Houston Astros reliever Ken Giles gave up a big home run to the New York Yankees at home on Tuesday night, and he clearly showed how angry about this he was.

Ken Giles Punches Himself In Astros’ Loss

Gary Sanchez smacked a three-run homer over the center-field wall at Minute Maid Park in the ninth inning to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead. New York won the game 4-0. As the visitors celebrated their major hit, Giles instead kept his head down and then punched himself hard across the face while furiously heading to the dugout. Giles, 27, then proceeded to throw a tantrum by picking up a bat and throwing it down onto the ground and kicking an object in the dugout.

Unsurprisingly, dozens of GIFS of Giles’ actions began surfacing on social media.

Giles also allowed the Yankees’ fourth run and was pulled shortly after that. He took responsibility for the Astros’ loss, and noted how the defending national champions could have won the game had he played better. Giles has only given up two runs in his first 11 appearances this year.

“I screwed up a win,” Giles told MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart after Tuesday’s game. “We should have won this game. We should have bounced back. I didn’t give our team a chance. Of course I’m going to be frustrated with that. This team deserves the best out of everybody and they need me to be the best I can be. They deserve that and that’s what I’m going to give them from here on out.”

The Yankees (19-10, second in AL East) and Astros (20-11, first in AL West) will face off again on Wednesday at 8:10pm EST, the third game of a four-game series in Houston.

Max Scherzer smacked his first career home run on Tuesday night in the second inning of the Washington Nationals’ 7-6 road loss to the Miami Marlins, but left shortly afterwards with neck spasms.

Max Scherzer Home Run Nationals Marlins

The NL All-Star right-hander smacked a three-run homer to left-center field off Marlins rookie left-hander Chris O’Grady. Scherzer initially squared around to bunt but ultimately decided to blast a 381-foot shot on O’Grady’s 0-2 pitch to put the Nationals up 4-0 in the top of the second. The Nationals starter left minutes afterwards after wincing in the dugout.

“You know it had to be something for him to come out of a game up six runs,” manager Dusty Baker said. “We’re just glad it wasn’t his arm.”

Surprisingly, Scherzer credited his neck injury — which was due to stiffness from sleeping uncomfortably the night before — for the homer.

“It actually helped on my baseball swing. I couldn’t pull my head out, I had to just stay locked in, and that actually gave me a better swing,” Scherzer told reporters. “So sure enough, that’s the reason why I hit a home run.”

The two-time Cy Young Award winner added he wasn’t worried about the spasms because he claims this is something that usually just happens when one sleeps in an awkward position. Scherzer said he received treatment for the spasms, although he still felt stiffness when he turned his head to the left as he stepped up to bat on Tuesday.

“Sometimes you wake up in the morning and you have a crick in your neck,” said Scherzer. “That’s what it is. Like I said, I’ve had this in the past. You just have to take your pills, take your drugs, take your anti-inflammatories, get some rest and just get treatment. This will come and go.”

Scherzer also threw a scoreless ten-pitch first inning on Tuesday. He has never missed a start since becoming a full-time starting pitcher. Scherzer, 33, began his MLB career with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2008 and has been playing for Washington since 2015.

The Nationals (63-42) are already missing righty Stephen Strasburg, who is on the disabled list with a right elbow injury.

Triple-A right-hander A.J. Cole will start for the Nats in their series finale against the Marlins in Miami on Wednesday at 7:10 pm EST. In his first and only start in the majors this season, Cole (1-0, 1.50 ERA) threw six innings of 1-run ball against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Marlins will counter with righty Vance Worley (0-2, 6.42 ERA), who will be making his first start in more than one month. Worley lasted four innings against the Reds on Friday, three of which were scoreless.

The Nats won the series opener against the Marlins 1-0 on Monday. Washington is 13 games ahead of second-place Miami (50-55) for the National League East lead.

Tim Tebow’s minor-league baseball career began on a strong note on Thursday, as the former NFL quarterback hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat with the Class A Columbia Fireflies in South Carolina.

Tim Tebow Homers In First Minor League At-Bat

The former (2007) Heisman Trophy winner smacked a 2-1 pitch from Augusta GreenJackets lefty Domenic Mazza off and over the fence in left-center field for the home run, which caused the crowd at Spirit Communications Park to go wild with excitement.

Gabe Lacques of USATODAY sports shared the moment:

The hit came in the bottom of the second inning of Tebow’s debut with the New York Mets’ low-A affiliate, and came after a spring training performance during which he struggled in exhibition games against major league clubs, recording just four hits in 27 at-bats (a .148 average).

Tebow initially stopped for a moment at second base because he believed he had hit a ground-rule double: the ball bounced back onto the field.  However, an umpire motioned that it was actually a home run. The 29-year-old joyfully hopped, clapped his hands and pumped his arms before running around all the bases.

The former New York Jets quarterback seemed to be in complete disbelief about his big hit.

“I thought I had a double, and the guy goes, ‘Keep going,'” Tebow said. “I was, ‘All right, I’ll take it.’ It felt good, though.”

“All of my sports experiences helped me for moments like that,” Tebow said after the Fireflies’ 14-7 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets. “Playing in The Swamp or Death Valley or in Mile High Stadium in the playoffs, they all helped.

“So much about sports is handling moments and handling pressure.”

Tebow first announced that he would be pursuing a baseball career back in August after his NFL career stalled. He was assigned to the fireflies at the end of spring training.

The former NFL star said, unsurprisingly, that he never imagined his first at-bat would result in a home run.

“The big games in football have helped me for that moment, being my first at-bat in a real pro baseball game,” Tebow said. “But I tried to make the most of it.”

Yu Darvish #11 of the Texas Rangers

In one of the most incredible moments this season, Yu Darvish did something Wednesday night that no other Japanese-born pitcher had ever done while wearing the uniform of an American League team.

Rangers’ Yu Darvish Hits First Career Homer In 6-5 Road Win Over Reds

The Rangers right-hander smacked his very first career home run in the fifth inning of his team’s game against the Cincinnati Reds to help lead Texas to a 6-5 victory over the Reds at Great American Ball Park. It was only Darvish’s second plate appearance of the game, and only the 14th of the 30-year-old’s MLB career. The exit velocity of Darvish’s big homer was 107 mph, according to Statcast™, and the estimated distance was 410 feet.

Darvish’s blast marked the first homer hit by a Rangers pitcher since since Bobby Witt on June 30, 1997, against the Dodgers. Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre also had a big night, having recorded his 2,900th Major League hit.

“That was a great one to win,” Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. “We needed a feel-good win going home. I’m not saying it was the greatest played game, but an incredible effort by all our guys.”

The Rangers snapped a three-game losing streak and now hold a 6 1/2 game lead in the American League West with 35 games to play. With the loss, the Reds finished 6-4 on their 10-game home-stand.

Ian Desmond began the rally for the Rangers when he was struck by a pitch from right-handed reliever Blake Wood, and he stole second. Carlos Beltran flied out to center, but Beltre snapped an 0-for-10 skid with a double to right-center.

Despite his big, historic hit, Darvish struggled during his six innings of pitching. He allowed five runs and was unable to hold leads of 3-0 or 5-2. The Japanese pitcher left with the game tied at 5 after six innings, having walked five batters.

Reds starter Tim Adleman didn’t walk anybody, but gave up three home runs — to Nomar Mazara, as well as Darvish and Desmond, who went back-to-back in the fifth inning. Overall, Adleman gave up five runs (four earned) with five hits over five innings.

“It’s a couple of runs I could have kept off the board,” Adleman said. “If I do, we probably win the game 5-4 or 5-3. It’s frustrating to know that you put your team in a tough spot. If you just make a couple of more pitches, maybe the results are completely different.”

Down two in the sixth, the Reds’ Scott Schebler grounded a one-out pitch to Rougned Odor, who was playing in shallow right field on the shift. Schebler ran hard out of the box and beat Odor’s throw by a step. He would score on a Ramon Cabrera ground-rule double, which was part of a two-run rally that tied the game.

Mazara hit a three-run homer in the second after the Reds failed to turn a double play. With Odor on first, Jonathan Lucroy hit a hard grounder that first baseman Joey Votto caught on his knees going to his right. Votto attempted to throw to second, but his toss fell way off the mark, thus allowing Odor to slide in safely. Lucroy also reached safely. Mazara followed with a homer, his 15th of the season.

“It’s a defensive mistake,” Reds manager Bryan Price said of Votto’s error. “It’s not his first, it won’t be his last. If he plays long enough, everyone’s going to have those moments where you make a mistake. And it happens and it happens frequently, unfortunately, in this game.”

“It was good to see Mazara’s power show up tonight,” Banister said. “This ballpark, you’re going to give up some home runs.”

The Rangers (74-53, 1st in AL West) next return to Arlington to open a four-game series against the Indians on Thursday night. Left-hander Cole Hamels will be looking for his first career victory against the Indians.

The Reds (54-72, 5th in NL Central) have an off-day on Thursday before beginning a three-game road series against the Diamondbacks on Friday. Lefty Brandon Finnegan takes the mound, coming off a seven-inning shutout performance against the Dodgers in which he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

The Texas Rangers have been missing starting right fielder Shin-Soo Choo for most of the season because of a hamstring injury, but this hasn’t caused much of a problem for them thus far. The main reason: rookie Nomar Mazara has proven to be nothing short of fantastic in his place.

Rangers Rookie Nomar Mazara Hits 491-Foot HR, Longest In MLB This Season

Mazara is hitting .322 with eight home runs in his first 163 career plate appearances. Now, he has another feat to boast about.

In the Rangers’ 15-9 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas on Wednesday, the 21-year-old Dominican blasted a 491-foot home run to the upper deck in right field, as it left the bat at 108 mph.

The homer, which came in the bottom of the second off Angels starter Hector Santiago as the Rangers trailed 4-1, is now the longest in the MLB this season. It was 16 feet longer than Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton’s on May 6, which was previously the longest this season.

“It’s cool to hear that. I hope more is to come,” Mazara said. “I put a good swing on it,” the rookie also later added.

It was also the third-longest in the Statcast era.

Mazara hit his first career home run at Globe Life Park just one day earlier, in the Rangers’ 4-1 win over the Angels on Tuesday– his 38th game. His record homer on Wednesday was his second.

“It was a majestic home run, I’m happy for the kid,” Rangers manager Jeff Banister said.

Mazara now leads the Rangers with eight homers, and trails only Minnesota Twins designated hitter Byung Ho Park (nine) for the most by an American League rookie.

If he continues hitting baseballs like that, Mazara could surely soon become a strong candidate to win AL Rookie of the Year.

Ex-MLB Player Brandon Laird Wins Free Beer For A Year

Laird– who had brief stints with the New York Yankees in 2011 and the Houston Astros in 2012 and 2013- now plays for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters of the Japanese League.

On Tuesday, his home run off a Kirin Beer sign earned him a year’s supply of beer and $10,000, according to a report in the Japan Times. Laird led Nippon with 34 home runs last season.

“I think it’s pretty cool when they tell you if you hit the signs you get a prize like that,” Laird told the Japan Times. “To actually do it in a game was pretty cool.”

He also said he plans to put the prize money to his home in Arizona, although he’s offering the beer out to others to drink.

“Definitely not drink it,” Laird, 28, said when asked what he’d do with his thirst-quenching prize. “Maybe give some to the batting practice pitchers or whoever wants it.”

The third baseman is a native of Orange County, Calif., and hit six home runs during three separate MLB stints with the Astros and Yankees. The Ham Fighters defeated the Orix Buffaloes 4-0 on Tuesday.

Mets Pitcher Bartolo Colon Hits First Home Run in 6-3 Win Over Padres

Bartolo Colon is a 42-year-old New York Mets pitcher who has long been beloved by his team despite never scored a home run in a game before.

Mets Pitcher Bartolo Colon Hits First Career Home Run In 6-3 Win Over Padres

However, he stunned and ultimately delighted fans on Saturday after he hit his first career home run against the San Diego Padres. He knocked the ball toward deep left field and out of San Diego’s Petco Park for a two-run shot to extend the Mets’ lead over the Padres, 4-0 in the top of the second inning. His fellow teammates in the Mets dugout went insane.

Colon labeled the moment the biggest of his career.

“The three years that I’ve been here, I was chasing one. Even back in my Montreal days,” Colon said through an interpreter. “But I wasn’t expecting something like this to happen. … My heart was beating a lot. And today’s a day I’m never going to forget.”

Colon’s historic first home run will now be immortalized not only in the hearts of thousands of fans, but also in the form of a trading card.

Colon, a Dominican right-hander known as “Big Sexy” by his teammates and the media, made his major league debut in 1997 with the Cleveland Indians. His first full season, however, came the following year, when he made his first All-Star game. He won the American League Cy Young Award with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005. After four seasons filled with arm problems and injuries, many fans thought he was done with baseball for good after he missed all of 2010. Instead, he returned and recorded his best season since his Cy Young campaign.

He then had two strong seasons with the Oakland Athletics from 2012-2013, and moved on to the Mets in 2014. Entering the 2016 MLB season, he officially became the oldest active player in the League (following the retirement of Maicer Izturis). He has spent every year of his career in the American League, except for a few months with the Montreal Expos in 2002.

It’s more than just Colon’s home run, however. He also pitched the longest at-bat of record, going 20 deep against Ricky Gutierrez in the eighth inning of a ballgame back in June 1998.

The Mets ended up winning the game 6-3 on Saturday. With this feat, the seasoned Dominican Mets pitcher has certainly earned his way into MLB history as a living legend.
