Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is saying goodbye to pro football.

The 32-year-old four-time Pro Bowler announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday, signing a one-day contract to retire with the team that drafted him out of Texas as a third-round pick in 2008.

After nine seasons in Kansas City, Charles joined the Denver Broncos in 2017 and then played for the Jacksonville Jaguars the following season.

The Chiefs shared a video Thursday of Charles getting his final handoff from quarterback Patrick Mahomes to celebrate the pass rusher’s retirement:

Kansas City also shared a video tribute to Charles, who was shown via highlights with teammates and head coach Andy Reid.

[There are] so many people in this building that played a part in my success on the field,” Charles says in the video. “I wanted to come back and show my love to those people that showed love to me. I think it was only right to do it here.”

Charles not only set a franchise record with 7,260 rushing yards but also maintains the all-time league record for yards-per-carry for his position: 5.4. Should he have sustained fewer injuries, Charles’ stats might have been even more insane.

Charles also led the NFL in rushing touchdowns in 2013. It would surely come as no surprise to many if the rusher was inducted into the Hall of Fame — or received some other type of major honor — in a few years.

Here are some of the top moments from Charles’ career:

The Washington Redskins are seeking to strengthen their rushing game this season, and thus met with several top running backs in free agency this week including veteran Adrian Peterson.

Redskins Meet With Free Agent Adrian Peterson

Peterson, 33, visited the team on Monday. The seven-time Pro Bowler — a three-time NFL rushing yards leader who was also the Offensive Player of the Year in 2012 and a league MVP — was released by the Arizona Cardinals in March. Peterson spent his first 10 NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, who drafted him as the seventh overall pick out of Oklahoma in 2007. Peterson suffered a neck injury late last season.

“I fly in tonight. I’m down for working out or whatever I have to do to make the team,” Peterson told ESPN.

On Sunday, Washington hosted running back Jamaal Charles, who played with the Denver Broncos last year after spending his first nine seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Redskins also met with former New York Giant Orleans Darkwawho worked out with Washington.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden told ESPN that his squad isn’t seeking a starting running back, as Rob Kelley is set to keep that position.

“We want to get physicals on them just in case,” Gruden said of Peterson, Charles and Darkwa. “We’ve had very unlucky situations with our running backs. If something else happens, we’ll be really, really, really thin. We want to make sure we’re covering all our bases right now, and we’ll address it when we feel like we have to.”

Gruden is right about Washington’s running backs situation. The team lost rookie Derrius Guice — a second-round pick out of LSU — to a season-ending knee injury in its first preseason game, and a pair of backups — Byron Marshall and Samaje Perine — recently injured their ankles.

Charles, 31, was the NFL’s rushing touchdowns leader in 2013 and is a four-time Pro-Bowler. He also averages a league record 5.4 yards per carry. He has logged 44 rushing touchdowns and 20 receiving scores in his career.

Darkwa, 26, has played the last four seasons with the Giants. He led New York with 751 rushing yards in 2017, 154 of which came in the team’s regular-season finale, a victory over the Redskins. Darkwa — who is now completely healthy after undergoing leg surgery in May — has scored nine rushing touchdowns in his four-year pro career. Thus, it seems like he would be the weakest asset for Washington, while Peterson — one of the top NFL pass rushers of his generation —  would likely be the strongest.

Max Kellerman of ESPN’s First Take said Monday he was convinced Peterson would not be able to deliver a productive seasons for the Redskins should the team choose him. Kellerman cited the running back’s old age as one of his main reasons.

“Is [Peterson] going to give you production or replacement value? I don’t even know if he is replacement value at this point. Why not go with a young running back you may have around for four or five years?” said Kellerman. “Develop something. Why give those carries to a guy who can’t get average yards per carry?” he added of Peterson.

Jamaal Charles has spoken out after signing a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos on Tuesday about getting cut by the Kansas City Chiefs, and the running back says the move was both “business” and “personal.”

“Really, it’s behind me,” the running back said. “I really don’t even talk about it. I love the organization, love the team. At the end of the day it’s a business, but it’s kind of personal as well. It is what it is.”

Charles inked a $3.75 million contract with the Broncos on Tuesday, a deal that includes a $900,000 base salary, according to Mike Klis of 9news.com.

The Chiefs saved around $6 million in salary-cap space by releasing the 30-year-old rusher, who has played in Kansas City since being drafted as a third-round pick out of Texas in 2008. Charles says he is a big fan of John Elway and has long wanted to play for his team.

“I always wanted to play with Denver,” Charles said via the team’s official site. “Growing up, John Elway was my favorite player. I just like the environment, the team and the organization. I wanted to be a part of it. I still feel like I can still play ball. I can keep up with the young people.”

Apparently, the Broncos general manager is just as happy that Charles is joining his team:

Charles suffered a right ACL tear in 2015 and was sidelined for the rest of that season after just 12 carries in three games. Nevertheless, he still boasts the highest yards-per-carry average in NFL history.

Now, Charles says his next big objective is to win a Super Bowl. He recently posted a video displaying his agility work in hopes of easing concerns about his physical health.

“It’s not about money,” Charles said. “It’s not what you see, it’s what you don’t see. A lot of people see me [being done]. I see me going out there, helping the team win and helping the team get to the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl. That’s what I see. I see things that are just in my fate.”

Charles will seek to help improve Denver’s backfield alongside fellow running backs C.J. Anderson and Devontae Booker.

Eric Berry is now the highest-paid safety in the NFL.

Chiefs Sign Safety Eric Berry to record six-year deal

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the Pro Bowler has agreed to a new deal with the Kansas City Chiefs worth $78 million over six years.

The lucrative contract, which includes $40 million guaranteed and a $20 million signing bonus, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, makes Berry the top-paid safety in the league ahead of Arizona’s Tyrann Mathieu and Minnesota’s Harrison Smith.

The deal seems well-deserved. The Chiefs failed to reach a long-term agreement with Berry last July after the sides were “miles apart” in contract negotiations.

Thus, the 28-year-old was forced to play under the franchise tag, something Berry, a seven-year veteran, had no intention of repeating in 2017.

“I want to end my career in Kansas City,” Berry said earlier this month. “I want to play there. I love the city, I love the vibe, I love my teammates. I really look at them more than teammates. We’ve been through a lot and they supported me a lot. And the organization. But I don’t feel comfortable playing under the franchise tag this year.”

As recently as Sunday, Berry told The Kansas City Star he was “going to keep being patient” for a new deal, an approach that evidently worked for the Chiefs.

Bery was fantastic last season, earning All-Pro honors and finishing the year as the NFL’s eighth-ranked safety, per Pro Football Focus.

His incredible play over 16 starts only added to his big return from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which ended his 2014 season early before he bounced back to win Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2015.

The Chiefs are also reportedly set to release running back Jamaal Charles on Tuesday.

In other NFL news, the Vikings released running back Adrian Peterson on Tuesday, while the Washington Redskins placed a franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins.
