Ben McAdoo on Giants' performance this season

The New York Giants are doing some major cleaning just four weeks before the end of the regular season.

Giants fire Ben McAdoo, Jerry Reese news

The team announced Monday morning they are firing head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese.

McAdoo’s dismissal comes less than a week after he decided to bench quarterback Eli Manning — who had made 210 consecutive starts dating back 13 years — and replace him with backup Geno Smith for Sunday’s matchup against the Raiders in Oakland. The move provoked outrage among several former Giants and fans of the team alike, and all of those people seemed to be justified after the G-Men lost to Oakland 24-17 on Sunday to drop to 2-10 this season.

Although Reese and owner John Mara had recently stated the team would not make any major coaching changes until after the regular season was over, rumors had already begun circulating prior to the contest against the Raiders that 40-year-old McAdoo’s job could lose his job should the Giants lose.

“I understand where the fans are coming from,” McAdoo said after Sunday’s defeat. “If I was on the outside looking in, I’d feel the same way they feel.”

McAdoo — who is in his second season as Giants head coach after serving as the team’s offensive coordinator for two years under former coach Tom Coughlin — also said this following the loss, however: “I’m going to coach this team as long as my key card works.”

In 2016, McAdoo led the Giants to a 11-5 record (and second in the NFC East) and a postseason appearance before the team lost to the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the playoffs. The run tied a franchise record for the best regular-season finish by a first-year head coach.

Manning mentored Smith before Sunday’s game after the Giants announced they were looking to give more playing time to the former Jets quarterback and to rookie Davis Webb.

The Giants’ offense has particularly struggled this season. McAdoo even said in September that “no part of [the Giants’] offense was functional.”

Smith struggled in Sunday’s loss. He completed 21 of 34 passes for 212 yards with a touchdown and two fumbles. The fifth-year quarterback also slammed his former coach Rex Ryan — who is now an ESPN analyst — after he learned Ryan had no interest in working with him again.

“But I did see one of my ex-coaches say he didn’t want me to be his quarterback, and that really upset me, you know? A guy that we saved his job in 2013, and we fought our ass for him both years, and for him to come out and say that just shows you how much of a coward he is.”

Smith signed with the Giants in March after playing his first four seasons with the Jets. He was Ryan’s starting quarterback his first two seasons. Smith also said he was very fond of McAdoo, and that he hoped to play for him longer.

The 27-year-old QB later apologized for his comments about Ryan on Twitter:

The Giants will host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, then the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 17. They then visit the Arizona Cardinals on Christmas Eve before hosting the Washington Redskins on Dec. 31.

New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese is refusing to reveal details about the team’s negotiations for a new contract with wide receiver Odell Bekcham Jr.

Jerry Reese John Mara on Odell Beckham Jr.

“I’m not going to talk about contracts,” Reese said Thursday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford. “We’re going to keep all of our options open in respect to any contract.”

Reese added that he and Beckham have not yet spoken this offseason, and that he plans to tell the receiver to “be a good teammate” next campaign.

“He’s been on vacation and I’ve been on vacation, so we haven’t talked,” he said.

The Giants reported for training camp on Thursday. Earlier in the day, co-owner John Mara said discussions for a new contract with Beckham hadn’t yet begun, but that they would start “at the appropriate time.”

“I don’t think we have a time frame on it,” said Mara. “But we certainly don’t want to see him playing in another uniform.”

Beckham, 24, is set to earn $1.839 million in 2017, and the Giants exercised his fifth-year option for 2018. The wideout, who is entering his fourth season with the team, missed voluntary offseason workouts but returned for mandatory minicamp last season. Beckham reportedly skipped those workouts in the hopes of landing a new contract.

Mara also said he believes Beckham is a “good kid” and pointed to the youngster’s noble deeds off the field. Just last weekend, Beckham coordinated with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to visit a 9-year-old boy in Texas who is battling cancer whose dying wish is to meet the wideout, whom he called his hero.

“Listen, he’s as exciting a player as we have had on this team in my lifetime, and he brings a lot of energy, a lot of big plays to us,” Mara said. “And when you cut through everything else, he actually is a really good kid. He does a lot of wonderful things off the field that people don’t know about. He needs to work on controlling his emotions a little bit more. But when he is on the field, the other teams have to pay attention to him … and he strikes fear into the eyes of the other team. As long as you have that ability, he makes your team better. He just adds a lot to us. We really haven’t had a player like that here for a long time.”

Despite Beckham’s series of well-known incidents of arguing with opponents and officials during games in his three-year career thus far, Mara said he is confident the wideout will behave more maturely.

“I think he’s a work in progress, I think he’s going to mature,” said Mara. “I had a great conversation with him in the spring about that. I think he understands that. But he’s always going to be an emotional player, and we’re going to have to live with, hopefully, an occasional and rare outburst every once in a while because he wants to win so badly. But I think he is going to mature. He’s 24 years old. You weren’t the most mature guy at the age of 24, were you?”

Jerry Reese has stated what he hopes to see out of the New York Giants’ offense next season, and the general manager says the team’s tackles, particularly Ereck Flowers and Bobby Hart, will have to improve substantially.

Flowers, the ninth overall pick out of Miami in the 2015 NFL Draft, and Hart, a seventh-round pick out of Florida State from that same year, both struggled last season, but Reese appears to remain confident the third-year offensive tackles can make the leap for the 2017 season this fall.

“It’s almost kind of developmental, some ups and downs as young players but we expect these guys to make a significant jump this season, because they’ve been in the league already,” Reese said Monday on WFAN, via the New York Post. “Those guys could have been in this draft class.”

Earlier this offseason, the only offensive player the Giants signed as a free agent was backup tackle D.J. Fluker, a former Chargers star.

However, Big Blue also added another offensive tackle to their roster during the sixth round of last weekend’s draft: University of Pittsburgh’s four-year starter Adam Bisnowaty, a left tackle who was selected as the 200th overall pick.

Reese then signed two more plays from the undrafted free-agent pool: USC tackle Chad Wheeler and guard Jessamen Dunker.

The Giants gave Wheeler a $20,000 signing bonus.

“I think probably the reason he didn’t get drafted, there were some off-field issues people were concerned with,’’ Reese said. “To get him as a free agent, we feel if he has a chance, if he has his head on right.’’

Those off-field issues included an altercation Wheeler had with Los Angeles Police in December 2015. Police responded to a call regarding a man punching walls and windows at his apartment complex, potentially under the influence. Wheeler was not arrested, although he was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

As for Bisnowaty, Reese complimented the tackle for a being a strong player, and even called him “a David Diehl-type of guy,’’ comparing the Pittsburgh tackle to the 2003 fifth-round draft selection who eventually became a starter for ten years at several positions on the offensive line.

“He’s tough, he’s big, he’s gonna bring the same intensity every day, you know what you’re gonna get every day from this guy,’’ Reese said of Bisnowaty. “I just saw guys in this past [veteran] free agent group make millions of dollars with the same skill-set.’’

Reese added he will continue to oversee the waiver wire and potentially pursue a trade for additional offensive line help.

Giants coach Ben McAdoo confirmed on WFAN that Paul Perkins will be the starting running back next season, a decision that does not come as much of a surprise.

“We feel Paul Perkins is gonna grow,” McAdoo said. “He didn’t even have an offseason last year.”

The Giants waived quarterback Keith Wenning from Ball State and running back George Winn from Cincinnati after drafting players at those positions last week. New York also got Mississippi tight end Evan Engram in the first round (No. 23). of this year’s draft on Friday.
