The NBA’s decision to fine Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert for his money-sign gesture during Game 4 of the Minnesota Timberwolves second-round series with the Denver Nuggets has sparked controversy and debate.

The NBA fined Gobert $75,000, a punishment many fans and analysts deemed excessive. Some saw Gobert’s gesture as a harmless expression of frustration in the heat of competition.

But Joe Dumars, the NBA’s executive vice president and head of basketball operations, saw it differently. He labeled Gobert’s action “unprofessional” and claimed it “questions the integrity of the league and its game officials.” This stern response reflects the league’s commitment to maintaining a professional and respectful environment on the court.

However, Gobert’s history of run-ins with officials likely influenced the severity of the punishment. This isn’t the first time Gobert has found himself in this situation for his on-court behavior. Earlier in the season, he was slapped with a $100,000 fine for a similar gesture directed at referee Scott Foster. Gobert’s repeat offenses raise questions about his ability to control his emotions and conduct himself appropriately during games.

Gobert remained defiant in response to the fine, brushing off the league’s decision nonchalantly. His dismissive reaction suggests a lack of remorse for his actions, further fueling the perception of him as a player unwilling to learn from past mistakes.

Gobert downplayed the significance of his gesture, attributing it to the game’s intensity. “It’s just emotions. I got to control my emotions,” Gobert told ESPN. While emotions undoubtedly run high during playoff matchups, professional athletes are expected to maintain composure and respect for the game at all times.

The timing of Gobert’s latest fine couldn’t have been worse for the Timberwolves when they were locked in a heated battle with the Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals.  

As the playoffs unfold and tensions rise, players like Gobert must prioritize sportsmanship and respect for the game above all else. While passion is an integral part of basketball, it must be channeled in a way that displays the integrity of the sport.

Jon “Bones” Jones has been banned from UFC competition for one year and fined $205,000 for failing a drug test.

The 30-year-old two-time light heavyweight champion appeared on Tuesday before the California State Athletic Commission, which voted to revoke Jones’ license. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound fighter submitted the drug test in July. He tested positive for metabolites of the anabolic steroid turinabol.

Jones, alongside his attorney Howard Jacobs, pled innocent at the hearing, claiming he had “no clue” how the banned substance entered his system.

According to CSAC executive director Andy Foster, Jones’ license was revoked on Aug. 28, 2017. Per California statutes, Jones is not eligible to apply for a license for one year. The license revocation only applies to the state of California, for now.

“Mr. Jones, I want to see you fighting as soon as possible,” CSAC chair John Cavelli said. “I hope you believe me. I hope you’re listening to some of the things I’ve told you and the other commissioners. Think about the people around you and the things you’re still doing. You are a unique, outstanding athlete. We want to see you in the cage as soon as possible. Come back to us.”

This is not the first time Jones has had issues outside the octagon. He served a one-year suspension in 2016 after testing positive for two banned anti-estrogenic agents. He still faces potential sanctions from the United States Anti-Doping Agency, which administered his failed test. Under USADA regulations, Jones faces a maximum suspension of four years.

Jones argued the evidence suggests he did not intentionally cheat. The failed drug test was administered just one day before his light heavyweight title fight against Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 on July 29.

Among Jones’ previous scandals are a felony hit-and-run charge in 2015, a positive cocaine test in 2014 and the aforementioned 2016 one-year suspension.

One CSAC member noted Jones’ 2012 DUI incident at Tuesday’s hearing. She also prompted Jones to admit that his management team signed several documents, including one that falsely stated he had reviewed mandatory USADA instructional materials.

Golden State Warriors two-time MVP Stephen Curry has again faced justice from the NBA.

The 29-year-old point guard was ejected and fined $50,000 for chucking his mouthpiece in the direction of an official during the fourth quarter of his team’s 111-101 loss to the Grizzlies in Memphis on Saturday night. Curry was reportedly angry that referees didn’t call a foul on a Grizzlies player as he drove to the basket.

“It’s an expensive mouthpiece toss,” Curry told Chris Haynes of ESPN.com on Monday night. “At the end of the day, it’s not about the money, it’s about me not doing stupid stuff and losing my cool like that. It’s obviously a tough blow, but it’s more so about me recognizing how to handle myself on the court.”

Curry was previously fined $25,000 for committing the same offense (but hitting a fan instead) in Game 6 of the 2016 NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The maximum the league can fine a player for such an infraction is $50,000.

The guard, who led his team to win the 2015 and 2017 NBA titles, reportedly won’t be suspended for his actions. Kevin Durant was also ejected with 43 seconds remaining in Saturday’s game but not fined for giving the crowd his middle finger. Andre Iguodala was fined $15,000 for screaming at the official.

On Monday night, Curry also drew headlines before the Warriors’ 133-103 victory over the Mavericks in Dallas when he was seen consoling the nephew of Mavericks guard Devin Harris. Harris’s brother died in a car accident last week.

Manchester United have been charged with violating UEFA’s anti-doping rules in their Europa League final victory over Ajax in May and fined 10,000 euros ($11,844), European soccer’s governing body announced on Monday.

The Red Devils won the final 2-0 in Stockholm, Sweden on May 24 and in doing so qualified for the Champions League.

Two of United’s players — defenders Phil Jones and Daley Blind — were fined 5,000 euros ($5,922) each for two distinct reasons: Jones was charged with “insulting and directing abusive language towards a doping control officer” and suspended for two games, while Blind was charged with “noncompliance with the doping procedure.”

Jones reportedly became upset with an official after the latter refused to let the defender pose for a team photo United took to honor the victims of the Manchester terrorist bombing at an Ariana Grande concert that left 22 people dead two days before the Europa League final.

The defender was an unused substitute for the final, while Blind played the entire game. Jones will miss the Super Cup match against Real Madrid on Aug. 8 and the opening Champions League game.

UEFA stated the incidents violated the rule dictating that teams are responsible for ensuring players selected to undergo doping controls are transported to the control station straight from the field as soon as the game ends.

United have three days to appeal against the decision, although Jose Mourinho’s team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

BBC reported that Jones and Blind were each fined  £4,450 ($5,880), while United were fined £8,900 ($11,762).

The Red Devils signed Chelsea defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic on Monday for £40 million ($52 million). The 28-year-old Serbian star had been at Stamford Bridge since 2014, and his new three-year deal at Old Trafford includes a one-year option.

Matic is United’s third summer signing after 24-year-old Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku, who joined for a franchise-record £75 million ($99 million) from Everton on July 10 and 23-year-old Swedish defender Victor Lindelof, who joined from Benfica for £31 million ($41 million).

The NFL has fined the New York Giants $150,000 and coach Ben McAdoo $50,000 for their illegal use of walkie-talkies during their Week 14 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, the league announced Tuesday.

In addition, the Giants’ fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft will fall a maximum of 12 spots in the fourth round and could drop below compensatory picks, depending on the spot the team will select from.

The penalties were for a violation of the league’s game operations policy. Coaches are not permitted to hold two-way radios during games, because such radios cannot be cut off with 15 seconds remaining on the play clock, and thus would give any team that uses them an unfair advantage. Giants quarterback Eli Manning was forced to use some of his receivers, including Odell Beckham Jr., as messengers to relay McAdoo’s plays after Manning’s helmet communication stopped functioning. McAdoo used the walkie-talkies for five plays. The drive ended when Manning threw an interception, and the Giants ultimately won the game 10-7 at MetLife Stadium on Dec. 11.

People around the NFL appear to think the Giant’s actions are a “pretty big deal” and a “blatant disregard for a known rule for a competitive advantage.”

The league took into consideration that the team fully cooperated with the investigation and that it was their first violation of the policy.

The Cowboys did not file a formal complaint with the NFL, but the league was quick to begin investigating after McAdoo was seen blatantly using a walkie-talkie.

Cowboys executive Stephen Jones wouldn’t confirm or deny last week that his team contacted the league regarding the matter.

“We don’t comment on things like that,” he said, “but it’s obvious to everybody what happened, and my understanding is it’s being looked into and handled.”

Jones added the Cowboys believed the use of walkie-talkies did not affect the outcome of the game.

McAdoo said he hadn’t thought about what would be an appropriate penalty, adding he was instead concentrated on the Giants’ game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night.

McAdoo is in his first year as an NFL head coach. He spent two seasons as the Giants’ offensive coordinator.

The Giants’ punishment seems light, which likely reflects how the league viewed the violation. The Atlanta Falcons were fined $350,000 and stripped of a fifth-round pick for pumping in fake crowd noise. The Kansas City Chiefs were forced to forfeit a 2016 third-round draft pick and a 2017 sixth-rounder for violating the league’s tampering rules when it contacted then-free agent Jeremy Maclin illegally before signing him.

Additionally, former Cleveland Browns general manager Ray Farmer was suspended four games for illegal cell phone use during a game.

FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, has fined England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for their display of poppies during 2018 Russia World Cup qualifiers around Armistice Day.

England and Scotland players wore armbands featuring the flower when they played at Wembley on November 11.

Wales and Northern Ireland’s respective games featured on-field displays or in the stands to mark the holiday, during which fallen soldiers are honored.

England’s Football Association will appeal against the fine of £35,311 ($43,667), with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland yet to decide.

Scotland and Wales were both fined £15,694 ($19,409), and Northern Ireland £11,770 ($14,555).

A Scottish FA (SFA) spokesman confirmed discussions between the home nations have already taken place and an official appeal is likely to be lodged early in the new year.

FIFA disciplinary committee chairman Claudio Sulser said he completely respected the commemorations but emphasized that the rules “need to be applied to all member associations.”

“The display, among others, of any political or religious symbol is strictly prohibited,” he added. “In the stadium and on the pitch, there is only room for sport, nothing else.”

Sports Minister Tracey Crouch described FIFA’s decision as “disappointing.”

Following Wales’ 1-1 draw at home to Serbia last month, FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings looking at “fans in the stands wearing the poppy” and the presence of “a member of the armed forces holding a bunch of poppies at the exit of the tunnel,” according to the Football Association of Wales (FAW).

Similarly, the holding of a minute’s silence, the laying of a wreath and a poppy display by fans before Northern Ireland’s 4-0 win over Azerbaijan on Nov. 11 have led to the punishment of the Irish FA.

FIFA has also punished the Irish FA with a £3,930 ($4,860) fine after its players wore shirts commemorating the centenary of the Easter Rising earlier this year.

Brock Lesnar, former UFC heavyweight champion, has been suspended one year and fined $250,000 for failed drug tests around the UFC 200 event.

Lesnar defeated Mark Hunt at the event on July 9, which marked Lesnar’s first MMA fight since 2011. He left for WWE shortly afterward.

The 39-year-old tested positive for the anti-estrogenic agent Hydroxy-clomiphene in an out-of-competition U.S. Anti-Doping Agency drug test on June 28 and in an in-competition test on the day of the fight.

Lesnar defeated Hunt by unanimous decision and was paid $2.5 million for the victory. The result for his fight with Hunt has been changed to a “no contest.”

Lesnar (5-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) will be eligible to return to MMA in July 2017. He is likely to receive a similar suspension from the USADA. His one-year ban closely mirrors the punishment received by former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones for a similar infraction.

The WWE chose not to suspend him before the SummerSlam pay-per-view, where he ended up defeating Randy Orton via TKO.

Based on how WWE has used Lesnar, it seems he will stick around no matter what happens. This was seen with the Orton match, and the recent loss in less than 90 seconds to Bill Goldberg at Survivor Series. The former WWE World Heavyweight Champion has already been announced for January’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view as well.

Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Wednesday that he doesn’t believe linebacker Vontaze Burfict did anything to merit the $75,000 fine handed down by the NFL for his actions in Sunday’s 35-17 loss to the New England Patriots.

Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams, however, disagrees, and said he believes the league should have been harsher in punishing Burfict. The linebacker has been suspended for three games and fined multiple times for violations of player safety rules.

Lewis stated he believes these rules were the reason for the fine, as opposed to Burfict intentionally stomping on Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount. 

Williams called out NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for his hypocrisy on Twitter Wednesday afternoon:

It’s difficult to dispute the logic in Williams’ argument. If safety is the NFL’s top priority, and a player who is a repeat offender continually goes out of his way to intentionally jeopardize other players’ safety, why not kick that player off the field?

Williams then replied to a Twitter user who repeated Lewis’ opinion that Burfict was fined due to his past actions as opposed to his present one by calling the linebacker a “danger to the game.”

This is not the first time Williams has shared a negative opinion on Burfict on social media. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether Burfict will actually respond this time.

The Steelers and the Bengals will face off in Week 15, so we will have to wait until then to see how much tension there is between the two players on the field.

The Bengals (2-4) will next host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, while the Steelers (4-2) will host the Patriots on Sunday, after coming off a loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Nick Kyrgios has been dealt a major blow by the Association of Tennis Professionals.

Nick Kyrgios Fined $16,500 For ‘Lack Of Best Efforts’ And Conduct At Shanghai Masters

The ATP fined the 21-year-old Australian $16,500 for his strange behavior during his second-round match defeat by Mischa Zverev at the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday.

Kyrgios was fined the maximum $10,000 for displaying a “lack of best efforts” during a match, $5,000 for verbal abuse of a spectator and $1,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The 12th-seeded youngster rushed through his 6-3, 6-1 loss to German qualifier Zverev, failing to put speed on his serves and hitting erratically on his groundstrokes. At one point, Kyrgios walked toward his chair after floating a serve across the net without even waiting for Zverev’s return– a bizarre move that seems like the epitome of lack of trying.

Late in the match, Kyrgios also angrily responded to a fan who criticized him by yelling back, “You want to come here and play?”

He was booed and jeered multiple times.

Afterwards, Krygios claimed he was tired. “It was just tough. Obviously I played a lot of matches in a row. Physically tired, mentally tired,” he said

“That’s why I’m trying to work on being able to be consistent every week. Just took the easy way out tonight and obviously didn’t show up at all. I wasn’t so much frustrated. I just tapped out a little bit, I guess.”

The feisty Australian is known for his on-court antics and frequent arguments with umpires and fans. Last year, he even insulted the 2016 US Open champion, Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka, during a match in Montreal.

Kyrgios received $12,500 in fines for his behavior in that match, as well as a possible 28-day suspension and a further $25,000 fine if he picked up any other major offenses over the following six months. That probation period ended in February.

On Friday, top-ranked Serb Novak Djokovic said he believes the youngster has some “life lessons to learn.”

“Not many great things are spoken about him lately,” Djokovic said. “I’m sorry to hear that, because I share the opinion of many players and many people in the tennis world that he’s one of the greatest talents the game has seen lately.”

When asked about the confrontation with the spectator, Kyrgios stated: “I feel like if they knew what they were talking about they’d be on the tennis court and being successful as well. I can’t really understand it at all. They don’t know what I’m going through, so no, I don’t understand it.”

The NBA fined Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey $25,000 on Sunday for “public criticism of officiating” one day after his comments regarding the calls and non-calls during the Raptors’ 99-84 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals on Saturday.

Casey, 59, invoked the officiating several times in his post-game news conference, even when the question didn’t concern the officiating.

“How you can miss fouls like that and calls like that? I can’t see it,” Casey said. “I’ve been in this league a long time, in college basketball a long time, but again, there’s got to be consistency. The same foul on one end has got to be the same foul on the other.”

He also said, “We shot zero free throws in the fourth quarter. Zero.”

Casey also noted that the Raptors have been called for 73 fouls so far this series, while the Cavaliers have been called for 46. Cleveland has also outshot Toronto, 86-51, at the foul line. Toronto’s coach also complained about the officiating after DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry did not attempt a free throw in Game 1.

League officials had a discussion with Casey on Sunday and announced the fine later that same day.

“It’s over with,” Casey said before the fine. “I said what I had to say last night. I’m not trying to send a message. It was a comment about the game last night, and it’s over with.”

Cavaliers guard Dahntay Jones also received punishment in the form of a suspension. Jones was suspended Game 4 for his low blow on Bismack Biyombo. The series is now tied 2-2 following the 105-99 Game 4 win on Monday night.

Marcus Smart scored 20 points, 11 of them in the fourth quarter, to lead the Boston Celtics to a 104-95 overtime victory over the Atlanta in Game 4 on Sunday night and tie the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series 2-2.

After Celtics coach Brad Stevens unsuccessfully enlisted all of his big men to slow Hawks power forward Paul Millsap, Stevens turned to 6-foot-4 Smart during a timeout with about nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and tasked him with guarding the 6-foot-8 Millsap, who had already scored the most points in an Atlanta Hawks playoff game in nearly three decades.

“Coach was like, ‘You know what, we’ve got to try something new.’ And he looked, turned at me and said, ‘Marcus, guard him,'” the 22-year-old Celtics point guard recalled. “And that’s all he said. I just kind of looked like, ‘OK.'”

Smart ended up limiting Millsap to two points on 1-of-5 shooting the rest of the night, capping off the night by limiting the Hawks to 1-of-10 shooting overall and forcing two turnovers.

Following the game at the TD Garden in Boston, Smart dressed quickly. Dressed in a black-and-white hooded sweatshirt unbefitting a player who expected to land in front of cameras, he stepped up on the riser alone and shrugged away his individual impact in helping the Celtics, as the main defenseman, to a win that may have saved the team’s season.

“The revolution will not be televised,” the front of Smart’s sweatshirt read. Clearly, this was not true because the world got to catch a glimpse of Smart’s talent in a game in which he came out undoubtedly the hero.

Smart’s teammate, Boston shooting guard Evan Turner stated, “[Smart] kept [Millsap] on 45 for, like, 20 minutes. That sounds crazy, but Smart stopped him from getting 50. Make sure you put that in the paper.”

One sleeve of Smart’s post-game sweatshirt read “Breathe in, breathe out.” On the other sleeve, it read, “Rise against the haters.”

Smart shot just 28.9 percent (77-of-266) at the TD Garden this season, finishing a season with the lowest field goal percentage at home in nearly six decades. He also earned a $5,000 fine from the NBA for a hilariously bad and flagrant flop that caused him to turn sideways after a mediocre attempt to foul out the Hawks’ Kyle Korver with about 4:32 remaining in Game 3 on Friday, which the Celtics won 111-103.  (The NBA has an anti-flopping rule)

On Sunday, however, Smart appeared to show a different side to him, one that demonstrates he could very well be the Celtics’ next homegrown superstar. The second-year guard did a fine job of defending one of the Hawks’ top players.

Boston point guard Isaiah Thomas stated, after Sunday’s game, “You give Marcus Smart an assignment, he’s probably going to get it done no matter who he is playing against. He’s a hell of a competitor.”

Millsap himself even praised the youngster, saying, “He is a tough guy.”

“I’m a basketball player,” Smart said. “I don’t really define myself as any position, and I think that’s what’s been so unique about me growing up and playing ball. It’s kind of hard to define my position, and it’s kind of hard to see who you’re going to put on me. … As crazy as it sounds, yes, I’ve guarded a 7-footer [in Knicks rookie Kristaps] Porzingis and things like that. And going to guard other bigs, and then covering the guards, it’s tough. But I pride myself on defense and this team knows that, my teammates know that, and the coaches know that. And they trust me to do that.”

Smart knows he’s different from the average NBA player his age, and he is aware of the stress he can cause his coaches.

“I think I’ve given every coach I’ve played for a heart attack at least once,” he said. “But what player hasn’t? You’re going to mess up. You’re not perfect. But there’s definitely a line between being aggressive and in control. You’ve got to determine between the two. You can be aggressive while still in control. And I did get out of control a little bit tonight, but for the most part, I stayed pretty much in control.”

Nevertheless, his coach appears to be fine with this, as long as he continues to defend the way he did on Sunday night.

“His aggression, his competitiveness, his spirit, like, our team needs it,” Stevens said. “So, yeah, there’s going to be some times where he might take a shot or whatever the case may be that he’d like to have back, but he does a lot of good things that lead to winning and give you a chance to win. And defensive versatility’s at the top of that list.”

The Celtics and the Hawks will face off again for Game 5 in Atlanta on Tuesday night.
