Portugal Loses Ronaldo, but Beats France 1-0 in Euro 2016 Final

Cristiano Ronaldo has made his way even further into the history books thanks to a fantastic opening World Cup performance on Friday. Ronaldo recorded a hat trick, accounting for all 3 of Portugal’s goals in a 3-3 draw against Spain.

As remarkable as it is on its own, this particular hat trick holds some historical weight, as Ronaldo’s 82nd, 83rd, and 84th international goals tied him for the most goals ever scored by a European player in international play. His mark puts him even with Ferenc Puskas, who played for the Hungarian national team from 1945 to 1956. Puskas is also the namesake of FIFA’s Goal of the Year Award. At 33-years-old, Ronaldo also became the oldest player to ever record a hat trick in the World Cup.

Ronaldo now needs another 25 goals in order to tie Ali Daei’s record for most international goals all time by a player from anywhere in the world, as his 109 goals scored for Iran from 1993-2006 makes for the highest mark in history. And just an extra little fun fact: Ronaldo is now the fourth player in history to score a goal in 4 different World Cups, joining the likes of Pele, Uwe Seeler and Miroslav Klose.

Friday’s hat trick was the 51st of Ronaldo’s career in both international and club play, but it was the only one which didn’t result in his team’s victory. Ronaldo was not disparaged by the result, though, as he indicated that there is plenty more soccer (or football, in this case) to be played. He said, “It was a good result. We sacrificed a lot but we believed in ourselves right to the end. This is just the first match. It was a very difficult game.”

We’ll see how Ronaldo follows up this performance when Portugal takes on Morocco on Wednesday, June 20 at 8:00 am EST.

Forsberg had a hat trick in the Predators’ previous game, Tuesday’s 6-5 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames. The 22-year-old Swede is the first NHL player to score three goals in consecutive games since Vancouver Canucks forward Alexandre Burrows on Jan. 5 and 7, 2010.

“I just try to attack the game,” said Forsberg, who has four NHL hat tricks and his nicknamed ‘Scoresberg’ by his teammates. “I think our line did a good job of that today. Just try to play fast and go forward and obviously try to find each other. I think we got a couple of goals and a couple of good looks earlier than that as well.”

The left winger now has a team-high 22 goals, with five of those combined in his last two second periods.
The Predators (29-22-9) tied the St. Louis Blues for third place in the Central Division with 67 points.
The Avalanche (16-40-3) have lost three straight and eight of their last nine games (1-7-1).
Viktor Arvidsson gave Nashville a 1-0 lead at 11:31 of the first period on a one-timer from the slot. Forward Craig Smith got the assist, and Arvidsson beat Smith for his 19th goal.
Colorado’s Jarome Iginla tied it 1-1 at 17:52 of the first on a redirection from in front of the net.
Patrick Wiercioch gave the Avalanche a 2-1 lead at 2:34 of the second period on a backhand shot.
Forsberg tied it 2-2 at 5:26 of the second. He tracked down a loose puck and beat Jeremy Smith above the shoulder for his 20th goal. Smith started the second game of his career.
“It’s tough to explain,” Forsberg said. “Sometimes it feels great but you don’t score, and sometimes you feel bad but you still score. Tonight was a lot of fun.”
He scored the next two goals. First, at 10:59 of the second, his shot went off Smiths’ glove and into the net. Then, Forsberg scored an empty-net goal with 36.5 seconds left in the third period.
Forsberg is tied with Steve Sullivan for the most hat tricks in Predators history.
”He’s definitely a gifted player,” Nashville center Ryan Johansen said of his linemate Forsberg. ”Every night is a privilege to play with those guys. He keeps impressing me and I’m sure everyone else watching. He’s really an elite player, and he’s a huge part of this organization and this hockey club if we’re going to be successful.”
The Avalanche next host the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, when the Predators host the Washington Capitals.

Lionel Messi scored three goals to lead Barcelona to a 4-0 home thrashing of Manchester City in Wednesday’s Champions League match.

The hat trick was the 37th of the Argentine star forward’s career, and he now has six goals in two Champions League games this season, as well as 16 goals in 15 games against English clubs.

Neymar Jr also scored for Barcelona. Wednesday marked the second time Man City manager Pep Guardiola has returned to Catalonia since leaving in 2012, and it was the second time he was humbled by his former pupil, Messi.

When asked Tuesday how his team would stop Messi, Guardiola simply laughed, knowing well from his four years as Barcelona boss how fantastic a player the 29-year-old is.

Guardiola made a surprising move by omitting forward Sergio Aguero from his starting lineup, explaining that he benched the Argentine in order to get extra bodies in midfield.

Messi opened scoring in the 17th minute. Fernandinho slipped in, kicking off a Barcelona move that seemed to have stalled, and Messi nipped in, rounding his former teammate, goalie Claudio Bravo, and firing the ball into the empty net.

Despite that early lead, the night seemed to begin looking like a challenge for the hosts. Right-back Sergi Roberto was deemed unfit to make the team and left-back Jordi Alba, who was also nursing an injury before the game, was removed after less than 10 minutes. Then, Gerard Pique picked up an injury later in the first half following a late challenge from his Spain teammate, David Silva.

Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne and John Stones both had several scoring opportunities in the first half. In first-half stoppage time, Stones shot wide after finding himself unmarked.

City began the second half strong as well. However, Bravo made a very costly mistake in the 52nd minute. The goalkeeper accidentally gave the ball away to Luis Suarez, and Barcelona’s Uruguayan forward looped the ball over his former teammate, who batted the goal-bound shot with his hands–outside the area. Thus, Suarez was sent off with a red card, as the crowd at Camp Nou chanted his name.

Messi soon added his second goal of the game in the 61st minute, firing past substitute goalkeeper Willy Caballero from the edge of the area. He completed his hat-trick eight minutes later, when Suarez fed him from close range.

Neymar then netted the final goal in the 89th minute after missing from the penalty spot. The penalty was awarded after Aleksandar Kolarov took down Messi in the box after Suarez teed up the Argentine to score.

Bravo took the blame for the loss, but Guardiola refused to let his goalie do that.

“I’m sorry but until the last day of my career as a coach I will try to play from our goalkeeper,” Guardiola said. “There are moments you have to kick the ball out and against Everton on Saturday we played four or five times the long ball. But he tried to play it and sometimes this happens.

He continued: “There will be no change [of goalkeeper]. It stays the same. Football is a game of mistakes. He knows what he did. He has a lot of experience and he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the last 10 years. I don’t have doubts about him. He’s disappointed but he will learn from that.”

Guardiola and his Barcelona counterpart, Luis Enrique, felt that the sending-off was the turning point. City were in the game at 1-0 at that stage but, with 10 men, they were overrun.

Barcelona lead the Champions League table with 9 points, while City is in second with 4. Monchengladbach (3 points) and Celtic (1 point) follow in third and fourth, respectively.

Barcelona will next visit Valencia on Saturday in a La Liga matchup, while City will host Southampton in Sunday’s Premier League match.
