The New York Giants made two notable roster moves on Tuesday, signing running back Najee Harris while releasing wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Why the Giants Needed Harris

The move comes after running back Dante Miller suffered a preseason groin injury, leaving the Giants short on depth in the backfield, according to the team’s official site. Harris steps in as a proven veteran presence, standing 6’1″ and weighing 242 pounds, with 71 career games and 68 starts under his belt and a career average of 3.9 yards per carry.

Harris’s Path to New York

A former first-round pick, Harris was drafted 24th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021 and earned a Pro Bowl selection while rushing for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first four NFL seasons. He signed with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025 but tore his Achilles in Week 3 against Denver, ending that season prematurely. The Giants signing gives him a fresh opportunity to prove he’s fully recovered.

A Familiar Face for the Coaching Staff

Giants head coach John Harbaugh is no stranger to Harris, having faced him repeatedly during his time coaching in the AFC North. “I felt like the hair on the back of my neck stood up when I saw him,” Harbaugh said, describing Harris as “a downhill runner, physical runner.”

Harris’s Mindset Heading In

A two-time national champion and Doak Walker Award winner at Alabama, Harris made clear he’s motivated to reestablish himself after the injury. “I have a lot to prove as somebody coming back from a torn Achilles,” he said.

What It Means for the Roster

Releasing Smith-Schuster clears a spot as the Giants pivot toward shoring up their running game rather than their receiving corps, underscoring how significant Miller’s injury was to their roster planning. With Harris now in the fold, the Giants add a physical, experienced ball carrier just as the season approaches — a low-risk, potentially high-reward addition if he returns to form.

Tensions erupted at Arrowhead Stadium Sunday night after the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Detroit Lions 30-17, when Lions safety Brian Branch struck Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster following the game.

The players met near midfield. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes extended his hand to reach for a high-five from Branch, but a Detroit defender brushed past him. Smith-Schuster stepped in to confront Branch, and things quickly escalated.

Branch hit Smith-Schuster in the facemask, which knocked him to the ground. This triggered a brief brawl between players from both sides before the staff had to intervene.

Later, Branch admitted he lost his composure. “[I] reacted out of frustration after what he felt were ‘uncalled penalties’ earlier in the game,” he said. Smith-Schuster, who left with a bloody nose, said he tried to shake hands and move on. “I was doing my job. I didn’t expect that at all,” he told reporters.

Lions Coach Dan Campbell condemned the incident and apologized to the Chiefs coach Andy Reid, emphasizing that “Branch’s behavior does not reflect the team’s values. It is not who we are; he knows it, and the team knows it.”

Branch, already fined this season, could face additional discipline from the league. The altercation overshadowed a disappointing performance from Detroit, whose four-game win streak came to an end. Kansas City outgained the Lions with 355 total yards, while Mahomes led a steady offensive attack. The Lions will now regroup and look to regain their composure before returning home next week.

DENVER, CO - NOVEMBER 25: JuJu Smith-Schuster #81 of the Pittsburgh Steelers dives for athrown ball against the Denver Broncos at Broncos Stadium at Mile High on November 25, 2018 in Denver, Colorado. The pass was incomplete.

In a shocking turn of events, wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster will stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year deal.

Earlier in the offseason, it was hinted by Smith-Schuster himself that he would not return to the Steelers. So, it had been widely expected that he would join other teams such as the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, or even the Kansas City Chiefs. However, Smith-Schuster surprised everyone by returning to the Steelers.

The wideout broke the news with a series of tweets expressing his love for Pittsburgh. “This is my home, they’re gonna need a wrecking ball to take me outta here!,” he wrote. The Pro Bowler would write more tweets expressing his excitement. “Came in here a young 20-year-old, and you guys embraced me from the moment I got here so much love.”

Smith-Schuster signed a one-year deal worth eight million. This contract was less than what other teams had offered him. The Ravens offered the receiver a nine million with four million in incentives. Like the Ravens’ offer, the Chiefs offered eight million with three million in incentives. However, Smith-Schuster clearly values his home more than money.

Retaining the Pro Bowler does not come without consequences for the Steelers. As a result, the team has less than four million in cap space. To free up more cap space, the team has granted permission for starting cornerback Steve Nelson to seek a trade. Doing so will free the team up to eight million in cap space. On a positive note, the team now has more time to negotiate a long-term deal with Smith-Schuster.

Smith-Schuster was drafted by the Steelers and grew into both a star and fan favorite. Last season, the receiver recorded 831 receiving yards, nine receiving touchdowns and 97 receptions.

The New York Jets are not done making moves to revamp their wide receiver corps. New York is currently engaging in talks with free agent  Juju Smith-Schuster. This rumor was brought on by NFL Network reporter Ian Rapport, who tweeted about it.

Smith-Schuster and the Jets have been linked since the offseason started. The Jets have been one of the more likely destinations for the former Steelers wideout. More than that, Jets quarterback Sam Darnold was teammates with Smith-Schuster during their college years at USC.

Despite the interest and favorability towards landing Smith-Schuster this offseason, New York has not signed him. However, New York did opt to sign former Titans wide receiver Corey Davis.

New York signed Davis to a three-year, $37.5 million contract. The contract gave Davis $27 million in guaranteed money. Davis is a great choice because he is a young receiver who has been improving throughout his short career. Last season, Davis had 65 receptions for 984 yards and five touchdowns for the Tennessee Titans.

Well, now New York is turning its attention towards possibly pursuing Smith-Schuster. Landing the 24-year-old wide receiver would do wonders for the Jets’ offense, especially if the former Pro Bowler can put up consistent numbers like he did during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2018, the wide receiver was elected to the Pro Bowl after hauling in 111 catches for 1,426 yards and seven touchdowns. In three of his four years with the Steelers, Smith-Schuster has produced over 800 receiving yards. Last season, he finished with 97 catches for 831 yards and nine touchdowns.

The stud wideout opted not to re-sign with the Steelers and instead became a free agent. New York currently has enough cap space to sign him, but if they do, then will likely have to release another wide receiver on their team to make enough cap space.

One of the biggest questions in the offseason is whether Juju Smith-Schuster will be back in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform. However, that question has been solved, and it is unlikely that Smith-Schuster will return.

An Instagram poll was created by Sports Illustrated, asking fans a question that said, “Will JuJu stay in Pittsburgh?”  Fans were able to choose between the options “I hope so” or “That’s a negative.” Surprisingly, Smith-Schuster voted “That’s a negative” in the poll. The vote likely confirmed the rumors that he will not be returning to the Steelers in the offseason.

The wide receiver will become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins, on March 17. The former Pro Bowler had expressed a desire to remain in Pittsburgh, but that is no longer the case. Pittsburgh is currently limited by their team salary cap, and the team made efforts by restructuring the contract of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Last season, the wide receiver had 97 catches, 831 yards, and nine touchdowns. In 2018, the wide receiver earned their only Pro Bowl selection after catching 111 passes for 1,426 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday shared images of their new “throwback” jerseys for the upcoming NFL season.

Steelers Share New Throwback Jerseys

The uniforms are meant to pay homage to the Super Bowl XIII championship team from 1978. Steelers wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster showed off the new jersey for a small group of fans at Heinz Field on Wednesday. Multiple players from the 1978 championship team were present, including John Banaszak and Franco Harris.

“We felt it was time to throw it back to the 1970s and the great teams we had,” Steelers president Art Rooney II explained.

The block numbers are the biggest difference between the throwbacks and the current Steelers jerseys.

The team will first don the new jerseys on October 28, when they host the Cleveland Browns.

The Steelers stopped using their famous 1930s-era “bumblebee” throwback jerseys before the start of last season.

SBNation noted how the Steelers’ new jerseys are reminiscent of the Iowa Hawkeyes’ uniforms.
