Last week, the New Orleans Saints handed the reins of their offense to rookie Tyler Shough, as head coach Kellen Moore confirmed the 26-year-old quarterback will start moving forward after a 1-7 start to the season.

Shough, the second-round pick (No. 40 overall) in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Louisville, replaces Spencer Rattler, who compiled 1,586 passing yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions in eight starts this season.

Moore said, “I’m really excited about this opportunity for him. He has been preparing every week just as he would be if he were the starter; he is ready to go.”

Shough made his first significant appearance when he relieved Rattler in the third quarter of a 23-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 128 yards and an interception. He acknowledged the new role, saying, “It was a good feeling, but we’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Offensive struggles prompted the switch: New Orleans has averaged just 16 points per game and has scored 14 or fewer this season. Moore emphasized that while the change is credited to Shough, the offense as a whole must raise its level.

Rattler will shift to a backup role and support Shough in his development. The Saints are betting that a fresh face at quarterback will spark an offense in need of consistency.

In Shough’s starting debut, head coach Kellen Moore said he saw “some positives” despite the team’s loss to the Rams, 30-10. “Certainly there were some positives in there,” Moore said. “Thought he handled himself well, and so we didn’t get enough opportunities to compete.”

The New Orleans Saints went 5-12 in the 2024 season, a year marked by numerous injuries. Starting quarterback Derek Carr suffered multiple injuries, missing seven games during the season. The Saints struggled for consistency on both offense and defense, boasting one of the worst rosters in the NFL. The nail in the coffin was when head coach Dennis Allen was fired in week nine of the season after losing seven games in a row. The season was terrible, and the Saints knew they would need to head in a new direction after yet another losing season.

The Saints started their offseason by hiring new head coach Kellen Moore, who had just won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles as their offensive coordinator. Moore played as a quarterback in college at Boise State University before playing in the NFL for the Cowboys and Lions, before transitioning to coaching. The other huge news of the offseason for the Saints was Carr’s retirement. Carr had only played two seasons with the Saints, but surprisingly retired at only the age of 34.

New Orleans made lots of other signings in the offseason, like safety Justin Reid, wide receiver Brandin Cooks, center Will Clapp, cornerback Issac Yiadom and safety Julian Blackmon. The Saints also had some losses this offseason, including safety Tyrann Mathieu and tackle Ryan Ramczyk, who both retired. The Saints also lost cornerback Paulson Adebo, safety Will Harris, running back Jamal Williams and guard Lucas Patrick.

The Saints held the ninth overall pick in the NFL draft and selected offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. out of Texas to replace Ramczyk, who retired. The Saints also brought in the quarterback of the future, Tyler Shough, out of Louisville with the 40th overall pick. Shough will get an immediate chance to start after Carr’s retirement. The Saints also made some other notable draft additions like defensive tackle Vernon Broughton, safety Jonas Sanker and linebacker Danny Stutsman.

The Saints head into the 2025 season with numerous challenges under a new head coach and quarterback. They have the 31st most challenging schedule in the NFL, according to Fox Sports, giving them a good chance to gain some momentum during the year. In week one, the Saints host the Cardinals before playing their first divisional game in week eight vs the Buccaneers. The most anticipated games of the season will be vs the Buccaneers, 49ers, Bills, Rams and Seahawks.

The Philadelphia Eagles promoted Kevin Patullo to their offensive coordinator position Wednesday, replacing Kellen Moore. Patullo has been Philadelphia’s passing game coordinator since 2021 and has also served as associate head coach since 2023.

Coming off a Super Bowl victory, the Eagles are dealing with routine staff turnover heading into the 2025 season. Moore, a 36-year-old upstart, took the next natural step and accepted a head coaching job with the New Orleans Saints earlier this month. Philadelphia chose to hire internally to replace him, a clear sign of confidence in the current system. Head coach Nick Sirianni and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will remain with the team.

Patullo is taking over the Eagles offense with two decades of coaching experience. After short stints as a graduate assistant, he accepted his first NFL job with the Chiefs in 2007 and has been employed in the NFL nearly every season since. Over time, he gained a reputation as a passing game specialist and worked with quarterbacks and wide receivers for the Titans, Jets and Colts before heading to Philadelphia.

The Eagles’ Super Bowl victory was the first major success in Patullo’s career, and many might argue that the passing game was the least potent facet of the Eagles’ game this year. Running back Saquon Barkley and Fangio’s defense played massive roles, with the latter force making the difference against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the final game.

On the other hand, Patullo’s past contributions only matter so much, as he is inheriting one of the league’s best offenses. Quarterback Jalen Hurts has an embarrassment of options in the passing game, led by wide receivers A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith. Barkley is coming off a 2,000-yard rushing season. Patullo’s advantage is familiarity, as he has already worked with all of these players and should be able to pick up where Moore left off.

The Dallas Cowboys and head coach Mike McCarthy parted ways on Monday, following a 7-10 campaign in 2024 that grossly underperformed expectations.

The Cowboys began the 2024 season with postseason aspirations, having extended core pieces Dak Prescott and Ceedee Lamb over the offseason. Despite having a stellar regular season record under McCarthy, they had just one playoff win over his four-year tenure. The last straw would be a miserable 3-7 start to the 2024 season, featuring blowout losses to the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles, which never recovered despite a midseason 4-1 push.

The story of McCarthy has been as much a fixture as the team’s performance itself over the course of the season, amplified by the Cowboys’ massive media reach and comments made by owner Jerry Jones. Following the season’s end – a Week 18 loss to the Washington Commanders – McCarthy’s status was still unknown for a week despite Jones implying he had made the decision. The Cowboys even went so far as to deny the Chicago Bears an interview before McCarthy hit free agency.

Jones’ mercurial behavior often made front-page news in the NFL, and doesn’t help with years-long complaints that he is too engaged with the team. “He wanted to be right more than he wanted to win,” said one X user.

Even working with Jones, though, can’t tarnish the shine of a Dallas head coaching job entirely. The roster has young proven talent, particularly Lamb and linebacker/DE Micah Parsons, and coaching America’s Team is a not uncommon dream.

Candidates reportedly include Colorado coach and former Cowboys cornerback Deion Sanders, Eagles (formerly Cowboys) offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, former Jets head coach Robert Saleh and Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier.

Jones is reportedly “enamored with the idea” of bringing Sanders back to Dallas, particularly given his success in Colorado this year, and Sanders “would almost certainly accept” as well, although he has not been officially interviewed yet.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys have scheduled interviews with both Saleh and Frazier. Saleh, a defensively-minded coach, was fired by the Jets after a 2-3 start (the team would go 3-9 down the stretch, with worsening defensive play), and has other options in Jacksonville and Las Vegas. Frazier has been somewhat of a journeyman since parting ways with the Minnesota Vikings as head coach in 2013, working with four teams in that span.

Dallas has also requested an interview with Moore, who is one of the more controversial names on the slate, given the team let him go as the offensive coordinator two years ago. If the request is granted, he will not speak with the Cowboys until the Eagles’ playoff run ends.

While the final decision is still up in the air, there seems to be no shortage of willing candidates (at this point, at least). It remains to be seen who will step into McCarthy’s shoes – and Jones’ employ.

Just two days after the Philadelphia Eagles hired a new defensive coordinator in Vic Fangio, the Eagles hired former L.A. Chargers and Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore on Saturday.

After four years with the Cowboys, Moore spent just one year with the Chargers and will leave a key vacancy for their new head coach and recent national champion Jim Harbaugh to fill.

At 35, he is fairly experienced in creating passing schemes, game-planning and calling plays, something Eagles fans did not approve of in Brian Johnson, who was taking on these responsibilities for the first time in his coaching career. Moore spent time coaching Dak Prescott and Justin Herbert in his previous jobs, so he’s no stranger to coaching elite-level quarterbacks. However, he will need to adjust to a different skillset in Jalen Hurts, who is a more mobile quarterback with different strengths compared to Prescott and Herbert.

Eagles fans had a bone to pick with Johnson during their 1-6 run to end the season and first-round exit in the playoffs. Something changed in the offense after their 10-0 start, and the Eagles will hope that Moore can restore and maintain some of that offensive production heading into the 2024 season. He is a favorable option compared to Kliff Kingsbury and Jerrod Johnson, two other candidates for the position.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirriani proved himself by building an offense around Hurts since he joined the team. He’s faced challenges before and overcame them, but next year, he will need to adjust to new play callers and build a different offensive scheme, especially with the coming retirement of their all-pro center and leader, Jason Kelce.

The loyalty of Eagles fans is strong, but their hate for the Cowboys often proves itself even stronger. Let’s see how they react to a former Cowboy sitting at the helm of their offense next year.

Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback Kellen Moore suffered a major leg injury during practice Tuesday night.

According to ESPN, Moore broke his right fibula and will probably be out 3-4 months after undergoing surgery.

Moore, 27, was carted off the field at training camp in Oxnard, California, team owner Jerry Jones stated.

The injury occurred when a defender rolled up on Moore’s leg after the QB threw a pass. Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News reported that left guard Jared Smith stepped on the Moore’s ankle, causing the injury.

“It’s regrettable, and we’ll basically just take a look at it and address it there,” Jones said. “I don’t have any comments about what, if anything, we’ll be doing there.”

 Moore’s injury obviously creates problems for Dallas’ quarterback lineup, as he was supposed to be Tony Romo’s backup this season. The fifth-year pro threw for 779 yards with four touchdowns and six interceptions in his career, all last season in three games, including starts in the Cowboys’ final two games of the season. He was signed by the Detroit Lions–with whom he spent three seasons– as an undrafted free agent from Boise State in 2012.

“Your heart hurts for him,” Cowboys tight end Jason Witten said. “He just works really hard. … He’ll continue to fight. That’s who he’s been his whole life.”

Third-string quarterback Dak Prescott, a rookie fourth-round draft pick out of Mississippi State, replaced Moore in team drills following the injury.

Per ESPN’s Ed Werder, the Cowboys are considering free agent Nick Foles, who was recently released by the Los Angeles Rams, to replace Moore. The team is also reportedly exploring trades for Cleveland Browns veteran quarterback Josh McCown and Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup Mike Glennon. For the time being, Prescott and Jameill Showers could also serve as secondary options. Jones had previously stated the team wasn’t interested in Foles.

“We wouldn’t be able to give (Foles) any snaps,” Jones said last Friday. “We’ve got four that are going to get snaps.”

Romo suffered several collarbone injuries last year, and it wasn’t the first time in his career he’s dealt with that type of problem. The Cowboys went 1-11 in games that weren’t started by Romo last year.
