Former Cleveland Browns quarterback and 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel opened up on his past career struggles.

The 32-year-old was selected by the Browns in the 2014 NFL draft after a promising collegiate career with Texas A&M. However, Manziel suffered setbacks off the field, such as drug use and domestic violence accusations, which limited his time in the NFL.

After two seasons with the Browns, the quarterback spent spells with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes, Memphis Express and the FCF Zappers.

On the season four premiere of Special Forces, Manziel admitted he felt “shame and regret” about his shortened professional career.

“I lost a huge part of my work ethic,” he said. “I gave up on a real opportunity, a football career, and walked away from it pretty quick.”

“I think, after I got my most success and won the Heisman Trophy as a freshman, I think I just got treated differently.”

While at Texas A&M, Manziel registered nearly 8,000 passing yards across two seasons with the Aggies. He became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy award, while also becoming the first freshman in NCAA history to record 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a single season.

Now that college athletes are allowed to benefit from their name, image and likeness, Reggie Bush would like to reclaim his 2005 Heisman Trophy Award.

The former running back led USC to back-to-back National Championships under head coach Pete Carroll. The NCAA banned Bush in 2010 for receiving about $300k in benefits under the table. The running back voluntarily forfeited his Heisman Trophy. Bush argued that the benefits helped him out with his financial situation during his tenure as a student-athlete.

However, now he wants the trophy back. The former USC running back released a statement on Twitter. It’s also been a year since he was welcomed back to USC after being banned for over a decade.

“Over the last few months, on multiple occasions, my team and I have reached out to both the NCAA and The Heisman Trust in regard to the reinstatement of my college records and return of my Heisman,” the statement said. “We left multiple messages for Michael Comerford, the President of the Heisman Trust, but instead received a call from Rob Whalen, the Executive Director, who stated that Mr. Comerford would not be calling us back and that, in any event, they could help us. We reached out to the NCAA on multiple occasions and received no help or got no response at all. It is my strong belief that I won the Heisman trophy “solely” due to my hard work and dedication on the football field, and it is also my firm belief that my records should be reinstated.”

In an interview with Barstool Sports, Johnny Manziel recalled making a “decent living” in college at Texas A&M by selling autographs, however, he denied that he ever took any money before receiving the Heisman Trophy in 2012. On a Barstool Sports podcast, Manziel described two particular transactions that took place in 2013 in which he profited $33,000.

“We’re doing it all sneaky, we don’t want to get caught, we’re trying to learn from everybody else who’s got caught,” Manziel said. “And I may or may not have gone back to this guy’s condo and signed probably 10,000 pieces. He gave me three grand.” Manziel recalled other individuals around him at the time of the story who claimed he was being “ripped off” as he merely received three cents per autograph.

The NCAA launched an investigation into Manziel at the beginning of his sophomore season, but concluded there was no evidence that the quarterback received payments for signing autographs. In 2013, ESPN reported the NCAA was investigating possible payments to Manziel for autographs in multiple locations. ESPN also reported that multiple autograph dealers claimed that Manziel accepted payments. These payments were for the autographing of over 4,000 different items in January of 2013, at an event in Connecticut.

The NCAA and Texas A&M announced Manziel had violated rules prohibiting student-athletes from commercial use of their names and likenesses. Manziel was suspended for Texas A&M’s season opener in 2013. No further punishments were given, allowing Manziel to continue to break records and thrive at the collegiate level.

In Manziel’s recent interview with Barstool Sports, he followed up his admission of wrongdoing by taunting the NCAA. “Take my f—ing 9-4 season away and my Chick-fil-a Bowl against Duke,” he said. Manziel claimed not a dollar had been accepted prior to his winning of the Heisman Trophy and this would be his defense if the NCAA did in fact take away his achievement.

Manziel, now 28 years old, has not played in the NFL since 2015 and had a stint in the Fan Controlled League. Manziel’s football career is believed to be over after his recent statement where he indicated it is “in the past.”

Johnny Manziel will return to the football field once again. The 28-year-old quarterback will be playing for a new startup league called the Fan Controlled Football.

The FCF is a new football league that will focus on the 18-35-year-old demographic. To do so, the league will add elements of eSports into football, allowing greater fan interactions. Fans will have the ability to set team rosters and actively call team plays during games. In addition, games will not be as long, clocking in at one hour. FCF co-founder and CEO Sohrob Farudi explained, “The younger generation isn’t sitting through a three-hour game anymore. Part of our concept is, ‘Let’s give it to them quick and easy.”’

This hybridization is what appealed to Manziel and ultimately convinced him to play football again. “They’re going to let the people [who] join this league be who they are and have fun with it and be a little bit freer than what football is sometimes,” Manziel said.  “That’s definitely what appealed to me.”

Manziel was seen as a talented quarterback when he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2014. However, he damaged by off-field controversies and focusing on partying instead of improving his game. He only played two seasons with Cleveland before being released. Three years after his release, he had a brief stint in the Canadian Football League before being released and barred from the league. Following his CFL release, he joined the Alliance of American Football before the league folded in 2019.

Since then, he moved to Arizona where he enjoys playing golf and watching football. However, he was able to connect with Farudi about the league before deciding to join. Manziel has hyped the league. “It’s going to be very fan-oriented and something I could get behind without being extremely, extremely, extremely serious, the way that my football career has been in the past,” he said. Farudi supported what the former NFL QB said with his own statement, “He got into these other leagues and, I hate to say this, but it’s like the handcuffs were put on, you had to act differently, you had to walk and talk differently.”

The inaugural season is set for February and will feature seven-on-seven games. The league will only have four teams. Each team will have celebrity owners such as Richard Sherman, Austin Ekeler, Marshawn Lynch, Quavo, Mike Tyson and Menery. Teams will play a six-week schedule, games will be broadcasted on Twitch. The field will be a 50-by-35 yard with a 10-yard endzone. Teams will play in a leased Atlanta facility.

“It’s a one-hour game, it’s interactive, you’re watching and interacting at the same time,” Farudi said.

Former Heisman winner and college football sensation Johnny Manziel is truly taking advantage of post-football life during these times.

The former Browns QB took a pretty scary stumble off a cliff in the Arizona lake this week, while he was trying to make the leap down into the water.

Manziel posted a short video to Instagram capturing the moment, captioning “Flawless execution.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CAEZGoYHDk9/

The former gunslinger obviously hasn’t worked too much on his footwork, considering he hasn’t played a snap since his unsuccessful go at the Alliance of American Football league last year.

A few months ago, Manziel tweeted about his situation, saying he would be just fine if he never played football again.

“If I never pick up a ball again it’s all love,” he said. “I was the most lit, most relatable college football player to ever do it. Did things my way and made it way further than I ever could of imagined. The game gave me life and I’ll forever be grateful.”

Manziel also added that he was the “best I’ve been in a long time” and said he was focusing on golf during his Arizona trip.

Manziel also had a run in the Canadian Football League a few years back that proved just as unsuccessful.

In 2013, the former Texas A&M point-man was drafted in the first round. He went on to play just 15 games total, recording 1,675 passing yards with seven touchdowns.

It appears that Johnny Manziel’s football career might not be over yet.

While at the Tristar collectors show in Houston on Saturday, Manziel told reporters that he is interested in a potential opportunity to play for coach June Jones and the upcoming Houston XFL team. “It’s a stone’s throw from College Station,” Manziel said. “A lot of Aggies drove from Houston to College Station. Houston’s a great city that’ll always be near and dear to me.”

Since being released by the Cleveland Browns following the 2015 NFL season, the former first-round pick out of Texas A&M has struggled to find a job in professional football. In 2018, after more than two years away from playing professional football, Manziel signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. Manziel never ended up playing a single game for the Tiger-Cats and was traded to the Montreal Alouettes for who appeared in eight contests for before his contract became terminated.

There is some debate whether or not Manziel will be able to even play in the XFL, much less for Houston. The XFL has a policy that excludes players with criminal records from playing in its league. Manziel faced a domestic violence charge after being accused of hitting and threatening his now ex-girlfriend, although the charges were eventually dropped in November 2017.

“I think I’m in a good place personally. I think I’ve been doing the right things,” Manziel told Fox 26. “When the opportunity presents itself moving forward, we’ll see how things go.”

It will be interesting to see whether or not Manziel suits up for the XFL come February 2020. Coach Jones, the upcoming coach for Houston, believes that Johnny Manziel’s name will end up being in the eligible quarterback draft pool come the XFL Draft. XFL Commissioner, Oliver Luck, has not ruled out the possibility of Manziel potentially playing in the XFL either.

This past Wednesday, the Montreal Alouettes released former Heisman-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Manziel Released From CFL

The CFL released an official statement saying the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner has been terminated. The league has also gone as far as to inform the eight other teams that they wouldn’t officially register a contract for Manziel if they were to even try and sign him. The Alouettes had his full rights for two seasons within the contract.

The commissioner of the CFL, Randy Ambrosie, had this to say, “We advised Montreal that Johnny had violated one of the conditions we had set for him to be in our league. And Montreal announced his release today. We didn’t release the terms of those conditions then and we’re not going to do that now.” The commissioner opted to not publicly release the information on why Manziel was released.

The general manager of the Alouettes, Kavis Reed, told reporters that Montreal would not have released Manziel if the CFL did not force the move. Reed also commented on the issue.

“No, sir. Mr. Manziel’s performance on the field showed that he had a very good upside, but Mr. Manziel violated the terms and we all understood those terms and we have to be compliant with them,” Reed said.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Not wanting to reveal any of the details of Manziel’s agreement, Reed continued speaking on the subject.

“We are disappointed by this turn of events. Johnny was provided a great deal of support by our organization, in collaboration with the CFL, but he has been unable to abide by the terms of his agreement,” Reed said in a statement. “We worked with the league and presented alternatives to Johnny, who was unwilling to proceed.”

Manziel took to Twitter to voice his thanks from the head coach, his teammates and the fans of the league for embracing him. He looks forward to opportunities in the United States to play, stating that his time there helped re-establish his love for the game.

This seems to be another bump in the road for the former Heisman-winning quarterback, as he’s fighting for a chance to play in the NFL again. Manziel has had a very turbulent history, being labeled as a “party animal” while attending college, then once making the league get involved with a domestic violence case. There were also rumors about him being an alcoholic that spread through the media, but he proceeded to take anger management classes and join the NFL’s substance abuse program in order to get back on track.

In an recent interview, Manziel stated that he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has also stopped drinking. Manziel said that’s he’s fully committed to playing football and that he and his agent are trying to find the best situation possible for him to play in.

Across the screen of ESPN’s broadcast ahead of Sunday’s Cleveland Browns matchup against the Oakland Raiders, a banner updated viewers on something they didn’t realize they needed in their sports digest. “Johnny Manziel offers advice to Baker Mayfield probably isn’t something most NFL consumers expected in the midst of the 2018 season, and not something Browns fans should be so enthused about following the success of their rookie quarterback.

Baker Mayfield Gets “Advice” From Johnny Manziel

The first Browns quarterback to win a game in two years, Mayfield drew consistent comparisons to the ex-Browns QB Manziel during draft season and nothing further. Similar in stature and mobile ability, there is little in the way of playing style when considering the two quarterbacks aside from the fact that they are both associated with the Browns. Cue the confusion as to why Manziel penned an open “letter,” complete with video theatrics and a contemplative Manziel yanking his hat down over his eyes repeatedly.

“Never stop being you,” Manziel says with crime docu-series music in the background. “Hope you don’t take a single day, a single snap, for granted.” Why this was relevant at this point in the Browns’ (1-2-1) most successful season in some time is uncertain, but the comparisons between the two should probably stop here, for Cleveland’s sake.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

The Johnny Manziel era was a forgettable experiment that was handled poorly and the Mayfield years are off to a promising start. He threw his first NFL touchdown, a strike to Antonio Callaway, who took it 59 yards to the house in a 45-42 overtime loss against the Raiders (1-3) on Sunday.

Mayfield has shed the boyish, unruly titles placed upon him through his second game as the Browns QB, and so he should ascend the tacky Manziel comparisons. Displaying seasoned poise and confidence in a tumultuous Cleveland franchise that has historically lacked leadership, Mayfield looks like the face of someone that is dedicated and promising. Manziel never bore that distinction, so his “advice” is a little off-kilter.

Manziel most recently started playing with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL.

Playing in the CFL has historically been a good prerequisite to getting into the NFL, as tons of players have proven themselves NFL-worthy while playing in Canada. Manziel hasn’t quite had the opportunity to show off his skills in Canada, as he hasn’t seen the field with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, but that could change following his being sent to Montreal to play quarterback for the Alouttes.

In the official trade announcement, Alouettes general manager Kavis Reed said, “We have acquired an exceptional quarterback with undeniable talent. With his great mobility, his athletic abilities and his instinct we believe that he will have a positive impact on our offence.”

The Alouttes are in desperate need of a shift in quarterback play, as they currently sit in last place in the CFL’s East Division and rank last in both points scored and rushing yards. They have also experienced several injuries to their QBs this season, opening up plenty of opportunities for Manziel to play. Perhaps more optimistic for Manziel, though, is the fact that the Alouettes are coached by Mike Sherman, who coached Manziel at Texas A&M, where he shined as a star in college, becoming the first freshman in history to take home the Heisman Trophy in 2012.

On his reunion with Manziel, Sherman told the Montreal Gazette that, “This is a move both Kavis Reed and I felt we needed to make at this time. Neither one of us believes in the status quo and felt we needed to shake things up. Johnny is someone we believe can elevate one of the most important positions on our team. I look forward to reuniting with Johnny again and working with him.”

We’ll see if Manziel is given an opportunity to play right away as the Alouettes take on the Edmonton Eskimos on Thursday, July 26.

30 SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2018 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Prior to signing a two-year deal with the Tiger-Cats, Manziel worked out in the NFL Spring League in hope of being given an NFL contract. Although he did not perform for the Cleveland Browns well while on the field, his off-the-field issues played a huge part in his failure as an NFL quarterback, including constant partying, ignoring league and team rules, and a 2016 domestic violence charge. However, Manziel has indicated that he’s turned his life around, as he has quit drinking  and is being treated for bipolar disorder.

It’ll be interesting to see how his tenure in Montreal plays out and whether or not he’ll ever be invited back to the NFL. He has shown us that he has a ton of talent in the past, and at only 25 years old, he still has plenty of time to turn things around.

Manziel — a 25-year-old former first-round pick and Heisman Trophy winner — is now weighing an offer to play with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Should he choose to sign with the team, he would be playing with them for two years, per several reports. Rookie training camps in the CFL start May 16, so Manziel has until shortly before then to decide whether to join the Tiger-Cats, according to ESPN.

“I’m straight back to working out and doing what I did when I came here,” Manziel told ESPN of his future after the Spring League. “Everything else will sort itself out. I’m trying to do what I can do to come back to playing football whatever capacity that is.

“We know when deadlines are. We have another month or so to work out and not worry about anything.”

The Spring League is a developmental league that began in 2017. A sort of professional football scouting event, it serves to give rising stars a chance to demonstrate their playing abilities.

Manziel last played in an NFL game on Dec. 27, 2015 with the Browns. The QB — a former Texas A&M standout who became known as “Johnny Football” and was drafted in 2014 — was cut shortly afterwards, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has since counted a long list of issues off the field.

Among the scandals Manziel has been involved with were an incident in 2012 when he was charged with disorderly conduct and an alleged domestic violence incident with his former girlfriend in late 2015.

Manziel — who eventually garnered a reputation as a party animal — was also suspended four games in 2016 for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. In December 2016, the QB took a plea deal that involved him agreeing to receive counseling and have his behavior supervised by prosecutors for up to one year.

Manziel has been training with several coaches since then in the hopes of being given another opportunity of returning to the NFL.

Check out some of Manziel’s highlights here:

More than two months after his sobriety announcement, hard-partying and scandal-plagued former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is reportedly working with QB coach George Whitfield in San Diego in the hopes of making an NFL comeback.

“Football is his absolute focus right now,” said Denise Michaels, Manziel’s publicist.

NFL Network reported Thursday that the 24-year-old former first-round pick and Heisman Trophy winner, nicknamed “Johnny Football,” had breakfast with New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton during Super Bowl week and discussed a “return to football.”

Manziel played two season for the Browns after being drafted out of Texas A&M in 2014. He gained a reputation as an unstable person following a series of off-the-field incidents, which began with missing treatments and being late to meetings but ultimately got worse. He threw for 1,675 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions over 14 games in two years. Manziel also rushed for 259 yards and another score.

The former QB also became subject to the NFL’s personal conduct policy following an investigation in Ohio of domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley, although all charges against him were dropped. Manziel was suspended, dropped by several agents and even spent ten weeks in a treatment facility in Pennsylvania prior to the 2015 season. He was also accused of property damages, and was given a four-game suspension by the NFL for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy.

Earlier this month, Manziel proposed to his girlfriend, model Bre Tiesi. He told ESPN’s Ed Werder on Jan. 20 that he achieved sobriety without any type of professional help. Since then, Manziel has posted several Instagram pictures of himself in football settings, suggesting his claims about being sober are likely true.

Johnny Manziel just seems to be getting into one scandal after another.

Austin, Texas Bar Employee Suing Johnny Manziel, Claiming Broken Nose

The latest comes in the form of a lawsuit filed by an Austin, Texas, bar employee who alleges the former Cleveland Browns quarterback struck him in the face and broke his nose.

The lawsuit, as reported by USA Today, was filed by Eric Newton, a bar-back at New York New York bar who claims Manziel became angry when Newton refused to serve him a drink at 2 a.m. on Sept. 6. (Bar-backs assist bartenders and generally don’t serve drinks themselves.) However, when a member of Manziel’s group overheard Newton’s conversation about what he thought about the ex-QB, one of Manziel’s friends ran off to relay that information to him, the lawsuit states.

“About a minute or so later, Mr. Manziel came downstairs, ran behind the bar, cursed at Mr. Newton, and punched him in the face,” attorney Adam Ward wrote in the lawsuit. “Mr. Newton then grabbed Mr. Manziel to stop the attack, and both fell to the floor. Mr. Manziel then got up and ran out the back staff exit before the police arrived.”

The lawsuit, obtained by USA Today early Tuesday, seeks unspecified damages.

Manziel, who will be 24 on Tuesday, dealt with a four-game suspension to start the season, despite not being on a team. (He was released by the Browns this past offseason). He faced a domestic violence charge and allegations following an incident with his ex-girlfriend and was eventually indicted by a grand jury. Manziel, who also rapidly gained a reputation as a heavy drinker/partier, was also dropped by two agents.

However, prosecutors now say they have reached an agreement with Manziel to dismiss the domestic violence charge against the Heisman Trophy winner.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office said Friday that Manziel will have to meet certain conditions, including seeking anger management and substance abuse treatment, for a year before the misdemeanor charge will be dismissed.

Brittany Dunn, a spokeswoman for the prosecutors, said the agreement was filed on Friday without Manziel present.

Details of the agreement weren’t immediately available.

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel has reached a deal with prosecutors for the conditional dismissal of a domestic assault case involving his former girlfriend.

Johnny Manziel Reaches Conditional Dismissal Deal Of Domestic Violence Case

Defense attorney Jim Darnell stated there was still work to be done, but that he was encouraged following a Thursday morning hearing. A judge set another hearing for Dec. 1, when the case could be settled.

“That’s all in progress,” Darnell said regarding the conditions of any agreement. “Until we get something done, if we do, then we’ll announce it.”

Manziel, a former Heisman Trophy winner, is accused of threatening and hitting former girlfriend Colleen Crowley during a night out in January. The misdemeanor charges carries a penalty of up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Brittany Dunn, a spokeswoman for Dallas county prosecutors, said she couldn’t comment because the case is still pending.

Manziel, who will turn 24 next month, left the courtroom on Thursday without responding to questions. He talked on his phone, walking ahead of reporters and cameramen, and then rapidly got into a car driven by Darnell.

“He’s doing OK,” Darnell said. “Tough kid.”

“Everybody will be required to be here,” Judge Roberto Canas said, referring to the next court date. “Then we will get this case down the road.”

A spokeswoman for Dallas County prosecutors didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The domestic assault charge is just one of Manziel’s several legal issues. He also faces a lawsuit for his alleged involvement in the trashing of a Los Angeles rental home, and Darnell has said he has spoken to the attorney representing a car company that lent a car to the QB and friends. The car was totaled in an accident in April.

The Browns selected Manziel with the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 draft. The team waived him in March following two tumultuous seasons plagued by scandals and inconsistent playing on the field. Manziel also gained a reputation as an intense partier and drinker, behavior that led him to enter rehab. He has been dumped by two agents after both demanded a second trip to rehab for the QB.

Although he’s an unsigned free agent, Manziel served a four-game suspension this season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. League spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed the domestic case remains under review.

Manziel could face NFL discipline regardless of the legal resolution, if he signs with a team. The baseline for domestic violence cases is a six-game suspension.

Crowley alleged Manziel accosted her at a Dallas hotel, and that the confrontation continued downstairs to the valet station. She claimed he forced her into a car and a valet ignored her pleas for help.

The pair eventually drove to where her car was parked in front of a Dallas bar, she said in an affidavit. Crowley said Manziel began to drive, and that he stopped when she attempted to jump out of the car, but then he dragged her back inside and hit her.

In two seasons with the Browns, Manziel played in 15 games with eight starts. Cleveland was 2-6 in those starts. Manziel has completed 147 of 258 passes (57 percent) with seven touchdowns, seven interceptions and a career passer rating of 74.4. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2012 while playing for Texas A&M.

Professional athletes are just like the rest of us, the best is never enough. If we excel at our jobs, we look for a higher position, there’s always something more challenging and bigger than ourselves that we want to do to feel fulfilled.

Consider the change from the NHL to MLB the same as making a career change from a dentist to a stockbroker. The dentist doesn’t have the knowledge of a stockbroker, but because he had to go through school and learn to be a dentist he could learn to be a stockbroker, he’d just have to work hard over time.

Athletes who have achieved success in their respective sports probably think, ‘what now?’. If football becomes mundane for Tim Tebow let him play baseball and don’t scoff, respect. Professional athletes are generally so athletically gifted, and some of them don’t even have to try that hard, that if they decide to play another sport they can absolutely do it and excel at it. No one ever comes out and says they think an athlete like Tebow would be a total failure in baseball, unless you’re Stephen A. Smith, but it’s suggested, and it shouldn’t be.

We shouldn’t shine the spotlight on someone being so bold, and ridicule them if they aren’t immediately as successful as the previous sport they used to play.

Some people view a switch in sports as a publicity stunt, but is changing careers from a doctor to a lawyer a publicity stunt? No. So why do some assume this of athletes?

Tebow, 29, played baseball until his junior year of high school when he batted .494. In between then and now he’s won the Heisman Trophy, two national titles at the University of Florida and spent some time in the NFL. If he can hang in the NFL I’m pretty confident he’s got what it takes to make and play for an MLB squad.

The question of age comes into play, and yes, age is more than just a number when it comes to competing in professional sports. The difference between someone like Tebow at 29 and 22 in MLB can be a big difference. Michael Jordan, 53, probably couldn’t beat LeBron James, but he could hang. In 2013 Michael Kidd Gilchrist, who was the second round pick of the 2012 NBA draft to the Charlotte Bobcats, played some one-on-one with MJ and Jordan schooled him, at 50 years old. When an athlete reaches a certain level, there are skills and knowledge that don’t fade, and neither does the athleticism.

After winning three NBA championships Jordan announced his retirement at 31 years old and started playing AA baseball. Tebow would likely be starting in the minors and working his way up competing against kids a decade younger than himself. What his body can’t help he can certainly make up for in knowledge and experience.

Throughout time there have been many multi-sport athletes and a number of them in the past couple of years that are have made the switch or are attempting to. The point is they have the athletic base to support them and all they have to do is commit to learning the technical skills.

Nate Robinson went to University of Washington on a football scholarship before he decided to focus on basketball. After sometime in the NBA and a stint overseas in Israel he tried out for the Seahawks as a defensive back but didn’t make the cut. Robinson is 32 years old, and was quite undersized for basketball at 5’9”, but the position he tried out for in Seattle is already four-deep. Pete Carroll said it would be challenging for him, but possible to make the switch. “I don’t know if anybody could do it. But if anybody could, it might be Nate. He’s that versatile an athlete and that great a competitor,” Carroll said.

Johnny Manziel was drafted by the San Diego Padres as a shortstop in 2014 the same year he was drafted in the NFL. For Manziel, baseball will always be there for him if he wants it.

Not only are athletes who want to switch sports scoffed at by people on the outside, but even by their own teammates.

During the Olympics the men’s basketball team found countless activities to entertain themselves outside of practice and competition. Jimmy Butler was running routes against Klay Thompson and he made it look easy. In an interview with the U.S. men’s Olympic team Butler half jokingly, half seriously said he could outperform Demaryius Thomas and Antonio Brown. Maybe in this instance he was mostly joking. Kevin Durant kept repeating “Jimmy’s an idiot.” The men’s basketball team has been known for their shenanigans this summer and Butler is the team clown, but if he practiced he could probably play in the NFL.

Perhaps none of them had adidas sponsorships, otherwise they’d know “Impossible Is Nothing.” Kyle Lowry and Harrison Barnes actually do have endorsements with adidas.

The video below highlights the interview with the U.S. men’s Olympic team and Butler’s receiving skills.

If Butler decided to make the switch, likely his Olympic teammates would support him and be the first to show up to training camp.

High achieving athletes are put on a pedestal and people expect greatness in anything they do because they’ve attained that image. Like anything in life, we don’t wake up one day, decide to do something and be the best at it immediately, it takes time. We’d all love to wake up and be ‘awesome’ at anything we decided to do that day but no one is Barney Stinson.

It certainly isn’t the most popular opinion.

OPINION: Manziel’s Football Career Far From Over

After his latest slip-up, Johnny Manziel will be absent from the field for the first four games of the 2016 NFL season due to the league’s suspension of the oft-troubled quarterback for breach of its substance abuse policy, according to reports.

But the fact remains, Johnny Football can still squeeze a quality career out of the talent that had scouts and reporters gushing when he entered the 2014 NFL Draft.

The obstacles Manziel must overcome to revive that career are numerous.

Growing concern over his substance abuse issues have now overtaken the weariness about his immaturity.

Maybe it is a mixture of both.

‘Money’ Manziel still faces charges for domestic violence stemming from a January incident in which his former girlfriend alleges he  “dragged her into his car ” outside of a hotel in the Dallas area, then “hit her several times” as the couple’s argument escalated while the vehicle was in motion.

Johnny Football has become a fixture on TMZ, pictured partying endlessly, despite the efforts of the Cleveland Browns front office and even his own father, who several times have attempted (unsuccessfully) to steer him back on course.

The latest sign came from Manziel himself, who has been living it up this offseason at his palatial vacation home in Cabo San Lucas.

MANZIEL’S A&M HIGHLIGHT REEL

Another desperate plea from his father to get help, however pointed, appears to have fallen on deaf ears.

“He’s a druggie,” Paul Manziel told ESPN’s Josina Anderson last week. “It’s not a secret that he’s a druggie. I don’t know what to say other than my son is a druggie and he needs help. … Hopefully he doesn’t die before he before he comes to his senses.”

Manziel’s father explained that he was able to convince his son to attend rehab earlier this year but “the system failed” and he was permitted to leave.

“I had him in rehab and he escaped and the doctors let him go,” Paul Manziel told Anderson. “He has more money than me, he can outrun me. Like I said, there are two things that are going to happen: He’s either going to die, or he’s going to figure out that he needs help. … You can’t just chase somebody who is not willing to listen.”

Few expected a public response from Manziel, fewer still expected he would apologize to his family for his actions.

But no one could have predicted what he would say, if he chose to speak at all.

Monday, Manziel posted a photo on his Instagram account, donning a Josh Gordon Browns jersey, with the following caption: “@flashgordonxii I won’t take this thing off for a week. You my brother FOR LIFE. JUST WAIT ON THIS COMEBACK!!!! #CaboWabo #JoshAintHere #hiDad #HappyBdayDaveEvans @akarambo_”

One day later Manziel told TMZ he was starting his comeback July 1.

At present, the former Cleveland QB is contending with a likely substance abuse problem, domestic violence charges, a family that has lost faith and a league imposed suspension (with the possibility of another coming down the pike).

Did I mention that he is not currently signed with any of the league’s 32 franchises?

So how could he possibly still have a future in the NFL?

For openers, he has hit rock bottom.

The depths which Manziel has fallen cannot be understated: from first round draft pick, to teamless free agent in two years flat.

It really can’t get any worse, so the only way to go, is up.

And don’t forget that Johnny Football has youth on his side. The 6-foot, 209-pound signal caller is 23 and won’t turn 24 until Week 13 of the 2016 season, his third in the league.

Aaron Rodgers sat for three seasons behind Brett Favre.

Rodgers didn’t begin his career until 2008, at the age of, wait for it … 24. Now the prized prospect of out Cal is throwing hail mary’s to win games and discount double-checking opponents into submission.

Manziel could miss the entire 2016 season and still have a solid shot at redeeming his fall from grace.

Remember, he has only played in 14 games, so his body, absent substances, is just as durable as it was when he entered the league in 2014. He can still sling it around the yard, he can still make plays with his legs and he can still become a franchise quarterback.

The team that chooses to take a chance on him will be in for a pleasant surprise.

“I do believe he’s serious,” an anonymous source told ESPN regarding Johnny Football’s comeback. “He’s talked awhile about knuckling down, getting ready and working out.”

Today, according to Manziel, will mark the first day of his new life.

He has pledged to get clean and get back to the promise people saw in him coming out of Texas A&M as the first sophomore to ever win a Heisman Trophy.

Ten years from now we could be talking about a perennial Pro-Bowler.

Kurt Warner’s NFL career didn’t get jump-started until he was 27. Steve Young sat behind Joe Montana for four years in San Francisco, not taking over as starter until 1991 when he was 29.

Young  is a Hall of Famer, Warner will be soon.

KURT WARNER HIGHLIGHTS

STEVE YOUNG HIGHLIGHTS

Manziel is every bit as talented as those two.

You can never underestimate the power of telling someone “you can’t.” Manziel has heard those words countless times over the course of his brief, but colorful, football career.

Look no further than the comments of Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller, who still believes Manziel can rise from the ashes of his own ruining.

“You can’t ever count anybody out and I think everybody who has counted him out is wrong,” Miller told reporters in April.

This isn’t the swan song for johnny Manziel, it’s the starting gun.

And the race for redemption is officially underway.

Although Johnny Manziel is no longer with the Cleveland Browns due to a series of events displaying misbehavior, the former quarterback has still not completely remained out of sight.

In an Instagram photo of him in Mexico posted Tuesday, Manziel greeted both his father and Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, whose No. 12 jersey he is seen donning in the photo in which he stands on a bluff overlooking the ocean. Manziel posted the photo from a luxury resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The QB also added the caption: “I won’t take this thing off for a week. You my brother FOR LIFE. JUST WAIT ON THIS COMEBACK!!!!”

He then added a series of hashtags including #JoshAintHere and #hiDad, seemingly referring to his father’s harsh warning on Friday that Manziel is in serious trouble with his substance abuse, and that only jail or rehab can now save him.

Since being waived by the Browns in March, Manziel has been charged with misdemeanor assault, has been in two car accidents.

“He’s a druggie,” Paul Manziel told ESPN’s Josina Anderson. “It’s not a secret that he’s a druggie. I don’t know what to say other than my son is a druggie and he needs help.

“He just hasn’t sought it yet. Hopefully he doesn’t die before he comes to his senses. That’s about all you can say. I don’t know what else to say. I hate to say it but I hope he goes to jail. I mean, that would be the best place for him. So we’ll see.”

Clearly, Paul Manziel knows he can’t avoid speaking bluntly about his troubled athlete son at this point.

“We’ve done everything that we can do,” the QB’s father continued. “Life goes on. You can’t just chase somebody that’s not willing to listen. The story is not going to change. It’s the same.

“If I have to bury him, I’ll bury him. That’s the fact. So if not, if he calls me and needs help, I’ll go get him. Until then, he’s on his own. I’ve done everything I can do. There is nothing [else] I can do as a father. Nothing. … It is, what it is. He’s a druggie and everybody needs to accept it.”

Nevertheless, Manziel’s photo appeared to mostly be a shout-out to Gordon, who will be eligible to apply for re-instatement to the NFL from his indefinite drug back on Aug. 1.

Gordon, who sat out all last season, hasn’t been heard from much since April, when he spent time with Manziel in Los Angeles and then attended the Coachella music festival with him around that time.

At the Browns Foundation Golf outing June 16, Browns special advisor Jim Brown told cleveland.com that he spoke to Gordon twice in the past month and that the receiver was in rehab for his substance issues and taking his comeback in a very serious way.

He also stated that he believes the team will welcome Gordon back if he becomes reinstated by Commissioner Roger Goodell and if he demonstrates he’s committed. Finally, Brown said Gordon’s career shouldn’t be over just because he smoked marijuana.

Brown believed he was sincere in his promise to return to the club a committed player.

A few days prior to the trip to Coachella, Gordon picked Manziel up on the Sunset Strip after he was a passenger in a one-car accident. The owner of a luxury rental home agency also told cleveland.com that a man identifying himself as Gordon was with Manziel at a house he’s accused of trashing during two nights of partying.

Manziel is being sued for both the damages to the car and the rental home.

Manziel also told TMZ in an interview on Wednesday that he’s getting “completely sober” on July 1.

One of the women staying in the Cabo house posted a picture of herself holding several bags of what appears to be drugs, but made no connection to Manziel.

“They’re absolutely not mine,” he told TMZ. “I don’t even know that girl.”

Troubled NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel was in the news again Wednesday, but this time he was not the alleged aggressor in a criminal incident.

Manziel told the Dallas Police Department Monday that he was the victim of a hit-and-run.

JOHNNY MANZIEL A&M HIGHLIGHT REEL

Senior Corporal for the Dallas PD, DeMarquise Black said the accident occurred Monday evening, and Manziel produced both a witness from his vehicle and an “impartial” witness, possibly a bystander.

Dallas PD told Manziel’s attorney, Bob Hinton, the vehicle was damaged on the drivers side, but there was no significant injury reported.

The former Cleveland Browns quarterback “hit his head, ” according to spokeswoman Denise Michaels, but she told AP Johnny Football said he didn’t suffer a concussion or any other injury.

Manziel is still facing domestic assault charges levied by a former girlfriend who alleges the former Texas A&M signal caller pulled her back into his vehicle after she tried to exit and hit her during an altercation that took place Jan. 30.

15 Dumbest Moves Made By Manziel

After the Browns took him with the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft things have gone downhill for Manziel.

A series of run ins with the law, allegations of substance abuse and a stint in rehab last offseason have raised questions as to whether or not the kid they used to call “Money” Manziel will ever be afforded an opportunity to earn another NFL paycheck.

He is currently unsigned and without representation after two sports agents refused to represent him until he sought help for his struggle with substances.

NFL training camp will begin in mid-July for most teams.

Johnny Manziel Reportedly Went Missing And Was Then Found Where Expected

The 23-year-old ex-QB was finally spotted Sunday night at ritzy New York City nightclub 1 Oak, where an Instagram user seized the opportunity to take a video with him.

“Yo, we’re partying with Johnny Manziel,” says the man before turning the camera on him.

Manziel was also cornered on Friday night by the owner of a Mercedes that he and his friends had crashed in Los Angeles in April. The owner alleges Manziel has refused to pay the $90,000 in damages he caused.

“He’s not paying for nothing,” the owner said. “Yeah I talked to him,” he then added. “I talked and he said he was going to take care of it and then he didn’t.”

There is a whole list of stupid things Manziel has done this offseason, so many in fact that CBS Sports’ John Breech wrote an entire story about them. Here is what the ex-QB has recently done:

Now add this incident to that list. Manziel surely has a long way to go before he completely gets his act together.

Johnny Manziel is expected to be indicted Tuesday on a misdemeanor assault charge after allegations surfaced that he attacked his ex-girlfriend in January, an attorney for the troubled former Cleveland Browns quarterback stated on Monday.

Johnny Manziel’s Lawyer Says Assault Indictment Expected Tuesday

Robert Hinton told the Associated Press that prosecutors have notified him they expect a Dallas grand jury to sign off on the assault charge for family violence for the former QB. The Class A misdemeanor carries up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Hinton, a longtime Dallas defense attorney with ties to the district attorney’s office, stated he expected a judge to set a bond soon after Tuesday’s formal indictment and that Manziel, 23, would then present himself for booking. He also stated that no discussions about reaching a deal to end the case before reaching trial have yet taken place.

Local prosecutors announced just last week that they had presented a misdemeanor assault case against Manziel.

An indictment would further endanger the former QB’s chances of playing pro football. After being released from the Browns, Manziel was also dropped by two agents and lost endorsements from big brands like Nike.

His indictment comes after allegations made by his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, who claims Manziel accosted her at a hotel in Dallas back in January and later hit her when they drove back to her apartment in Fort Worth. Crowley was granted a protective order, which forces Manziel to not see her for two years, remain at least 500 feet from her home, and pay up to $12,000 in legal fees.

In the detailed affidavit, Crowley alleged that Manziel forced her into a car parked by the hotel following their confrontation in one of the rooms, and that a valet from the valet station ignored her pleas for help. She then stated that Manziel got into the driver’s seat and began to drive. She then claimed Manziel stopped when she attempted to jump out of the car, but then pulled her back inside and hit her.

Crowley also added in the affidavit that Manziel threatened to kill himself as he drove her back to her apartment in Fort Worth, about 30 miles west of Dallas, where police were then called.

Manziel’s father stated that following the allegations, the family had made two recent, unsuccessful attempts to place him in a rehab clinic. Manziel, a first-round draft pick in 2014 out of Texas A&M who is nicknamed ‘Johnny Football’, quickly gained a reputation in the NFL as a partier and a drinker. He spent 43 days last winter in a Pennsylvania treatment facility specializing in care for alcohol and drug dependency.

Manziel’s attorneys and prosecutors could potentially reach a deal to avoid a trial that could include an agreement that the QB seek anger management or domestic battery counseling. Lawyers observing the case have also stated Manziel could undergo some form of substance abuse rehab.
