John Cena Hosts ESPY Awards 2016

While the WWE is marred with investigations regarding CEO Vince McMahon and dealing with the fallout of Sasha Banks and Naomi, there was a positive light shed on Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment as John Cena returned to Monday Night Raw to commemorate his 20th anniversary.

Cena, who debuted with WWE on June 27, 2002, was in the ring for a star-studded event that featured a number of big wrestling names. Names such as Rey and Dominik Mysterio, AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Riddle and The Miz all partook in the festivities, competing in a Last Chance Battle Royal. After it all, McMahon introduced Cena to the ring to celebrate the star’s dominance during his 20-year run.

In a speech filled with emotion, Cena thanked the fans saying, “Today is my WWE birthday. Tonight has nothing to do with anything I had ever done. Tonight has everything to do with you. This 20th anniversary is so very important to me because it means you have allowed me to do this for two decades. You have been brave enough to tell me when I suck and you have also been kind enough to tell me when I don’t. I need to say thank you for making me who I am.”

This was one of the few times we’ve seen Cena in the ring, the last time being in 2021 when he competed at the WWE SuperSlam Premium Event but has since been busy in Hollywood, appearing in the newest Fast & Furious and Suicide Squad movies, as well as his newest show Peacemaker. Cena however is rumored to be competing at WWE Summer Slam 2022.

Retirement does seem on the horizon for Cena, however. Although he has taken a break from the silver screen to entertain the WWE masses, he said that he doesn’t know when he will step into the ring again. In his speech, he admitted that he does not know when fans will see him wrestle again due to his age, but he promised that he does have one more match left in him.

Cena left the stage with a bang, firing up the fans by saying, “We never give up, we’re just getting started, and if you want some, come get some.”

Professional wrestler Roman Reigns said his leukemia is in remission and that he’s aiming for a return to the WWE.

Roman Reigns Reveals Leukemia Diagnosis

The former football player, whose real name is Leati Joseph Anoaʻi, is one of the WWE’s most popular personalities but has been absent from the ring since October.

On Friday night, the 33-year-old wrestler returned to the spotlight. The good news is, I’m in remission, y’all,” he told the crowd during an emotional speech at a WWE Raw event in Atlanta. “So with that being said — the Big Dog is back.”

Reigns was first diagnosed with cancer at age 22, spent 11 years privately battling it and then the disease reared its ugly head again. He immediately relinquished his claim to the WWE’s Universal Championship to fight for his life. It was a move that no one wanted but everyone understood.  Though with how clear-cut a decision it may seem now, Reigns struggled with his choices. “I’m not going to lie — before my announcement in October I was terrified. I was scared. I was insecure. And I didn’t really know if I wanted to share that secret with the world,” he told the cheering crowd. “That overwhelming support that you gave me, it gave me strength, it gave me new life. It gave me a new opportunity and it gave me a new purpose. There is no other job like this. There’s no other fanbase like you guys,” he added.

Reigns later took to Instagram to thank his support system for being there in his time of need.

Roman received support from around the WWE. Most importantly, wrestling legend John Cena posted on Twitter, “Real superheroes exist. Back and with strength and purpose! It’s your yard Roman. Your time is most certainly NOW!”

As the former champion returns to the ring, fans will root for him as he most likely attempts to reclaim his Universal championship.

Professional wrestler Leati Joseph Anoa’i, better known as Roman Reigns, has announced that he is stepping away from the ring due to an ongoing fight against leukemia.

Roman Reigns Stepping Away From Ring Amid Illness

Reigns, a former football player, has become one of the WWE‘s most popular personalities. He announced Monday that he had been living with cancer for 11 years and that it had returned.

He also added that he’d relinquish his claim to the WWE’s Universal Championship as he focuses on battling leukemia.

“When I was 22 years old, I was diagnosed with this. And very quickly I was able to put it in remission. But I’m not going to lie, that was the hardest time in my life. I didn’t have a job, I didn’t have any money, I didn’t have a home and I had a baby on the way,” Reigns said during WWE’s Monday Night Raw program.

He thanked the WWE for giving him a chance after his football career ended.

“I want to make one thing clear — by no means is this a retirement speech,” Reigns said. “I will beat this and I will be back, so you will see me very very soon.”

The crowd then cheered his name as he placed his Universal Title belt on the floor and left the ring.

The biggest names in wrestling then offered their support.

“You have given us your everything including a courageously vulnerable moment. We, your WWE family, give you all of our love and support,” John Cena tweeted.

“Stunned. I liked and respected him from the moment I met him. Sending my very best wishes and prayers for you, Joe,” Mick Foley tweeted.

The WWE also tweeted a video of their wrestlers offering encouragement for Reigns following his speech.

Roman Reigns defeated John Cena at WWE No Mercy on Sunday night to shock scores of wrestling fans.

Roman Reigns vs. John Cena WWE No Mercy news

Reigns delivered a Superman Punch that knocked Cena off balance, then earned the pinfall victory thanks to a giant Spear.

Cena, 40, respected his opponent following the loss, however:

Cena returned to Raw several weeks ago given his free-agent status, and he revealed he intended to call out a Superstar on the Raw roster.

Before he had a chance to do this, however, Reigns entered the ring and began exchanging verbal jabs with Cena.

Cena and Reigns then unexpectedly teamed up after The Miz and Samoa Joe interrupted them

Following his loss to Reigns, Cena explained that he felt as though a weight had been lifted off his shoulders:

Cena has long been considered one of the top wrestlers in WWE, although after a series of appearances in major Hollywood films, Vince McMahon and the rest of the organization seem poised to help Reigns take over that role.

Reigns has competed in the main event at three WrestleManias, and last defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33, thus apparently forcing The Undertaker into retirement.

Brock Lesnar also defeated Braun Strowman at No Mercy.

Bray Wyatt Becomes WWE Champion After Winning Elimination Chamber 2017

Wyatt, 29, beat out John Cena, AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, The Miz and Baron Corbin in the highly-competitive match.

Here is what he said regarding his big title victory:

“To me it was an up-yours to the authority, because when I walked into this, I don’t think anyone ever looked at me and said, ‘One day you’re going to be WWE champion’. I’ve seen so many come and go over the years, and so many that look the part and thought they were something special and they just weren’t. And someone like me, I had to cut my teeth for years just to be recognized. No one looked at my direction. I had to grab them by the throat and make them look me in the eyes and say, ‘Look at me.’ This is a huge accomplishment for me, because no one else expected it but I always did.”

When asked about the greater significance of the win, Wyatt added: “This pretty much tells me I’m in the main event at WrestleMania. That’s pretty cool.”

Styles was the last one he defeated to claim the title. Styles attempted to finish Wyatt off with one more Phenomenal Forearm. Wyatt caught him and rapidly responded with a Sister Abigail to become the last man standing.

SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon had announced before the Royal Rumble on Jan. 29 that whoever emerged from that event as WWE champion would have to defend the title in one of the most brutal matches WWE offers.

Meanwhile, Royal Rumble champion Randy Orton made clear that he refused to let Cena walk away with the big WWE title.

WWE SummerSlam 2016 took place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, in front of a sold out crowd Sunday night. The excitement of the fights weren’t as high as anticipated and the two-hour pre-show before the four-hour event made it hard for the show to keep pace and continue to entertain the fans. As fans entered Barclays Center during pre-show festivities, they bought t-shirts outside and took photos with their WWE championship belts, filled with enthusiasm, but as the show wore on some of that enthusiasm turned to boredom. If you didn’t pay the $120 to get inside, you didn’t miss anything. That being said there were some twists and new titles to be fought for as Finn Bálor became the first WWE universal champion.

The kickoff show featured American AlphaUsos, and Hype Brothers vs. BreezangoAscension and Vaudevillans, and Sami Zayn and Neville vs. The Dudley Boyz and Cesaro vs. Sheamus. Sheamus defeated Cesaro, Sami Zayn and Neville defeated The Dudley Boz, and American Alpha, Usos, and Hype Brothers defeated Breezango, Ascension and Vaudedillans all via pinfall.

Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens defeated Enzo Amore and Big Cass via pinfall. Enzo, the New Jersey native, and Cass, the Queens native entered the arena Enzo wore Yankees pinstripes and pictures of Notorious B.I.G. on his jacket. The two quoted Frank Sinatra lyrics talked about being from the New York, even though Enzo is from just across the river. According to CBS Sports Owens and Jericho used a Pop-up Codebreaker for the pinfall.

For the women’s championship Charlotte defeated Sasha Banks via pinfall. This fight looked a little amateur and scary as Banks nearly landed head-first in the ring and could have broken her neck. Banks maneuvered a top-rope Razor’s Edge by Charlotte into a hurricanrana and on the second lock in she was able to roll Banks over and keep her shoulders pinned for a three count to take the title as new women’s champ.

Nikki Bella, returned to the ring as a surprise and was hungry for a win. Bella had neck surgery seven months ago.

Bella, Natalya and Alexa Bliss defeated Carmella, Becky Lynch & Naomi via pinfall. Lynch took control of the ring at one point in the fight and cleared it, but that was as much as she would do the rest of the fight. Bella went one-on-one with Carmella, gave her a forearm and put her in a new age Rack Attack to finish the fight.

The main event saw Brock Lesnar defeat Randy Orton via TKO. Lensar was up early, he threw Orton into the announce table on two accounts. Orton looked limp and lifeless when Lesnar was setting him up on top of an announce table and suddenly Orton hit an RKO with a crazed look in his eye. Orton and Lesnar traded an RKO and F5 but neither resulted in a three count. Lesnar jumped on Orton and used his MMA fighting style to mercilessly punch Orton. Orton started bleeding from his head from all the jabs. The referee announced a decision for Lesnar by TKO after Orton was being tended to by doctors in the ring.

AJ Styles defeated John Cena via pinfall. Styles countered an Cena Attitude Adjustment into a Pele kick and the Styles Clash for the two count. Cena gave the AA for a two count of his own, Styles missed a springboard 450 off the top rope, Cena hit a flipping pin combination, Styles gave a German suplex that translated to a facebuster. A tornado DDT and top-rope leg drop by Cena did not give him the ‘W’. Styles hit a Frankensteiner from the corner and tried to finish with his Phenomenal Forearm finisher but no dice. Cena hit his AA from the middle rope but couldn’t keep Styles down for three. Styles finally converted an AA into a Styles Clash and Phenomenal Forearm for the three count.

The Universal championship featured Finn Bálor and Seth Rollins. Bálor won via pinfall but it was a back and forth fight with some classic maneuvers. Bálor missed three straight Coup de Grace attempts and on the third attempt Rollins switched it to a Pedigree but only got a two count. Rollins climbed to the top rope to eliminate Bálor, but he missed and Bálor dropkicked him into the corner. Rollins hit a superplex, but Balor reversed another Pedigree into a stomp and dropkick landing Rollins in the corner again and hit a Coup de Grace to win.

Jon Stewart took part in his second SummerSlam in a row. He was caught talking about RAW commissioner, Stephanie McMahon, in a backstage huddle that she confronted him on, of course and got in the ring later in the show and referenced how he leveled Cena with a chair.

Kevin Durant: Oklahoma City Thunder v Dallas Mavericks

The NBA is ushering a new era of free agency that has middling players signing monster contracts and superstars teaming together to get closer to capturing a championship crown.

Gone is the notion that in order to be the best, you have to beat the best.

It has been replaced by another cliche: If you can’t beat em’, join em’.

OPINION: NBA Headed Down Dark Road

Kevin Durant has been the catalyst for this new ideology, where NBA stars no longer look to compete with the most talented players on opposite teams.

Instead, they work in tandem with them.

Durant appears to understand the backlash, perhaps he even relishes it.

Known for his willingness to absorb criticism in order to sharpen his competitive edge, Durant told reporters Thursday that he understands why people are upset, he just doesn’t care.

“Obviously, people don’t like me right now, but it is what it is. I can’t please them all. I’ve got to still go out there and handle my business,” Durant said.

DURANT ADDRESSES DUBS SIGNING IN CHINA

“They’re not going to get up at 9 o’clock in the morning and work on their game for me. I’ve got to do all of that on my own. I can’t worry about people on the outside. I’ve got to go to sleep at night, I’ve got to get up and I’ve got to perform.”

Arguably one of the top three players in the league (definitely top 5), Durant is joining a Warriors team that already boast a two-time defending MVP in Steph Curry, a two-time all-star in splash brother, Klay Thompson, and two-time NBA All-Defensive First Team selection, Draymond Green.

We are all in favor of players being permitted to sign with whatever team they choose.

And Durant, to his credit, has earned that right after raising an Oklahoma City Thunder franchise to heights never imagined for a city that resides in the No. 43 media market and has no other professional sports.

The problem is that now that Durant has waved goodbye to OKC, rumors have begun to swirl about Russell Westbrook’s interest in being traded.

Five years ago, the Thunder had the best crop of young talent in the NBA. Durant and Westbrook were flanked by James Harden, and a young Serg Ibaka was beginning to establish himself as one of the best rim protectors in the league.

Harden new the score.

He didn’t want to play second, or sometimes third fiddle. He wanted to show the world what he could do as an individual, and that’s what free agency used to be about.

OKC HAD A SUPERTEAM FIVE YEARS AGO

Not anymore.

And with the rush to create these “Superteams,” mid-market clubs like OKC, Phoenix and Utah are being squeezed out.

Minnesota and Milwaukee would be in the same boat had it not been for some savvy draft analysis and trades to acquire lottery-caliber talent.

Even Commissioner Adam Silver is against teams hoarding superstar talent.

“I don’t think it’s good for the league,” Silver told reporters at a press conference Wednesday. “Just to be really clear.”

Silver didn’t sugarcoat who he was making reference to in his comments.

“By the way, I don’t mean to be so cryptic. In the case of Kevin Durant, I absolutely respect his decision, once he becomes a free agent, to make a choice that’s available to him,” Silver said. “Having said that, I do think to maintain those principles that I discussed in terms of creating a league in which every team has an opportunity to compete, we do need to re-examine some of the elements of our system.”

JOHN CENA HIGHLIGHTS NBA OBSESSION WITH VILLAINS AT 2016 ESPYS

It is fair to say that Oakland, where Golden State is based, is not a top market.

But if a team wins a championship, reaches back-to-back NBA Finals, sets the league record for wins and then signs a future Hall of Famer, you’ve got to assume there will be a concurrent spike in the franchise’s revenue.

That is to say, the Warriors cannot be called a small-market team anymore when their roster yields two of the most marketable athletes on the planet.

But the ripple effects of these squads saturated with All-Stars banishes would-be stars to irrelevance.

Eric Bledsoe has become one of the premier point guards in the NBA since joining the Suns in 2013. Last season Bledsoe averaged 20.4 points and 6.1 assists per game.  At 26, he is coming into his prime.

But Bledsoe will never bring glory to the Valley of the Sun.

BLEDSOE LIGHTS UP THUNDER DEFENSE

It is much more likely that a team like the New York Knicks or another club seeking to build the next Superteam will swoop in and sign Bledsoe away, or stage a trade to acquire him.

“I don’t think you can villify the Warriors or Durant for the decision,” His and Hers Host Michael Smith said Wednesday. “I thought (Durant) had plenty (of talent) to win a championship in Oklahoma City.”

Durant’s new Dubs teammate, and 2015 Finals MVP, Andre Iguodala said Thursday that the Thunder should be sitting atop the NBA throne, not champion Cleveland Cavaliers.

“They were the best team last year in the league, in the playoffs. They were better than us,” Iguodala said of OKC in an interview with Power 105..1 “They were better than Cleveland. They were the best team in the playoffs. They should’ve won the championship.”

Iguodala, himself, was once a star for a struggling 76ers franchise before a trade hooked him up with a crop of young talent in Denver. The Nuggets set a franchise record for wins (57) in Iggy’s first year and look how far Philadelphia has fallen.

OKC seems destined for a similar fate.

A season after blowing a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference Finals, it could be assumed that the Thunder would have an even bigger chip on their shoulder, motivating them to bring a championship home to the 45th media market.

Now we know that’s not gonna happen. And as Durant leaves town, the dominoes are beginning to fall.

By next season, the Thunder maybe banished to irrelevance. And more teams will follow their example on the dark road the NBA has chosen to travel.

ESPN’s flagship awards show aired live on ABC from the Microsoft Theater in L.A.

Grammy winner Justin Timberlake, Vice President Joe Biden, Emmy winner Bryan Cranston, and former Super Bowl champion Richard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks were among the presenters, while beloved TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager was honored with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award.

The ceremony began with a somber and powerful monologue delivered by NBA players Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James, who called for a stand for social change following the recent police shootings of black men.

Soon after the recent deadly shootings of Philando Castile in Dallas, Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Anthony posted an Instagram plea using an iconic June 4, 1967, photo of Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown and Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) and others from what is known as the Ali Summit. That was the Cleveland news conference in which Ali’s fellow athletes flanked him to show support as he announced his refusal to fight in the Vietnam War.

Anthony used the historic photo to implore his fellow athletes to to “step up and take charge.”

“There’s NO more sitting back and being afraid of tackling and addressing political issues anymore,” he wrote in his caption. “Those days are long gone.”

The foursome then went on to denounce the violence, injustice and racial profiling that has permeated the nation.

Former President Bill Clinton took to Twitter to express how inspired he was by the basketball stars’ words, which also resonated with many others.

Cena, 39, then followed up with a hilarious and biting monologue of his own. Right off the batt, he poked fun at the NBA draft, the 2016 Rio Olympics and why he hosted, “instead of someone else like Kevin Hart.”

Cena explained that the WWE is scripted and so there’s a lot of crossover with professional sports. For example, “Cleveland won something,” he says, and adds that the Cleveland Cavaliers winning the NBA Championship must have been scripted, because there’s no way that actually happened.

The WWE star also commented on Odell Beckham Jr.’s look, Peyton Manning’s love story with the NFL, and Tim Duncan‘s retirement (“He announces it in the middle of the night in the off-season, what a diva right?”), among countless other sports stars.

Cena also blasted NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, saying: “The one place the WWE has you beat, the one thing we have that you don’t: Vince McMahon. A maniacal billionaire pulling the strings behind the scenes who uses every trick in the book to manipulate things to his advantage, any way he can. That is something that is way too crazy for real sports.”

The screen behind Cena then flashed a picture of Goodell.

Cena finished by saying, “Or maybe we have more in common than you think.”

Goodell’s reputation for handling scandals in the NFL– the Deflate-gate controversy among the most recent ones– has been shaky over the past few years.

Biden presented Sager with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance for his strength and determination while fighting leukemia for nearly 18 months.

“I will continue to keep fighting, sucking the marrow out of life as life sucks the marrow out of me,” Sager said in his speech.

Sager, who has worked for Turner Sports for 34 years, missed 11 months while undergoing treatment for leukemia and a bone marrow transplant from his son before returning to TNT’s NBA coverage in March 2015. But he revealed in an interview with HBO in April that his cancer was no longer in remission.

The Batavia native threw out the first pitch at Chicago’s Wrigley Field on June 1 as part of “Conquer Cancer Day” festivities.

Timberlake presented the Icon Awards, three of the biggest awards of the night, to Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning and Abby Wambach.

Sunday night’s WrestleMania 32 was certainly an epic event filled with high-energy competition and a string of surprise appearances at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

WrestleMania 32 Highlights: Brie Bella Wins For Divas,

Here are the top moments of the night:

Brie Bella led Team Total Divas to victory over Team B.A.D. and Blonde in an intense five-on-five tag team match. Bella finished off the match by using husband Daniel Bryan’s signature “Yes Lock” move to force Naomi to tap out. Bryan recently announced his retirement from WWE, so this unexpected tribute seemed to mean a great deal to the fans.

Bella’s twin sister Nikki Bella, who is still recovering from a neck surgery, then came out to join Brie, Alicia Fox, Page, Nattie Neidhart and Eva Marie in the ring to celebrate the Divas’  victory.

The five ladies from pop group Fifth Harmony also treated the crowd at AT&T Stadium to a great rendition of “America the Beautiful” before the start of the night’s biggest matches.

The next big surprise was the arrival of Hall of Famers “Stone Cold” Steve AustinShawn Michaels and Mick Foleyall of whom came in to face The League of Nations’ SheamusAlberto Del RioRusev and King Barrett.

Austin, also nicknamed “The Rattlesnake,” got the crowd in his hometown excited by performing his “Stone Cold Stunner” finishing move a few times before cracking open an ice cold beer just like he used to.

Rapper and Reggae artist Snoop Dogg also then made a surprise appearance, teaming up with singer Raven Felix to perform WWE Diva Sasha Banks‘ theme music as she made her way to the ring for her Triple Threat Women’s Championship match versus Charlotte and Becky Lynch. However, Charlotte won the title thanks to her “Figure 8” move, after forcing Lynch to tap out.

Finally, WWE legend and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson came out into the stadium, literally on fire, holding a giant flamethrower before announcing that WrestleMania 32 had set an all-time attendance record. In a surprising twist, the Wyatt Family’s Bray WyattErick Rowan and Luke Harper rudely interrupted The Rock’s speech and threw down a challenge.

Johnson accepted and quickly laid out Rowan with a “Rock Bottom” in just six seconds. The Rock found himself outnumbered but luckily, a familiar friend swooped in just in time to help him out: John Cena!

Between Cena’s “Attitude Adjustment” and The Rock’s “People’s Elbow,” nobody stood a chance. The crowd was clearly surprised by the treat of having not one but two WWE superstars in the ring at the same time.

Total Divas airs Tuesdays at 9 pm on E!

Comedy director/producer Judd Apatow is releasing  another flick this summer, Trainwreck, starring  Amy Schumer, which follows a partying workaholic who refuses to settle down.

The movie will feature a few athletes: the trailer includes WWE wrestler John Cena, who gets accused of being Mark Wahlberg, and Lebron James. Though Cena appears to only have a cameo, James is actually extensively in the trailer in the role of Bill Hader’s character’s good friend.

According to Trainwreck’s IMDB page, other notable appearances include legendary tennis star Chris Evert and hall of fame announcer Marv Albert. But like most Apatow products, expect even more cameos, especially since a portion of the film takes place in the sports world.
