The Kansas City Chiefs announced on January 7 that they are “aware” of the domestic abuse allegations made by the ex-girlfriend of their wide receiver, Rashee Rice.

Rice’s ex-girlfriend, Dacoda Nichole Jones, who has two children with him, posted on her Instagram account pictures with bruises and wounds on her body, alleging abuse for numerous years. Jones said that the person who beat her is her children’s dad.

There is no record of Jones filing a police report at the time of her post.

In July 2025, Rice received a 30-day jail sentence for his role in a multicar crash in Dallas that left multiple people injured. He and his friends were racing when the accident happened. He was recorded leaving the scene without checking on the other drivers.

Rice pleaded guilty and received deferred adjudication, meaning the case will be dismissed if he completes his five-year probation. The NFL gave him a six-game suspension due to his violation of the NFL Players’ Conduct Policy

If charges are filed, Rice would be considered in violation of his probation, even if the alleged abuse took place before the accident.

Rice is currently on pace to complete his probation. On the field, he had 571 yards in eight games between his suspension and his season-ending concussion.

The Kansas City Chiefs are currently in a high-stakes decision that could see them leaving Missouri for Kansas, a move that would reshape the region’s sports landscape.

The team has been relatively quiet about the potential relocation, but recent developments indicate a growing interest in Kansas as a viable option.

During a recent hearing before the Kansas legislature, Chiefs attorney Korb Maxwell made a statement that hinted at the team’s openness to a move, “Missouri spoke. Jackson County spoke. They had their opportunity. But now, there’s a moment for Kansas to step up and an option for us all here.”

This statement followed the passage of a bill by both houses of the Kansas legislature to provide state bonds to help finance new stadiums and practice facilities for the Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. The bill is now awaiting the governor’s signature, and there are no indications that a veto is forthcoming.

The Chiefs are using the possibility of a move to Kansas as leverage. By having Kansas as an “option,” the team may be pushing Missouri to create the necessary funds to renovate Arrowhead Stadium. This strategic maneuvering suggests that the Chiefs are looking for the best possible deal to enhance their facilities, whether that comes from Missouri or Kansas.

If the Chiefs do move, it would be a significant win for Kansas, gaining a central professional sports team and all the economic benefits that come with it. On the other hand, Missouri would face the loss of a beloved franchise and its financial impact.

Regardless of the outcome, the Chiefs are poised to benefit from the competition between the two states, ensuring they secure the best possible situation for the team’s future.

Kansas is bidding to become the new home for the reigning Super Bowl champions and Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals. On Tuesday, Kansas legislators approved a plan to finance new stadiums and practice facilities for both teams, potentially luring them away from Missouri.

The bipartisan legislative supermajorities passed a measure to authorize state bonds for the stadiums on the Kansas side of the Kansas City metropolitan area, a region of 2.3 million residents split by the state border.

This plan now moves to Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly, who is not explicitly committed to sign it, but has expressed optimism about Kansas becoming a “professional sports powerhouse.”

The Chiefs, fresh off three Super Bowl victories in five years and bolstered by the celebrity appeal of Travis Kelce’s romance with Taylor Swift and the Royals, are both exploring their options. Their current lease on Missouri’s stadium complex runs through January 2031, but both teams have indicated the need to plan for their future homes.

Korb Maxwell, an attorney for the Chiefs who resides on the Kansas side, hailed the legislative approval as a significant step forward. “This is incredibly real,” Maxwell told ESPN, highlighting the move’s excitement.

Despite longstanding research suggesting that government subsidies for professional sports stadiums often do not yield a positive economic return, Kansas lawmakers acted. Critics also argued that the legislative process needed to be moving faster.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson (R) has not yet commented on the Kansas legislation. Still, Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas vowed to present a compelling offer to keep both teams in their current home.

“Today was largely, in my opinion, about leverage,” Lucas said. “And the teams are in an exceptional leverage position.”

Some Kansas officials echoed similar sentiments. “I think the Chiefs and the Royals are using us,” said state Rep. Susan Ruiz, a Kansas City-area Democrat.

The Kansas House approved the stadium-financing plan with a vote of 84-38, and the Senate followed suit with a 27-8 vote. The measure allows state bonds to cover up to 70% of the cost for each new stadium, with repayment over 30 years using revenues from sports betting, state lottery ticket sales, and new sales and alcohol taxes collected from surrounding entertainment districts.

House Commerce Committee chair Sean Tarwater, a Kansas City-area Republican, emphasized that the Chiefs are expected to contribute between $500 million and $700 million in private funds for the new stadium. “There are no blank checks,” Tarwater reassured his GOP colleagues.

The stadium debate occurred during a one-day special session convened by Gov. Kelly to consider tax reductions following her veto of three tax-cutting plans earlier this year. Republican leaders had promised that the stadium proposal would only be considered after passing a tax bill, which ultimately helped garner support for the stadium initiative.

Economists have consistently argued that new sports stadiums often fail to generate significant net economic benefits.

The shooting that occurred during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade Tuesday, killing one person and injuring more than 20, reportedly began because of an argument in a large crowd. A report Thursday found that roughly half of the victims injured were children.

“We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally,” the Kansas City Chiefs said in a statement Thursday. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City.”

The investigation into the incident, which occurred shortly after the celebratory rally ended, is still ongoing, as three people remain in police custody but have not yet been charged. Two of the individuals are juveniles.

Video footage of the incident seems to suggest that it took place near Union Station in downtown Kansas City, a densely populated area of the city and central hub for the rally.

During a scramble following the gunfire, two people were captured on camera tackling an individual who was fleeing. Many have speculated that these people were attempting to apprehend a potential shooter. Authorities eventually arrived and detained the individual.

Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a popular local radio host, is currently considered to be the only person who died in the shooting, though eight of the 22 reported victims were sent to nearby hospitals in critical condition. The youngest victim is reportedly 8 years old.

In an interview with local news station KSHB 41 Thursday, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said that the incident impacted him significantly. He apologized for a statement he made Wednesday in which he attempted to highlight the security measures in place at the parade. On Thursday, he admitted that the city failed to protect its citizens.

“We let down a lot of people, my family included,” Lucas said. “And, I think we’ll continue to try to do more, 30% pay raise increase for police officers, any number of things, but when a fool can show up at a rally with a gun, and one that can fire pretty rapidly, then I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to be fully safe from all of this.”

Last week it was announced that three-time Pro-Bowler Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs will be partnering with USA Football. Mahomes will host three youth football coaching clinics this summer and his foundation will be providing 15 grants to youth football leagues.

Coach of Webb City High School, John Roderique, and Rockwood Summit High School Coach, Mike Bellars, will be in charge of leading the clinic. The responsibility of these coaches will be to mentor other coaches on how to coach youth players based on their age, skill level, etc.

The clinics are free for youth football coaches. The first of the clinics will take place on July 27 in Olathe, Kansas. The second will take place on July 31 in Webb City, Missouri. The third will be on August 7 in Kansas City.

The 15 and Mahomies Foundation mentioned that 15 youth football leagues will receive a $2,000 operating grant. Selection will be determined based on an online application process.

“Smart coaching can make a lasting and positive impact on kids and their sports development, I’m happy to partner with USA Football to support healthy football practices for coaches and youth athletes across the K.C. region,” said Mahomes.

This collaboration with USA Football is one of many efforts being made by Mahomes and his fiancé, Brittany Mathews, to give back to the community. Mahomes recently purchased a minority interest in the Kansas City Royals, while Mathews is a part-owner of FC Kansas City of the NWSL.

The 15 and Mahomies Foundation has also donated thousands of dollars to local initiatives. One of these donations was for the renovation of Martin Luther King Jr. Park, which will provide opportunities to learn about the work of MLK. This project will also provide a new playground.

“Patrick’s commitment to kids through his 15 and the Mahomies Foundation is immense and uncommon. We value Patrick’s friendship and love of the game to deliver best-in-class coach training and grants to help elevate youth football programs throughout Greater Kansas City,” said USA Football CEO Scott Hallenbeck.

It was announced Monday that the Royals’ all-time winningest manager, Ned Yost, will be leaving the dugout at the conclusion of the 2019 season.

Yost has amassed 744 wins and counting as manager for the Royals.

After being hired in May 2010, Yost led the Royals to back-to-back World Series appearances, as well as a championship in 2015. Since then, however, the Royals have been in a steady decline and have entered into a major rebuilding phase.

Yost has garnered 1,201 wins in his tenure as a manager, good enough to earn him 45th on the all-time list.

In a statement from the Royals, Yost discussed his impending retirement:

“With the development of our young players and our returning veterans, I feel and hope the worst is behind us in this rebuilding phase of our organization. My plan all along was to get us through the rough times and then turn it over to a new manager to bring us the rest of the way. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time here as your manager and will never forget the good and hard times we had together as an organization and a fan base.”

SLIDESHOW: TOP DEMOCRATS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT IN 2020

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was one of many to congratulate Yost on his retirement:

Although no replacement for Yost has been announced yet, a likely candidate is former St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheney, who is currently a special advisor in player development for the Royals. Matheney arises as an option following his stint with the Cardinals, during which he won 55 percent of his regular-season games, three division titles, and a pennant in 2013.

Many changes are afoot in terms of MLB managers, with the Giants searching for a new leader to replace Bruce Bochy and the Padres seeking a replacement for Andy Green. The Royals, who are coming off of a rebuilding phase that spanned multiple years, could be a target destination for many different potential managers looking to lead them back to the postseason.

The NFL has announced the five finalists cities to host the 2019 or 2020 draft.

Finalists Cities for 2019, 2020 NFL Draft

Cleveland/Canton, Tennessee, Kansas City, Denver and Las Vegas are the five cities in the running. The winners are set to be announced at the league’s spring meetings, which will be held in Atlanta in May. Each of the two drafts will be hosted by a different city.

The Oakland Raiders are set to relocate to Las Vegas before the 2020 season. The 2018 NFL draft will be held at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas and will begin April 26.

Philadelphia hosted the 2017 NFL Draft. From 1965 to 2014, the league held the annual selection process in New York City, but then it moved to Chicago for 2015 and 2016.

Canton is the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
