Stephen Curry will remain with the Golden States Warriors for the next five years after agreeing to a four-year extension worth $215 million.

At 33 years of age, Curry showed no signs of slowing down this past season. He led the league in scoring with a career-high 32.0 points per game, was named to the All-NBA First Team and finished third in MVP voting behind Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic.

The Warriors fell short of the postseason in 2021, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies in the play-in tournament. With Klay Thompson eventually returning from a torn Achilles, the continued development of former No. 2 pick James Weisman and the addition of recent lottery picks Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody, Golden State is confident it can prolong its championship window with No. 30 leading the way.

By signing this extension, Curry becomes the first player in NBA history to ink multiple deals worth at least $200 million.

He re-upped with Golden State in the summer of 2017 for $201 million. His most recent deal will take him through 2026, where he will be 38 years old, thus setting himself up to play for the Warriors for the entirety of his Hall-of-Fame career.

Warriors' Steve Kerr Wins NBA Coach of the Year

The irony of Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr complaining about his team’s lack of proper box outs and all around struggle to crash the glass effectively in Thursday night’s 126-114 loss to the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves, is quite hilarious. Was it not Kerr and the Hampton’s five, the lineup of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andre Igoudala, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green that pummeled the NBA into oblivion for two consecutive championships and almost a third, had it not been for injuries? They fundamentally altered the NBA, making the use of traditional centers almost obsolete. Curry himself has almost single-handedly destroyed the center’s position in the modern NBA, with his ability to destroy any big man in a five one switch on the pick and roll.

Kerr didn’t just come for his own team on Thursday night, he came for the entire league. “It signals to me a modern team,” Kerr said. “This is the modern NBA; guys don’t box out. It’s just the way it is. Every night on League Pass, I see the same thing. Players let guys come in from the weak side, and they think, ‘I’ll just get the rebound.’ It’s a disease that’s rampant in the NBA. The problem is, if you’re a real small team like us, then it’s going to hurt you more than it will hurt other teams.”

The Warriors are playing smaller than normal at this point in the season due to injuries and lack of proper team building. James Wiseman, the second overall pick and starting center, is sidelined for the rest of the season with a torn meniscus. Backup forward Eric Paschall, a key player on the glass for the reserves, has been on the injured reserve for quite some time as well. The backup is Kevon Looney, who stands at 6-foot-9, undersized for a center. Looney excels on defense and in his ability to switch on smaller players, not in rebounding. The Warriors appear to resemble most teams after a long period of dominance, older, worn out, and improperly constructed due to win-now moves that stripped them of future assets and potential.

The Memphis Tigers‘ top recruit, James Wiseman, officially withdrew from the university Thursday, after playing only three games. The confirmation was posted on Wiseman’s Instagram page along with his intention of entering the NBA Draft.

Wiseman has been in headlines for other reasons besides his talent this season. On November 5, the NCAA informed Memphis that the freshman sensation had been ruled ineligible “based on alleged recruiting violations.” That same night he made his college debut scoring 28 points and grabbing 11 boards.

His ineligible status came from controversy over an $11,500 payment to Wiseman’s mother, Donzaleigh Artis, from Memphis Head Coach Penny Hardaway, for moving expenses during the summer of 2017. Since Hardaway donated $1 million to the team’s athletic department in 2008, he is considered a “booster” and is not permitted to provide financial assistance to prospective student-athletes and/or their families, according to NCAA bylaws.

The university attempted to appeal the NCAA’s ruling and Wiseman’s lawyers filed for a temporary injunction that allowed him to play while the situation was examined. Much to both parties chagrin, Wiseman was suspended in November for 12 games.

Hardaway released a statement that said, “We wish nothing but the best for James in his future endeavors as he follows his dreams. He will truly be missed.” The coaching staff was reportedly surprised at his decision, but the Nashville native is currently meeting with sports agencies, according to sources.

Golden State Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr was asked about the Memphis freshman leaving school. Despite the fact that he can’t directly talk about a prospect, according to NBA tampering rules, Kerr told ESPN, “Two of the top prospects are playing professionally in Australia. I think the trend is — guys are at least starting to think of other options. I know there’s been players who have just taken a year off or played at the IMG Academy until they were draft-eligible. So the NBA is getting a lot better with player development through the G League. I know there’s been talk of changing the rule in terms of draft eligibility. So there’s all kinds of things stirring out there and it looks like the players are considering their options.”

The 7’1”, 240 pound center was the top ranked freshman in 2019’s “ESPN 100.” Although his play was limited, his stats and his NBA-ready physique were indicative of what he could become. Wiseman averaged 19.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and three blocks per game this season and according to experts, Wiseman is projected to be drafted number one overall in the 2020 NBA draft.

Memphis men’s basketball on Thursday declared freshman center James Wiseman ineligible to play after he dropped a lawsuit against the NCAA.

The Tigers also said they will apply for Wiseman’s reinstatement by the association.

The lawsuit Wiseman filed last week was essentially a restraining order and allowed him to play after the NCAA claimed he was ineligible because Memphis coach Penny Hardaway paid the center’s mother roughly $11,500 for moving expenses after he relocated from Nashville in the summer of 2017. The Tigers claimed they were unaware of the payment. Hardaway was Wiseman’s AAU coach at the time and ultimately coached him at Memphis East High School. Wiseman’s lawyers said in a statement that their client was dropping the suit because it had “become an impediment” to the Tigers’ attempts to come to a fair agreement with the NCAA about his eligibility status.

SPORTS FIGURES WHO DIED IN 2019 – TRIBUTE SLIDESHOW

Wiseman last played in Memphis’s (2-1) 82-74 loss to Oregon on Tuesday. In his first three games this season, he averaged 19.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3 blocks. A county judge in Tennessee allowed him to play in the Tigers’ 92-46 thrashing of the UIC Flames on Friday after issuing a restraining order.

The 7-foot, 240-pound Wiseman is the top-ranked prospect in the 2019 class and is speculated to be the No. 1 pick in next year’s NBA draft. He will surely garner much attention in the coming weeks given the increasing national attention on the scandal involving college basketball coaches and Adidas executives making illegal payments to the families of newly-recruited NCAA players.

Memphis is first in the American Athletic Conference and was ranked 13th in the AP Top 25 poll before the loss to Oregon. The Tigers will next host Alcorn State on Saturday.
