them both.

Orrego-Savala is currently being held in the Marion County (Indiana) jail while the police work with U.S. federal immigration officials and the toxicology report results are released.

“We were heartbroken to hear the news of Edwin Jackson’s passing,” the Colts said in a statement. “Edwin was loved by all in the Colts organization. We admired his outgoing personality, competitive spirit and hard-working mentality. He was well-respected among all with whom he crossed paths, and he will be greatly missed in our locker room and throughout our entire organization.”

The statement continued: “We also understand that another person lost his life in the accident, only adding to our sorrow on this day. We are shocked and saddened by this tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of both men during this difficult time.”

Jackson signed to the Colts practice squad in December 2015, and was placed on injured reserve in September 2017.

Dozens of NFL stars, including former Colts punter Pat McAFee and team owner Jim Irsay paid tribute to the linebacker on social media.

The Oakland Raiders announced on Monday the signing of free-agent inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman.

NaVorro Bowman signing news

Bowman, a four-time All-Pro linebacker, was released by the San Francisco 49ers on Friday after seven seasons. Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said he would not rule out the 29-year-old — a former third-round pick out of Penn State — for Thursday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Oakland.

“Well, he’s a veteran guy,” Del Rio said Monday. “He’s played a lot of good ball over the years and we’re excited to have him. We’re a little green at the linebacker position, so to add somebody with the experience that he has, we think it’s a nice addition for us. We’ll get him up to speed and see how quickly we can get him there and on the field.”

Bowman himself said he was willing to play Thursday. “If I’m prepared enough, I’ll definitely try to give it a shot,” he said. “Hey, I’m going to show you something.”

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the linebacker signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Raiders.

Bowman will help fill the void at linebacker for Oakland, which has lost rookie fifth-round draft pick Marquel Lee to an ankle injury. The squad has been using two undrafted rookies in Nicholas Morrow, who played at Division III Greenville College last year, and Xavier Woodson-Luster, an Arkansas State product, in Lee’s place.

In seven seasons with the Niners, Bowman played in 89 games and compiled 808 tackles (487 solo), 12.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, four interceptions and 28 passes defensed. He has also played in eight playoff games, in which he has amassed 97 tackles (49), 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and three passes defensed.

The 49ers had agreed to trade the 6-foot, 242-pounder to the New Orleans Saints for a seventh-round draft pick before releasing him.

Bowman sustained a left knee injury in the 2013 NFC title game that kept him out of the entire subsequent season.

The Raiders (2-4) have lost four consecutive games and are in danger of falling out of a playoff race in October, as the Chiefs (5-1) have won their last five contests against Oakland.

Oakland also recently waived linebacker Tyrell Adams.

Colts Sign Ex-Texan John Simon to Three-Year Deal

Simon, 26, signed a $14 million, three-year contract with the Colts on Friday that includes $6 million guaranteed, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, citing a source informed of the deal.

The deal includes incentives that push its potential maximum value to $17 million.

Simon, who played three seasons with the Texans, compiled 51 tackles and 3.5 sacks for Houston last season. He started 12 games over the last two seasons at outside linebacker, and missed several games due to a chest injury in 2016.

In addition, the Colts added punter Jeff Locke to replace the recently-retired Pat McAfee. Locke was Minnesota’s punter for the past four seasons.

Indianapolis also announced on Friday the release of cornerback Patrick Robinson. Robinson played seven games in his only season in Indy. The veteran will enter free agency amidst one of the deepest secondary draft classes in recent memory.

Vikings LB Chad Greenway Announces Retirement

The Minnesota Vikings linebacker announced his retirement at a press conference at noon on Tuesday.

Greenway, 34, played his entire NFL career in Minnesota, ranking fourth in franchise history with 1,334 tackles, according to the team.

Over 156 total games, the defenseman compiled 18 regular-season sacks, 32 passes broken up and 11 interceptions.

Greenway had already stated in February 2016 that he wanted to play one more year with the Vikings. He stayed true to his word, signing with the team in late March.

During Tuesday’s press conference, Greenway thanked Iowa’s program, which returned the appreciation:

The 2006 first-round pick (No. 17) out of Iowa earned two Pro Bowl selections and was named Minnesota’s defensive MVP three times in his career. He was also named a second-team All-Pro in 2012.

Greenway also did good deeds off the field. He created the Lead The Way Foundation, which enhances education and health opportunities for children and families in need. In 2007, Greenway was named the Vikings’ Ed Block Courage Award recipient after returning from a season-ending knee injury suffered during his rookie season.

Ravens LB Zach Orr Retires at 24 Due to Neck Condition

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Zach Orr has improved significantly over his three years thus far in the NFL, where he’s gone from undrafted rookie to the team’s leading tackler.

Ravens LB Zach Orr, 24, Announces Retirement due to neck condition

A congenital spine and neck condition, however, forced him to announce his retirement on Friday.

A CAT scan after the season revealed the first cervical vertebrae at the top of the 24-year-old’s spine never fully formed. which puts him at a higher risk for fatality and paralysis, Orr stated.

“When I first found out the news, it was shocking,” Orr said. “I was sad, disappointed, upset, because football is something I’ve done my whole life, and something I love, and still love to this day.”

A first-time starter after entering training camp as a backup, Orr compiled 132 tackles this season, including two on special teams. Orr missed the season finale, though his single-season total was the team’s third-highest in the past 10 years, only behind Ray Lewis’ performance in 2010 (139 tackles) and 2009 (134).

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome stated the team had already discussed giving Orr a tender as a restricted free agent, which would likely have landed him more than $2.5 million in 2017, with a potential contract extension.

Newsome called Orr the most “inspirational” player he’s met in the past three years.

“I feel like my hands were kind of tied,” Orr said. “I won’t be able to pass a physical. If I could pass a physical, who knows? I would probably take that chance.”

Orr is not the only NFL player to abruptly retire at a young age in recent years. One notable example is San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland, who retired after a strong rookie season, citing concussion worries.

Orr sustained a neck injury during the Week 6 game at Pittsburgh and continued to feel pain in his neck. An MRI revealed a herniated disk.

The youngster didn’t learn the extent of his condition until his end-of-season examination.

“Everybody that broke down the situation to me were at a loss for words,” Orr said. “They were trying to figure out how I was playing football this long without anything major happening. I look at it as a blessing.”

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Orr is the 13th NFL player since the beginning of 2015 to retire at age 25 or younger.

Orr was selected by Baltimore as an undrafted rookie out of North Texas in 2014 and became one of the team’s top special-teams players by his second season.

“I’m very proud that he’s been a Raven,” coach John Harbaugh said.

Harbaugh, defensive coordinator Dean Pees and linebackers coach Don “Wink” Martindale continually lauded Orr’s intelligence, work ethic and commitment to the team.

Orr stated he is considering remaining in the game as a coach, and Harbaugh said the Ravens would be interested in bringing him on their staff.

“Walking away, I can be at peace with this because I don’t have any regrets, on the field or off the field,” Orr said. “I don’t have any of that in my body.”

Panthers LB Luke Kuechly: No Plans To Retire After Second Concussion

The Carolina Panthers All-Pro middle linebacker stated Wednesday he has no plans to retire from the NFL just yet.

Kuechly, 25, has missed seven games in the past two years with concussions, including the last four this season.

He added that although he appreciates the overwhelming concern of his family and his friends around the league, “I’m holding off that retirement word for probably a little ways down the road. … Whenever my opportunity comes back, I will be back out there.”

Kuechly’s teammate, quarterback Cam Newton, expressed some fear earlier this season after his concussion. The linebacker, however, defiantly stated he is not worried about the long-term effects of concussions, which have been linked to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in football players.

“I’m not worried about (CTE) and I think there is a lot to be learned from it,” Kuechly said.

Kuechly was cleared by independent physicians to play Monday night against the Washington Redskins, although head coach Ron Rivera erred on the side of caution and kept him out for at least one more week.

Rivera hasn’t decided if Kuechly will play against Atlanta on Saturday, or at all for the rest of this season.

“He wants to play, but I have told him that I have a lot of things to weigh,” Rivera said.

The Panthers (6-8) will likely miss the playoffs this year.

Kuechly has four years remaining on a six-year, $62 million contract he signed in 2015.

The team’s first-round pick out of Boston College in 2012, Kuechly was injured on Nov. 17 after a collision with New Orleans Saints running back Tim Hightower.

The linebacker hasn’t played since sustaining the concussion, although he continues to practice every day.

Kuechly, praised by defensive coordinator Sean McDermott for his high football IQ, has spent the last four games on the Carolina sidelines holding a clipboard and playing the role of assistant coach.

“The great thing that he has done best is he has stayed involved in everything that we do,” safety Kurt Coleman said. “He’s the ultimate teammate. Whether he’s playing or not playing, he’s so focused on the details and he’s helping everyone around him whether he’s on the field or not. He’s not letting the situation take away from the team.”

The New England Patriots pulled off one of the most surprising trades in franchise history Monday, sending Pro Bowl linebacker Jamie Collins to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a conditional third-round draft pick.

Collins, 27, is in the final year of his contract and is one of a handful of Patriots due large pay raises in the offseason as free agents.

Fellow linebacker Dont’a Hightower, defensive end Jabaal Sheard, and cornerbacks Malcolm Butler and Logan Ryan are also up after this season.

“In the end, we did what we felt was best for the football team,’’ said coach Bill Belichick during an afternoon appearance on WEEI radio. “There were a lot of things to take into consideration. I’m sure we could bring up a lot of points to talk about, but in the end, that’s really the bottom line.

Asked specifically if Collins’s contract status was the reason for the move, Belichick said, “I think you could bring up a lot of things and they all probably play into the conversation.’’

Several of Collins’ former teammates are still shocked by his departure.

“Jamie is a huge piece of our defense, arguably our best defensive player,” Pro Bowl safety Devin McCourty said in an interview with CSN New England. “So there’s gonna be a lot of changes that come from this move and I think as players that has to be our focus — how do we fix things and get things going in a positive direction.”

New England had offered Collins over $10 million annually, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday, although the imminent free agent sets his own value among the highest-paid linebackers in the league.

Former Patriots executive Michael Lombardi tweeted Monday that Collins was guilty of freelancing too much on defense, in other words frequently straying from the coaches’ script during games.

Lombardi suggests the Collins trade was Belichick’s wake-up call, sending a message to the locker room that the defense isn’t playing well enough against a string of mediocre quarterbacks.

Belichick added that neither the emergence off rookie Elandon Roberts nor the acquisitions of Barkevious Mingo and Kyle Van Noy affected the Collins trade decision.

The coach also addressed reports that the staff is growing frustrated with the Patriots defense.

“Look, we’re 7-1,’’ he said. “There’s always things we could do better. Believe me, I’ve been a lot more frustrated than what our record is right now.’’

Tuesday is the trading deadline, and Belichick didn’t close the door on the possibility of another move.

The Patriots defeated the Bills 41-25 in Buffalo on Sunday, and will next host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Nov. 13.

The Falcons have agreed to terms with linebacker A.J. Hawk, according to Hawk’s agent.

The team is in dire need of help at linebacker after losing Sean Weatherspoon for the season to a torn Achilles. Three other linebackers — Paul Worrilow (groin) and rookies De’Vondre Campbell (ankle) and Deion Jones (calf; played Sunday) — are also all hurt. Worrilow and Campbell are not expected to play Sunday’s game against Denver.

Special teamer LaRoy Reynolds  previously listed as third-string on Atlanta’s depth chart — was called in after Weatherspoon left in Sunday’s victory over the Carolina Panthers. The Falcons’ defense is currently ranked 30th in the NFL.

Hawk, 32, last played in 2015 with the Cincinnati Bengals, appearing in 16 games (starting 11) and compiling 24 tackles with one sack. He worked out with the Miami Dolphins early in September, but left without a deal.

Before that, Hawk spent nine seasons with the Green Bay Packers, recording 921 tackles, 19 sacks, nine interceptions and three forced fumbles in 158 games as part of a squad that helped win Super Bowl XLV in 2010.

He was drafted by the Packers fifth overall in 2006.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed Hawk’s signing with the Falcons shortly after rumors began circulating:

Hawk’s agent, Mike McCartney, also made the congratulatory announcement on Twitter:

The Falcons (3-1) will visit the Broncos on Sunday.

In other NFL news, the Chicago Bears placed wide receiver Kevin White on injured reserve Wednesday afternoon after he suffered a fractured left fibula and a high ankle sprain.

The Denver Broncos outside linebacker suffered an ulna fracture near his elbow during his team’s 34-20 home victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Ware, 34, cradled his arm as he walked to the sideline just one minute into the third quarter and was taken to the locker room. The play, an 11-yard scramble by Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, was nullified by  a holding penalty on Indianapolis tight end Jack Doyle.

The veteran linebacker will undergo surgery to repair a broken bone in his right forearm, and will miss four to five weeks, Broncos coach Gary Kubiak told reporters.

Ware missed much of the team’s offseason program, all of training camp and did not play in any of the Broncos’ four preseason games because of back troubles. Denver made that move to try to get him to the regular season and planned to regulate his snap count during games to try to keep him healthy.

Ware had split a sack with fellow linebacker and Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller earlier in the game, thus putting himself in sole possession of ninth place in NFL history with 136.5 career sacks. He now has 19.5 quarterback takedowns in 28 regular-season games with the Broncos.

The Broncos will next travel to Cincinnati to play the Bengals on Sunday.

Other NFL injuries announced Monday include Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee. Coach Mike Zimmer told KFAN the news early Monday.

San Diego Chargers running back Danny Woodhead tore his ACL Sunday, the team announced. Woodhead is out for the season. Head coach Mike McCoy also said safety Jahleel Addae has a fractured left clavicle and had surgery Monday.

Meanwhile, New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo won’t start Thursday’s game against the Houston Texans due to a sprained AC joint, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. The Patriots hope Garoppolo will return by Week 4.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown is also out this week with a shoulder injury, and is week-to-week “from here on,” coach Hue Jackson told reporters. Rookie Cody Kessler is expected to start in place of McCown. Cleveland defensive end Carl Nassib, meanwhile, suffered a broken hand in the loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Nassib is expected to have surgery. Offensive lineman Cameron Erving (pulmonary contusion), meanwhile, was released from the hospital on Monday morning, the team announced. He’s considered week-to-week.

New Orleans Saints corner P.J. Williams suffered a concussion after taking a knee to the head. Rapoport reported that it is believed Williams escaped without a spine injury. Coach Sean Payton announced the corner “will be coming back (Monday) afternoon” and “all the news is positive.”
