MRI reports came back positive for Jimmy Garoppolo, who suffered a torn ACL. His season is over; the first full season of the Garoppolo era in San Francisco has come to an end after three weeks.

Jimmy Garoppolo Suffers Knee Injury

Crawling back from a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs, Garoppolo hastily rolled out to the left with a scramble towards the sideline. Avoiding defensive end Justin Houston, he gained 13 yards in the comeback attempt. As he became surrounded, he made the decision to cut back inside, awkwardly, instead of stepping out of bounds. He collapsed and began clutching his knee, prompting fear for what was a hopeful season.

Houston expressed grief for the young passer, although mentioning that it could have been avoided. “That was, I think, that was his fault,” Houston said. “I pray he’s not hurt and it’s nothing serious, but as a quarterback, you should step out of bounds. It’s only an inch. An inch [gained] wouldn’t have made a difference. You got the yardage you need, you step out of bounds. You’ve got to be smart, think about your team.”

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

With the game clock winding down, the sense of urgency was heightened on the red zone drive. Leading the team down the field, Garoppolo was efficient and productive before his injury; he was 20-of-30 for 251 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions with a passer rating of 114.7.

Going forward, the Niners have decided to start Quarterback C.J. Beathard. Although competent in his few starts last season, the allure of an energizing and visibly talented quarterback in Garoppolo is undeniable. He was responsible for the essence of a winning culture, revitalizing the storied franchise of the Niners for the few short games at the end of the 2017 season. He was the bridge between an established past and a respectable present, a bridge that will have to wait at least another season to be crossed.

Reggie Bush may not have played in the NFL for more than a year, but he is set to receive a large sum for damages.

Rams Will Pay Reggie Bush $12.5M

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Los Angeles Rams were ordered by a jury on Tuesday to pay the 33-year-old former running back $12.5 million for a knee injury he sustained in St. Louis in 2015, back when the team still played in Missouri. The payments included $4.95 million in compensatory damages and $7.5 million in punitive damages.

While playing for the San Francisco 49ers, Bush hurt himself on Nov. 1, 2015 during a game against the Rams in St. Louis after he ran out of bounds on a punt return. He was sidelined for the rest of that season after tearing his meniscus.

“I’m very happy with the verdict,” Bush told the Post-Dispatch. “The people spoke and decided very fairly.”

According to ESPN, lawyers for the Rams stated they wish to file a motion for a new trial.

Bush had initially sued the St. Louis Rams, St. Louis Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority and the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission. However, a local judge dismissed the latter two, thus the Rams franchise was the only defendant.

The Rams have been playing in Los Angeles since 2016.

Bush officially retired from the NFL in December 2017 after 11 years in the league. He last played with the Buffalo Bills in October 2016. Bush currently serves as an analyst for the NFL Network.

In 2006, the year the New Orleans Saints drafted Bush as the second overall pick, the former USC running back’s family was accused of receiving gifts in violation of NCAA rules. Bush denied any wrongdoing, and an investigation was started.

Steph Curry is hoping to prove Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr wrong and return from his Grade 2 MCL sprain as quickly as possible, potentially by the opening round of the playoffs.

The two-time MVP sustained the injury in Friday’s victory over the Atlanta Hawks. That marked Curry’s first game back from a six-game absence due to an ankle sprain.

Kerr said there was no chance Curry could play in the opening round of the playoffs, and added the two-time MVP’s condition would be re-assessed in about three weeks.

Curry’s re-evaluation date is April 14th, three days after the season finale at Utah.

Curry, 30, added he will not travel with the team for the final five road games, and will rejoin them instead when postseason play begins.

In the third quarter of Friday’s game against Atlanta, teammate JaVale McGee elevated for a block attempt and ended up falling on Curry’s left leg. Curry immediately began hopping and then limping in pain.

Kerr added that he isn’t overly worried about the Warriors’ hopes for the playoffs, as the team has faced similar issues in the past. The Golden State coach specifically cited the time in 2017 when Kevin Durant sat out with an injury around the same time, near the end of the season.

Among the other Warriors to have recently been hit with injuries are Durant (ribs), Klay Thompson (hand) and Draymond Green (pelvic contusion).

Golden State next hosts the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday night.

Kristaps Porzingis sustained a brutal ACL tear in the first half of the New York Knicks‘ 103-89 home loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday, and has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Kristaps Porzingis injury update

The 22-year-old All-Star forward — whom Kevin Durant nicknamed “the unicorn” — became injured three minutes into the second quarter when he landed on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s foot after converting a dunk. Porzingis had to be helped off the court after he injured his left knee.

Although no timetable for Porzingis’s return was provided, the typical recovery time for this type of tear is about 12 months. Thus, he will likely be out for a good portion of the 2018-19 season.

Several Knicks players expressed their hope that Porzingis — around whom the team has built their offense since the departure of Carmelo Anthony to the Oklahoma City Thunder — could recover soon.

“More than a basketball player, he’s my brother,” said center Enes Kanter of the 7-foot-3 Latvian star. “I don’t want to see anyone going down like that hurting his knee. He’s about to be an All-Star. I’m just going to pray for him tonight. He is the most important part of our family.”

Knicks teammate Willy Hernangomez, Porzingis’ friend since their days in Spain’s professional league, voiced his support on Twitter:

Porzingis is averaging a team-leading 22.7 points and an NBA-high 2.4 blocks per game this season, as well as 6.7 rebounds. He previously missed two games due to a knee issue and two games because of an ankle injury this season.

The Knicks (23-32, 11th in Eastern Conference) will now likely need to readjust their strategy for the season and play more youngsters like Frank Ntilikina and Trey Burke in their final 27 games.

Porzingis isn’t the only Knick to have suffered an injury recently, however.

Tim Hardaway Jr. left Tuesday’s game after being kneed in the left shin, an area he had already experienced stress in earlier this season. Hardaway’s status for Thursday’s game at Toronto remains unclear, although X-Rays came back negative.

Here are more players around the NBA who wished Porzingis a speedy recovery:

This summer will be the first time Porzingis will be eligible for an extension that is worth at least 25 percent of the Knicks’ salary cap.

The 20-year-old German-born American tore his left ACL in the first half of Monday’s 3-3 tie against Ecuador, the USMNT’s opening group game in the South Korea tournament. Zelalem walked off in the 34th minute.

“For Gedion, this was his second U-20 World Cup, so his experience was invaluable for us,” U.S. Coach Tab Ramos said in a statement. “His passing ability is second to none in this tournament, and we’ll miss that. He was running the team from his position.”

The midfielder is expected to undergo surgery and miss six months or more, according to the Washington Post.

Zelalem, who plays for Arsenal’s Under-20 squad, has been on loan to Dutch second division team VVV Venlo. The central midfielder came to the United States with his family from Germany in 2006, and became an American citizen in 2014. After playing one year of high school soccer in Bethesda, Maryland, Zelalem moved to London halfway through his sophomore year to join Arsenal’s youth club.

The U.S. U-20 men next play Senegal on Thursday. Senegal leads Group F after defeating Saudi Arabia 2-0.

The final of the U-20 World Cup will be held on June 11.

Arsenal, which is set to play Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday, has not yet commented on Zelalem’s injury.

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane will miss the final seven games of the season due to a knee injury, manager Jurgen Klopp said Friday.

Liverpool’s Sadio Mane Out For Season With Knee Injury

The Senegalese star, who will turn 25 on Monday, was carried off the turf at Anfield after he collided with Leighton Barnes in Liverpool’s 3-1 home victory over Everton on Saturday. Mane scored the opening goal of that game.

Klopp stated he was “pretty sure” Mane would require surgery on his knee, meaning it is pretty much impossible for him to play again this season.”

“That’s what I expected, actually, when I saw the video after the game,” Klopp said at a press conference on Wednesday. “I thought he was lucky in this situation that not more happened, but it will be pretty much impossible that he will play again this season.

“But then he’ll have a long break and be ready for next season, so that’s the only good news.”

Klopp added that Philippe Coutinho is questionable for Saturday’s trip to Stoke City due to an illness that led to his substitution against Bournemouth on Wednesday.

“Phil is still ill and was not at Melwood yesterday and he will not be here today,” Klopp said.

“He had a conversation with the doc and he feels much better, but it doesn’t look too good. We will have to see if we [can] bring him in tomorrow.

“We will give him all the time he needs, but it will be really close.”

Finally, the German manager added that midfielder Adam Lallana will be out for Saturday’s game at Stoke due to a thigh injury he suffered in March. Meanwhile, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who has been out since February, will also miss that match.

Mane, who signed a five-year,£34 million ($42 million) deal with the Premier League club last June after playing with Southampton for two years, has started only five of Liverpool’s league games this season.

The Reds are third in the Premier League standings with 60 points, and hope to qualify for the Champions League. Chelsea and Tottenham are in first and second place, respectively.

Mane has been one of Liverpool’s top players this season. He has scored 13 goals in 29 appearances since transferring from Southampton.

Warriors’ Kevin Durant Suffers Hyperextended Knee

The team later specified in an update that Durant suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain and a tibial bone bruise. The forward will be re-evaluated in four weeks, the Warriors said, adding he could return before the playoffs begin.

Durant, 28, is scheduled to undergo an MRI. His injury occurred when Warriors center  Zaza Pachulia fell backwards into Durant’s knee after being pushed by Wizards center Marcin Gortat. Durant initially attempted to play through the injury, but headed to the locker room just minutes later after the pain persisted.

“We’ll know more tomorrow,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said after the game. ” … I’m always concerned about any injury, because you never know how bad it’s gonna be. So we’ll just wait and see and keep our fingers crossed.”

To offer a comparison, USA Today Sports’ Jeff Zillgitt noted that Milwaukee Bucks forward Michael Beasley suffered a brutal hyperextended left knee on Monday, and his MRI revealed that he would be out at least three games before being re-evaluated.

Durant, who played in his eighth consecutive All-Star Game two weekends ago, is averaging 25.8 points (on a career-high 53.8% shooting), 8.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.7 blocks for the Warriors (50-10), who lead the Western Conference.

The Warriors have added Matt Barnes to the roster in the meantime. They next visit the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night.

The Washington Nationals’ pursuit of the team’s first World Series Championship was just delivered a major blow.

Nationals’ Wilson Ramos Out For Season With Torn ACL

Wilson Ramos will miss the rest of the season with a torn right ACL, manager Dusty Baker announced Tuesday.

The catcher injured himself during Monday’s 14-4 home loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ramos awkwardly landed on his right knee while attempting to catch an errant throw. Upon landing, he fell to the ground and began clutching his knee, and was eventually helped off the field by team trainers.

“There’s never an opportune time,” Baker said. “This was the most inopportune time for this to happen.”

The 29-year-old Venezuelan was having a very great season, batting .307 with 22 home runs and 80 RBI and had a .850 on-base plus slugging percentage over 131 games. Ramos suffered the same injury to the right knee in 2012. He is meeting with doctors to schedule a date for surgery.

Washington will now turn to Jose Lobaton and Pedro Severino as they close out the season and prepare for the playoffs.

“We’ll really miss his offense,” Baker said of Ramos. “I told him: ‘Hey man, you and Daniel Murphy, particularly you two guys carried us to this point. Now it’s up to some of the other guys to take us to the next level and then the next level after that.”

The Nationals currently hold the second-best record in the National League. Ramos is set to become a free agent after the season and could demand a big payday.

Washington has suffered several other injuries recently. Outfielder Bryce Harper is nursing an injured thumb, second baseman Murphy has a gluteral strain, and right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg has been out indefinitely with a right forearm strain.

Harper has denied reports that he’s injured, although that would explain why the reigning NL MVP has put up lackluster numbers this season.

The Nationals have now clinched the National League East, and are attempting to both stay healthy and maintain home field advantage for their NL Division Series matchup with the Dodgers.

Wilson Ramos Injures Knee In Nationals’ Ugly, 14-4 Loss To Diamondbacks

Nevertheless, Washington lost yet another player in Monday’s brutal 14-4 home loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos, left the game in the sixth inning with a right knee injury.

Ramos injured the knee after he jumped for a sailing relay throw home from first baseman Ryan Zimmerman and landed awkwardly on his right leg shortly after the game resumed following a 20-minute rain delay. Nationals trainer Paul Lessard tended to the 29-year-old catcher. He walked off slowly with assistance on each side, not putting any weight on his right leg.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker didn’t comment much on the injury, saying only that Ramos “doesn’t look too good tonight,” and adding that the catcher will undergo on Tuesday.

“I feel badly because you know how we all feel about Wilson,” Baker said. “But it’s part of the game. You hate [for] it to happen this late, right before the playoffs, but our next step is try to figure out a way to play without Wilson. I’ve been mixing and matching this year and most of my life. Therefore it’s another obstacle and I just got to try to go back to the drawing board and figure out something.”

Ramos was kidnapped in his native Venezuela in 2011 before injuries riddled his first five full years in the majors, and the catcher dedicated this season, perhaps his best yet, to his grandfather, who died in late April.

Ramos’ injury follows a long list of injuries on Washington’s roster: ace Stephen Strasburg (elbow), MVP candidate Daniel Murphy (buttocks) and reigning MVP Bryce Harper (thumb). Max Scherzer is the only one of the Nationals’ five all-stars not dealing with an injury.

Yasmany Tomas led scoring for the D-backs, driving in five runs on a three-run homer and a two-run double, as Arizona drove Washington right-hander Tanner Roark from the game after four innings.

Jean Segura drove a long solo homer over the right-center-field wall to tie the game at 1 in the top of the fourth, and went back-to-back with Jake Lamb in the eighth off righty Lucas Giolito as part of the D-backs’ five-homer night. Mitch Haniger also homered for Arizona.

“It’s always nice to put up runs like that,” Lamb said. “Every inning for the most part we had good ABs so it was nice.”

Roark was due to hit with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Baker chose to replace him with pinch-hitter Chris Heisey.

That decision initially backfired, as Arizona righty Archie Bradley struck out Heisey looking, but Brian Goodwin worked a walk after falling behind 0-2 to plate a run and Trea Turner followed with a two-run double– one of his three hits–to cut the D-backs’ lead to 5-4.

Washington’s lead over Los Angeles for home-field advantage in the NLDS fell to one game.

Bradley then walked Jayson Werth to load the bases, although Washington was unable to score again. Randall Delgado struck Anthony Rendon out to escape the jam and begin the D-backs bullpen’s four-man scoreless effort over the final 5 1/3 innings.

Yusmeiro Petit, who relieved Roark in the fifth inning, gave up five runs, four earned, over 1 1/3 innings and Giolito allowed four more, including back-to-back homers over the last two frames.

The two teams will next face off again for the second game of their four-game series at Nationals Park on Tuesday night. Arizona right-hander Matt Koch will make his first Major League start. Koch replaces Zack Greinke, who was been bothered by a stiff shoulder. Righty Max Scherzer (18-7, 2.82 ERA) will take the mound for the Nationals. Scherzer, who was selected in the first round by the D-backs in 2006, is 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA against his former team.

Adrian Peterson limped off the field at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in the third quarter of the Minnesota Vikings‘ 17-14 victory over the Green Bay Packers Sunday night after sustaining a right knee injury.

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson Has Knee Injury In 17-14 Win Over Packers

Although it’s not yet clear exactly how serious the Vikings running back’s injury is, Peterson will likely miss at least one week.

The 31-year-old’s leg was wrapped in a giant black knee brace, and when he walked out of the stadium Sunday, he was on crutches.

Peterson finished with 19 yards on 12 carries in quarterback Sam Bradford’s debut with Minnesota. Bradford completed 22 of 31 passes for 286 yards, two touchdowns and no turnovers, just 15 days after he arrived in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“He can throw the ball,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. “He’s got some toughness about him, and this isn’t his first rodeo.”

If Peterson’s injury turns out to be serious, Minnesota will likely turn to Matt Asiata or Jerick McKinnon to start at running back.

After Peterson went down, Asiata took most of the carries Sunday night. (six carries, 14 yards). Nevertheless, that probably won’t continue. The fifth-year back is as strong as a brick, which means he will likely be the Vikings’ go-to guy in goal-line and short-yardage situations.

Meanwhile, McKinnon– who was a rookie in 2014– carried the ball 113 times during Peterson’s absence. He only carried the ball twice against Green Bay.

Zimmer said Peterson is scheduled to have an MRI Monday morning and that the team isn’t expecting the injury to be overly serious.

Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs caught nine passes for 182 yards and a touchdown. Minnesota (2-0) held the Packers (1-1) to 65 total yards in the first half, withstanding an early touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers to Jordy Nelson on a drive aided by two penalties from cornerback Terence Newman.

“They didn’t win the division last year by accident. You do have to give them their credit,” said Mike Daniels, who had one of Green Bay’s four sacks.

Cornerback Trae Waynes, who had two penalties himself, intercepted Rodgers’ pass in Vikings territory with 1:30 remaining to secure the victory. The previous drive was cut short by a strip sack by Brian Robison, when Shamar Stephen recovered at the Minnesota 44 with 6:53 left.

Rodgers, who ran for 29 yards and a touchdown, finished 12 for 21 for 154 yards in the second half, although Bradford was the stronger quarterback of the evening.

Bradford found Diggs for a 4-yard completion on fourth-and-1 from the 18. He then hit Kyle Rudolph for an 8-yard touchdown pass three plays later.

“When quarterbacks and receivers are on time, they’re very tough to stop,” said Packers cornerback Damarious Randall, who was matched up with Diggs for most of the game.

Bradford was hit hard on his non-throwing had by Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews while following through on a pass.

The Vikings aggressively traded two premium draft picks including next year’s first-rounder to Philadelphia to fetch Bradford after quarterback Teddy Bridgewater went down with a huge left knee injury. Minnesota also boldly shunned a field goal attempt early in the second quarter.

Bradford praised his offense following the game.

“These guys have had my back from day one,” Bradford said.

The Vikings will next visit the Carolina Panthers on Sunday for Week 3, while the Packers will host the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Teddy Bridgewatera Minnesota Vikings quarterback, suffered a dislocated knee and torn ACL at practice on Tuesday, the team announced in a statement.

Teddy Bridgewater Releases Statement After Suffering Dislocated Knee, Torn ACL

“After undergoing an MRI, it was determined that Teddy suffered a complete tear to his ACL and other structural damage,” the statement read. “Fortunately, there appears to be no nerve or arterial damage. Surgical repair will be scheduled within the next few days.

“Although the recovery time will be significant, we expect Teddy to make a full recovery. I would like to thank all of the medical professionals and our athletic training staff for all of their help today. Teddy has already displayed the attitude needed to overcome this injury and attack his rehab.”

The injury announcement was made roughly two hours after Bridgewater went down with a non-contact injury that ended the session after just 30 minutes.

The quarterback himself also released a statement, in which he expressed his gratitude to the Vikings organization, as well as his determination to fight his injury and make a strong return. The statement, released early Thursday, read:

“I want to thank the Wilf Family and the entire Vikings organization, all of my teammates, friends, Eric Sugarman and the amazing Vikings athletic training staff and the fans who have sent me messages and wished me well. Your thoughts and prayers mean a lot to me and have helped me in this difficult time. There are great players and great leaders in our locker room who are going to fight to the end to reach the goals we set for 2016. I will be there mentally, physically and in spirit to support them accomplish those goals.”

Bridgewater continued: “In order to have a testimony, you have to have a test. I come from amazing DNA, I watched my mom fight and win against breast cancer. We will, as a team, attack my rehab with the same vigor and energy. My faith is strong, my faith is unwavering and my vision is clear. My purpose will not be denied.”

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer stated the 23-year-old QB had to be sedated before undergoing an MRI at the hospital.

When asked if there was a chance Bridgewater could play this season, Zimmer responded, “It doesn’t look good right now.”

“We’re not going to stick our heads in the sand, tuck our tail between our legs,” Zimmer said about the bind Bridgewater’s injury could put the team in. “We’re not going to make excuses.

“Everybody can count us out but I think that’d be the wrong thing to do.”

Per the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, Bridgewater was clutching his left knee at practice as teammates prayed around him.

Bridgewater was carried off the field in an ambulance to the hospital as his team feared the worst.

The QB only threw 14 touchdowns last season, although he led a run-first offense that helped Minnesota win the NFC North division and come within a missed field goal of defeating the Seahawks in the playoffs. Over his first two seasons, he passed for more yards than any quarterback in Vikings history over the same time frame. He also has the highest completion percentage (64.9) of any quarterback over his first two seasons in NFL history.

His 3,231 passing yards earned him a Pro Bowl bid and pushed the 2014 first-round pick into his third season.

This preseason, Bridgewater was 18 of 23 (78.3 percent) with 253, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Shaun Hill and Joel Stave are the team’s other quarterbacks.

Hill, 34, is 16-18 as a starter in his career.

“I have confidence in Shaun,” Zimmer said. “I think he’s played great this preseason. He’s been in two-minute drills. He’s done a phenomenal job.”

This offseason, the Vikings spent another first-round pick on a wide receiver — Laquon Treadwell — in the hopes that his playmaking ability could match Bridgewater’s potential as a franchise quarterback.

On Wednesday, the team officially placed Bridgewater on injured reserve and re-signed quarterback Brad Sorensen, who was recently waived by the team.

Green, 28, was removed from the game as a precaution. He was examined by an athletic trainer and then walked around the sideline, where he stood without his helmet.

Bengals officials stated the injury was not serious and added that if it had been a regular-season game, Green would have returned.

“I just came down on it, banged knees,” Green said at halftime on NBC. “I’m fine. This sucks, because I wanted to play a little bit longer. It’s not serious at all.”

Green’s injury was the second of the night for Cincinnati. Cornerback Adam Jones strained a calf while backpedaling during pre-game warmups and also limped off. He did not play.

Bengals running back and special-teams ace Cedric Peerman then exited the game in the second quarter after breaking his left forearm. He was fitted with an air cast by athletic trainers on the bench.

Green’s injury happened when he was attempting to make a cut near the sideline. The wideout was selected by the Bengals as the fourth overall pick out of Georgia in the 2011 NFL Draft. He has played in five consecutive Pro Bowls.

If Green were to miss any time, that would mean the Bengals would likely have to turn to rookie Tyler Boyd, injured veteran Brandon LaFell, and seldom-used return man Brandon Tate as their top wide receivers.

The Bengals will next host the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night for their final pre-season game before visiting the New York Jets on Sept. 11 for their regular-season opener.

The Jaguars next visit the Atlanta Falcons Thursday night before hosting the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 11 for their regular-season opener.

Jon Niese lasted only 21 pitches before an achy left knee forced him to the clubhouse in the first inning of the Mets’ road game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night, although New York ultimately came away with a 7-4 victory.

Mets’ Jon Niese Leaves First Inning Of 7-4 Win Over Cardinals With Knee Injury

The Mets starter appeared to be in pain from the very first at-bat of the game, and limped a few batters later. His pitches began looking worse. He ended up facing only four batters.

“After he walked the first guy, I said there’s something wrong here,” said Mets Manager Terry Collins, who knew Niese had been battling a knee injury for months. The lefty is now on the disabled list.

The Mets now have their first three-game winning streak since the first week of July.

Wilmer Flores opened scoring with a three-run homer to left field off Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia in the top of the first. Garcia, who opened his night with a leadoff walk, struggle for the rest of Tuesday’s game. Two-out RBI hits from Jose Reyes and Asdrubal Cabrera broke a tie in the second, and Justin Ruggiano smacked a fastball for a home run in the fourth, Garcia’s final inning. Reyes, Cabrera, Yoenis Cespedes and Flores, the Mets’ 1-4 hitters, combined for nine hits, five runs scored and five RBIs.

“Today was just an overall struggle,” said Garcia, who tied his season high with six runs allowed. “I wasn’t able to keep the ball down. I wasn’t able to get ahead in the count. It was one of those days where I was battling down there and didn’t have a good feeling.”

Collins, meanwhile, used every Mets reliever except Hansel Robles to win Tuesday’s game. Rookie Robert Gsellman, who was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas, helped lead the New York bullpen.

“That was my first time ever coming out of the bullpen, so it felt kind of awkward,” Gsellman said. “But I took the mound the same way I started. I just thought I was starting the game again.”

The Mets intended to use Gsellman, a starter in the minor leagues, as a long reliever, possibly, behind Niese or Seth Lugo, who is scheduled to start on Thursday for the injured Steven Matz. The team warned Gsellman about Niese’s knee and a few batters into Tuesday’s game, he began warming up.

“That’s a tough spot, even for a veteran, to come out in the first inning and guys on,” Collins said of Gsellman. “Very, very impressive.”

Niese said he had been dealing with the injury since June, had had it drained, and had received cortisone shots.

“I think I lead the league in MRIs on this thing,” said Niese regarding his knee.

Ruggiano’s fourth-inning solo shot traveled a projected 461 feet, the longest by a Met in the Statcast era.

Yadier Molina gave Gsellman no time to settle in, as the Cardinals catcher jumped on the first pitch of Gsellman’s major league career and smacked it to deep center for an RBI double. The hit helped St. Louis answer the Mets’ three-run first with their own three-run frame. Molina, who leads all MLB catchers with 28 doubles this season, recorded his third and seventh-inning singles on the first pitches of those at-bats, too.

With his sixth-inning solo shot, Randal Grichuk bumped the Cardinals’ home run streak to 12 straight games. That’s five short of the team’s season high set back in July. . As far as personal streaks go, reliever Alex Reyes, who threw 2 1/3 innings, remains un-scored upon since making his Major League debut.

“I feel like I’ve been throwing the ball well, just commanding the ball and keeping the ball down and executing the pitches that I have to,” Reyes said.

The two teams will face off for the second game of their three-game series at Busch Stadium on Wednesday night. Right-hander Jacob deGrom will take the mound for the Mets (63-62, 3rd in NL East).

Cardinals (66-58, 2nd in NL Central) righty Carlos Martinez will start against the Mets for the fourth time of his career.

The nature of the procedure isn’t specifically known, but it doesn’t involve the ACL or any other ligaments.

Depending on when he has the second surgery, it should be approximately 8-10 weeks before he can begin training, which means he will start the upcoming season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported the news on Twitter:

Rapoport also stated that tackle Sebastian Vollmer has been on the PUP list with a hip injury and is likely to stay there throughout the season. Guard Shaq Mason has also broken his hand.

Lewis, who will be 26 next month, tore his left ACL during a game against the Washington Redskins last November. He appeared at one OTA practice in the spring but was on the PUP list in camp and hadn’t practiced.

Lewis was having a terrific season prior to his injury, averaging 4.8 yards per carry, with 36 catches and four touchdowns. His capacity to operate in space helped bolster the Patriots’ offense.

He was drafted out of the University of Pittsburgh by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey Suffers Knee Injury

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey suffered a small meniscus tear in his right knee injury on Thursday.

Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey’s Knee Injury: Concern Or Not For Team?

The fifth overall draft pick will now miss time and his injury could require surgery, depending on what Dr. James Andrews determines when he examines Ramsey next week.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport stated the Jaguars are hoping to have a recovery timeline for Ramsey by Monday, and added that the team is optimistic the injury is not serious.

Many draft analysts considered Ramsey the best player in the entire 2016 draft. The 6-foot-1 corner boasts the size and speed to play anywhere in the secondary. Some considered him a safety with the size potential to be a hybrid player.

Ramsey was slotted to start at corner for Jacksonville, creating a solid trio with Davon House and free-agent pickup Prince Amukamara.

The Jaguars had gained momentum from free agency and from assembling a very strong draft class. Ramsey’s injury will undoubtedly put a dent in that.

Nevertheless, the team’s situation is still not as bleak as it was last year when first-round pick Dante Fowler Jr. tore his left ACL on the first day of rookie minicamp. The Jaguars have had one bad season after another in the last ten years.

They went 11-5 in 2007 and upset the Pittsburgh Steelers in a wild-card game before losing the following week to the New England Patriots. Since, they have won more than five games in a season just twice — and never finished better than 8-8.

The Jaguars also made the playoffs in 1996– the franchise’s second season– after Atlanta Falcons kicker Morten Anderson’s plant foot slipped and he missed a 30-yard field goal in the regular-season finale.

Aside from quarterback Blake Bortles, their first-round draft picks since 2007 have either been huge busts, had substance-abuse issues, or have severely underperformed their draft position. The team capitalized on Bortles in 2014, but Fowler’s freak injury came just a few months afterwards.

Some might say this is simply karma. The Jaguars dumped coach Tom Coughlin after the 2002 season, and he went on to win two Super Bowls with the New York Giants in 2008 and 2012.

In any case, one thing remains clear: the Jaguars were having one of the best off-seasons in the NFL up until news of Ramsey’s injury leaked. Now, we are left wondering whether they will ever catch a break.

Roger Federer Blames Bath Mishap For Injury That Led To Surgery

Federer spoke at a press conference on Thursday, on the eve of his first match since the Feb. 3 operation, and explained that he hurt himself while preparing a bath for his twin daughters. He turned suddenly and heard his left knee click.

“It was a very simple movement, probably a movement I’ve done a million times in my life,” he said. “I didn’t think much of it when it did happen.”

Federer’s ankle soon became swollen, which led him to undergo arthroscopic surgery just a few days later to repair a torn meniscus. He is scheduled to return Friday, when he will face longtime Argentine rival Juan Martin del Potro in the second round of the Miami Open.

Federer, 34, is now playing in Key Biscane for the 16th time, even though he missed the tournament last year due to scheduling reasons.

Following his speedy recovery, Federer made a late decision to enter the tournament this month. He was on crutches for 12 days and has trained without restrictions for the past nine days.

“Expectations are really low, which is nice for a change — just see where I am,” the 17-time Grand Slam champion said. “I’m just really pleased I’m back. I didn’t expect myself to be back here, to be quite honest, after the surgery.”

Federer’s layoff comes amidst a scandal involving Maria Sharapova failing a doping test, and a heated debate regarding equal prize money for men and women.

“I’m happy that tennis has produced some of the greatest female athletes in the world,” he said. “Equal prize money is a good thing.”

Fellow Grand Slam champion del Potro is also recovering from an injury. He returned to the tour in February after an 11-month layoff, during which he twice underwent surgery on his left wrist.

“His injury was much, much greater,” Federer said. “That’s why I’m really pleased for him that he was able to find a way back onto the tour.”

Federer is 15-5 against del Potro, including 5-1 in Grand Slam tournaments. His only loss came in the 2009 U.S. Open final for del Potro’s lone major title.
