The Tennessee Titans released safety Jamal Adams this week, at the defender’s request. Adams joined the Titans to reunite with defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, but he only appeared in three games in a limited capacity.

Wilson, who worked with Adams as an assistant for the New York Jets, was courteous in his comments toward the safety after his release.

“At this point, wish Jamal all the best going forward, it just didn’t work out here,” Wilson told reporters. “He’ll have great success wherever he goes.”

When Adams was preparing for his first appearance with the Titans after overcoming numerous injuries in past seasons, he claimed to be eager to contribute to an improving defense. After just one start and three total appearances in six weeks, however, it became clear that he would not contribute nearly as much as he intended. This is reportedly what motivated him to request his release.

At age 29 and with an extensive injury history, Adams is not the player that made three straight Pro Bowl appearances for the Jets and Seahawks between 2018 and 2020. Still, he had enough to offer for the Titans to give him a chance in July, and he will likely earn more opportunities in the future.

Several early playoff contenders, like the Commanders and Buccaneers, have managed to compete well this season despite obvious weaknesses on defense. Adams could be a worthwhile addition for both teams. It’s also possible that the safety’s former teams come calling, as both the Seahawks and Jets are dealing with injures in their secondaries.

The exact details of Adams’ tenure with Tennessee, which included a trip to the reserve list, will likely be a red flag for some teams. The stint could have gone sour for personal reasons or regression on the field. Adams’ past success will earn him another chance, but his time with the Titans was a misstep for both parties.

Safety Jamal Adams made his first start of the 2024 season for the Tennessee Titans this weekend. The three-time Pro-Bowler is trying to revive his career after suffering injuries in four straight seasons.

In his debut game for Tennessee, Adams took  on the New York Jets, who drafted him in 2017. Despite having extensive issues with the Jets and general manager Joe Douglas in the past, Adams said it feels meaningful to play New York in his return.

“I respect the hell out of the Jets,” Adams said. “They drafted me. I mean, the Jets is tatted on me, man. It’s part of my story. My father was drafted to the Giants, I was drafted to the Jets. My mom is from Yonkers, New York, and I have a lot of family up here. I still have my house there. It is still home.”

Adams spent some of his best years in the league on the Jets, making his first two Pro Bowl appearances with the team in 2018 and 2019. In the former year, his second season in the league, he recorded 115 combined tackles, immediately establishing himself as a star defender.

Going from the Jets to the Seattle Seahawks in 2020, Adams had his most dominant season with 9.5 sacks and 83 combined tackles. Several injuries took their toll in subsequent years, however. Between 2021 and 2023, he only started in 22 games, suffering a torn quad, torn labrum, a concussion and undergoing hip surgery. He was released by Seattle in March.

The Titans signed Adams to a one-year deal in July, but he has had limited time to practice with the team while recovering the aforementioned surgery.

The Jets beat the Titans 24-17 on Sunday.

The Seattle Seahawks released key safeties Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs, as well as tight end Will Dissly on Tuesday, the team announced.

The Seahawks posted three consecutive “thank you: posts on X to “Uncle Will,” “Prez” and “Nino” (Dissly, Adams and Diggs) on Tuesday following the official announcement.

The most significant financial adjustments for the Seahawks come through Adams. Releasing him will open up $34 million in cap space, as $16.5 million is wiped off for this year, and $17.5 million, which was non-guaranteed, will be removed from what he would have made in 2025, the final year of his contract.

The Seahawks have also noted that they will not use a post-June 1 designation with Adams’ release, meaning they will save $6.1 million against the 2024 cap while taking the hit of his $20.83 million in dead money instantly.

Releasing Diggs will free up $11 million in cap space and absorb $10.26 million in dead money, while Dissly’s release clears up $7 million and adds $3.1 million more in dead money.

Despite these financial implications, Adams’ release was to be expected after three straight seasons shortened by injuries with zero sacks and a cumbersome price tag.

Adams’ four-year, $70 million extension made him the highest-paid safety in the NFL in 2021, and his debut season with the Seahawks went swimmingly achieving his third straight Pro Bowl and setting a record for defensive backs with 9.5 sacks.

Although, he hasn’t recorded a sack since then.

Diggs’ release, on the other hand, caught more Seahawks fans by surprise.

Diggs was acquired by the Seahawks in a trade with the Detroit Lions in 2019 and selected to three straight Pro Bowls with the Seahawks achieving 18 interceptions with the team. Last season, he posted a career-high 95 tackles. He was set to count for $21.3 million against the salary cap in the final year of his contract.

Dissly, Seattle’s fourth-round draft pick in 2018, accumulated 127 catches for 1,421 yards and 13 touchdowns in six seasons with the Seahawks. Like Adams, his release was foreseen since he was set to count for a $10.1 million lump sum of the salary cap in his final year of the deal having only caught 17 passes last season.

In addition to the recent release of legendary head coach Pete Carroll, the departure of these three players will give the Seahawks a new look for the 2024-25 season.

The NFL is reportedly considering disciplinary action against Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams after the star defender screamed at a doctor on the sideline while he was being evaluated for a concussion. Adams was making his first start after a season-ending injury in 2022 but had to exit the game early. He is now in concussion protocol.

Adams apologized on Twitter after the incident, thanking the doctor for assisting him despite his outburst.

“First and foremost, I want to apologize to the OG. You did everything right when you realized I was concussed, I apologize for any negative energy I brought your way,” Adams said. “Watching the replay, I am thankful for your patience knowing I wasn’t myself in that moment. You’re a real one and you serve a great purpose that benefits the NFL and so many players. Prioritizing player’s health is essential. Much respect to you!”

Though Adams apologized for his actions, the league could still punish him for berating medical personnel, who he also seemed to threaten to the point that he had to be held back on the sidelines. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the league was considering serving Adams with a fine, though opponents to this measure argue that Adams was not in a sound state of mind. Some have even pointed at the NFL’s own classification of concussions, which specifically cites uncharacteristic aggression and agitation as key symptoms.

Adams last played for the Seahawks in Week 1 of the 2022 season, when he suffered a torn quad tendon that required surgery to repair. In the first quarter of his return game Monday night, he seemed to sustain the concussion while attempting to tackle Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. Adams dove at Jones’ knees and hit him headfirst. He appeared disoriented after the play and was escorted off the field. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said that he expects Adams to recover and plans to continue using him as a key part of the team’s defense going forward.

During the Seattle Seahawks 24-3 over the New York Giants, safety Jamal Adams suffered a head injury.

Adams was playing for the first time since last season’s opener, where he tore his left quad tendon and was playing his first game in 385 days. He was injured on the ninth play of the game, where he stayed down on the field for the moment where he appeared wobbly. Adams later walked off the field to receive medical support.

Adams was later seen yelling at the doctor who evaluates head injuries and appeared to be held back by two Seahawks staff members.

Coach Pete Carroll said that Adams should be able to play the Seahawks’ Week 6 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.

“He got kicked in the head and so he misses this game, but the preparation to get him to this and then with the week coming off, he’s going to be fine, I’m sure, and then be back out there. So it’s just a little glitch right now,” Caroll stated.

Adams has been 28 out of 53 regular season games due to injury. He had two tackles and almost sacked Giants quarterback Daniel Jones before leaving the game.

Adams opened up about his injury to The News Tribune, describing it as “devastating” and admitted to thinking about retiring.

“It’s been hard, man. I love the game like no other. You know, when you lose something that you really, really love, it takes a toll on you. Obviously, mentally, I had to get over that, had to adjust. That was just life. … I had to talk to myself, mentally.” Adams said.

Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams’ season could be over.

Head coach Pete Carroll said following Monday Night’s thrilling win against the Denver Broncos that Adams suffered a “serious injury” to his quad.

The injury happened in the second quarter after Adams laid a hit on quarterback Russell Wilson

Although the 26-year-old got up immediately, he was seen limping in obvious pain that did not get any better throughout the night.

He was eventually carted off the field and was forced to miss the rest of the game.

Worse yet, it appears that he will miss the majority of the season – or perhaps the entirety of it.

That’s if he indeed suffered a torn quad, which appears to be the case, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapport.

Caroll told Seattle Sports radio that Adams will need surgery.

“I don’t know the extent of that yet but I know it’s serious and it just breaks your heart,” Carroll said.

Adams was initially acquired from the New York Jets in a massive package that included two first-round picks.

But the deal hasn’t worked out for the Seahawks thus far.

The two-time pro bowler with the Jets has missed nine games in the past two seasons.

In 2020, Adams suffered a torn labrum and had surgery in the offseason.

And in the following year, he sustained the same injury in week 13.

Additionally, Adams broke his middle finger during training camp this year.

In 2021, Adams signed a four-year extension worth $70 million with the Seahawks.

At the time, that made him the highest-paid safety.

But now the Seahawks will have to plan without Adams for potentially the rest of the year.

The team will face off against the division rival San Francisco 49ers next Sunday.

The Seattle Seahawks have made another contract offer to Pro Bowl Safety Jamal Adams. The team now awaits Adamas’ response on whether he will accept or decline the latest contract offer.

Adams is in line for an extension that would make him the league’s highest-paid safety, topping the $15.25 million-per-year average of the Denver Broncos’ Justin Simmons. Seattle and Adams’ agent began negotiating early in the offseason and continued to do so through the start of training camp until a recent period of inaction.

Left tackle Duane Brown is currently not on the Seahawks’ priority for a contract extension as the team isn’t interested in offering the 14-year veteran a new deal.

“Nothing new is happening with that at this point,” Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said when asked if an extension for Brown is under discussion or not.

Both Adams and Brown reported to training camp but have not participated in practice because of their unsettled contract situations. Both players remained spectators Tuesday for Seattle’s tenth practice.

Despite not practicing, Admas was engaging and in good spirits as he watched from the sideline. The Pro Bowler offered instructions to younger defensive backs and was engaged with his teammates and fans in attendance.

While Seattle is not interested in Brown, star quarterback Russell Wilson is. A source confirmed that Wilson told the team he is willing to move money around to clear cap room for extensions for both Adams and Brown.

On Sunday, Wilson called Brown’s absence “pretty significant” and added, “We’ve got to figure that out because we need Duane Brown.”

As discussions have continued to brew about New York Jets’ safety Jamal Adams and his trade request from the team, there have been numerous rumors of what team Adams could be traded to. Adams’ agent told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that there was a list of seven teams his client would be traded to, but there are some other team’s in the mix. Here is the breakdown of the seven potential landing spots for Adams and my opinion as to how likely this is:

Let me start off by saying that one of the reasons as to why the 24 year old wants a trade from the team, is because the two sides could not agree on a long-term contract. It has since come out that Adams would be willing to hold off on negotiating a contract extension if he were to be traded.

Baltimore Ravens: Last season the Ravens had one of the best defenses in football, but it was their run defense that stole the show. The Ravens’ pass defense was really good, sixth in the NFL in passing yards per game allowed. The Ravens ranked middle of the road however in interceptions as a team with 13. Three of the four spots on that Ravens’ secondary are already pretty much on lockdown with Marshon Latimore and Marcus Peters at corner and Earl Thomas at free safety. They could plug Adams in at strong safety and he would be a presence out there. Locking down on deep routes for some of those speedy defenders, while also being able to come down into the box and blitz, Adams could be plugged in anywhere for this team. The Ravens currently don’t have a lot of cap space for 2020, but have around $65 million in cap space in 2021, and have a slew of draft picks to give to the Jets. I would rate this trade destination a 4 out of 5 as given the win-now attitude of the Ravens, the fit makes sense and Adams can be the defensive anchor for the future the Ravens have not had since Ray Lewis.

Dallas Cowboys: It has seemed that the Cowboys are the preferred destination for Adams, being that he is from Texas, and there was interest from the Cowboys at the trade deadline last season. The Cowboys were tenth in passing yards per game allowed in 2019, but that is primarily credited to their front seven with guys like Jaylon Smith, Leighton Vander Esch and DeMarcus Lawrence, among others. The Dallas secondary was not great as they were tied for last in the NFL in interceptions with seven. The addition of Adams could be the last piece in what the Cowboys have been looking for in having success in the playoffs for the first time since the 90s. He would add to the young core that is already there in Dallas. The issue is, however, that money is tight for the Cowboys as Dak Prescott is expected to get a max-deal, Smith and Lawrence have signed big extensions along with La’el Collins, Ezekiel Elliott, Amari Cooper, Zach Martin and Tyron Smith, so the odds of there being an extension for Adams. The fit would be great, but given the lack of money, I give this trade a 3 out of 5, even if Adams holds off on asking for an extension.

Kansas City Chiefs: Similar to Dallas, the Chiefs have very little cap space to begin with and they are expected to sign a massive extension with their franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes, somewhere in the ballpark of $200 million. Kansas City would also have to probably part ways with Tyrann Mathieu so that they could plug Adams in at safety. It would be a dream scenario for the Chiefs to create a mini dynasty, but it is really unlikely to happen so I give this trade a 2 out of 5.

San Francisco 49ers: The team with the best defense in all of football in 2019 could get even better with the addition of Adams. Jaquiski Tartt is entering the final year of his contract so Adams could plug right in there on a long-term deal. 49ers general manager John Lynch knows the importance of having a quality safety given his success in the league as a player. The question is will Lynch opt to pay Adams, or some of the anchors on the defensive line that they have in Arik Armstead, Dee Ford, and Nick Bosa. I am really not 100% on how good the fit would be, so I would give this a 2.5 out of 5.

Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks had one of the worst pass defenses in all of football last season, so the addition of Adams would be very welcome. The Seahawks could pair Adams with Quandree Diggs, which would allow them to stop some of the top tier offenses they play. The Seahawks will also have a lot of cap space next offseason, and have made big time trades in the past. I would not be surprised if head coach Pete Carroll and the team would want to get back to having the best defense in the NFL as they did with the Legion of Boom. Adams could be an anchor on that defense for the next five or more years on this team. I would give this trade a 3 out of 5.

Houston Texans: Given the recent history of the Texans to make blockbuster deals, they are a definite possibility for Adams. Head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien needs a successful move to pan out for his sake as well to keep quarterback Deshaun Watson happy. The Texans had the fourth worst pass defense in the entire NFL in 2019. A variety of injuries have hurt this team in the past and given how they blew a big lead to the Chiefs in the playoffs, they need an anchor in their secondary to slow down opposing offenses. I feel that the Jets could get immense value for Adams from the Texans, especially given how poorly the Texans handled the DeAndre Hopkins trade. The Texans are however tight on cap space with Watson expected to get a massive deal. This is my least favorite trade destination for Adams of the ones he listed, I give this a 1 out of 5.

Philadelphia Eagles: Finally we have the Eagles, who have the most cap space for 2020 out of any of these seven teams. They traded for Darius Slay in the offseason to help bolster what was a secondary of much criticism in 2019. Trading for Adams would make this team a Super Bowl contender for years to come, and allow them to slow down a team like the Cowboys in their own division with their offensive firepower. The Eagles already have a strong pass rush with Fletcher Cox, Derek Barnett and Brandon Graham, among others, so the addition of Adams, who as mentioned can play in multiple positions on the defensive side of the ball, would allow for a variety of different looks the Eagles could throw at teams. Getting a veteran safety is always hard to do on the open-market, so a trade for Adams could allow the Eagles to reign over the division for years to come and have a cornerstone of their defense for well into the decade of the 2020s. I give this trade a 4 out of 5.

So no perfect destinations for Adams, but as the offseason progresses, things could change. Who knows what the Jets will be able to get for their star and what they want for him. That will dictate where he goes as if the Jets are asking for an astronomical amount, that could take some teams out of the market. Should make for an interesting buildup to the 2020 season.

The New York Jets and their star young safety Jamal Adams have been at odds for a while now as the two have been unable to agree upon a contract extension. Due to this, Adams has requested a trade from the team that drafted him.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Adams has a list of seven teams that he wants to be traded to. Those teams are the Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks and Houston Texans. Six of those teams, with the exception of the Cowboys, made the playoffs in 2019 but it will not be easy for a trade to those teams, especially if Adams wants an extension.

For the 2020 season, the Chiefs and Cowboys have less than $12 million in cap space, and have to pay their franchise quarterbacks. The Ravens and Seahawks also have less the $15 million in cap space, while the 49ers have just over $15 million. The Texans have $20 million which is a possible spot. But the team that is most likely to trade and sign an extension with Adams would be the Eagles, who have over $24 million in cap space for this upcoming season, fourth most in the NFL, and have already locked up their franchise cornerstones to long-term contracts.

Adams does have two more years on his rookie contract and can be franchise tagged at least once, so if he gets traded to one of the teams on his list, it is possible that he waits to sign an extension for at least one year.

Numerous members of Adams’ 2017 draft class have received massive contract extensions including Christian McCaffery with Carolina and Partick Mahomes in line for one with Kansas City.

Adams is seeking to be the highest-paid safety in the entire NFL, which would mean a salary of more than $14.6 million, which is the current high mark. Of all the guys that deserve to be the highest paid safety in football, Adams is on the short list. In three season, Adams has been named to two Pro Bowls, has a total of 273 tackles, 12 sacks, two interceptions and six forced fumbles.

The 2019 Pro Bowl was actually attention-grabbing this year. Normally, the event isn’t circled on any calendars. I have a tough time imagining someone tuning in to see the game, nevermind taking the trek to Hawaii and paying for the tickets. However, that might change after this year.

Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan arrived for the game still fuming over the referees’ missed call in the NFC championship game. His shirt read, “Blow whistles not games” on one side and “Make calls not apologies” on the other.

That bold statement by Jordan is not to say the game itself was boring. Dee Ford, who cost his team a Super Bowl appearance this year because he lined up offsides, did it again at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. But this time, he backed up before the ball was snapped.

Don’t think anyone got upset this time at Ford. By the fourth quarter, Alvin Kamara, the New Orleans Saints running back, was playing defense. Kamara almost had a strip sack on Deshaun Watson before he realized at the last second it was the Pro Bowl and no one tries that hard. He then celebrated with Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who was also playing defense.

Barkley wasn’t the only NFC East running back that lined up on the other side of the ball. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett threw Ezekiel Elliot out onto the field during the third quarter. The fans and Garrett seemed to love it.

And if that wasn’t enough of the Pro Bowl, there was still the trophy presentation. That, as is typical Pro Bowl fashion, fell flat on its face. Jason Witten accidentally broke the trophy as he presented it. The thing just separated as if it was held together with Elmer’s Glue. Even the NFL doesn’t really care about the Pro Bowl. Also, take a look at Jets safety Jamal Adams when the trophy breaks.

Adams also won Pro Bowl MVP. It was the first time in the Super Bowl era a safety won the award. That’s not to say it matters, it’s still the equivalent of being the kid who plays all out in PE class, but congrats to him.

After the game, the 2017 quarterback draft class came together and reminisced. Scouts called it a historically weak year but just two seasons later, three quarterbacks from the class made it to the Pro Bowl. Patrick Mahomes and Mitch Trubisky joined Watson after the game for a picture.

Also, the AFC beat the NFC 26-7. Here’s to hoping for another potentially exciting Pro Bowl in 2020.

PHILADELPHIA, PA - APRIL 27: (L-R) Mitchell Trubisky of North Carolina poses with Commissioner of the National Football League Roger Goodell after being picked #2 overall by the Chicago Bears (from 49ers) during the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on April 27, 2017 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The first round of the 2017 NFL Draft was held Thursday night in Philadelphia, and it featured both highly-expected picks and surprise moves and selections.

NFL Draft Round 1 Recap

The Cleveland Browns took Myles Garrett with the No. 1 overall pick, as expected. Most draft analysts seem to believe the long-armed, physically powerful Texas A&M defensive end will significantly help the Browns, who went 1-15 last season.

Among the biggest surprises were the Chicago Bears’ decision to move up one spot in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers to take North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky with the second overall pick. This seems particularly strange considering the Bears signed Mike Glennon to a three-year, $45 million contract earlier this offseason to make him the presumed starter.

Trubisky only has one year of experience as a starter, but amazed by completing 68 percent of his passes last season. The young QB stated he “did not have a lot of discussions” with the Bears during the pre-draft process, and added it was the team’s general manager Ryan Pace who revealed to him in a phone call that Glennon would get the starting role.

“I’m going to go into a great situation, where Mike is the starter,” Trubisky told reporters Thursday night. “So I look forward to learning from him and the other veterans on the team. I just have to come in, prove myself, learn the offense as quick as possible and help the Chicago Bears win.”

The 49ers ended up with the No. 3 overall pick as part of the trade with the Bears, selecting Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas. San Francisco also receives third and fourth-round selections this year and a 2018 third-round pick.

The New York Jets took LSU safety Jamal Adams with the No. 6 overall pick, a selection USA TODAY’s “For the Win” writer Steven Ruiz highly approves of. Ruiz calls Adams a “game-changer in the secondary” and praised the defenseman for his versatility. “He’s a thumper in the run game, he can cover tight ends and he can even play the centerfield role in the deep middle,” says Ruiz.

New York’s other team did not manage to get a top-10 pick in Round 1. The Giants selected Mississippi tight end Evan Engram with the 23rd pick. Ruiz said that although Engram could help Big Blue improve their passing game, he also believes the tight end is not the best pick for the Giants for two reasons: “He’s not much of a run blocker,” and he’s not as good a tight end prospect as Miami’s David Njoku, whom the Browns took as the No. 29 pick.

Ruiz said he believes the Browns “nailed all three of their picks” in the first round: Garrett, Njoku and Michigan safety Jabrill Peppers, whom Cleveland got in a trade for a pick-spot with the Houston Texans.

The Texans selected Deshaun Watson, quarterback of the national championship-winning Clemson Tigers, with the 12th overall pick in that trade with Cleveland via the Philadelphia Eagles. Ruiz said that although he sees Watson has talent, he has a lot of work to do in order to truly make a difference on Houston’s offense. “The Clemson star needs to hit the deep ball more consistently and do a better job of reading defenses,” says Ruiz.

Rounding out the top-ten picks are LSU running back Leonard Fournette, who went to the Jacksonville Jaguars as No. 4, Western Michigan wide receiver Corey Davis (No. 5) who went to the Tennessee Titans, Clemson receiver Mike Williams (No. 7) who went to the Los Angeles Chargers, Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey (No. 8) who went to the Carolina Panthers, Washington wideout John Ross (No. 9), who went to the Cincinnati Bengals, and Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes, (No. 10), who went to the Kansas City Chiefs in a trade with the Buffalo Bills.
