Deshaun Watson made a name for himself by winning a national championship as a college football player, and now he has made headlines just one month into his professional career.

The Houston Texans rookie quarterback — a former Clemson star — donated his first game check to three women who work in the NRG Stadium cafeteria and who were particularly affected by the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey.

“For what you all do for us every day and never complain, I really appreciate you all, so I wanted to give my first game check to y’all to help y’all out in some type of way,” Watson told the woman in a video shared by the Texans. “Here you guys go.”

The women couldn’t help but cry and hug the 22-year-old quarterback.

“Anything else y’all need, I’m always here to help,” Watson added.

Watson, who has a base salary of $465,000, donated a check for $27,353.

Watson — the 12th overall pick in this year’s draft — helped lead Clemson to a national championship appearance in 2015 and victory over Alabama in 2016.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney praised Watson for his maturity and dedication. Swinney event went as far as to say before the 2017 draft that any teams that passed on him would feel the same regret NBA teams experienced after passing on Michael Jordan. 

It’s not much of a surprise Watson has become involved in charity, as he is surely paying forward a good deed a former NFL star did for him. Years prior, former Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn partnered with Habitat for Humanity to secure Watson a home.

Watson’s charitable deed follows that of another Texans player: Pro-Bowl defensive end J.J. Watt, who helped raise over $14 million via an online campaign for victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Watson made his first career start on September 14, his 22nd birthday, against the Cincinnati Bengals. He finished with 125 passing yards, 67 rushing yards and a 49-yard rushing touchdown as the Texans won 13–9. During Week 3 against the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, Watson finished with 301 passing yards, 41 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions as the Texans lost 36–33.

The Texans (1-2) next host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

J.J. Watt has managed to rally scores of people behind him to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Houston.

The Texans defensive end began an online fundraiser for the disaster victims on Sunday, and started with a modest goal of $200,000.

By Friday morning, total donations had surpassed $14 million, according to a tweet from 28-year-old Watt, a four-time Pro Bowler and three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Total donations had reached $10 million on Thursday night.

Harvey has led over 30,000 people to seek emergency shelter and left dozens dead or injured.

“I’m not going to be perfect at this, I can promise you, because it’s happening on the fly and I’ve never done anything like this,” Watt said Wednesday. “But I’m doing everything I can, and we’re going to make it as good as we possibly can.”

Watt is one of several celebrities to have donated to a relief fund for those affected by the hurricane.

Canadian rapper and music producer Drake was among the latest to donate to the YouCaring campaign, a crowdfunding charity site that Watt chose to amass the donations. Drake committed $200,000 to the cause.

According to YouCaring.com, more than 139,000 donors have pledged funds.

The owners of the Texans and Baltimore Ravens each pledged $1 million to the United Way of Greater Houston’s flood relief fund; the NFL Foundation matched the Texans’ offer. The owners of the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, New England Patriots and New York Jets each announced $1 million donations to the American Red Cross.

The Texans’ preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys at NRG Stadium on Thursday was cancelled in order to allow players to be with their families.

Robert Kraft and the New England Patriots have pledged to donate up to $1 million to the American Red Cross in support of the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Fund.

Hurricane Harvey began over the weekend in the Houston, Texas area, and has left around 30,000 people seeking emergency shelter. The unprecedented flooding of two or more feet of water has already claimed up to ten lives and injured dozens more while leaving thousands homeless in the country’s fourth largest city.

“Houston is a special city to our family and our organization,” said Kraft. “The New England Patriots and our fans have celebrated two of our franchise’s greatest and most memorable moments in Houston. The city was a tremendous host for Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004 and once again this past February for Super Bowl LI. Houston could not have provided more support to us during those visits, and we welcome the opportunity to provide this support when Houston needs it most. When natural disasters have impacted our country, they have always unified communities and rallied support throughout the nation. We have already heard stories of heroic rescues and strangers helping strangers in this time of need. These stories have inspired us, as we always encourage bringing communities together, building bridges and helping others. We are eager to join in these efforts and provide our support.”

According to a Patriots press release from Tuesday, donations will be accepted by the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org/thekraftgroup. 

Besides Kraft, another NFL team owner has promised to donate to the relief fund for the natural disaster: Houston Texans Chairman and CEO Bob McNair, who said he would donate to the United Way of Greater Houston’s flood relief fund.

“These dollars will be put to go use in the relief and recovery efforts,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said Monday, according to NFL.com. “We also hope our actions will encourage others to do whatever they can to help their neighbors in need right now.”

O’Brien then dedicated the season to the city and people of Houston.

“You know football, obviously, is important, but I think the most important thing right now is doing everything we can for our city. I can tell you right now, we’re going to dedicate this season to the city of Houston, to the people of Houston,” he said. “There are no guarantees in football — that’s not what I’m here to say. But I will guarantee this team will go out every Sunday, Monday, Thursday — whenever they ask us to play — and we’ll play our asses off for the city of Houston, I promise you that.”

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Charlotte Jones Anderson announced that the NFL Foundation will match Mcnair’s donation. The Texans’ Pro Bowl defensive end J.J. Watt alone helped raise nearly $775,000 as of 7 p.m. EST on Monday.

The Cowboys and Texans were scheduled to play at Houston’s NRG Stadium for a preseason game on Thursday, although that matchup has now been moved to Arlington due to public safety concerns. The BYU vs. LSU football game that was set to be held at NRG Stadium on Sept. 2 has also been moved to New Orleans’ Superdome for similar reasons.

According to CBS News, the National Weather Service does not expect flooding to peak until Wednesday or Thursday.

“We are not out of the woods yet,” Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Elaine Duke said Monday morning. “Harvey is still a dangerous and historic storm.”
